- The Iran-backed Houthis have shot down at least three US Reaper drones with limited weapons systems and a number of restrictions. The Houthis last week claimed to have downed a US MQ-9 Reaper drone with a surface-to-air missile in a desert region of Yemen's central Marib province. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels, however, claimed “this drone is the sixth of its kind to be downed”. Yemen received a large number of weapons, including sophisticated ballistic missiles, coastal defence, anti-tank and anti-air missile tech from the Soviet Union. However, experts say that after 30 years, the inherited Soviet systems would not have been enough for the Houthis to target sophisticated Western aircraft.

I have doubted their capabilities for a long while. The f-22s are only used on balloons and the f-35s only over the Syrian desert, if they were any good, they would be flying over Ukraine. Ukraine is very important to the US narrative so they really want a win, but the two aircraft that could help are not to be seen, so I conclude they are so bad that they dont want the world to notice.

in 1999, armed forces of Yugoslavia downed F-117 stealth aircraft with S-125, soviet AA system from the 60s
reaper has no stealth, it is much easier target than F-117
Those drones only ever fought dudes with AKs and RPGs, now they are fighting guys with access to somewhat modern weapon systems. I’d imagine these guys have some “obsolete” SAM systems being provided and certainly should fired stuff like IGLA. A lot of American weapons are only exceptional in a vacuum under very specific and controlled circumstances. I bet the famous AC-130 would be basically worthless against something like the Houthis too.

It's not often talked about, but the Houthis have, for over a decade, been making sophisticated weaponry right in Yemen. Yes, they get parts and materials from all over, but they do make a lot of their own arms. I say this because I feel like Western media, in particular, will try to incriminate and vilify Iran any way they can.

A drone or any drone can be shut down by an AK47 if it flies low enough!!!. So, Houthi's Shooting down an MQ-9 is not a major acheivement. Drones do not normally have stealth or Electronic counter measures. They are an easy target for anyone who have an air defense system. Houth's have an access to soviet era SAM's and their Iranian versions.

MR-sams are not frontline weapons. Manpads are. MR-SAMS are denial weapons so aircraft cant fly over there.
The good on guerrilla is their ability do hide. So, this M-sam needs to be hidden, moved on noticed, and preferably only exposed when needed to be used. The fear of them is the real killer. Makes the agressor require an attack from further away, where the bombs can be more easily detected, and thus, avoided.

Much of US systems like the MQ9 is predicated on the enemy being unarmed. It's a relatively slow platform that is easily intercepted.

For Russian weapons to reach Yemen Caspian Sea Persian corridor then Iranian ships from Iran to Yemen. Option two have the Iranians obtain the necessary licensing from the Russians to make it and then to the Houthis. US drones are not small - as you can see in the photo at 55 seconds in - they are not very fast either. This type is a fairly easy target for any guided missile that can detect them. It is surprising that the drone didn' have a self destruct. Perhaps it did but didn't work - is it still under warranty?
