In this bonus pod we unpack Sadiq Khan's comments to Ava on Thursday, where he called for the UK to stop exporting arms to Israel, breaking with the rest of the Labour Party's position on the ongoing controversy surrounding the government's legal advice.
Then, we look at the news that several MPs and advisors were caught in a honeytrap scam, and wonder how they managed to get caught out.

This frightened the authorities no end, since one man appeared to cross between different counties at great speed!
At a time when coming from just 10 miles away was likely to mean you were locally unknown in the area of each action, these temporary leaders would often cover their own clothes with a woman's dress, further to confuse potential informers, especially as the rioters often came by night.

Social anxiety and depression are either endemic or people like having sick days.
Workers rights have no led to an utopian work life for the vast majority.
The middle classes get workers rights and the working class get self employment and the gig economy.
Because someone's off sick for 6 months with depression as a cook in a care home. Next time they use an agency who will guarantee a member of staff will be there every day.

Furthermore the growth of agencies and the gig economy which is the direct result of workers rights Has been the biggest killer of social mobility. My dad did the same job as me but I'm self employed he was not. He got a mortgage, I could not. Owning assets is the best and normally the only way it's possible to work your way out of poverty.

The insane part is, our arms sales to Israel are minuscule compared to the US, so it seems preposterous that both Parties would be so vehemently against imposing a ban, especially in light of the increasing evidence coming to light that Israel are acting in violation of international law, coupled with now the deliberate killing of 3 British Aid Workers. The only reason they doggedly refuse to impose a sales ban is principally down to the optics doing so would have on others also selling weaponry to Israel. I suspect the pressure to continue selling arms is coming not so much from Israel, but from the US, simply in order not to undermine their continued support.

One thing I don't get is why us men are told to focus on 'male' role models.
As I got to typing this out, Laura's comment was brought up.
Because men's natural traits are incredibly different to women's. Not to say either sex cant exhibit traditional traits: strength, kindness ect. Just look at males raised by single mothers compared to those raised by both parents.

'Teaching's seen as girly' is an incredibly immature and dismissive way to talk about the issues with attracting men to teaching over the last 20 years.
They were obviously joking in tone but that isn't a small part of the issue you raised. I would understand this point if issues with attracting men to teaching was the subject they were talking about, but they were just rattling off a list of jobs that are not traditionally 'manly' in the way that dying breeds of industrial jobs have been. And they were right, teaching is one of those fields. I don't think it's fair to accuse them of being reductive if they're not actually discussing the issue.
I demand Sadiq Khan to step down as mayor of London.

I'm about to qualify as a junior doctor and have done a lot of work in psychiatry. I also have family members constantly in crises. Unfortunately there isn't good help for people in crises as the approach isnto stabilise them and then dischargr and there isnrarely adequate follow up.
What is needed is as Ava says, more widely available talking therapies at a community level. Also the attitudes of even doctors and psychiatrists towards certain patients, particualrly people with emotionally unstable personality disorder, is still miles behind and is leading to very poor outcomes.
A huge number of patients in the mental health system are victims of the social and economic crises in our country, and unfortunately the lack of proper support keeps this people out of work and it causes a viscous cycle
I agree. A narrative pertaining to mental health is vital and whilst the attitudes to this has improved, there needs to be more work to achieve empathy. The portrait of PTSD is not sympathetic in the media, it’s such a complex issue and it is shown as very linear.
Mental health is connected to physical health and depression can be a symptom of many disabilities.
The system needs a lot of amelioration.
@TheReelDealFilmReviews it is also misdiagnosis of a multitude of different mental health conditions that vary on such a huge spectrum. Particularly personality disorders (very poorly names that perpetuates stigma amongst public and HCPs) are slapped with a diagnosis of depression and are then treated pharmacologically which isn't well suited to the individual
@@tyler6539 I have epilepsy and it’s not controlled because it’s structural. I have social phobia because I hate fitting in public and that’s very reasonable I think. Social phobia seems to be fairly tolerated as the pandemic saw to that. SSRIs are not for everyone and I can’t have them because of my epilepsy; Lyrica is a good option for those who have tried SSRIs and don’t get on with them. I have lovely doctors but I have been patronised multiple times by other doctors because of my epilepsy. It’s a depressing condition, as are all neurological diseases and I have PTSD as a result of it.
I think that therapy is brilliant but it has to be right for the patient and psychotherapy requires a lot of strength. There is a lot of ignorance about mental health and I will say, epilepsy. Good luck with your exams 😊

It's common for politics shows like this to suggest that centre left parties (Labour) moving further right will not represent real change and therefore will lead to the rise of the far right. I believe that ignoring men's issues will be another significant contributor.

I think the discussion on therapy for chronic depression is... a little dismissive? I dunno, I think Ava's right in identifying the core issue at hand, but I disagree with her perspective on bad vs good service. As someone with chronic depression, drugs don't do anything for me. The problem is one of mindset. While I'm less prone to spiralling while on medication, I will, eventually, begin to resent its presence in my life. Therapy was integral in giving me strategies to identify my problems and combat symptoms proactively. The point isn't one or the other - it's that mental health work requires a holistic perspective, and you need a broad focus on all areas of provision for all required support.

Re Mens mental health...as you mention the lack of secure housing in one, and outside of academic roles the jobs are bus driver or repair man...very little productive roles even though we need farmers for example if its manly type jobs but there is a point to those guys smashing steel for 5 days a week. Where does the stress relief go now?
The non skilled jobs are cold calling, deliveries or health and social care.
I think the steel workers are a bit more stressed over no jobs than missing out on hard labor. What do you mean stress relief?

Right, on 'Service Sector and Masculinity': It's not that it is a bit girly to work in these jobs. The issue is the definition of professionalism and the way that working in service sector encourages you to be adaptable to the demands of your supervisors and your customers. When there is an issue of self respect in the service sector there is always going to be a difference in how people with varying personalities cope and react. So a lot of men find they struggle with reconciling their masculinity and pride with the environment that expects them to take on the expectations (and shitty behaviour) of customers and supervisors without a response which challenges the values of professionalism.
I also believe that male to male dynamics in the customer service environment can be incredibly toxic because under the guise of 'instructing professionalism' males in positions of authority can abuse males under that authority by wielding their 'instructive' capacity overseeing others as a way to challenge and bully other men who they have personal and petty issues with.
This is not to say, however, that this is an exclusively male issue. The problem that exacerbates male mental health here is that for men in the position of being oppressed by customers and supervisors who wield criticism of their 'professionalism' as a way of subjugating them they find it humiliating and self-perpetuatingly frustrating to the extent that seeking constructive help with the problems of these interpersonal dynamics can be difficult and obstructed by a need to express their frustration which can make it difficult for people who might be able to support or advise them to relate to them.

The industry that has by far the worst rates of mental health is construction. 600 construction workers committed suicide last year. Construction is about as male and masculine as it gets. Nothing to do with that. It's the middle class workers rights that allow the laptop classes to have their depression days. Do that in my line of work then you will never keep a job. Unable to pay your bills and your on the street offering see services to older gentleman.
When are people going to get real. Boys and men don't need anymore feminism or therapy. We need decent jobs that pay enough to live and have a tiny bit of security.

@@williamsulman2646 Well I don't dispute the statistic you're giving, I'm not fussed about proclaiming which industry is the most masculine - but to be clear my point was that the industry type to gender stereotype dynamic wasn't relevant.
But what I do dispute is your statement at the end there that boys and men don't need to talk more. At the very lest saying what you are saying is talking more. You're expressing how you feel about something based in evidence on a matter which is a practical and ethical issue and then you top it all off by saying that expressing yourself is not necessary - but clearly you do.
I just think you need to question whether the kind of expression that you think people are trying to encourage men to give is what you're challenging, rather than whether men should be feeling encouraged to express themselves.
Let's have a constructive dialogue even if you think there's too much emphasis on feminism and therapy. Don't write off expressing yourself altogether.

Provide or sell to Israel? This is an important distinction. Secondly, the English are not up in arms because there were "white" people killed, but because they were English. You really need to check your own bias. If they had been American, Australian or Canadian, the English reaction would not be the same. So it is not an issue of race but of nationality. Also, there are not two but three overarching groups involved in this. Humus, the Israeli government, and the civilians being used (killed and damaged) as a proxy punching bag. Yet no one frames it like this. It is hard to find content that really knows the basic nature of this conflict, let alone its nuances.

A good male role model is Henry Cavill. The guy obviously has traditional masculinity about him, but he's also a self confessed geek who's into "Nerdy" things like Warhammer but isn't ashamed about his hobbies and interests. Just a pleasant guy.
On a sidenote, I think the traditional gentleman needs to make a comeback. Respect and courtesy instead of "grinding" and materialism.

it's not about "manly" or "girly" regarding men not doing well in the service sector.
it is about the fact that the traits most normally seen in women (empathy and openness) are favoured in the service sector for obvious reasons. men who are high in these traits do really well in the service sector.
the traits normally seen in men (interested in things not people, focus on task goal not task method) are not favoured in the service area, or offices, nursing, teaching etc...
this is not a toxic masculinity thing, it is a biological drives thing.
women who are low on empathy and high on task goals do badly in the service sector too, but there are far fewer of these women.
Also why would I wanna work in the service sector when I can build roads for 4 times the wage and have some banter doing it. It's been a long time since a man could start a family working in a shop.

As much as I deplore what Laurence Fox said to Ava, she definitely isnt an expect on mens mental health whatsoever. It isnt a pressure men are outting in themselves, many are rewarded in society and especially rewarded by women why they are in a high social status, socio economic status and social class and are seen as of equal or higher social value to a woman. This is the brutal truth, its easy for an affluent middle class Londoner like Ava to say this but who are the guys she is dating and who are her friends? Are they of a much lower status than her? I doubt it. Many people dont even realise the individuals they dont even see of take seriously or even consider dating or having friendships with if they are of far lower status socioeconomicly and in their career status.
When lefties discuss men's mental health, especially lefty women, they can only do it through the prism of "yeah, but they haven't got it harder than women" or "yeah, but they haven't got it harder than people of colour". They're not bothered about really getting to the bottom of it. They're only motivated to the extent that they want people to think they care about it because the act of expressing concern is the only currency they can earn without putting in any effort. The thing is, different men have different reasons for their issues, but discussing people as individuals is not compatible with the collective victimhood that is prescribed by identity politics.
Obviously I don't mean all lefties or all lefty women. I'm just speaking anecdotally regarding the individuals I've observed discussing this subject.
