From the description: "I had never heard of this game"... that's the biggest tragedy, not even DOA fans have heard of this game 🥲
DOAO along with 3rd Strike on GGPO were my "real start" with fighting games in 2012. But sometimes I wish I had the taste of a regular aѕѕ mf who only plays mainstream slop like FIFA CoD LoL or whatever, would make life so much easier lmao but noooo, I had to enjoy that one abandoned broken Chinese free-to-play PC port of a niche Japanese Xbox-exclusive fg resurrected by Russian hackers and kept alive by the Gran Autіѕmо of the community... (shoutouts to b0ny the one guy who made private servers possible, he's the real brain of the operation)
the DOA4/DOAO "3D free roaming lobby with cute avatars" is a tumor that later infected all ASW games/SF6/TK8 etc., but that's not why you play this game. You play it because the core gameplay is freaking DOA2 Ultimate! Best in the series tied with DOA3. A real shame that they're so old that most current DOA players have never even experienced them :\

Those Avatars look so much cooler than Tekkenn 8's. I really miss DOA, i bought an XBoxOneX in January and had all the Xbox DOA games and they still hold up. Hope they will come back from the dead like Soul Calibur.

SoulCalibur is not that alive anymore though.

A month ago i introduced a group of my friends to doa with this game, one of them genuinely grew addicted to learning about doa cuz of dead or alive online. I wish team ninja and koei would bring back a doa game and actually make good fundamentals for the game. Doa will always be a fave fighting game for me

As someone that had the chance to play on an old DOAO private server years ago [you might have stumbled upon a very old, very crusty quality gameplay between me and DOA veteran WAZAAAAA...who I played again a few weeks ago in DOA2 through Flycast with rollback netcode and was great], it might have been pretty laggy for my laptop and distance [I live in Venezuela], but it was definitely all there- although some stuff was apparently modified in balance. Specifically, Jann-Lee's flying kick, which turns out is already punishable enough with a well placed hold or dodge, no longer was unblockable, and likely there were a few other details like that there.
All in all though, to see a video of something as oddly specific as DOAO, which had been my only online experience for Dead or Alive, is awesome.
EDIT: Also, not sure if you had run into this while researching, but the original version of the game actually had more than just that little place for lobbies. There were actually far more locations for lobby you could navigate, but that is one of the few things that has yet to be restored succesfully in private servers. Oh, and it is kinda difficult to see since the game as a whole is kinda filled with Engrish, but there's a challenge mode that I don't know if its also taken from DOA2U or if unique to DOAO.

the other locations are selectable by the server host, DOAOdocumentation.txt (bundled within every installation) explains how, here's an excerpt:
*0=Training Center 1=E-Terminal 2=Market 3=Waiting Room (orange) 4=Stadium. For additional maps, set location to 0 and hex edit "tra_001_01_base_0001" inside newServer.exe to something else (full map list can be found in DOA Online\data\outgame\bg\map)*

Nice I didn't know about this version. "Playing this game now in 2019"? Is this an old script?

Not a PC gamer but I am a DOA fan and this is certainly not a topic that I've heard a lot of discussion regarding, so I look forward to hearing about it in detail. Thanks for shining a spotlight on my favourite fighting game series.
0:19 - I was about to mention how you can actually play as Gold Lighthan in Tatsunoko vs Capcom but I do not recall any off-the-cliff-throws in that game, so your point stands.
1:20 - Wait; it released in any form? I thought it was amongst the three DOA projects that were all cancelled before anything got released, so I never knew a Beta managed to come out of it.
2:51 - The live action trailer is pretty cool; love how authentic Kasumi and Ayane's hair looks. Very true to the character's colours.
5:07 - That leads me to question why they were focusing such efforts on the Chinese market with DOA of all things. I feel that a PC DOA would have better marketing opportunities in other countries or their other IPs would appeal more to a Chinese market. I'm assuming it was a financial motivation.
5:56 - Oh yeah, DOA2 Ultimate had Hitomi as a bonus character. I forgot for a second that was she retroactively added with the remake. I wonder how this control scheme would work on a keyboard... sounds like it'd be entertaining to witness.
7:41 - Once again, Dead or Alive doing something first long before it's competitors. Shimbori working on Tekken 8 has certainly added some DOA influence to it.

long story short, one of most finnest unique fighting games..with really good cast of character...it has fan service, but many thing more to convince you to keep playing it

@@jensvide777 Yeah there's a private server called Insignia for Original Xbox games, the only real catch is that it has to be an original Xbox or emulated in XEMU. 360 and later can't use it currently

Haven't hopped on in a while but I've always been a big supporter of DOAO since before the current private server even launched, so glad it's still up to this day 😌
