I love how "normal" Gaunter looks. He doesn't look like an important character. He looks like a random npc in the game, and that's brilliant. He's not supposed to stick out. It actually makes him more creepy.
you can see him almost in every hearts of stone mission ,dressed up as guards or random peasants ,if you pay attention....watching your decisions as you progress
@@bestiawadowicka Twardowski didn't exactly manage to trick the devil tho. It was his prayers that "saved" him so he landed on the moon. If anything, the devil tricked him like Gaunter tricked Olgierd by "standing on the moon".
I wouldn't call O'Dimm the devil, sure he enjoy torturing people, but only for those that deserve it, and even when he lose, he still wins, even if you save Von Everic, he recovers his feelings and the only that he could feel was pain and suffering for those that he lose, he would be drowning in his own misery the rest of his life, if you are good and honest, O'Dimm wont come for you, but if you are selfish, arrogant, brutal and ruthless, he surely would come, if you are lucky, he only would curse you, if you are unlucky, he would offer you a deal for your soul and would trick you and made you think that you have the upper hand, when he in control all the time.
@@TheKeyser94 What did the professor do to deserve his fate? What did Iris do? The friendly drunk man? The Wight's victims? He doesn't just torture the human who signed his pact or did bad act, he goes after everyone the person interacts with and anyone who annoys him to satiate his sadism. No, Gaunter is evil, THE evil and he relishes torturing human lives. He even has a creepy song. I mean, come on?
@@hueylongdong347 No one call Mephistopheles a saint, but O'Dimm only cares to play with very bad people, to people that call his attention, like the professor, and toy with him, and Iris is not innocent either, she was there making part of the deal with Von Everec, she was the added the clause that to the deal to be finish they needed to be in the surface of the moon. But call him this kind of characters "evil" when they do this kind of things for worse people, like Von Everec, being to simplistic, Von Everec was a warlord, he pillage and killed, either way if you "save" him or let O'Dimm take his soul, O'Dimm would win, if you "save" him, Von Everec, would recuperate his feelings, and would feel guilt and sorrow the rest of his life for all the lives that he had taken, doing one thing or another is irrelevant because either way O'Dimm would win, I think that make him live is the worst punishment that only letting O'Dimm take his soul.
@@TheKeyser94 Professor was tasked with doing a job and O'Dimm mentally tortured him for it. He called for Gaunter O'Dimm's attention like a woman with a short skirt calls to be raped. Where is it stated that Iris partook in the blood pact? It was between Olgierd and O'Dimm. Gaunter IS evil because he casually murders a drunk man for simply interupting him. The people Olgierd has killed pale in comparison to the ones Gaunter O'Dimm has. Need I remind you that after Gaunter transformed Marlene into a monster, it would cause the deaths of countless innocent peasants in the Trastemara area? Since O'Dimm is ancient, he has done this countless times. Don't act like Gaunter O'Dimm tortures and hurts people because they deserve it, many in fact don't. He willfully and maliciously conspires to cause suffering to people that might be spared. And he does this because he is a degenerate monster in human flesh that feeds on the pain and suffering of others. O'Dimm has a scienter - he knows full well that his contracts hurt people further. Even if their wording is vague, their intent is clear but Gaunter twists peoples words because he enjoys ruining lives. He is like an adult who gives a gun to child with the intent that the child would eventually end up shooting himself and others. He is fully responsible for what happens to the people he bestows his unnatural "gifts" upon. Gaunter doesn't win if Geralt saves Olgierd. Mirror wants only one thing - human souls. For him, pain to a soul is simply like a crunchy crust to a bread. If he doesn't get to feast on the person's soul, he automatically loses. Whatever Olgierd further suffers further, guilt or whatnot, is irrelevant because O'Dimm cannot claim him.
@@rafaelannibale1697 He is among the weakest muster cards in the game and has arguably the worst muster mechanic since only playing Gaunter will summon the whole set.
@@vahlen5281 Ghouls give you 3 power in total. Nekkers give you 6 power in total. Gaunter and the Darknesses gives you 14 power in total, 12 without Gaunter himself, which is still decent considering it surpasses the power of most hero cards, and pretty close to Geralt&Ciri cards' power. It's nowhere near the worst muster card (which is Ghoul basically), it's pretty good considering the card is neutral so you can use it in any deck.
tung nguyen Well after you meet him in White Orchard, you can see him walk out the gate but if you go and have a look outside, he is nowhere to be seen. He literally disappears as soon as he exits the door. That was creepy as fuck.
@@JudgeHolden2003 Immortal means you don't age (depending on the context). Elves, although they have massively larger lifespans than humans, still eventually die of old age. Therefore, they're not immortal.
The eerie feeling that we met him just at the start of the game is already eerie enough but his complexity is even worse. He looks so calm and seems a normal human being until...............he stabs a spoon in your eye and you instantly die.
Being so used through the game to thrust my sword through everything to deal with it, then coming across him.. I was like actually like, well fuck.. He is actually immortal and can control time..
I just realized that there is only one thing Gaunter O'Dimm cannot beat or in any way interfere with, it was actually mentioned if as a reward you asked him about Ciri and he specifically says that "there are forces he cannot meddle with, even for him" . Took me a while to realize what he was refering to, yet it was under my nose all this time. The only thing Gaunter O'Dimm cannot meddle or in any way interfere with is *Destiny* .
@@whatisbow2865 while that might be true all that was actually confirmed by that is he can’t deal with destiny which is a huge thing in the Witcher world
@@whatisbow2865 Not really, Ciri would give a good competition, but she's nothing in front of O'Dimm. He can just stop time, and slice her neck before she can even teleport. And he's probably gonna be able to predict where she would teleport to as well...
Its possible, but later in the Gwent trailer for the Master Mirror expansion, its pretty clearly indicated that O'Dimm sort of partially plays a part in controlling the thing we and several others in the Witcher universe call "Destiny". What I am thinking is that he probably didn't want to tell Geralt where she was, which is why he pretended to not be able to interfere in his business, despite possibly knowing ALL the events of the main game.
Geralt of Rivia: You're not human, that's clear. So what are you? A demon? A djinn? Gaunter O'Dim: Do you really wish to know? Geralt of Rivia: Yes. Gaunter O'Dim: No, Geralt, you don't. This one time I shall spare you and not grant your wish. Sent fokin chills to me spine m8
Pretty sure a devil or demon can't stop time or drive people insane with just knowing what he is. I'd say he is at least an expy of Nyarlathotep. Some sort of extradimensional eldritch horror.
the witcher 3 is another universe, it has its OWN universe, probably satan or demons could stop time if he was indeed one. Who are you to say that demons or satan cant stop time? Lol
The scariest part is that if you choose to help Olgierd and "beat" Gaunter at his own game, you have just made an enemy of the most powerful (to the best of our knowledge) being in the witcher-verse. Another scary part is, as far as I understand, he chooses to be bound by the rules of the "game" as it would be boring otherwise, so by that line of logic, when you "beat" him at his game, he literally just chooses to walk away, and come back another time.
It’s kinda like that song where the devil challenges a guy to a fiddle battle. And when he loses he accepts defeat even tho HE was the judge of the contest himself
You literally made an enemy of him by interacting in White Orchard. The moment he is aware of you, he *will* end up fucking you up, sooner or later. Banishing him at least keeps him at bay before another retard summons him back.
i personally think its more then just 'walking away' i think the scary part is not the absolute laws of his power and deals, but the way he manipulates us, like a trickster. I think that is also the core of his power, he in a way can't lie because he is bound by the contract/deal himself. But knowledge is power, and words can be a fickle thing but with Gaunter, words are law, like self fulfilling prophecy's.
@@giocommentary That is also interesting and quite plausible, although I’m leaning towards the theory that he chooses to “bind” himself by his own rules, meaning he wields power that could destroy us (the player) at any moment, but chooses not to as it would not be fun. He is in all possibility an ancient being who has been around for who knows how long, when you have the laws of time/space, life/death and quite possibly unlimited life at your fingertips, things presumably become really boring. I do also believe that he is not an absolute being, in the full sense of a God (an in omnipotent/omniscient/perfect). He’s more than likely some sort of demon or lesser God. Just like Loki was a trickster in Norse mythology, but was not nearly as strong as Thor or Odin and many other gods.
Fun fact I just found: In Blood and Wine, when Geralt tells the story of Marlene as part of main quest - a woman that was cursed and turned into a wight by beggar l that she refused to give food to, Gaunter’s theme starts playing in the background. We can assume that the beggar was no other than Gaunter O’Dimm
I don't remember where into the quest it happens, I think Marlene herself speaks the words "master mirror" or something like that when she tells you what happened to her while she works at Corvo Bianco. To me it was obvious who cursed her from the spoons and there are letters you can find in the house.
The craziest part of it all is how many times Gaunter O’Dimm appears throughout the wild hunt. He can be found sitting in a market square, and just about everywhere. It’s creepy.
The Mysterious Stranger all over the place man. During a play through, take your time and look around for him. He can be found up above in a set of rafters, under some floor boards, in a hole in a wall, markets, etc.
@@themysteriousstranger4530 yeah gaunter check up on your progress through the entire story, he can be found at alot of points in the story, including the auction dressed as a merchant in the background, he is a redanian crossbowmen during the heist. and alot more moments.
I love how this theme song played in blood and wine during the spoons quest. if you noticed, it makes so much more sense why the poor woman got cursed.
I think that fact that it's DLC increases the impact, just enough story to making you want more but still having a fantastic time with the journey. I kind of like the idea that this one thing Geralt can't put down for good and him still being clueless about what Gaunter is.
>It was short This dlc is several times longer than any last call of duty, or some other shit. How can this be considered "short". A full playthrough takes 25 hours, more than most other games that cost $60-$70.
It's simply brilliant how this character was introduced in the beginning of the main game. You thought it was just a random character with no story and .... BAM he gets an expansion! This is why i love Witcher 3. The characters and story is amazing.
I had totally forgotten about him at the start of the game, when I started playing again after this dlc I almost shit my pants when I saw him in the beginning. The unseeming ones scare me the most...
Bunch of boy scout that's what they are, nothing more than elves who spent 3 years in the gym before going for a world hopping trip. But O'Dim? He's on another level of intimidating.
When I got Heart of Stone, I didn't immediately jump into the quests. I cleaned out all those new Question Marks that popped up on my map. After the local populace came back to a place that I rid of ghouls, a small circle of children started chanting this little diddy I haven't heard before, suprising to me since I played the game for about 80 hours already. I wrote it off as a neat little detail. When Gaunter approached Geralt on the Offieri ship, the dots connected immediately and I don't think I ever had such an intense case of dread-filled goosebumps~
And then it returns near the end, and you finally know it's not all children's rhymes but something else... "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, give what I wish for most above all." and the Man of Glass shall grant your wish.
I remember! A few weeks ago I came across that. At the time I just stood there and heard them chant. Didn't know what it was about. Though when Geralt met Gaunter all was clear.
I was walking by them, and heard them singing. I also stopped to listen, and was pleasantly listening along. As the song got darker and darker, I remember slowly backing my chair away from the screen, and ran from that town as fast as I could. Every time I heard that song I fucking up and left whatever I was doing, and usually went back to Novigrad. I recall that I slept with the light on for two weeks initially.
At first the Crones seem to be the most vile and dangerous entities in Witcher 3. It's only when you meet Gaunter O'Dim that you realize the crones were infants compared to him.
Most dangerous? They are under Wild Hunt in "Food Chain" - since they are scared of Imlerith, and Gaunter o' Dimm is at the top of "Food chain" in Witcher universe.
I love how they built him up in the story, piece by piece. I first thought.. ''he's a merchant'', then ''oh he must be very powerful mage'', then ''A djinn or something''. I was in the dark just as Geralt. Then I figured out some clues in the haunted house, and then the professor's tale. Brilliant. This is how you built things up to momentum. I played HOS in one day, I could not stop
Whited Out I did it with a sign build recently and it’s the worst thing ever because they’re immune to fire forcing you to use your incredibly low damage swords

All who have learned my true name are now either dead or have met an even worse fate. Yet I still need you. You don't mess with Gaunter holy cow...
@@hamedm9241 It means that Gaunter knows what a person wants when they wish for something, the problem is he enjoys dealing with rotten individuals the most and when doing so he fucks them over purposefully by playing around with them. Olgierd for example wanted immortality and riches in the end he became an emotionless wreck and lost everything dear to him for he was a vile human being and Gaunter knew that. Gaunter takes pleasure in ruining humans lives but he has his reasons for it. Unlike Geralt someone with pure and noble intentions was indeed sought out by Gaunter to be his aide in this Quest, at the end when you wish something from him he will grant it without any catch or contract; it is a gift for his honesty which Gaunter must've appreciated. He might be Evil Incarnate but atleast we can see that he does things by a certain code.
@@wrewrwrewtre3 yeah, even himself when says that when he meets geralt near the end of HoS "I dont have the fault that they are not happy of their wishes, is the fault that they poorly formulate" Gaunter always like the "little words" in their contracts, like in thronebreaker in an easter egg that is a contract with him it says "when the sun rises in the dark of the night in Lyria, the pact will be done" but never say what kind of sun need to be, and we know that the contract was fullfil. Why? Because Nilfgaard invade Lyria and Rivia during the night...and Nilfgaard has a sun in his flag God, O'Dim is a genius of contracts
Why da fuck didn't you banish him. I didn't even consider leaving Olgierd to an eternity of possibly suffering. I mean he isn't supposed to be the greatest person in the world but still.

Jonathan Irizarry The thing I always do is in the firs play trough i choose the saddle and in the second one (ng+) i save olgierd. That way you can have both.
I dont think Eredin was a villain truly. He was just another actor in Elven politics, not cut out to be a true villain. He was just acting according to his interests and benefits thats it. You can even talk his generals out of the whole struggle. But the others were truly monsters. Especially O’Dimm, a monster among monsters.
You know, I think I know the reason. Fear of the unknown. When we did not understand who was The Wild Hunt, we were afraid of them. We do not clearly know what O'Dimm and how MUCH he's capable of. Same goes for The Crones, although you can argue you do know what Dettlaff is capable of being a Higher Vampire.
When I bought Hearts of stone I would have never guessed that in such a cheap DLC there would be the best villain I've seen in a video game in years (or maybe best villain in a game ever?) this guy was so amazing, so intriguing. Edit years later 2023: Playing through this masterpiece again years later and this guy still gives me the creeps, like seriously he makes you so uneasy lol, the way every character talks about him for example and the things he does himself which make it clear you can’t seriously hope to beat him in a fight straight up, he made The Wild Hunt look like child’s play in comparison 😭
Gaunter: You wish to give your soul for his? Geralt: No, but we can play for them. I lose you take mine and Olgeird's. But if I win you release us both. Gaunter: What do you propose we play? Gwent? Me:....Yes. I would gladly stake my soul over a game of gwent. Lay 'em down.
geralt told him to play but not to fight coz he already knew that he can never win against gaunter o dimm as he has some extraordinary abilities and powers.... fucking thing is that he can stop time.
Imagine if you’re walking the streets of a city in cyberpunk 2077 and a child runs by singing the lyrics of the same theme and the theme starts playing very softly in the background, and you see gaunter O’Dimm for just a second standing far away, staring at you with his spoons twirling in his hands and you know you saw him, he knows who you, the player, are, who beat him the last time and then he smiles at you and the next second there’s no one there. Damn !! If that happens, I’m probably gonna crap myself knowing he’s out there !! Knowing that he’s out hunting his next victims and you can’t do anything about it either !!
"You saw that dude right? With the weird clothes and wooden spoons? He said he was a merchant of mirrors, a man of glass. Yet I didn't see any mirrors or glass.. I'm not one to be spooked, but that did it V"
Take way the "beat him" part ( I let him have the soul ), and that would be soo freaking cool... and creppy as fuck. Would take that over Ciri"s cameo any moment

After the Edgerunners anime. It truly hit top 10 on Steam. So yeah it is remembered in a way. It's mostly fixed now but nobody is gonna forget the first impressions
Gaunter is exactly like the Satan in Master and Margarita- he is dark and terrible and will not hesitate to deliver judgement, even going so far as to encourage people to commit evil so he can punish it. However, he doesn’t go around committing evil for the sake of it or for his own benefit. I recommend reading Master and Margarita, one of the greatest philosophical books of the 20th century, and you will understand to a much greater extent what Gaunter represents. Whether you think Gaunter is good or evil probably depends on what you think represents justice. Olgierd (spelling?) is about as vile as a human can get, but at the same time he is full of regret... Does he deserve to lose his soul for his cruelty, or does his repentance excuse him from a lifetime of evil?
If you think about it, Gaunter O'Dimm is, in a sense, more important (Not to mention powerful and evil) than the Wild Hunt. - First introductions in White Orchard, the fact that when Geralt turns around when they finish talking, Gaunter has suddenly disappeared. - You will pass children on your way to missions / waypoints, and the children will often be singing his song. - He is watching you from afar in many cutscenes, perfectly blending with the background. - In Blood And Wine, a woman has a horrible curse bestowed upon her, by a "Beggar that sold mirrors". While you tell this to the Majordomo, O'Dimm's theme song is playing. In Thronebreakers, there is a forest with a house in the middle. If you lower the raining sound for that map, you can hear Gaunter's theme being whistled in the background by someone. On "Whatsoever a Man Soweth" (after the professor dies) if you extinguish all the candles around the pentagram, you can hear something breathing before it abruptly stops. - If you get the good ending, he will say something in 3 different languages, translated to: "You are insignificant. You think you've defeated me, but you are wrong. I cant be killed. I will be back." Gaunter was given more attention, and has always been more present than what meets the eye, and hopefully, he will come back in future games!
V meets a strange man who seems to know too much about him/her. When V challenges him and asks who he is... He asks V if they'd really wish to know. If they say yes, he shrugs and says ill do you a favor and not grant that wish
@@Griever88Gryphus they confirmed a new The Witcher game, but not with Geralt. And yes a The Witcher game, not a game only in the Witcher world like Thronebreaker
The only gripe I have with CDP is the handling of Eredin. I was expecting more from the charismatic and attractive elf. In the game he was rather generic and looked pretty.....of I would say. Also expected more interactions between him and Cirila, considering she was interested in him and he had plans for her.
One of the main problems is that the Wild Hunt's strength is, mostly, in numbers. They were big, bulky and had super human strength and only few could freeze everything. That's it. Gaunter could single-handedly, instantly, wipe out the Wild Hunt if he so desired. Detlaff was one of the more powerful vampires, and he could probably rip those giant, slow, armored elves a new one with vampiric agility. Hell. Detlaff and Regis could probably wipe out the Wild Hunt albeit not was easily as Gaunter.
This character is so well designed and written that even being your antagonist, you can't hate him, only respect and admire him. That's awesome! I can't remember a villain like this one in any other game.
Yes although the main villian is Olgeird gaunter had just pulled his strings from before they met geralt to bring Olgeird to become the vile man he is in this dlc
They based him on polish legend about Mr. Twardowski. He represented devil, and Twardowski is represented by Everec. They wrote a pact about devil granting Twardowski 3 wishes, but then they would meet in Rome and devil would have his souls. Twardowski evaded going to Rome but he ended up with his soul taken inside tavern called "Rome". They changed Rome to moon in this version.
MrKoval92 They didn't simply change "Rome" to "Moon" though. According to the legend, as the devil was taking Twardowski's soul to hell, Twardowski prayed to virgin Mary. Mary then forced the devil to drop Twardowski's soul and it landed on the moon, where Twardowski still lives to this day. The attention to detail by CD project Red is amazing

Yep, that's precisely what made Sovereign so damn scary and the way it was revealed. You're set up to believe that Saren is the main villain and the biggest threat and then out comes the Sovereign-conversation from nowhere and you realize what you're actually up against. IF even a fraction of what it was saying was true how the hell would anyone stand a chance against something like that? Harbinger just... didn't live up to the air around Sovereign. It's hard to put a finger on what it was, it's just no contest between them.
Harbinger was more badass, but Sovereign was more frightening. With Sovereign the threat of the Reapers is very new and they have no idea what Shepard and friends are capable of. To Sovereign, he/she is just another organic ready to be squashed. Harbinger is fully aware of Shepard's threat and thus treats him/her as a more personal enemy. He is not as coldly attached as Sovereign was. Hence the overall lack of menace compared to Sovereign.
Morgan Mailhiot Yes he was but I think the reason why Sovereign was more frightening was the fear of the unknown, you knew what you were getting into with Harbringer and knew "they die same as anything else!"
When I was playing Hearts of Stone, the game captured me so much I felt I was Geralt. At the end of the story I didn't save Olgierd because I was so afraid of what Gaunter could do to me that I just let Olgierd die. This is the deepest experience i have ever had with a videogame
It’s funny how this DLC is ten dollars and has so much content and an incredible story and then you have all these other games charging up to 40 dollars for boring low quality dlc that has minimal effort put into it.
So, as many people already know, Gaunter's initials are basically GOD. But (at least for me) to understand the real nature of him you gotta combine this fact with his other name: Mirror Man. In Poland, at least where I come from, people often say that the devil is a complete opposite of the God - for example, in many old stories, dark magic spells are based on reciting prayers backwards. What I'm telling is that Gaunter is devil indeed - he is the mirror reflection of God, the Liar, so as it's said in our Polish folklor.
Also, God backwards is dog, and he's know as Master Mirror, so if you mirror God, you get dog, so Gaunter probably chose those initials and the mirror detail to mock God.
Well when you think about it he does tell you everything when you sign a contract so rly he isn't tricking you but you'r just being foolish thinking he won't be able to fulfill the contract by doing what olgierd did saying he will only be able to take his soul when they are on the moon. His intentions might not be great but it's your own fault for signing the contract. So why is he called the devil?
I mean Gaunter O'Dimm is involved for the Spotted Wight's existed, there's a diary journal/Diary that even says something in the lines of "A man who sold mirrors came by", which is what Gaunter is accociated with in terms of description
I just love how gaunter's "boss fight" intimidates you because it aims to make you anxious and tense because of the relentless passing of time, while detlaff's boss fight intimidates you because of its concrete danger, because he is one of the most dangerous vampires and can destroy you in one millisecond. Two perfect final confrontation for two perfect villains
CDPR Dev: I wish for the best expansion ever, one that will be talked about for ages. O'Dimm: Ah right away, done. CDPR Dev: Amazing! Are you sure you don't require payment good ser? O'Dimm: Oh don't worry about that, all on good time ;-) CDPR Dev: :-) .... :-[ .... :-(
Blood and Wine was a much longer and vast DLC but man did I enjoy Hearts of Stone, o'Dimm was such a well done villain, mysterious, extremely powerful but still bound by his own words, could never be killed, only outsmarted at his own game. Amazing how you use Geralts strength and sword to defeat 99% of the enemies but with the greatest of them all the sword is useless, the spells and bombs have no effect, you must play by the rules and use the mind to defeat a "man" who controls time itself. Bravo CD Projekt Red...bravo.
The funny thing is, they had this guy in the game from the very beginning. And he even mentions you will meet again. It's like they... knew the future all along...
The slow, impending sense of dread you get the more you see him, talk to him and deal with him is unparalleled in gaming. You slowly realise Geralt is totally outmatched by conventional means and this guy could do anything he wanted
I was mindblown after replaying the game when i realised that when you meet O'Dimm for the first time, he doesn't walk away, he just straight up disappears. It's so easy to miss but has such a big impact when you know what the character is.
"There will come a time when she comes to you defeated, resigned. Find a way to make her laugh. There will come a time when one betrays her. Let her vent her rage. There will come a time when she will grieve for a friend. Grieve with her. There will come a time when fear will engulf her. Instill courage in her, but do not act in her stead. And never, ever let her feel as if you've sold her out." -Gaunter O' Dimm
Tell me, would you trust a guy if he had horns and stuff xD in the end he started to take his true form, demonic form when he was defeated. His human form is just diversion to make people trust him :D:D
His smile fair as spring, as towards him he draws you His tongue sharp and silvery, as he implores you Your wishes he grants, as he swears to adore you Gold, silver, jewels - he lays riches before you Dues need be repaid, and he will come for you All to reclaim, no smile to console you He'll snare you in bonds, eyes glowin' , afire To gore and torment you, till the stars expire
Something like: His face is smooth and speech flowery, This devil sins(verb) with nature unclean. He always villingly will make your wishes come true, give you brillants, and silver and gold. But when he comes to pick up his debts, laughters and warmth favor will end. He will tether you, take away wealth, you will suffer agony until the stars go out. ruclips.net/video/J6KBfl7BhTI/видео.html - and polish version sounds better
I know, right? He is evil incarnate, no two ways about it. But you would expect someone like him to stand out. Gaunter just looks like a guy and it’s terrifying.
Even in Gwent he is terrifying cause if you have the full set of his cards, you can get up to 14 points by playing him. That's only 1 point less than Ciri and Geralt's cards.
ssuo ben No, as CDPR bases their monsters, etc. on real Slavic folklore, Gaunter O'Dimm represents the devil. It is a common Christian motif that the devil seeks to mock God in any way possible, so the acronym may be symbolic of that; there are also ideas floating that the name is a mixture of two Stephen King characters.
Witcher 3 base game: 8/10 (the main story and the bosses wasnt that good) Blood and Wine: 9/10 (they did sometimes just recycled a few old quests, but they made them better than in the base game and the story and antagonist was better too) Hearts of Stone: 11/10 (everything is perfect there. the Quests and 3 wishes were very nice,i mean you never had them and the bosses were amazing and very hard on death march)

@@xillex819 for me it's a tie between Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.. 1'st has dense, interesting, dark quest (and awesome villain), 2'nd has a beautiful fantasy setting, full of jokes, twists, and old characters from books (got a soft spot for Regis, was cool to see Anna Henrietta etc.)
I know I'm picking on an older comment here, but one of the great things about O'Dimm is that he has a solid amount of lines and scenes, but not too much (in comparison to other well-written characters like Solas from Dragon Age or Kreia from KoTOR 2). He is amazingly presented, but I'm not sure if "well-written" is the most fitting term here. Us not knowing much about him, about the details of his personality, powers and story/lore make him so much more exciting and menacing. We get hints, and our fantasy fills the rest with stories about evil we encountered in other media. On the other hand, I guess them knowing when to stop giving exposition, when to stop writing, also counts as "well-written".
two things i love about him: He has puppy eyes, and innocent almost childlike gaze, for most of the game , he looks like a kind guy just trying to help He doesn't answer questions about himself directly, he always throws the ball back at you or remains purposely vague, right from the start when Geralt asks something like"where are you going? to collect another debt?" and his answer is just "perhaps"
You can actually pass by the place where you meet O'Dimm pretty early in the game and hear children singing his theme. I originally heard it during my preparation for the wild hunt fight and thought nothing of it. when I heard this afterward... well I was creeped out to hell.

The end isn't that you slay the big baddie and live happily ever after... It's simply that you are spared by evil incarnate by beating him at his own game of wits. Then you get to live another day. Fucking brilliant.
Dettlaff and Syanna were good antagonists, The Wild Hunt and the Crones were good antagonists as well... but Mr. O'Dimm... oh, he was the best of them all by far.
Dettlaff wasn't really a villain. Poor guy was a victim and tbh even Syanna was a victim but her motives were far darker and that made her the real Beast of Beauclair. Gaunter O'Dimm : Such an intriguing character and pure evil. Also, I liked how he could judge people by their true nature.
The 1st time I played the DLC I over heard several kids singing to this tune and I couldn't help but stop roach and listen to them sing, creepy as f*ck
I overheard those kids way before I started the DLC. I believe kids appear after the DLC is installed. I also thought that it was too creepy, only to understand the real reason after tens of hours of gameplay.
Kids singing lullabies together can very very very often become creepy af haha But I feel you, the first time I heard it was just before going to meet him after he saves Geralt from the Ofieri. (I went to the meeting spot during the day and kids were there) I thought it was pretty creepy based on the way it sounded and the lyrics. Goes without saying that I nearly shat my pants when Gaunter showed up in the night whistling that exact same tune haha
He was such a great character. They need to have him in CyberPunk. Hear people humming his theme or something. Just to let you know hes still here. The fact he makes you feel powerless is terrifying.
CDPR seems pretty adamant about keeping their two franchises separated lore wise though. They've been asked about Gaunter and Ciri both several times and each time has been met with firm answers.
An advert with his leitmotif. A bloodstained wooden spoon. An archaic looking mirror. Broken glass. Many ways you could subtly reference him without outright putting him in.
first villian/boss i decided i just didn't want anything to do with at the end. "nope im not gonna step in and save this dude, nope i don't wan't a reward, nope i don't ever, ever wanna see you again".
Best villain ever in a video game. I have only one big fucking problem with Hearts of Stone: it's too short. At the end I was like "this is it? NOOOOO BUT I WANT MOOOOOORE" Best expansion I've ever played in a video game.
Blood and Wine brought a whole new scenery to explore and a giant map with plenty of exploration, plus some pretty cool quests. But Hearts of Stone kept me intrigued from start to finish, all the time, I could not lay off that DLC.
The fact that is was short is the reason why this expansion is a master piece. They didn't made more quest FedEx to keep to player playing. They preferred tell their stories and end at the good moment, without force to player to play quests that he doesn't want to do like Bethesda is doing. Witcher 3 is an excellent make, but he would have been better without the FedEx quests and the Skellige sea objectives. But the DLC, them, were true Masterpiece
This is the most frightening villain in this game, in my opinion. Not only does he petrify me, but his music is wonderfully terrifying. My muscles tense and my heart races when I listen to this, as if something will lay a hand on me from behind. I listened to this on a jog and felt like I was running for my life. Absolutely, mesmerizingly, devastatingly awe inspiring! Way to go, Witcher!
I just did the Blood and Wine quest where you lift the curse off Marlene, who's been a spoon obsessed wight for 100 years. Afterwards, when Geralt told the majordomo about how she was cursed by a "beggar" after refusing to give him food, Gaunter's theme played. Goosebumps
I think its pretty clear that Gaunter is a variation of Lucifer. Or the proverbial genie (not the Disney variety) the one that grants your wishes but puts an evil twist in there just to mess with you and prey on human weakness. And Olgierd was just someone who fell for at his worst moment. He didn't have any evil intentions. Whatever he did, he did it for his love.
I honestly thought he was a Spy or Master Thief at first, since he seemed more knowledgeable then the average peasant and was nicknamed "Master Mirror". Needless to say I was so very wrong.
In Hearts of Stone, Gaunter O' Dimm asks you to see him first before speaking with Olgierd to plot something against him. If you don't go to that meeting place of O' Dimm and directly go to Olgeird, when you reach his house O' Dimm would be sitting on top of a tree and a cutscene will play where he will warn you about double crossing him. This happened the first time i played. Mind Blown.
I would tell him up front I dont want to have any wishes granted just want to talk because I think it be an intresting conversation. Then wish him well on his travels.
the expansion pass of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is the best deal ever in gaming. Both ''Hearts of Stone'' and ''Blood and Wine'' are masterpieces. and that's on top of the original game which in itself was already one of the great RPGs of all time. After more than 300 hours on it, i can safely say that it is my #1 all-time favourite. Thank You CD PROJEKT RED!!
You have to put yourself in Gaunter's mindset though - what fun would it be to just kill someone who's a threat to you? Where's the challenge? He has this ability and immortality - he can be banished but not killed. He views humans, all life, as lesser and thus trivial to end. If he were fighting for his very existence against an equal he might try to kill them, but he's bound by rules of conduct and personal creeds that limit him. An immortal/borderline omniscient being would have to do this to keep from losing their sanity/growing bored with power. Geralt is a special case in that he's useful to an end goal (fulfill Olgierd's wishes), far more capable than most (one of a kind, even among witchers), and could actually be swayed into Gaunter's employ long term despite realizing the risk (not necessarily a friend, but a possible associate. Geralt has s good heart but Witchers are bound to their jobs; if Gaunter repeatedly offers and the tasks arent overtly evil he could be a long-term contact). Why kill such an interesting case? If you're so full of yourself you view even the most extraordinary thing as pitiful and weak, despite its merits, why not let it try its hand at stopping you? Worst case scenario you somehow lose to it; ideal, and most likely, scenario: you win as always and add it to your collection of playthings. Gaunter is, by all accounts, drunk on his own power; he underestimates Geralt because he doesn't view any living thing as being able to rival him. He has no interest in killing as it, like the living it afflicts, is mundane - boring, lackluster, played out. Everything dies eventually in the corporeal world, why waste his time with it - it's hardly an appropriate punishment unless the individual obstructs him enough to annoy (in which case it's just a way of reinforcing how worthless he views the living. Cue drunk and spoon).
ahh, the demon that fulfills wishes through pacts... one of the oldest and most often told elements in European folklore and yet it works brilliantly still
Before officially starting the Hearts of Stone quests, I was riding by the crossroads outside Yantra on my way to some other quest, when this song, sung by a bunch of village kids sitting on the ground, caught my attention. Something about the song made me feel slightly uneasy. Perhaps it was the contrast between the carefree and innocent kids and the ominous and dark tune of the song. So I got curious, stopped Roach, and started listening. And the more I listened, the more unsettled I felt. At the time I didn't even know that the song came from the expansion pack, so I thought to myself: "Wow, CD Projekt really invested lots of time and efforts into small and seemingly mundane details such as this song to add so much more depth and soul into the Witcher world." From that time on, every time I happened to travel by Yantra, I would meditate at the crossroad until the kids show up so I could listen to them singing the song again.
i had the exact same reaction when i first listened to the music the kids were singing. I thought "wow what the fuck are these kids doing". i didn't even associated with gaunter or the dlc at all.
same here, I also stopped and started listening what they were saying. I soon left as Yantra and all those areas are very outskirts and dangerous. I also never knew this song was his theme. G.O.D also appears throughout the game in various cut scens as a background character. This is the best villain by far and best boss fight where you actually don't fight him but outsmart him.
I was riding to do all the question marks, suddenly heard this song from the kids, I just think it's good song and keep riding. But I heard it more and more when I went farther right side of the map, and it really creepy because all kids know this song.

You are right. Buying The Witcher 3 and its add-ons was one of the rare occasions, when I was actually happy to spend money for the amazing work everybody at CD Project Red put into this game. In fact, comparing it to other games/developers/publishers it even felt a bit too low-priced all in all.

Never in all my years of gaming has a villain ever sent chills through my spine as much as Gaunter O'Dimm, at first he seems harmless, almost human even, I had even forgotten about him entirely by the time I started playing Hearts of Stone, and then slowly he reveals himself to you, and the primal fear of the unknown within you slowly begins to squirm, you begin to realize that, he is something that could REALLY bring harm to you, and without even saying it, you know his true identity. Damn, I love this game and the inspiration it draws from old folk tales!!!
Would be epic if they ended the first season of The Witcher Netflix series with Gaunter O' Dimm walking out of a dark corner in a town walking towards the camera while whistling his song, then ending the credits with his song, leading up to season 2 and his entering.. :P
I love how "normal" Gaunter looks. He doesn't look like an important character. He looks like a random npc in the game, and that's brilliant. He's not supposed to stick out. It actually makes him more creepy.

And when he loses he accepts defeat even tho HE was the judge of the contest himself

i personally think its more then just 'walking away' i think the scary part is not the absolute laws of his power and deals, but the way he manipulates us, like a trickster.
Just like Loki was a trickster in Norse mythology, but was not nearly as strong as Thor or Odin and many other gods.

no need for assumtions. The notes in the house refer to a begger and vagrant that cursed her. Even her dialogue all but confirms it's Gaunter o' Dimm

I don't remember where into the quest it happens, I think Marlene herself speaks the words "master mirror" or something like that when she tells you what happened to her while she works at Corvo Bianco. Bunch of boy scout that's what they are, nothing more than elves who spent 3 years in the gym before going for a world hopping trip. But O'Dim? He's on another level of intimidating.
He fucking makes the crones look like maggots
It's just a bunny until you need to use The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.
True
When I got Heart of Stone, I didn't immediately jump into the quests. I cleaned out all those new Question Marks that popped up on my map. After the local populace came back to a place that I rid of ghouls, a small circle of children started chanting this little diddy I haven't heard before, suprising to me since I played the game for about 80 hours already. I wrote it off as a neat little detail. When Gaunter approached Geralt on the Offieri ship, the dots connected immediately and I don't think I ever had such an intense case of dread-filled goosebumps~
Panuska There are also children singing his tune at the crossroad where he tells you to meet him.
And then it returns near the end, and you finally know it's not all children's rhymes but something else...
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall, give what I wish for most above all." and the Man of Glass shall grant your wish.
Yeah same. I was like hmmm this a creepy song about.....Gaunter. Then the reprise to outsmart him in his world. And I was like goodness
The Crones would wet themselves if Master Mirror got angry with them
Haha I feel exactly the same.
I wonder what a contract between them would look like
The crones disgust me. But O’Dimm truly *terrifies* me.

- Do you really wish to know ?
- Yes.
- No, Geralt, you don't. This one time I shall spare you and not grant your wish. All who have learned my true name are now either dead or have met an even worse fate. Yet I still need you.

He's a penguin.
The fact that you meet him right at the start of the game and that they then managed to tie him into such a wild story is just beautiful.
"He grants you what you wish not what you want" Professor Premethine Shakeslock - Oxenfurt Academy
What does that even mean? It doesn't make sense

Yes.
It was hell lot more interesting.
well, you can't really top the Devil, he's the ultimate antagonist. Except of course Super Devil, he's always better.
I agree the Wild Hunt, and specially Eredin were weak villans
Man... I feel bad for Eredin. Gaunter, The Crones and Dettlaff really out-shine him as a villain
Ok, maybe not villain, but definitely antagonist
Aye.. Gaunter O'Dimm, Dettlaff and The Unseen Elder easily outshine Eredin.
The Crones ? Well, meh ! But they were such naughty ladies !
@@SiddharthSinghFiery69 detlaff was hard as fuck to beat but I figured out you just need to dodge

You get what you wish, no what you want.
The best video game villian of all time.
excuse me, villain????
But was he actually the villain? That’s the catch...
not a villain he only bring miss fortune apon the bad
Majora is very close second
- If you get the good ending, he will say something in 3 different languages, translated to:
"You are insignificant. You think you've defeated me, but you are wrong. I cant be killed. I will be back."
Gaunter was given more attention, and has always been more present than what meets the eye, and hopefully, he will come back in future games!
Mighty Tigah what if he becomes a recurring CDProject villain? Like he appears as a dlc villain in other CDP games? Would be very badass
well he is already in the Gwent game and i think he will come back in The Witcher 4

Also expected more interactions between him and Cirila, considering she was interested in him and he had plans for her.
I think CDPR even admitted that the Wild Hunt was quite lacking as villain.

The last time i was so scared of a video game character was years ago when i first talked to Sovereign in Mass Effect.
Sovereign was WAAAAAAY more intense than Harbinger right? Or is that just me?
You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it.

Red Riding Wolf Thank you for this explanation as I think it best captures the intention of CDPR and their basis in Slavic folklore.

His intentions might not be great but it's your own fault for signing the contract. So why is he called the devil?
Here in Italy we always say that God is a Dog in fact... xD

They initially planned to include the Nilfgaardian quests(from the camp) in the main story. Hopefully they will release a director's cut in the future.
@@vaidhyanathanc682 every game cuts its content and i barely hear of anyone releasing directors cut (never tbh)

Gaunter O' Dimm has to be one of the best-written characters in video game history hands down.
On the other hand, I guess them knowing when to stop giving exposition, when to stop writing, also counts as "well-written".
two things i love about him:
He has puppy eyes, and innocent almost childlike gaze, for most of the game , he looks like a kind guy just trying to help
He doesn't answer questions about himself directly, he always throws the ball back at you or remains purposely vague, right from the start when Geralt asks something like"where are you going? to collect another debt?" and his answer is just "perhaps"
After playing Witcher 3...other games just stop to exist
MD Except for a few like Dark Souls 3.
Ancient Veritas or God of war 2018
It will be better. In 2 or 3 years
Dark souls/ BOTW for gameplay, witcher 3 for story, done.
Red dead 2?

You're quite right - a terrific game with superb villains throughout
Dettlaff wasn't really a villain. Poor guy was a victim and tbh even Syanna was a victim but her motives were far darker and that made her the real Beast of Beauclair.
Gaunter O'Dimm : Such an intriguing character and pure evil. Also, I liked how he could judge people by their true nature.

The 1st time I played the DLC I over heard several kids singing to this tune and I couldn't help but stop roach and listen to them sing, creepy as f*ck
Connor Weir yeah, i wonder if those kids know O’dimm or just CDPR messing with our heads 😂
Creepy af
I overheard those kids way before I started the DLC. I believe kids appear after the DLC is installed. I also thought that it was too creepy, only to understand the real reason after tens of hours of gameplay.
Kids singing lullabies together can very very very often become creepy af haha
But I feel you, the first time I heard it was just before going to meet him after he saves Geralt from the Ofieri. (I went to the meeting spot during the day and kids were there)
I thought it was pretty creepy based on the way it sounded and the lyrics.
A small Easter egg wouldn't do any harm, and would generate much fan buzz and good will.

Best villain ever in a video game.
I have only one big fucking problem with Hearts of Stone: it's too short. At the end I was like "this is it? NOOOOO BUT I WANT MOOOOOORE"
Best expansion I've ever played in a video game.
I enjoyed Blood and Wine a little more but Hearts of Stone is still my 2nd favorite video game dlc imo.
Gaunter O'dimm : tell me your wish, I'll make it come true.

Aaaye it must've been this way...
I was more terrified by the crones and their theme. i like these creepy songs more. It reminds me of the drunken Whaler song from dishonoured
yea i don't know why but every time i listen to this i get chicken skin and shivers down my spine
Why would you listen to that while jogging lol?
Tho I really can picture it, must've been terrifying!
To decide the fate of a man with a stone heart, Geralt did what no witcher had ever done before
He outplayed the devil himself
Olgierd Von Everec flagged this for hatespeech.
haha xDD
I just did the Blood and Wine quest where you lift the curse off Marlene, who's been a spoon obsessed wight for 100 years.
Afterwards, when Geralt told the majordomo about how she was cursed by a "beggar" after refusing to give him food, Gaunter's theme played. Goosebumps
100% was his doing, who else could turn someone into an entirely extinct monster
This game changed my life, I'll never see another RPG the same way again.
When you go through some of the best missions to save David Beckham from the devil. Fun times. Just finished it again over the weekend
Honestly I let O'Dimm take him. Man turned into a monster. I slew monsters.
@@adcon00 Gaunter seemed like the worse monster to me.
They're all the same, evil. But for me, Olgierd is the lesser evil, so i chose to save him
No Gaunter is not evil he is god punishment to the evil
I think its pretty clear that Gaunter is a variation of Lucifer. Or the proverbial genie (not the Disney variety) the one that grants your wishes but puts an evil twist in there just to mess with you and prey on human weakness. And Olgierd was just someone who fell for at his worst moment. He didn't have any evil intentions. Whatever he did, he did it for his love.
love this character so much, even the first time we met him i though he had a great personality
We all had no clue.....
yeah i know, but i thought he was interesting
I thought he was I irrelevant in the beginning before playing this lol
I honestly thought he was a Spy or Master Thief at first, since he seemed more knowledgeable then the average peasant and was nicknamed "Master Mirror".
Needless to say I was so very wrong.
I'll never forget the time I met him in that tavern at the start. He seemed so innocent.
Mind Blown.
If you see that man... dont wish anything, just run.
But humans are inherently greedy
I would tell him up front I dont want to have any wishes granted just want to talk because I think it be an intresting conversation. Then wish him well on his travels.

@andr andr weak XD
Theboredone weak
Cue drunk and spoon).
ahh, the demon that fulfills wishes through pacts... one of the oldest and most often told elements in European folklore and yet it works brilliantly still
Now THIS is how you write a villain. Sometimes you need to shed the over-the-top intimidation like Eredin and show true evil behind the scenes.
Dinh Nguyen Nguyen same
i had the exact same reaction when i first listened to the music the kids were singing.
