You should watch the whole special. It was filmed, written, produced and (obviously) starred Bo Burnham all throughout 2020. It's an incredible art piece. He released outtakes a year later which includes extra songs and parts. Both of them are amazing and well worth watching.

The funny thing that happened was Covid. In the interlude, he said he felt ready to be back on stage in January 2020. The irony is that he worked on himself all that time and when he was ready, everything closed and nobody could perform live for quite a while. This was filmed during the covid lockdown.

    • @jaristoppelenburg
      @jaristoppelenburg 11 месяцев назад

Interesting, I (and some other people I’ve talked to about it) interpreted the “funniest thing” happening as the panic attacks coming right back the moment he got back on stage. An analogy would be someone who is on antidepressants overestimating how fast they can ditch their medication cause their live is going a bit better and, the moment they stop the medication, they fall back into their old self-destructive habits.

@@jaristoppelenburggiven he is once again performing, the “audience” laughs as if they know exactly what’s meant, him literally specifying he started thinking this in early 2020, the entire special being a depiction of mental health deterioration in quarantine, and him not elaborating that the funny thing was he began having panic attacks, which would be the much needed stinger at the end if the intent wasn’t to reference an event we all knew happened.

Bo is one of the original music RUclipsrs, so he's a lot more popular then people realize, and he's also a lot more talented then people realize, but he basically fell off the planet from 2015 to 2020 because of his own personal mental issues. If he would have been actively creating during that time, everybody would know who he is. He's basically a George Carlin that likes to sing/rap.

The "funny thing" that happened is of course the pandemic and the lockdown which forced him to make the entire comedy special without being able to get in front of an audience so the entire thing is just him working through that alone inside this little shack... But while a lot of it is funny it also gets super real a lot of the time

  • @-Rambi-
    @-Rambi- Год назад +21

Per usual, great reaction and dissection.
The "funny thing" was the pandemic,
if we listen to the song again with that in mind it all kind of fall into place.
"Got it? Good, now get inside
We're goin' to go where everybody knows
    Everybody knows, everybody knows
We're goin' to go where everybody knows
    Everybody knows"
Also Rosalie, I highly recommend to watch his "Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant)" that was his last performance before he had to take a 5 year break.
He even tells the on-watchers what is going on and is met with cheers and laughter, it is quite the experience.
And after that, of course the whole Inside special, I watched it 7 times and it still gets to me.

Bo is great, welcome to the rabbit hole 😂 Everything he has done is awesome. He is a singing comedian much life the Australian "Tim Minchin"
This whole special, Bo locked himself away in the room in the backyard and made the whole thing by himself. Lighting, production, creativity etc was all him. You can see his hair and beard grow over the months he was in there. He does a funny song about reaction videos too 😂

The next song should 100% be his Kanye rant. It is the show that lead to him leaving his career for 5 years. Like, literally after performing that song.
Edit: Also, be aware that early Bo is probably not your cup of tea. His real early stuff was shock-style writing and he says a lot of stuff that you won't like, just based off of your comments on worldly content in music and videos.

Love your reactions Rosalie! This one is a tough one to grasp without the full backstory which I'm sure you can read all about from others in the comments. Once you have the full context, it becomes easier to see why this isn't a song as much as a 'performance'. If you really want to see peek Bo from a psychoanalysis perspective I can't recommend "The Kanye Rant" enough. It was the last special before he took 5 years off and it basically is a study in how fame was wearing him down, done in a performance that is funny, disturbing, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Hope you can get to it, it is right up your ally.

Though it wasn't on the same level as Bo I had the same sort of thing happen around that time. I was into a two year slump starting in 2018. Lost both my parents before their time and unexpetidly, lost my job, lost my drivers license for BS reasons which is my ONLY ticket back into a job since every job I ever had relies on me having a license. I have zero references without it. Mechanic, truck driver, delivery driver etc and as a life long car enthusiast my entire social life depends on it as well. I'm a car guy, all my friends are car guys/girls and none of us really live close to each other. I lost that connection with all of them since I couldn't attend anything any more. I was about to just call it right then and meet my maker. Nothing mattered any more.
Then in the beginning of 2020 I started gathering up my pieces, got in touch with a therapist, started the process of getting my license back and started getting back on my feet. Then the whole f*cking world shut down. No therapist. No gathering up pieces. No nothing. Just nothing for the next two years while we all wore masks and kept to ourselves. The last thing I needed right then. Just keep stewing in that same slump again for another two years. It'll take years to start that process over again but I still hope I can get back to that. Almost 7 years since I had a social life to speak of, a job, an income. Anything. COVID f*cked people in so many ways.
I hope Bo is doing well and that he's comfortable!

As this is still fresh in your mind it would be great to react to his previous special "make happy" and the last track "Can't handle this (kanye rant)"
It will create an timeline of him and you understand better where he is at musically and mentally and who he is as an artist.
This special, the inside, was filmed during lock down and he did the whole thing in his room. I was personally in a very bad place when it came out and it felt so relatable and familiar. Now watching it after when I am little better it hurts to see.

the line and title "all ryes on me" is both the command to the audience and a statement from Bo's perspective, as he already has all eyes on him, the cause of his anxiety on stage, but as a performer he still wants those eyes on him nonetheless. The entire song has personal and universal introspective meanings, hitting different people differently, depending on where you are mentally and what you know... that is why it is genius and deserves that Grammy, because it can be universal on one hand but it can be very personal on the other with the very same line.

Excellent reaction and you took the time to share your thoughts at the end, thank you for sharing!
1:57 -- You say this sounds familiar, you may've heard All Day by Kanye, or Runaway, which this song is parodying aspects of. He uses almost the exact same musical elements and performance styles, crowned by the delivery of a deeply personal, auto-tuned monologue. That monologue satirizes not only Kanye's artistic expression, but celebrity vulnerability and the spectacle of public breakdowns in general while simultaneously being genuinely being self-reflective and self-effacing.
Instead of pointing to Kanye's arrogance directly, he was thoughtful enough to have the introspection to point at himself first. Alone in a room, but playing audience noises back to himself and escalating that shared elation of "get your f'in hands up" to a much demanding ~pray for me~. Simple and poignant on multiple levels.

When you listen to more Bo you'll pick up on a theme of his own struggles with fame, lyrics in previous songs include 'my drugs attention, I am an addict but I get paid to indulge in my habit' and his Kanye Rant which is essentially the prequel to this song he talks about how he can't cope or handle his situation and has an actual panic attack on stage which then prompted his 5 year break before he released the Inside special, the whole Kanye Rant is a metaphor for struggling to keep it all under wraps, in this song I interpreted his all eyes on me/pray for me duality as an acknowledgement of how conflicted he is, one moment he wants all of the eyes and attention but then he flips to wanting people to pray for him because he knows he needs the help but in the next moment he craves the attention again and he constantly flips between wanting the adoration and praise to wanting thoughts and prayers so he can beat the impulse. And to top that off after 5 years away when he finally decides to get back out there and subject himself to his fans wishes for the content he creates, the entire world goes into lockdown and he's left on his own again.
One of the great things about Bo is that every lyric is purposeful and agonized over, and can be interpreted many different ways. His Inside special is the first time in 34 years that I felt like I understood why people like art. To that point I always thought of art as incredibly pretentious, interpreting a painting and professing to understand the mind of the painter with some waffle about how "the melancholy of the situation can be inferred from the painters use of drab colours and how the brush strokes convey a sense of urgency as we approach the end" but then I watched Inside and I felt myself doing that on almost every one of his songs and I felt like I finally got it.
Also whilst this is a great song, it's definitely one of his most straightforward and lyrically sparse. If you really want to get into the mental health conversations then some great songs to listen to from him include:
Kanye Rant - The prequel to this song, he has a panic attack through it and then immediately goes on a 5 year hiatus before dropping Inside in the middle of the pandemic. He goes into the struggle of wanting to be authentic whilst also wanting to give his fans what they want.
Welcome to the internet - A presentation of how random and dangerous the internet can be, and how companies use the internet to reel us in and control our lives
Country Music - Just a hilarious take on how generic and bland the country music scene is with copy pasted lyrics to appeal to their demographic
Repeat Stuff - A commentary on the R&B scene and how companies target young girls with generic lyrics designed to take advantage of them during formative years
From Gods Perspective - A song about some of the sillier parts of some theologies
How the World Works - A commentary on white priviledge
White Woman's Instagram - An analysis of how fake the persona we present on social media is
Problematic - A view on cancel culture as well as a self reflection on his own early days where he was offensive for the sake of it
30 - Rueing a lack of accomplishments by a milestone age compared to generations that came before us
That Funny Feeling - An observation on how utterly ridiculous some aspects of society are and how you can only watch from the sidelines as humanity continues on its nonsensical path of destruction

First time to the channel, I really enjoyed your review, your talented, articulate, and animated. And unintentionally hilarious with the two attempts all call and response. IMO this was the wrong song for an introduction because he has been brilliant at this for 15 years, inspite of his time off and COVID. I'm sure he wrote and played music all throughout that time. And if you go back ten years you will see the progression from light to dark.
On a side note if you don't know The Smothers Brothers, Tommy died recently, I'm sure you enjoy their work.
I paused your video 3/4 way in to look at your channel and was intrigued by your simply perfect playlist setup. I'm learning Spanish and this will make it very easy to take a deeper dive. Have a happy holiday or whatever.

This song must be so confusing when just pulled and listened to without the knowing the context around it, or Bo in general. There are many who read deep 'extra' messages in this song, which is great that he can makes songs that inspire that in people. But it appears rather straightforward to me. This song (and special) was made during the pandemic. He just got himself in a better state of mind to tour again and then was forced to shelter and make this special from his room, like he did when he was young. Everyone who watched this when it came out was in that 'horror lockdown' state of mind and they watched it just as isolated as he was. When you hear this song in context with the virus and lockdowns, it can fill you with existential dread. "We're not gonna stop it (the virus) heaven knows we tried, got it? good, now get inside!"... I take liberties on some lines myself, just like I mentioned that others do. I like to believe that when "we're going to go where everybody knows everybody", that is the internet. It fits so well with the whole theme of the show, and another great song of his ... "Welcome to the Internet"

You will love "Welcome to the Internet". IMO 90% of this guys songs are great and the other 10 are good. This is Bo's M.O. He gets you into the songs by being funny then he hits you with something soul wrenchingly profound. Just dive in the water's fine.

I love your reactions, especially to the Warning..I would love to bring you back to The Warning by requesting "XXI Century Blood the Music Video." You were blown away by Disciple Video.Try this one out as they won 4 awards on it. Pau wrote the song and script for the Video. I can't buy you a coffee as I just exist now after losing my wife 3 years ago suddenly. Thank you.

I think you are spot-on when you talk about what this song is about. The funny thing he mentions, however, is in reference to the pandemic happening.
Also, definitely react to Welcome To The Internet next. It's a great song, too.
EDIT: Okay, I have it in its original form now (kind of, don't really remember it exactly), and it's still here, however my comment asking why my comments are being removed is now gone.

Having been messing around various music reactors channels and following most of, what I would call, true musical souls. I hardly ever, as in never really saw anyone reacting to these two geniuses. from The Milk Carton Kids. Their performances are stunning. Their stage act, absolutely brilliant. Intelligent comedy with world class musical performance. Their voices blend so well!
They do a cover of "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd - ruclips.net/video/tlhFmPvAdes/видео.html - absolutely beautiful.
Their own material is even better.
Maybe It´s Time - ruclips.net/video/l-umN7ah0qM/видео.html - yea, speaks for itself.
Please, if you haven´t. You must.
Enjoy nomatter what. thank you for being here.

    I tend to say I’m fine…when I’m not…..
when he refers to the situation of covid as something funny happened, it’s a cover and he’s baiting the audience. If this was in front of an audience they would have taken the bait…covid wasn’t funny at all, it reveals how we gloss over things, he inserted laughter because people would have laughed instead of reacting with introspection.

Him saying "all eyes on me" feels a bit different when you have the knowledge that when he used to perform in front of live audiences, he started getting severe panic attacks, doesn't it?
From the intro of one of his earlier specials. "You used to do comedy when you felt like being funny, but now you're contractually obligated, so dance you f&#%ing monkey. Dance, monkey! Dance!".
He started cracking a long time before he had to take a mental health break. The deepest look into his mental state, though? The finale song from his last special before the break. Kanye Rant from Make Happy. Won't spoil that one by quoting it. Would love to see a reaction to it.

@@rosalieelliottofficial because if you missed that part, you missed the entire thing. And a ridiculous amount of people don't think for 2 seconds about why he's putting so much emphasis on the date and just pretend they understand what he's getting at. It makes the whole reaction worthless.
No hate on your overall channel, but it's hard to not see this as a reaction farming views when it doesn't care at all to analyze such a good piece of art.
