he's amazing but he's not true, and he's not meant to be xD most pop musicians like Taylor Swift start with a guitar or piano and wrote their songs, then they will take their acoustic piece to a writer such a max Martin, and they will build an electronic synthy backing track around the original song. so none the less it always starts with an instrument, the artists do have talent, and people spend endless hours writing the music, whether it's on a computer or instrument. if it was as easy as this video makes out everybody would be millionaires. so don't take him seriously, he's just joking
TheDGGB He says what people want to think is right, it isn't right though. People like Adele unlike Taylor do write jackshit, but even if they dont, somebody will have written the song and spent countless hours making it.

5 steps to Writing a pop song 1.) Suck at instruments 2.) Sing about your Girl Friend, and how sad you are that she left you. 3.) have people write the song for you Instead of actually writing it yourself 4.) Be as repetitive as could be 5.) suck in general
people don't know what they're listening to, nor do they care or WANT to know. Think they care it's simple and crap with no meaning? No, they see music as just a beat to dance to, or a background noise that doesn't disturb you and grab your attention, but at the same time it feels like a conversation is a little more lively with something playing in the background. Anyone who worked with music and studied at least a bit of theory will tell you pop is garbage, but most people have no clue and just like it because it's catchy and fun and easy. We can make 9001 parody videos and vids telling people why pop is shit but pop will always be the #1 genre, sadly. Always has been, always will be, but if it's any consolation, good music remains. People don't remember 5% of 70s pop hits, but bohemian rhapsody is still a song that amasses hundreds of millions of views 45 years after its release. It's always been my philosophy to ignore pop and just keep doing my own thing. Don't go around hating on people for listening to pop, just....each to their own. At least I know my music will be remembered for decades to come, while pop fans literally can't name 5 songs that were popular 4 years ago.
***** man, I live in a religious family. Hardcore religious. Anything with guitar in it=satan. You know how much shit I get from my family for listening to rock and metal? XD and I get the same experience you do in school. "But that's just yelling and screaming satanic shit, why can't you listen to nice music like lil wayne or one direction (it's pretty popular here)" i dont even know how to reply to these people XD
Or when they say "I can't understand any of that satanic crap" well, if you can't understand it then how do you know it's satanic? Lol people are weird
How time make Pop Music: 1). Make the lyrics about something personal that no one cares about (don’t forget to auto tune the heck out of it!) 2). Make a simple, repetitive beat 3). Make a simple synthesized melody 4). Sell it to Interscope Records or something 5). Tell the radio to overplay it 6). Boom! That’s how you make it. Now just sit back, relax, and listen to teenage girls talk about how it’s the best song in the world.
When I was younger, my next door neighbor, my little sister, and I were trying to write a good theme song, and I spent a long time (possibly 2 hours for a 10 second clip) writing a cool melody, a harmony part, a nice drum beat, and then my sister just put a few loops together, and then at the end just said a couple words with a reverb-vocals preset, which took about a minute to throw together (actually, it was just under 10 minutes, but close enough), and won. The other two did a similar thing, but my sister’s was “better” because it had a denser mix that was less repetitive (because, you know, they used about 10 loops instead of 3). At that age, my neighbors were writing 4 loop pop songs, and I was writing basic orchestral pieces like those we played in 6th grade Orchestra (which probably would sound terrible to me now).
Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Too funny Steve. I love how Dottie didn't even care that you were sticking your butt in her face. Crazy dog. That nice green grass makes me want summer. It is Jan. 3, 2016 and 11F here today. The coldest day this winter so far. Well another great video under your belt Steve.

+Nagy Gergely To be honest, I think Jared is a really good overall producer, but Steve would kill him in guitar playing... it wouldn't even be a close contest. I've never had Jared impress me with his guitar playing, but I think as an overall personality, producer, and entertainer... I really like him. But Steve is just incredible, so under rated.
Pop music decades ago didn't use to be this shit. It has just been slowly adapting assembly line rhetoric over the years as with everything else. From making music to making money, essentially.
Stop Triggering Me Perhaps you're right. I really like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Todd Rundgren, John Denver, etc. and I wouldn't question their ability to write and perform good music. I do, however, agree that popular music today, in general, is garbage and that this video is a great example of what the industry has become.
+TOCS may i recommend vienna teng? Shes very piano oriented for the most part! But she mixes in electronic and acoustic instruments in her music. overall Very dynamic music. Inland territory and Aims would be albums to start with! Good day!
don´t threat the enitirty of the metal music community understands you. With Hip hop i am not so sure since modern rap music is basically the same thing as pop only spoken rather than sung with a shitload of auto tune.
Well, at least there's actual drum beats and a better bass than what contemporary low-budget Popstars and Rappers use. There's none of that ticking beat or farting bass that they use.
Stir Fry the sad thing is that ed is literally the only pop singer and a songwriter with meaningful lyrics but he has one shitty song and it's his most popular song... i don't get it
You should listen to more of his music. I've been a metalhead for almost 10 years now, but I honestly feel like most of his music is actually very well written. It's kind of sad that his most popular songs are also by far his worst songs.
Arnav Covers That's true. I went through my pop music phase a little more than a year ago and I mostly listened to ed sheeran but also a lot of other pop artists like justin bieber, shawn mendes or taylor swift. Now I can't stand pop music and the only musician with pop songs I sometimes enjoj listening to is ed because his lyrics are actually based on his emotions and true stories (like nancy mulligan is about how his grandparents met and fell in love)
Bar Goldstein 80's good pop combined the 4/4 beats with musical arrangements that came from the r'n'b, soul, rock and even classical music. The musical arrangements told a great story in itself and the lyrics completed the total image of it. Nowadays, all instruments go the 4/4 so there's no such a story tale in the arrangement and vocally you reduce to a repetitive syllable like "oh-oh-oh", three times. Ask Katy Perry. But I have to say all pop songs are enjoyaboe in their own way :)
"Now if you don't have any musical talent, you can't sing, you can't play an instrument, you can't write music - it's you're lucky day - cause you're a perfect candidate for a pop star"!! Made me laugh.
Taylor was a million times more intersting when she still made country music. And I hate country, but its better than pop crap because there is actual musicianship involved.
Do they even have quality checks for pop artists now, back in the 90s, i think, pop music was at least good. Pop music was popular because it's good, now it's popular because PEOPLE ARE MINDLESS ZOMBIES THAT LIKE SOMETHING BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE LIKES IT!

Would you like that?
That would be funny if it wasn't so true... P.S.: one more thing to make your pop song even more trending - a shit-tone of generic trap subbass fart. Ta-da-a-a!
Jackson Newton , Yeah, they call themselves "beliebers" and suck of One direction. They have no sense of what music really was back in the mid twentieth century.
rap isnt pop. all i have to say is im the only metalhead at my school, and, just to give you an idea, they think lil wayne can play guitar and hes the best guy in the world...
Pop is basically the only music that I don't consider art, because it's entire, 100% reason for existing is to sell. There's so creativity of imagination in its creation.
Djentleman You can't be serious... Of course it requires creativity and talent to write and produce a pop song! I hate these mainstream-hating critics (basically 95% of the people in this video's comment section). Why can't we all appreciate every form of art and the work it takes to produce an artpiece. Especially pop songs are extremely hard to produce properly. Try to write something that is melodically strong and catchy but not boring to listen to! And the production of most pop songs nowdays is really impressive. It doesn't matter if it's made to sell! It's still art!
I truly don't get why you people say pop sucks, because so many respectable musicians did pop music (Michael Jackson, ABBA, David Bowie, The Beatles for instance, hello?). But of course it has its bad, just like any other genre. I think it depends on the musician's skills and the passion put into it (Tears for Fears are a great example, in my opinion. A must listen)
Nour Sarhan - to be fair, all the ones you listed started and existed long before the use of pre made beats and computer software became a big thing in pop music. the beatles played their own instruments for fuck sake. out of all the artists you listed, how many of them wrote or relied on songs about going to the clubs and having sex and taking drugs, in their discography. when people hate on pop music like with this video and its comment section, you do realise its more aimed towards pop music after the music was all made on a laptop. cause thats when it started, when it became generic.
Which is more important: how the music sounds or how hard it was to make? If you'd take complexity to a very high level, for example have a song that has multiple changes in time signature, 10 main melodies playing at the same time and a long, complex progression, would it really be nice to listen to? Just the fact that a song was hard to make doesn't necessarily make it any better.
Pop stars are talented at singing, and dancing while they sing and perform. Most metal vocalists are not talented at singing and so they scream. Give credit where credit is due.
I think he meant modern EDM (Electronic Dance Music). "Pop" acts like Phil Collins, Grace Jones, Human League, Duran Duran, etc. are often much better than that djent metalcore bullshit he listens to, no matter how many unnecessary notes they manage to cram into a single bar.
@@thomastibbs6358 Yeah. Constant chugging with one fret and a few little notes thrown in. Rinse and repeat. And bass? Pfft. Throw that out in the trash. The guitar IS the bass now. I'm sorry, but Metalcore isn't any better friend. At least the pop the original commenter mentioned had more notes played and audible bass.
Bands such as Tool have deep lyrics that express philosophical ideas and explain the problems of this corrupted world. Not to mention extremely complex songs (such as lateralus which uses the Fibonacci Sequence and other mathematical principles). Then we have this genre which is pretty much explained in this example. Thanks Steve

Patrick Deterville I know that, what I mean is that many of them don't. Obviously some are great and have talent (as you mentioned, Adele is one of those) but many just don't. Actually most that I know don't.

TheBoi353 because it’s mass marketed in Target-K Mart-Wal Mart and theyre $10. Biggest irony of it all is Kurt bent over backwards to rebel all things glossy and mainstream, all while writing catchy pop hooks.
5 steps to Writing a pop song
1.) Suck at instruments
2.) Sing about your Girl Friend, and how sad you are that she left you.
3.) have people write the song for you
Instead of actually writing it yourself
4.) Be as repetitive as could be
5.) suck in general
My first pop song will sound like this: ooo oh oohhhhh oooooohh oooo
For ten minutes
You forgot about 6. Autotune the SHIT out of your voice to compensate for your lack of vocal talent
Actual step 5: Use autotune that will make you sound inhumane in the worst way possible.
2:10 sounds like a grass cutter
What's a rude ditch? A crass gutter.
Sounds like mosquitoes :v
sounds like electric shaver
To write a pop song, you must *repeat stuff, repeat stuff, repeat stuff, repeat stuff, repeat stuff!*
that's why my latest pop album features one song 12 times just with different titles ;)

people don't know what they're listening to, nor do they care or WANT to know.
+blazejecar My favorite is when you show someone a metal song and they say "well.. I like the beat"
***** man, I live in a religious family. Hardcore religious. Anything with guitar in it=satan. You know how much shit I get from my family for listening to rock and metal? XD and I get the same experience you do in school. "But that's just yelling and screaming satanic shit, why can't you listen to nice music like lil wayne or one direction (it's pretty popular here)"
i dont even know how to reply to these people XD
Or when they say "I can't understand any of that satanic crap" well, if you can't understand it then how do you know it's satanic? Lol people are weird
sean adams yet those same people will praise gangnam style and say "You dont need to understand the lyrics for the song to be good"
+blazejecar lmao!
How time make Pop Music:
1). Make the lyrics about something personal that no one cares about (don’t forget to auto tune the heck out of it!)
2). Make a simple, repetitive beat
3). Make a simple synthesized melody
4). Sell it to Interscope Records or something
5). Tell the radio to overplay it
6). Boom! That’s how you make it. Now just sit back, relax, and listen to teenage girls talk about how it’s the best song in the world.
You forgot the Kids Who Will blast out the shit song and thinking they are cool
Don't forget the 14 year olds who will say that it's deep
Is there still “Radio”...raydeeyu, radeehi...wait, how do you say it again?
7). Be a dick to your fans, they gonna like it, thus they gonna love your song even more.
8.) Write an incorrect list.
Even dealing with deep deppression you make me laugh man...ty..
@Connor Fox you're a nice man

Beginner
Be careful who you call ugly in middle school.
Michael Tozzi did you get that from Jared's Metal Memes?

Pop music decades ago didn't use to be this shit. It has just been slowly adapting assembly line rhetoric over the years as with everything else. From making music to making money, essentially.
+TOCS na you're just looking in the right places chum :^)
Stop Triggering Me Perhaps you're right. I really like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Todd Rundgren, John Denver, etc. and I wouldn't question their ability to write and perform good music. I do, however, agree that popular music today, in general, is garbage and that this video is a great example of what the industry has become.

80's pop is amazing. 2010s pop is hell
Bar Goldstein BS, 80s pop was just as bad
go listen to some MJ and Talk Talk and them talk
Bar Goldstein 80's good pop combined the 4/4 beats with musical arrangements that came from the r'n'b, soul, rock and even classical music. The musical arrangements told a great story in itself and the lyrics completed the total image of it. Nowadays, all instruments go the 4/4 so there's no such a story tale in the arrangement and vocally you reduce to a repetitive syllable like "oh-oh-oh", three times. Ask Katy Perry. But I have to say all pop songs are enjoyaboe in their own way :)
some pop songs like Uptown Funk (by Mark Ronson) and My Way (by Calvin Harris) are pretty good, but the majority of pop songs are pretty terrible.
I know right? It all kinda died in the late 90s-Early 2000s- wait. No. It all ended when Miley Cyrus was introduced.
"Now if you don't have any musical talent, you can't sing, you can't play an instrument, you can't write music - it's you're lucky day - cause you're a perfect candidate for a pop star"!! Made me laugh.
"Thou shall not steal CRAPPY MUSIC!!"I will quote that forever and always.

Dude in all seriousness, Taylor Swifts new song really does fit these guidelines. The look what you made me do one. It's uncanny!

It's still art!
naw fam pop music is still boring to listen to...
Casey Mather Whoops... Not an argument. Personal preference.
