Garrett is such an awesome guy. I had the pleasure of riding on track with him in 2008 at Jason Disalvo speed academy. He had just turned 16 and was more excited about driving a truck around the track than riding bikes. Have been following his career since then and can’t wait to see him break out in WSBK. He was absurdly fast at 16 already.

You know what, I loved this guy. Gareth Gerloff. I thought he was a typical American. But no, What a genuine, down-to-earth person. Now onwards will definitely notice him during race weekend.

Some of the stuff that he said around the 42:00 mark really hit home. I was once in engineering school and when I started, I sucked horribly at math. There were many months where I thought I was going to fail a class, and have to drop the program but I buried my head in my studies and locked myself in rooms and practiced the equations and learned the material. You are definitely defined by the difficult times in life. Many times, I felt like life was asking me "Hey man, do you really want this degree? Or are you just here to say you want it?". It's funny now because when I tell people I'm an electrical engineer they say "Oh well you must have been really good at math and studies you're whole life." but they couldn't be more wrong. Anything worth having in life will require risk and sacrifice. Do what the man said. Go for it.

Man I'm right there with you. I tell everyone that in my upper classes every textbook looked like hieroglyphics at the beginning of every semester and it made me really question if it was truly what I wanted and if I had what it took. And there were some nights I just laid face down on my bed questioning all my decisions that put me there. But I'd set my alarm, wake up, and get to work. Sure enough, the hieroglyphics would slowly start to make sense. And I'd do more work, and slowly what the professor said would become clearer.. And now here I am, an electrical engineer. Anything worth having isn't easy.

I had the exact same problem in math. Also I wanted to be an electrical engineer. Electronics came to me so easy that I didn't take it serious enough. I had to bone up on math and my love of bikes steered me to mechanical engineering. Mechanical did not come as natural so it was a challenge to get that degree but I did it. I got a job that used both mechanical and electrical so it all worked out in the end. And during all that, I worked through the ranks at Willow Springs and then WERA and finally got to race at the national level with an AMA Pro license. Definitely can't complain! I'm a big fan of GG31. I like how he always seems to improve no matter what.

Excellent interview, Garrett's personality really shines through. As far as I'm concerned any properly fast rider will crash and have sketchy moments when coming through and I think he took his hard year too much to heart. There's a front running rider in there somewhere, all he (and the people around him) have to do is to find a way to let him out.

What a cool and talented guy. For many years i watched national championships beside WSBK and Mgp like BSB, Japanese championship , Moto America or Asia Road Racing. At least Beaubier and Gerloff are definitely the world class riders coming from U.S. . Maybe they did some mistakes when they had the chance to shine at the highest level but the world is not over yet. I hope Gerloff will get a factory ride in the future. Maybe along Toprak with Bmw. Bmw will rise in the future and that can be a good chance for Gerloff too. Anyhow one of my favorite riders on the grid .
