  • Here's a bit of "Wayne and Shuster" from September 19, 1971 called "City Golf" (nothing to do with a 2000s Volkswagen car). Recorded from a 2003 repeat broadcast. Bernard Cowan announces.

On Carlton Street the parking lot is now the Lexington Condominiums right next to Mattamy Athletic Centre.
In 1971, the building is not built yet.

As this began I couldn't believe how familiar those two voices STILL are to me.
I was great to see the old Eaton's and Simpsons stores we used to shop at every now and then.

From 1971 broadcast when I saw no CN Tower, Tall Buildings, Scotiabank Arena or Rogers Centre in City Golf.

In 1971, at Nathan Phillips Square the hole is near the ice rink or pool with no "TORONTO" sign.

Nice shots of Toronto in 1971,before the CN Tower and the Eaton Centre, when City Hall was the new, showcase building.
Wonder why they didn’t play on the CNE grounds,Chinatown on Dundas,Little Italy on College or straight down Bloor Street.

I remember SNL doing a similar bit in the mid-80s; I think it was called The Midtown Classic.

Obviously, they were built much later. The CN Tower came along in 1976; Rogers Centre (as the Skydome), in 1989.

"any unauthorized use of the foregoing material would be highly unlikely" is genius.
No wonder Lorne Michaels married Rosie Shuster.

Memories of Saturday evenings at 7pm before Hockey Night in Canada. They don't make comedy like they used to. Miss this show...

Now this is a classic if there ever was one. Tis sad that these two passed away. At least they will live on repeats hopefully.

Interesting from a 21st century viewpoint. Johnny was better at looking straight at the camera, while Frank seemed to be reading cue cards during the introduction.
And fascinating to see that even 50 years ago, Toronto was not lily-white but there were enough other ethnicities to appear in the crowd scenes.

The crowds were much bigger in Toronto when they came together to celebrate the Raptors victory.

No wonder why traffic in Downtown Toronto is a nightmare in the best of times. Pretty strong argument for using the subway...if a golf ball doesn't slip into a grate.

6:05 - Looking west along Carlton Street to Maple Leaf Gardens. The parking lot across the street is now an apartment building.
6:08 - 6:42 - Directly in front of the Toronto Hydro building at 14 Carlton Street. From 6:37, you can see Yonge Street and College Street in the background.

So when people laugh at the mention of heavy traffic, is it because traffic has always been something Torontonians have complained about or was it so light to call it even “traffic” was a joke?
