- Yeah yeah, I know that this can be done successfully in the F-14, I’m just poking fun at people trying this in the sim.
In all honesty though, it’s actually pretty hard to get the F-14 in a flat spin with the wings folded back - you REALLY have to go out of your way to get this to happen (you need opposite ailerons to induce aileron yaw).

Growling sidewinder proved that differential thrust does work in dogfights in the F14, it just can’t be too aggressive. And in real life only extremely seasoned F14 pilots actually attempted differential thrust, which maverick is
Yeah, what BravoSix did here was too aggressive, you have to roll and yaw when your aircraft has a certain amount of energy and speed, and how hard you pull the joystick

Yeah... the F -14 had significant negative yaw. ( heavy nose and it uses spoilers) The differential thrust helps that. Gonna beat a thrust vectoring 5 that gen? Probably not. The idea is that Maveric is a genius pilot and suprises the inferior felon pilot by his ability to maneuver. Anyway....at high speeds even in afterburner, the control surfaces (level flight) will overcome the torque on the aircraft( even it one engine flames out and does nothing but produce drag).
When the F-14 is slow and in a turn having one engine flame out would likely produce too much yaw to force uncontrolled flight or a spin before the pilot could react. This is even worse in a dogfight. All off the sudden lots of positive yaw when you my have the rudder already into the turn...oh dear. Going from full reheat to zero on one engine is wrong. Just take one out of burner or to about 80 % throttle. You can keep it there as you slow down but at a certain point you have to put the engine back to burner. Remember....energy is key one engine is producing much less thrust. This manuver is abou nose-control when needed and not intended for extended peroids. In a nose to nose fight I believe splitting th throttles will have some use at certain times. That is all. Cheers!

Put it against an mig 21 in a close combat and there is a big chance the f14 might lose because of its big football field size

You only have to take it off burner. Differential thrust works really well if you're very careful with it and you have the altitude or skill to recover.

@@tonyrun5802 Actually, I got with friends while reading about Jalil Zandi's exploits while collecting information from him, Dale Snodgrass and checking them against Ward Carroll's ideas after reading some concepts about differential thrust in rocketry as a potential alternative to gimballing to save weight on first staging. I forget which of my friends explained the concept to GS but he went hard on differential thrust.

Yeah..., great skill you require. Just to apply full aileron towards the rotation and opposite rudder while keeping the stick fully pulled up until the yaw rate gets low enough to be safe to push the stick forward in order to not make the plane dance in roll/yaw. It requires genius brains to do that, lol! Once you learn how easy it is actually, you won't say that anymore:)

The way you split your throttles in order to throw off enemy targeting systems and nosedive to escape their eyesight was amazing. Then hiding yourself in the explosion from your crash? Fantastic.

There were a few maneuvers like this that you could do in an F-18 that would break the fly by wire system, but they were super risky. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I saw I guy do it in an air show.
Gonky on CW Lemoine's channels talked about splitting the throttles in the F18 and Mover went "Really?!?"
To paraphrase he said it's basically like adding a second rudder to the Hornet but if you took it to idle it was too much, you had to back it out JUST the right amount but it could be very effective.
It's definitely doable but the Tomcat can enter a flat spin because of the way the engines are mounted. The F-18 won't flat spin the same way.
TL;DR its a very precise maneuver and only for very experienced pilots but it is possible and can be effective.
I'd like to imagine that Maverick was able to do this because he spent a crap load of time in a simulator, if not in a real F-14 before they got retired, doing this exact maneuver. He mastered how to get an F-14 into a flat spin with a split throttle and then recovering from it because he was still traumatized by Goose's death from the flat spin in the first movie.
The actual reason is just that the guy in the "Reality" part was just dumb, he was going way to fast to pull that maneuver, it's definitely possible, Maverick did it at low speeds, this guy did it going as fast as he could.
maverick was not a real character....he wasn't doing things offscreen that we weren't privy to. Because he's not real. He's just a movie character. Right?

It has been some time since the 90s when I read a book on the F-14. If I recall right, a flat spin like in the movie was unrecoverable because a) the spin itself would cause a flameout in the spinward engine, which had already happened in the movie thanks to the jetwash, anyway, and b) the F-14 has no ailerons to attempt to disrupt the airflow across the wings which in turn stalled the airflow across the ailerators on the tail, robbing them of banking authority.
@@alexanderbohm607 you do realize half of the movie was filmed with Tom Cruise actually flying an f14 right? He may not have done this maneuver but they consulted professionals to put this film together and it’s definitely possible, you just need a lot of experience.

DCS is close enough to reality without using JP-8. We have several pilots IRL who've flown in the sim and complimented the flight model, and apparently the sim is used by a few countries as a pre-trainer before actual flight lessons.
So yeah, there is a bit of truth to that "DCS is reality" statement.
Does DCS have simulated wind and turbulence physics? You’d figure splitting the throttle with actual wind resistance would be possible??? The ‘game’ is cool but has an extremely long way before it even comes close to reality. I laugh when people judge fighter abilities based on a game. They should throw an X-wing into DCS and see if it can pull the cobra maneuver 😂😂😂.

When a senior top gun instructor in real life goes on Jockos podcast and basically says Maverick is spot on and you find out he’s the one that made sure they put “it’s not the plane it’s the pilot”. Cause even he was like “the technology will help but it doesn’t mean you’ll win” in a scenario where you’re fighting a newer generation air craft.
I always found "it's not the plane it's the pilot" to be a bullshit mindset when combating 5th gen fighters. The whole nature of 5th gen fighters removed skill as much as possible from the equation. When F-15, F-15, and F-18 went up against the F-22 in the Red Flag exercise, they wouldn't even know what hit them. They would just be flying around and then they'd "go and land at the next possible opportunity, you're dead" because the F-22's next gen RADAR, missiles and stealth system allowed them to kill the pilot before they could even do anything.
If a 5th gen fighter like the SU-57 ends up in a conventional dogfight with an F-14 or F-18, then there have already been numerous catastrophic failures from both the pilot and their support team and even still the SU-57 would have a much better targeting system than its opponent, so its really not a favourable matchup. If Maverick was flying an F-22, not only would the dogfight even be "possible" in the first place, it would be an interesting match.

@@kxngmars6527 Just because some guy is clinging to his own outdated ideals of air warfare does not make him right. All it takes to prove that dogfighting is a thing of the past is simply the fact that true fifth generation fighters (f-22, f-35) are SLOWER and LESS manuverable than their older brothers. They are designed from the ground up to be extrodinarily stealthy, be able to kill from far out of human range of vision, and go home. The whole idea is to kill the enemy before they can even detect you.

In this case, the pilot IS the deciding factor.
Actually watched a DCS testing this theory and he says dont shut off the second engine, just reduce it to low, he made good use of this trick, but it does take practice.
Only Maverick knows how to do that the right way.

“Splitting the throttles” aka differential thrust is a real thing. It’s not am advisable maneuver but it’s legal and it has worked. You likely went into a spin because of your higher speed or there was something a bit uncommanded like too much yaw or maybe some stick pressure

i love how the last fight in top gun maverick when maverick is doing the maneuvers the enemy is just sitting there with his aircraft doing nothing and pretty much letting mav get on his tail
When the original top gun came out, some of the pilots at the airline I worked for talked about the flat spin scene and that the way to recover was adding power to the inboard engine. In theory, splitting the throttles. would induce a flat spin, which is kind of what Maverick was trying to do. Definitely takes a lot of skill and timing to pull it off and it could quickly go wrong.
Makes sense, the port side/ left/ interior engine malfunction is what caused the flat spin the first time so a perfect counter thrust ought to fix it. Or tear the craft in two...

What is the Navy's flat spin recovery procedure for the F-14? Is it rudder? Throttle? Stick? Combination? Or just eject? In the movie, G forces pin LT Mitchell forward toward the nose. But LTJG Bradshaw is able to reach backward over his head to pull the ejection handles? Wouldn't Bradshaw be pinned forward as well as the equilibrium point of the aircraft was aft of both pilots?
While not it's an F-14, I've seen IRL vids of F-15 pilots executing differential thrust. It's a valid way to start a maneuver. In theory, the F-14 being a twin engine fighter, in regards to airframe tolerances, can do it as well if a another similar generation fighter can.
I think the real issue is the F-14 has around 10 ft of separation between the engines
@@starliner2498 That is not an "issue" it is actually a blessing to perform this. Too close like the F/A-18 or F-15 it actually don't help a lot.
F-14A's problem was those garbage TF30 engines. I am surprised why no one in P&W ever got jailed for selling such garbage to the Navy.
F-14 was also very hard to fly by today's fighter jet standards due to no fly-by-wire and unique taileron design.
Well they were really intended for the F-111, they worked okay in that aircraft didn’t they? Different kind of flying.
That's because an F-15 has the engines really close to the center, so there's almost no torque applied and whatever is applied can be countered with rudder, but F-14's engines are a lot further apart, so it produces a lot more torque.
The F-14 and the F-15 are about as similar as apples and tomatoes. The former has a huge space between the engines while the F-15 has them side by side. The problem with the F-14 is that it's already susceptible to compressor stall in certain throttle settings under high yaw situations.

It depended on WHICH version of the F-14 you tried that in. It WAS a real side effect to spin recovery techniques taught to crew, and things to watch out for to avoid getting into the spin in the first place. The TF30 powered F-14A had a known issue for compressor stalls. The later B and D variants which had the F110 engine from GE eliminated that problem but only about 75 new builds and 61 conversions from F-14As were produced with the better engine vs 479 As originally built for the USN. Over 160 of the total US Navy F-14 production have been destroyed in accidents though so it really was not a good track record for safety for a jet of that era, relative to the numbers produced.
The maneuver known as the Cobra actually was invented by the Swedish Air Force as a form of post-stall maneuvering taught to pilots of the Saab J35 Draken (and who in turn taught to the Austria and Finnish air force who also operated the draken... a particular russian pilot stole the maneuver from having seen it used against him by Draken pilots, and he then practiced it and performed it at a western airshow in the mid 80s and got it named after him). It was meant to quickly recover from the stall before it got to the spin stage. There's video of the Draken Cobra on youtube actually performed in flight (shot by a handheld video camera from another Draken). The video ALSO includes the thing the enemy plane does in the movie (the cobra with the rotation) again...swedish pilots developed the technique, the soviets stole the ideas from them.

I worked for Grumman Aerospace for 12 years building all versions from the A's to the D models and all prototypes. Every model Tomcat was dangerous to recover from a flat spin. Evan chief test pilot Chuck Sewell hated to put a Tomcat into a flat spin during testing flights over Long Island before handing over the aircraft to the Navy. Accidents were generally caused by pilots flying outside the aircraft's limits. No plane likes a "Hot Dog " pilot at it's controls Chuck told me one day.

Aircraft development took less time back then because they tended to try and cram fewer bleeding edge technologies into them than the pipe dream weapon programs of the 90s (which is why the F-35 still hasn't finished development work more than 25 years after the JSF fly-off between the X-32 and X-35). The Radar and primarily long range missile system sprang from earlier work for the YF-12A before evolving into what was used on the F-111B, the engines were also reused from the F-111B though it was always intended to replace them with a better engine as soon as one were available, the airframe design derived from Grumman's internal model 303 which had been one of several that sprang from a contract the Navy gave grumman to study advanced fighter concepts in 1966. Its size was dictated by the need to carry the AWG-9 radar and six AIM-54 Phoenix missiles as well as an internal 20mm M61A cannon, and have the range/loiter time for the fleet defence role. It was smaller than the F-111B but more maneuverable than an F-4 in the dogfights that experience over Vietnam had taught the navy already (USN/USMC Phantoms all lacked an internal gun for example). The F-111B was canceled in '68, the first F-14 flight was in 1970 and initial entry into fleet squadrons began in 1974.

None of that makes any sense. The cobra maneuver isn't possible without vectored thrust, and the F22 was the first combat fighter with vectored thrust capable of making the maneuver.

Thing is, differential thrust has experimentally been proven to work in the F-14. Although, it can only be attempted by those who have completely mastered the Tomcat, and Maverick has.

@@jdsull no goose died due to an ejection seat issue that the tomcat actually had. as for the reason they were in a flat spin it was due to an engine air intake issue that in certain circumstances would kill the engines again another issue the tomcat actually had.. at least early variants

If you're trying it with the A model then yes this is what you'll end up with. The TF-30 from Pratt and Whitney was actually a bomber engine and not designed to operate in non-uniform airflow environment. With the B model this maneuver can be pulled off but you shouldn't retract the throttle all the way. Just take one out of burner and use the rudder.

14 with split throttle in dcs is amazing. great for forcing a roll, rolling scissor, or preventing inverse roll from pulling too hard. you have to be gentle with it though and only drop to mil power on the oposite engine

Differential thrust is a real maneuver that its application differs from airframe to airframe. Altho I don’t think a total idle on the left and full aft on right would work for F14, it is possible if the differential is small and controlled with care.

Added context in the description. The F-14 was not real in the movie - it was CGI. There are no working F-14s in North America.

Ward Carroll (RUclipsr and F-14 RIO) had a good discussion of this, too, and used DCS to demonstrate. In the Tomcat, splitting the throttles at induces very little yawing moment, at least compared to the rolling moment caused by full left stick deflection, as Maverick used in the movie. I can't say that Ward fully explained it, but in his DCS demo, the Tomcat just rolled and didn't yaw at all.

Ok, I'll admit that happened the 1st time I tried it in DCS.
Ok, initial setup, Asymmetric Thrust limiter OFF,
Split Throttle, Assume you are going left.
Right Throttle full AB, left throttle idle (nose yaw's left) Stick full left, rudder full left (plane snap rolls left to inverted, nose is pointed down hill), Rudder neutral, left throttle to full mil, (roll continues) Stick Center, rudder right to stop roll with bandit on top of your canopy, Throttle to full AB, using rudder to roll, pull nose up to bring the bandit to the canopy bow.
It takes practice but that's one way to use it.

I feel like this would have been a little better if it included a short snippet from in the cockpit with all the alarms going off. The stall warning, compressor stall alarm, RWR going mental, all the trees and scenery just going around in circles.

What he did was before splitting, he went full right roll to counteract the flipping that you experienced, it may also have been a nod to the original movie where a flareout such as this causes a similar flat spin to what you experienced
I don't think he was zone 5 full blowers and supersonic in the movie when he did it either, he was practically in a stall. 🤷♂ This guy was stabbing as fast as he could while chewing 5 gum.
That simply enhances horizontal stability. At low speed you would simply go into a flatspin quicker.
His maneuvers are actually possible. F14s are like hot rods. You have to have a precise feel for the aircraft the same way a good driver can feel the car 👍

@@SogenOkami It had a hydrolic control system. Not a computer controlled fly by wire system. The pilot had to have real touch to make it work.

i feel like your climb wasn't as steep as maverick's which is why you went into death spin maybe try flying at more of an angle for your next video and see if you can replicate it

Growling Sidewinder showed that it works, but is very twitchy and prone to flat spinning.

This is funny because various DCS players have tested the 'Splitting the Throttles' on an F-14 and have found it does help slightly when you are above the target and need to get a bead on the target fast. They didn't lose control or have issues when they tried it so I wonder if you just did it for too long or what. Also to be fair there are Real Life F-18 Pilots who find DCS strange and difficult to fly in.......

Thanks for asking about this. I wish I had a more definitive answer, but I don't recall Tomcat pilots using split throttles in engagements. I joined the fleet in 1981 and the Tomcat community had realized that the jet had a dangerous flat spin mode. Early in its career, they thought the Tomcat wouldn't spin! My point is that by the time I joined, pilots were more careful. In the early days they used to do things like depart the aircraft as a last-ditch guns defense!
Even with the more stable 110 engines, I don't think pilots of the B or D models would use split throttles.
But I thought it was a very clever tactic for the movie!
