- I show you how to drill out your old lock cylinder when you have lost the key. I go through the steps I used buy going to larger drill bits and making sure I don't go too deep. I give you some tips on using this drill it all to hell method without ruining the main ignition switch. No guarantee this will work but it should if you are careful. Please subscribe to my channel so youtube will be happy.
Just what I was looking for !
Worked. Great video. I could get mine to turn to ACC position with a screwdriver once I removed the keyway pin. Took some time pulling it out, but suddenly it slid out like butter and new one went in easy. Thanks.
Awesome video ! Thanks.
This ignition like any other GM ignition has a sidebar. You don’t drill the key hole. You need to drill the sidebar that located at 7 o’clock. It’ll take you 5 sec to drill it and another 2 sec to turn the ignition counter clockwise and push in the hole to remove it.
Looks a lot like nine o clock on mine, 845 at the earliest
In the video the hole is at 3 lmao what do you even mean “located and 7 o’clock 😆”
Once I knew there was a side bar, I located it and got mine out too.
@@chevyc1089i know that the hole is at 3 o’clock. I can see it.
As i mentioned, you need to drill the SIDEBAR that is located at 7 o’clock 😅
Great job buddy
Thanks 👍
Thanks man. I need to do the same to my 1964 Impala. Lost the keys 😩 and can't take it out of the dash without it. Wish me luck!
I think it will work. Worse case you have to replace the entire ignition switch.
Thanks perfect instructions done in 15 minutes. Changed 71 ignition. Follow his instructions you'll be crusin.
Yeah this was the first time I tried this but if I did another it could be done pretty easy.
did this, small bit and went up 1 size untill it came out, about 5 or 6 bits, just tried turning after every bit, literally 5 minutes, i have years of experience but good vid, just be careful and dont rush, and pop the decorative cover off 1st
Yeah I think if you did this a few times you could get fast and also do a better job.
I was drilling like you are same scenario, but my truck started up and I couldn’t shut it off!!! 😂
Ok that is funny. I guess un hook the battery for future reference?
Thanks a lot dude.. Lots of help!
Gotta try this on my 1980 Chrysler New Yorker
Beautiful. I've been waiting 2 weeks for the locksmith to pick the lock on mine. I have the new cylinder, I'm going to get it back from him and start drilling.
Let me know how it goes - just take out a little at a time. Worst case you buy a new ignition switch all as one piece if you really mess up.
Ross Johnson he fixed the lock, but the switch fell apart! 53 year old petrified plastic. Replaced it with a Chevy switch. Works just fine. Git R Dunn!
Thank you. Because of your video I finally fixed our trucks ignition. Thank you!!!
Cool - glad it helped!
you call that fixed? lol
Watching this sitting here with my drill in my hand 😈
Thank you.
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks!
Alot easier to call a locksmith too
I'm going do this Toyota sequoia 2003. Had to go buy a drill the guy did have one
Sick c10
Just a stocker with the normal rust on these things. I keep talking myself out of putting an LS motor in it.
Nicholas cage (master mind thief) is laughing 😆
From recent experience is better to install a new switch and lock cylinder. Unscrew the disk around the keyway and unplug the wires. I had used an old switch I had and a new cylinder.
the ring (disk) around the keyway isn't supposed to come off with the diameter of the cylinder plug installed ... unless its really worn or the wrong parts installed, it won't come off.
Thanks bud
No problem 👍
See the 3 notches on the main circle of the key ignition turn those and it all comes right out to next time you do it too
That removes the entire switch assembly with the lock cylinder intact. If you do it that way, you have to replace both the switch and the lock cylinder.
No it doesn’t
Worked for me but my parts came from another truck and may have been botched up a bit. I had no problem until the end unscrewing the bezel but a little force and it was out.
Whay size drill piece for an ignition barrel do u use
Do you have to do the same with the doors?
No I have not had to try and get one out that is locked. If you lost the keys then just get new cylinders with keys which are cheap and then take off the door panel and change them. It is pretty easy to do.
Take the door panel off. There's a clip that holds the lock in. If it and the awitch is original, you can get the number off the door lock and get a new key cut for your switch.
I would protect the outside area....how long did it took u?? Good job...
Hmm - Maybe 20 minutes or so? Went slow because did not know if it would work and when you film crap it takes extra time to setup the cam and that mess.
68 is the same gen so wouldnt this work 68-72
I lost my keys once, did this. 2min later I was driving
Judging by the bullet hole in the back window you sure that was your truck?
Funny - the guy I bought the truck from his own kid fessed up to shooting it when he was younger.
Y did you only paint one nail
Yeah it is what all the cool kids are doing now. It is easy just smash your finger in a metal object and you too can have one. : )
Looks like you hit the wrong nail!
It's the same for a 66 impala?
Not sure - knowing GM I would say it may work the same. You maybe could drill it out but you should see if they sell the individual parts or the entire switch to change out first.
you are not the savviest tool man
Agreed. : )
that dont look as easy as replacing the whole thing, you tube can sure mislead people.
It is more if you want to spend $60 - 80 for an entire switch or $10-15 for insert. Not sure but you may have to get the lock cyl. out anyway to get the collar off on the entire switch. I would say this is easy now that I have done it. i think maybe 10 minutes I could do another one.
Heydave420 if you don’t have a key you can’t remove the cylinder. If you can’t remove the cylinder you can’t remove the bezel. If you can’t remove the bezel you can’t remove the whole ignition....... if you have anything constructive to add that would help a guy out in this situation by all means let’s hear it. Otherwise get off RUclips if it’s misleading you so bad!
Isn’t the little pin hole beside the key slot for removing it? Instead of butchering it?
Scotty yes if you have a key that turns
So I googled Door lock cylinder removal and this came up in google images. After seeing the thumbnail I had to click it. WOW!!!! The fact you actually did this is one thing... but why on earth would you tell anyone you did, let alone make a video with your face on it. Should have went with the approach you did when you picked out your RUclips user image... this approach is extremely sloppy and risks damaging the housing (switch). This kind of work is why specialized trades like mechanics, locksmiths, etc. say... "labor rate $75 hr, $120 if you watch, $140 if you help, and $200hr if you worked on it first." geez... and why does everyone seem to think a drill bit down the middle of the key hole is a good idea, yeah a good idea if you wanna break a drill bit! lol ...Did you see the switch after he got it out and was putting the new one in? wtf? At that point just replace the switch cuz you mangled the old one. Glad it's not my car or my reputation at stake here. I guess it's better you show all the ppl looking up this video how to replace it with no key, aka theives, cheapskates, etc. Do it yourselfers like you who know just enough to get themselves into trouble. On to the next job shaggy... cuz that was janky.
Sigh......I did this as a test and really did not care if it "janked" it up to be honest. I had a brand new ignition assembly in the box ready to go. Which is the right fix but if you want to go the cheap or fast route then this did work and is still working years later if you are wondering. So who cares you scrape some things up because the tolerances are not that tight on this part. I could not find many (read none) videos on replacing this WITHOUT the key.
This is exactly how a pro would have done it. The lock cylinder has to be removed before you can remove the rest of the switch. If you don't have the key or the cylinder is busted, you drill it out. Dude might not have the best technique, but the process was right and it worked.
@@BrentFriar right on man....well said.
He’s just angry because he’s a locksmith
🤣 you mad 🤣🤣🤣🤣 A thief would probably just bust the whole dash as stupid as many of them are.
