  • HOW DO YOU INCREASE THE POWER OF ANY SBC WITH BOLT ONS? CAN YOU ADD POWER TO YOUR 305, 327 OR 350 SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WITH PERFORMANCE HEADS, CAMS AND INTAKES (CARB AND HEADERS TOO)? SURE, EVERY SBC RESPONDS TO IMPROVEMENTS IN FLOW FROM BASIC BOLTS, AND HERE ARE THREE PERFECT EXAMPLES OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ADD BOLTS TO YOUR SMALL BLOCK. THE GREAT THING ABOUT SMALL BLOCK PERFORMANCE IS THAT THERE IS SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM, AND COMPONENTS TO FIT EVERY POWER NEED AND BUDGET. FULL DYNO RESULTS AS ALWAYS!

I would still REALLY like to see someone take a 110 HP Olds 260 and do some custom work to it just to see how much it can make. I had one in my 76 Skylark sedan and it only had 34k miles on it with a Rochester 2bbl and even when it was in the negatives with a foot of snow on the car, you'd pump the gas twice, turn the key, and it would fire up on the 2nd rotation. That was one of my most reliable cars that I've ever owned and it was given to me. I could get it up to 80 on the Turnpike and it would just cruise. It took a while to get to 80, but it'd do it. It also had ice cold air conditioning and it would heat you out in the winter.

I will be 66 in December and when i was barely 16 someone a few streets over got a 64 Chevelle and he dropped in a nice 327/365 then put on headers and a Torker with a 780, back then AL heads werent even a dream except i think the L-88? That little 327 would run strong and yes rev high and he had 411 gears so i think it would have been in the 13's? You're 327 modern upgrades added an extra 100 hp so that will definitely be felt and seen in times and MPH. I had a 67 Camaro and dropped in a 427/425 so your little 327 bested that easily.
Richard, do you remember Chevy used to sell late 60's/early 70's what they called ANGLE PLUG HEADS? Supposedly the idea was to use with at least 11 to 1 comp. or more and helped with flame travel over such huge piston domes? Do you know if they ever worked better that the straight plug 202's?

Somebody told me long ago....an engine doesn't know what size it it, what parts it has inside, what brand or color it is, what planet it's on, what the brochure says it should do, what car it's going into, or what kind of fuel it's ingesting or if a power adder is connected. It does know at this exact moment I can do this with that. More fuel = more power, if the airflow is better, more power, if the exhaust is better more power, if ignition can ignite the fuel at that moment in time, it will continue to run near peak potential ect. That somebody was Jim Kinsler, Kinsler Fuel Injection, Troy Michigan 1983. A very interesting and smart guy for sure.

I guess it's the no brains syndrome these later generations past the 60's have. Everything is easy for everyone. It's called 1-800-send me one.
But it won't change ever. The difference really, what you're made of. No effort, or be a thinking man. A real challenge is out running them. A lot of work but that's the way the old guys did everything. It was really fun to be successful with using your brain.

The 305 obviously cant fit the valves of a 4" bore. But if we compare power in terms of bore area and torque in terms of displacement its probably adequate for the era and when built for power would be respectable. Other than tbi heads the flow for valve area isnt that bad and the stock 302 heads werent always that good. The 305 might not be the brute force engine of choice but its not an inefficient engine and the heads are perfectly suited for 283 and 307 leftovers from the 1960's that could use compression and have a little less shrouding on the bores.

Lol I’d say the worst gen 1 small block they ever made was a 307. the one with the bore of a 283 and the stroke of a 327. & they came with giant chambered heads. they just were dogs really. I’m not sure how they’d be if you actually put a good set of heads on them or a good intake manifold. nobody really builds them partly because they’re actually hard to find. I don’t even think they sell pistons for them anymore. so if they have one & it needs rebuilt. they better pray that the pistons they have are still good

2nd worst. The worst was the 267 that came in the Monza.

I like the power the 350 made. What octane fuel did you use and what was the compression ratio?

    305 it's basically a throw away engine.
Or, if you want to look at the half full version . . .
Something that won't blow up no matter how hard you mistreat it, it doesn't have the power to hurt itself.
If you're going to bother yourself with a small block Chevy then make it a short stroke, rev happy 302 or a hi-po 350 and up (383, 406, blah, blah, blah).

God I'd die for a streetable 302 sbc, but then I'd baby her most, most of the time.

I would love this exact series but with forged bottom end . Unless it doesn’t do much to the numbers

What about the Chevy or 283,302! The 305 or 307 seem to be emission engines!
