I had the M340ix and it was the best car I had! Since then I moved to the X3M. The B58 in the M340ix is legendary and the tuning is fantastic. They made the B58 so good that they had to come out with the S58 in the M3/M4. The handling is so good. The M340ix puts to shame most of the cars out there. The price is also solid. The Kia Stinger couldn’t keep up with this car due to a better engine and of course the ZF transmission. This is why the stinger is being discontinued and the M340ix is still out there and still selling.
They were already going to make the s58 you tool. N55 -> s55 b58 -> s58 They always do that & please don’t say they didn’t do that with the e9x gen bcuz that was a one off occasion. Look at all //M cars and they’re non M counterparts. (Not just 3 series)
The Stinger is being discontinued because it can't hang with the M340i? Where did you get that info? That's not at all true. It's being discontinued because it didn't sell well enough. What a great review! I loved how it was drive centric, rather than the standard droning format from most auto review channels. I've owned a TLX in the past, currently have an Audi A5, and am now considering either an M340ix or a 540ix. Interesting that you note, that the size of the TLX is similar to the 5 series. I now wonder how the 5'er would handle in comparison to the TLX. Subscribed!
Much appreciated! I think the 5 series would feel a bit heavier than the already heavy m340. If you don’t need the extra 2 inches of rear seat space id go for the m340.
The M340i is levels above the Type S and it's not even close especially in straight line performance, the Acura is also heavier, doesn't get as good as gas mileage in real life. Interior is probably about the same, but you get more from the BMW especially with the aftermarket support, the Acura can't even get a legitimate tune yet....
Super interesting comparison. I think the only real knock on the M340i is the higher cost and more expensive maintenance, but you're also paying for the status and name of a German luxury car.
What other improvements? It doesn't sound like they did any improvements to performance. Mainly some cosmetic changes. Would have been nice to see another 30-45 HP added to compete with things like the M340i. Especially since it's such a pig. Could really use some extra power.
@greg5143 The refresh was mostly quality of life changes that people have been asking for. The digital gauge, HUD, larger infotainment screen, 360 camera, wireless car play, rear USB ports, better looking front grill, new rims, acoustic glass, and other little improvements are now standard. Yeah, they didn't increase the power when they really should. But everything else seems like a win to me.
In my younger years I would get this pseudo M series where I don't know how to value my money and keep on spending on a lot of SSS on maintenance/repairs. As I get older and wiser, Honda/Acura cars always make a lot of sense.
As someone who has owned both..!! M340i ALL the way. I'll give credit to Acura on the interior build quality an edge over BMW but man let me tell you. The TLX Type S MPG is horrendous. It doesn't get what it's advertised, it's heavy as hell so the power goes nowhere. Definitely not an enthusiast car, and the B58 is killer + bulletproof reliability. Otherwise Toyota wouldn't risk their reputation with it in the Supra. M340i all the way! This is coming from someone who has owned multiple Hondas and Acura.
Son enfoques diferentes, BMW te da un logotipo, Acura te da buenos acabados y buenos ensambles en los interiores. BMW te da más potencia, Acura te da un mejor servicio post venta.
I don’t disagree with your statement regarding the M340i but one thing I do notice is beemer owners are happy asf to finally be able to claim “RELIABLE”
I will make this easy for everyone get the m340. Coming from a TLX TYPE S the car is heavier, less tunable, slow to pass on the highway compared to m340x, horrible turning radius, worse MPG (15mpg city lol) , apple carplay connects 6 out of 10 times, resale sucks after owning it for one year, slower to take off, slower to shift, Redline is like the shortest i have ever seen in a car lol. The ones that are able to tune the TLX Type S (2021-2022) owners only supposedly are having issues with the trans with a mild OTS tune. Those 10k extra are sooo worth it you’ll make up for it in gas mileage and smiles. Plus the m340 got more tech or better than TYPE S. The TLX is a huge heavy car with no surprisingly little leg room for rear passengers lol. THE M340 is a 4 door AWD supra!
This review is pretty spot on. I owned a 2023 TLX type s for 3 weeks unfortunately it was stolen. God works in mysterious ways cause my first choice was to get a 2023 m340i but I ended up getting a 24 m340i in Brooklyn grey in October with m performance exhaust. The comparison between the both of them is night and day. Owning a bmw the drive is just different In all aspects. Technology, drivetrain & engine. Loving my 340i best decision I made.
BMW is a car you lease. You don't eat the horrible depreciation, and don't have to worry about issues out of warranty. OR you can wait for someone else to eat the depreciation, and buy a 3 yr old example for 60% the price of a new one as a CPO. extended warranty on top for reassurance and you're good to go. I would trust the Acura more if you're buying new to maintain value as well as have wayyyyyy less and cheaper issues

The Review is great... TLX is over hyped and over priced for what it is. I rather take the S5 or The M340i for the features and price. If it's fun and driving dynamics, TLX is far behind it's game. Acura needs to do better, like they did with CTR and Integra Type S. That TLX is missing the extra Turbo, that thing probably would do 400 if not 450 with TWIN TURBO. With out it it just another car on the road with fancy badge.
Spec a 330i xDrive with the same features that are standard on the Type S. The 330i is actually closer in price to the TLX Type S than an equally-equipped M340i.

Performance wise it is no competition, BMW all the way. The only reason I see someone choosing a TLX is because it is cheaper or they like the styling for some reason.
Yet somehow, the TLX Type S tied the M340i's lap time at MotorTrend. Let that sink in. The Bimmer has more horsepower and weighs less, but still couldn't beat the TLX's track time. That tells me the Acura's SH-AWD can manhandle Germany's best.
@@terrencemcphail5782 can't post external links on YT comments. But look up MotorTrend's review. Both the Acura and M340i lap time was 25.0 seconds. And here's their blurb on it... Not bad for something that's down on power to the Bimmer and much heavier than either German."

I own the TLX Type S and I agree with you on most everything you said except the stereo. The ELS system is hands down better than the HK in the BMW and I have owned both! The Panasonic is one of the best stereos you can get in any car under a $100k. I like the way the Acura looks better and as you said, it is a great highway car with very capable sports sedan performance. I was trading in a Honda Accord so the dealer gave me great deal on the Acura. I would have paid significantly more for a BMW plus I wanted something that was different and there are not that many Type S cars on the road. I am really happy with it overall and just would say it would be almost perfect if it were 200 lbs. lighter and had like 50 more hp.
@@rahimi4762 Not true. As someone who has worked on the service side for both brands, Honda's and BMW's both make GREAT engines. BMW's are higher maintenance because they're higher performance tuned. Acura's just use better tuned versions of their original counterparts. That's not a knock, but the only true performance Honda engine built was the V8 Indycar motors. But when you get down to it, they both require the same amount of maintenance, and they both have the same failures. People who still have the old school way of thinking where you just need an oil change are dead wrong but truth be told, if you can't afford or are unwilling to pay for the highly recommended work OUTSIDE of just an oil change, then you cannot afford the car. I've seen both brands have issues at 10k, and both be in very good condition at 100K+. The difference is how well you maintain it.
Yes, Honda's sound system is good. But HK is almost universally considered one of the standard bearers of high quality sound with B&O and B&W being the ultimate audiophiles wet dream. ELS does have better lows, but H&K has better mids - so if you're into the big bass, yes, ELS is the better choice, but H&K has better clarity so it's all about preference at that point. With that said, at least in my neck of the woods, there are about 5 TLX Type S's to 1 M340, and not based on popularity but availability, so it may differ by state/region. As for pricing, you get what you pay for, and having serviced both, driven both, and having chosen another car with the B58 motor in it, I feel the price difference is much deserved, but as is everything else in life, it comes down to preference and budget
@@iamgiocasino Literally. It’s a nice car, but for the price (MSRP) you can get a new 340i for almost the same. Plus the B58 has proven to be a solid engine so far.

On the highway it would gwt 22mog but the tank seems small seems like I was alwqys at the pump. So when it got totalled in an accident when I got rear ended I decided not to go buy another one.
Both the M340i and TLX Type S are beautiful cars. The M340i sounds aggressive. The Type S though would be better in the long run. Lower maintenance cost. Honda reliability. Lower insurance cost.
The TLX is a big car in the outside but with smaller dimensions in the inside. Some compacts have better leg room numbers. A car that doesn’t make sense. Sincerely an Honda/Acura fan and owner.
Agreed, the 21+ TLX cabin space is pretty much the same as the 15-20 version but has an upsized exterior. That said, drivescene is correct re: RDX alternative, provided you dont need Type S power. Granted, a Ktuner w/Phearable stage 3 tune for $700 will bring the RDX/TLX 2.0 to Type S levels without sacrificing reliability.
@@MidnightAspec well said. A perfect RDX would be a Type S with the turbo v6, I don’t know why Acura is holding out. That would arguably be the best Type S in the lineup.
I would love to get the BMW but is it going to be reliable that’s the real question I heard the B58 engine is pretty reliable but can anyone confirm that ?
The BMW probably is actually more reliable in the early years, but there's reason to believe the car other than the drivetrain will be costlier both to maintain and to fix as it ages. Parts availability will be more of an issue for the German car as well.
M340i no contest. Looks, performance and features. Not to mention the bmw comes with a lot of extra power on the table in stock form. Buy a JB4 tuner and get 50+ wheel on pump gas STOCK. $200 downpipe and a tune gets you over 100 extra wheel HP. For those that don't already know, BMW factory hp rating is damn near on point with wheel hp. M340i makes 20hp less than crank at the wheels. No brainer here.
Looks are subjective. The TLX Type S has quad-exhaust, and sits lower and wider than an M3, let alone an M340i. In terms of features, an M340i when optioned with all the features that are standard on the Acura, is $10k more expensive. And in terms of performance, the bimmer is quicker in a straight line, but the Acura somehow tied its track time at MotorTrend, which tells me the Acura is a superb handler.
sits lower? You must be talking about the distance between the front lip and the pavement. If we’re talking wheel gap, the tlx has the same wheel gap as my wife’s Pathfinder.
@@gogz1981 oops I looked it up and the M3, TLX Type S, and M340i are all the same height: 56.4". I’ve had both ,have to disagree on the ride ,20 inch rims on the Acura found to be worse ride. My m340 xdrive rides much smoother with Michelin NRF ,and adaptive suspension .
The tlx is tight, with the baby car seat especially when rear facing is even worse. I talk about rear seat space in my yearly and new car review of my tlx if you wanna check it out.
Acura chose to give this car a longer "prestige gap" (the space between the front wheels and the front door) to emulate the styling of costlier, better-balanced rivals whose engine is mounted aft of the front wheels. That decision forced them to chop length out of the rear seat space to hold down the overall length of the car; it's bad back there compared to the Accord or even the Civic/Integra.
340 is a rocket and in my opinion the best daily out there. It handles well. Just don’t like the price but way better handling than any ev. Ev’s suck. It’s cold in Calgary!
The M340i is worth every penny it costs over the Type S. Much more premium + great fuel economy to boot...how do they do that? You didn't mention that the M340i easily overachieves it's highway MPG rating. Even the F30 335i that I used to have would regularly see 36-37MPG's on the freeway (it was rated at 33), and the M340i does just as well (see C&D's 75MPH highway fuel economy test) which is somewhat of a marvel in and of itself in a car that can sprint to 60 in
I do think the Type S looks sharper and better at almost every angle. Also, I think the Acura will hold up better in 10 years in terms of build quality. I’m afraid the bmw at the same time will become sticky and smell like a box of crayons unfortunately. I do like how the bmw is faster (type s is a let down in performance) and more fuel efficient.
@@dominicjeanb2063 BMW interiors hold up well if they are not used as a gym locker or parked outside indefinitely, as many of them are, being driven by people who don't own a home, hence no garage to park in (and really can't afford them) but want to look rich. Also, 24 MPG hwy is really bad these days. Pretty sure all modern V8 coupes and sedans do better than that.
There is absolutely NOTHING better about the TYPE S. The only decent thing about the Type S is that it will have a much, much better resale value in the long run. Otherwise, those cars are on two totally different levels. My standard 440i will run circles about the Type S. Heck! Even my wife 540i will walk that in every category. B58 cannot be matched by any Honda motor. Nevertheless, great review.
The Type-S will have better resale because they don't depreciate so insanely badly like all Euros do. The Type-S is also vastly less expensive to maintain. I agree entirely that these are in two different classes.

Im guessing you like the X3M more or do you miss the M340?
They were already going to make the s58 you tool.
N55 -> s55 b58 -> s58
They always do that & please don’t say they didn’t do that with the e9x gen bcuz that was a one off occasion.
Look at all //M cars and they’re non M counterparts. (Not just 3 series)
The Stinger is being discontinued because it can't hang with the M340i? Where did you get that info? That's not at all true. It's being discontinued because it didn't sell well enough. I guess by your logic, every competitor to the M340i should be discontinued since none of them can keep up. Goodbye S4/S5, C43, G70... etc. You can't keep up so nobody wants you.

No contest here. The M340i is too far ahead of the competition
The actual 2024 TLX Type S has a digital gauge cluster and HUD. It also has a lot of other improvements from the previous model year.
That is good news. They got the MDX Type S right so it's about time the TLX Type S got the ugprades it needed.
In my younger years I would get this pseudo M series where I don't know how to value my money and keep on spending on a lot of SSS on maintenance/repairs. As I get older and wiser, Honda/Acura cars always make a lot of sense.
Bmw is on another level
As someone who has owned both..!! M340i ALL the way. I'll give credit to Acura on the interior build quality an edge over BMW but man let me tell you. The TLX Type S MPG is horrendous. It doesn't get what it's advertised, it's heavy as hell so the power goes nowhere. Definitely not an enthusiast car, and the B58 is killer + bulletproof reliability. Otherwise Toyota wouldn't risk their reputation with it in the Supra. M340i all the way! This is coming from someone who has owned multiple Hondas and Acura.

OR you can wait for someone else to eat the depreciation, and buy a 3 yr old example for 60% the price of a new one as a CPO. extended warranty on top for reassurance and you're good to go.
Overpriced? The TLX Type S is the same price as a 330i Xdrive. Not the 340i.
Spec a 330i xDrive with the same features that are standard on the Type S. The 330i is actually closer in price to the TLX Type S than an equally-equipped M340i.

Yet somehow, the TLX Type S tied the M340i's lap time at MotorTrend.

It will last longer, better built, less plastic

The big question..Who will leak engine oil and coolant fluid after 35k miles? BMW 340i or Acura TLX 😅
Neither, probably. This particular BMW "B58" engine has built a really good reliability reputation.

It's the car of choice for bro's. I realize I hated on Acura pretty hard and I don't mean to offend, I'm just disappointed in what they have been producing as of late. I wanted to fall in love with the Type S as I was very disenchanted with my 2018 Q50RS and the Acura was on my short list (as was the S4/S5 and M340i), but when Type S came out, my initial excitement quickly faded once I saw them in person...especially considering the unrealized promise of performance made by the four rather large exhaust tips. Also, 24 MPG hwy is really bad these days. Pretty sure all modern V8 coupes and sedans do better than that.
There is a reason Toyota chose the B58. Enough said.
The Type-S will have better resale because they don't depreciate so insanely badly like all Euros do. The Type-S is also vastly less expensive to maintain. I agree entirely that these are in two different classes.
The only thing “better” about the type S is reliability thats it lol

Next time pls compare the Beamer to the other Germans , that would be a fair comparison. The Japanese dnt come close when it comes to performance
i like the interior design of the Acura more, and the exterior im neatural on both equally nice and beautiful, but i think the acura is better suited for a longer term owner, and the bmw for the shorter term owner, reliability and longevity wise the acura will for sure outlast the bmw
BMW all the way. Even just the enormous list of creature comforts/features puts it ahead of 99% of other cars on the road
Yeah but it breaks down. Plastic under the hood. Electrical gremlins. High maintenance
Until the repair bills start coming in.
@@rahimi4762Yet BMW was just rated as one of the most reliable auto brands by CR. I've had 4 G20s in the family, all are bulletproof.
I love you Honda, but I can’t turn down the b58.
Honda vs bmw, that sounds crazy to me.
Fair enough!
must be out of your mind to ever pick the tlx over the m340i
We have a black Type S with red interior. I love it but I wish it at 50 more hp, I think that engine could easily handle that.
As nice as the BMW is, I’ll ever buy any german car again. Sure they look nice when their new but most people lease those for a reason.
Intro is GOAT
Thank u!
Just seeing a 340i be compared to that is disrespectful bro ..this hurts
When you put the tlx in comfort mode the steering wheel gets really easy to move
I agree
Bro, I really wanna get the same rear diffuser cause I don’t want quad pipes. Can you tell me where did you get it?
Dude, you need to move the seat up and forward
The chances of me picking that Acura over the 340i is less than nonexistent. You’d be crazy high to even make such decision.
I'd probably take the acura, I've been burn by BMW too many times at this point.
@@85CEKRI can respect that. Acura’s software is a nightmare though.
M340i all day! B58 is a treasure.
