    To help with the organizing, I'd like to say that that whole room would be all hay. It might not even be enough hay for the winter with 5 goats. 100-120 bales is what we get for 5-6 goats for southern Maine winters. Buying hay in the winter is super expensive, if you can find it at all; cheaper to have a place to store a lot of it.
    For the organization ideas, we never seem to have enough shelves in the milk parlor. Balms, feed, minerals, and a washstand for hands and udders. The milking stand does double duty to keep the goats in check during hoof trimmings, so we keep most of the 'goat beauty' stuff in there too. So, I totally recommend putting in a counter with shelving below!
    Also, we like to get small covered buckets for minerals from the local grocery, the bakery gives them away for free with covers. Great way to keep stuff organized in the milking parlor.

    What's good about us warm (HOT) weather people (california), is that we also have beaches. So on those hot and sticky days, just a five minute drive and I can get into the perfect temp water.

    Its been super hot and humid!! We went out to move chickens for the first time yesterday. It was around 3. We thought it wasnt that bad lol till we got to lifting then some raking. We didnt stay out as long as we was planning. We planned to let the dogs run and wear themselfs out cause we have a 8 month-old chihuahua pup who was hyper. Needless to say none of us wanted to stay out long lol. In the summer we get up earlier come back and nap at the hottest and go back out when it getting dark. We are in Indiana. It gets crazy!

    • @fallingleaves6951
      @fallingleaves6951 6 лет назад

      Plastic garbage cans might be better. Had metal cans for feed once and occasionally when temps and humidity were just right, they would sweat inside and the feed would get moldy and have to be thrown out. Never have had that problem with the heavy duty plastic cans.

    In Spanish goat meat is Cabrito and in French it's Chevon (from Chèvre goat cheese) or just CAPRA City = Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus). You could use any of those words for your new City. Goats like to eat brush rather than grass. With goats they eat things from the shoulders and above. So when the field starts growing brush again let it grow for them.

      It can be, we do have about 5.5 months of growing season though! We use irrigation here, and grass clippings (or what we call green gold) as mulch, not a lot of trees around so we use what we can to keep the ground moist.
      Oh wow, that's really suiting then! I like your shortened version.

    Ahh, so it was Gina's idea to add the skylights - well done! The goat barn is looking excellent and has bags of character. Loved the wind-chime and especially the truck! Hmm, naming wise, you could maybe go slightly Batman-esque, and call it 'Goatham City' or go slightly Swedish _(heya Andreas!)_ and call it 'Goattenberg'? :) 🐐

    From what I've seen on Art & Bri, also Weed 'N' Reap, goats don't like rain or getting wet. Perhaps put some sort of raised area in the barn side so they can get up off the dirt if it rains enough to satuarate the ground & leak into the shed.

    For storage what about adding a "attic" with a couple of pieces of plywood above your milking room? What are you plans for the field? If you just plan on goats for livestock I would not focus on grass. Goats that eat just grass can develop similar problems to humans eating junk food. You might want to create lanes separated with fruit trees and brambles (raspberry and blackberry). Mulberry are good fruit trees as the leaves and branches are a favorite of goats.

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  6 лет назад

      we have been kicking around the idea of the attic. Once the land is cleared we want to see the lay of it and then design a good plan

  • @jimclaire7996

    Al, you will have two goats. I would build a double milking stanchion. I would also consider a keyhole feeder. We were over 90 yesterday. I really can not deal with the cold, but different strokes...
    Put your hay in farther, as well as your milking parlor. Keep the goats by the door. You will milk and do vet work inside. Trim hooves by the station. I would keep my manure close to the door. Keep a bucket or waterer near the outside. A quarter cup of vinegar to a five gallon measure of Bater will give you more female goat kids. Believe it. Vinegar works. I think your barn is great. I just used a milking stand and a shipping crate and it worked.
    You are blessed with a lot of great compost. Al, you are a blessed man.

    Not to be picking on you, but on your gate, the angled board you put on there is on the wrong side; it's supposed to be from the lower hinge and up to the far corner to support the gate. My great grand father was a wagon builder of trade, and I grew up with my grand parents. He taught me a lot about wood working 😉😊😎

    Caprinae Castle, goats are members of the Caprinae species. In the goat barn, run a few boards across from the dividing partition wall to the end wall to make a mini loft. You can also do that over the goat sleeping area, you can then use the loft area for a little more hay or straw storage.

    Great goat barn! The field/pasture looks great! As a goat owner, I can confirm that they can be mischievious!! I would suggest a latch of some type at the bottom of the gate as the littler breeds will push on it. And metal containers for any loose feed to prevent rodents and keep it dry. Possibly a larger hay storage area somewhere for those winters? Great carpentry work!

All of the things like iodine and supplement paste or wormers etc can be locked away so the crafty goats can't get to it, but it's so much easier to have it handy- especially when you're milking. God bless...

    There is, of course, Groton, NH ... so Goaton? Thanks again, for another installment! I think the cool room costing less is really interesting. I thought that would up your electric bill. I wonder if you'll continue to see that 'performance' in the heat of high summer when humidity is at its finest!

    Hey Al, I am making your bread as I watch this my oven is preheating. Thanks for the recipe. Hopefully the goats will not jump over the gate.

    Lived in Maine back in the 50’s and your heat is worst than here in Texas. Couldn’t take your winters when I was stationed up there during the service. My mother’s side of the family were all from Maine so I know Main and NH.

    Goats like to lay on platform areas off the ground, that might be something nice to add on the sides inside the goat areas. Their natural habitats is rocky hillsides so their feet do better the less they are on dirt
    Lol clearly I wrote this before hearing that you are putting in goat bunk beds... they will be happy healthy goats

    One of the reasons we moved to Alaska was to get away from the heat and humidity in Kansas.

    Talking about humidity. You should try living in Southeast Tennessee. In the Summer, it's almost unbearable.
