North DaGoata ! Lol 😂 I’m quite pleased with myself 🤩 !
To help with the organizing, I'd like to say that that whole room would be all hay. It might not even be enough hay for the winter with 5 goats. 100-120 bales is what we get for 5-6 goats for southern Maine winters. Buying hay in the winter is super expensive, if you can find it at all; cheaper to have a place to store a lot of it.
For the organization ideas, we never seem to have enough shelves in the milk parlor. Balms, feed, minerals, and a washstand for hands and udders. The milking stand does double duty to keep the goats in check during hoof trimmings, so we keep most of the 'goat beauty' stuff in there too. So, I totally recommend putting in a counter with shelving below!
Also, we like to get small covered buckets for minerals from the local grocery, the bakery gives them away for free with covers. Great way to keep stuff organized in the milking parlor.
What's good about us warm (HOT) weather people (california), is that we also have beaches. So on those hot and sticky days, just a five minute drive and I can get into the perfect temp water.
Its been super hot and humid!! We went out to move chickens for the first time yesterday. It was around 3. We thought it wasnt that bad lol till we got to lifting then some raking. We didnt stay out as long as we was planning. We planned to let the dogs run and wear themselfs out cause we have a 8 month-old chihuahua pup who was hyper. Needless to say none of us wanted to stay out long lol. In the summer we get up earlier come back and nap at the hottest and go back out when it getting dark. We are in Indiana. It gets crazy!
Goatsylvania! My favorite from other comments, but also
Nannytucket.
I like Nannytuckett (you need two "t" at the end though) ~8^)
Oh, I love Nannytuckett! 🙌🏻
Good job on Goatsylvaina!
Yodelling Park ! For the Goat barn !
We use a steel garbage can to store our grain to keep predators out. This humidity is killing me and suppose to be cold and wet next week, yuck!!!
Plastic garbage cans might be better. Had metal cans for feed once and occasionally when temps and humidity were just right, they would sweat inside and the feed would get moldy and have to be thrown out. Never have had that problem with the heavy duty plastic cans.
In Spanish goat meat is Cabrito and in French it's Chevon (from Chèvre goat cheese) or just CAPRA City = Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus). You could use any of those words for your new City. Goats like to eat brush rather than grass. With goats they eat things from the shoulders and above. So when the field starts growing brush again let it grow for them.
Great job Olivia!
like the goat barn....love the wind chime.....
I hear you, we had a week that was in the upper 80s with just 50% humidity, I was dying! Norm here is 0-15% humidity, we live in the desert in Washington state. Our average rainfall is less than Phoenix, AZ! So it's always interesting coming along for the ride and getting to see what different hurdles you guys face!
I like Goatsborough! And it fits with New Hamshire! Haha
Thats crazy. Growing a garden must be a challenge. I like Goatsboro I grew up in the boro area of MA
It can be, we do have about 5.5 months of growing season though! We use irrigation here, and grass clippings (or what we call green gold) as mulch, not a lot of trees around so we use what we can to keep the ground moist.
Oh wow, that's really suiting then! I like your shortened version.
Ahh, so it was Gina's idea to add the skylights - well done! The goat barn is looking excellent and has bags of character. Loved the wind-chime and especially the truck! Hmm, naming wise, you could maybe go slightly Batman-esque, and call it 'Goatham City' or go slightly Swedish _(heya Andreas!)_ and call it 'Goattenberg'? :) 🐐
Simon B I love both names!!
I love Goatham city!
You went from New Yolk City to to New Ham Shire, so keep going east to Nova S'Goatia.
Greg Sabados 😂😂😂
I live in golden California in the Santa Cruz mountains near the coast. We don't have the temperature swings you guys have and we don't have the humidity. Our heat is dry and much more comfortable. We get our rain during the late fall and winter. During the summer we get some fog, but that's it.
Nice update of the farm! TFS
the pigs are so cute !! great work in the goat barn/milking parlor !!that excavator is making short work of them tree stumps !! love the wind chime !!
And to think, right now you're wishing for warmer weather 🤣 I live in Georgia. The saying down here is: is you don't like the weather now, wait around 5 minutes, it'll change! Today is 6/11/2019 currently 72 and muggy with a few more showers on the way...
Good idea on the 🐐 sky lights Gina!
I spent two years in India recently. You would not believe how debilitating I found that heat. The people move really slowly at all times. Even when walking barefoot on ashfault. What an experience those two years were.
Bahhhston Commons!
terrie allred GREAT NAME....LOVE IT!!!!!
LOL 😂 here in central Texas it’s over 90 and we start before sun rise ( first light) and get out of it by 1pm.
you can keep that weather! Lol
I live in central AL. Spring,Fall and Winter are great. Summer is brutal. Its true that the temperature doesn't bother u it's the humidity that makes u miserable. The upside is your tomatoes get 6' tall. Lol one year I was cutting okra with a step stool.
I bet the tomatoes love that weather! That is some tall okra
My snap peas are beginning to harvest ... !
You get used to it. I was raised in CT, move to NC in 1972, it took a couple of years to get used to the heat, but i could never go back to the cold
From what I've seen on Art & Bri, also Weed 'N' Reap, goats don't like rain or getting wet. Perhaps put some sort of raised area in the barn side so they can get up off the dirt if it rains enough to satuarate the ground & leak into the shed.
You are making such good progress. Have an awesome weekend, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden
an old timey drink called "Haymakers" 1 cup molasses in 1 quart apple cider vinegar...replaces electrolytes and is surprisingly good cold or warm.
I have heard of that drink before but I have never tried it.
love the skylights
For storage what about adding a "attic" with a couple of pieces of plywood above your milking room? What are you plans for the field? If you just plan on goats for livestock I would not focus on grass. Goats that eat just grass can develop similar problems to humans eating junk food. You might want to create lanes separated with fruit trees and brambles (raspberry and blackberry). Mulberry are good fruit trees as the leaves and branches are a favorite of goats.
we have been kicking around the idea of the attic. Once the land is cleared we want to see the lay of it and then design a good plan
I think Chicagoat would fit nicely.
Terry M clever! 👍
Sky lights are a very good idea Gina. Al and Gina, you did a great job
on the goat barn. It's nice to see all you have done and continue to do to take care of your family Al, and of course your wife Gina. So wise Al to buy the land. That is true wealth!!!
Beautiful 70's here in Western Washington.
Northdagoata
Hunter Reames awesome
Little Big Horn for the goat barn.
medical supplies maybe in a small bin up on the shelf too, wipes etc.
Goatlahoma City
I agree with you Al. I keep my house close to the same temperature summer and winter. 65 degrees. I really don't like hot and sticky. Not fond of the 20 below temps but I can always put on more clothing. The fork is supposed to be bent LOL!! Maybe a solar powered light for inside the goat barn????
What area do you live in? I like the solar light idea!
I live in East Nebraska. I have seen lights powered by solar panels. I will check on where they are avilable and let you know.
I sent a message on FaceBook
Organization tip!! Keep grain in big trashcans to keep mice away. Use storage bins for different supplies. We have one for veterinary supplies, one for grooming supplies, and one with kidding supplies! That way when you need a bin you can just grab it and go and know it is clean and ready to use.
Great video as always buddy! Just some advice I would 100% keep the goats feed in a sealable garbage can or container so if they inevitably get into the milking parlor side someday they cannot eat it all! Enjoy the weekend bud
Midwestern Homestead and tokeep the mice out
That too!
I'm with you Al, not a heat and humidity guy myself. Need a certain amount for plant growth.
Al, you will have two goats. I would build a double milking stanchion. I would also consider a keyhole feeder. We were over 90 yesterday. I really can not deal with the cold, but different strokes...
Put your hay in farther, as well as your milking parlor. Keep the goats by the door. You will milk and do vet work inside. Trim hooves by the station. I would keep my manure close to the door. Keep a bucket or waterer near the outside. A quarter cup of vinegar to a five gallon measure of Bater will give you more female goat kids. Believe it. Vinegar works. I think your barn is great. I just used a milking stand and a shipping crate and it worked.
You are blessed with a lot of great compost. Al, you are a blessed man.
Barn name: Milksachussetts. God bless!
Jim Claire great name!!
Thanks for the tip also!! On the water for girl goats.
what does the apple cider vinegar water do?
Al, Gina and Olivia-- I thought that - Nannytucket Parlor 🐐was apropro. Very cute idea. ..excellent milking parlor so far.... the goats are going to be some lucky little kid's. 🌻🕊🌻🌻and-- the piggy's are very happy....Pluto is a happy camper for sure...😎🐷🍅🐷🐷
The Billy Abode ~8^) Good mornin' AL.... Gina......Olivia, and a sundry of critterz! Take care.
The Milk House
Your place is looking great.
I think the goats could jump that gate to get to the feed. There pretty mysterious I think you said? I would put a top half to that door so the goats cant get in when your not there milking but when you are there the top half could be open for light and so you dont feel claustrophobic.
i was going to say the same thing :) goats like to jump and i lost one buckling that way he jumped over ate too much i was at work think he died of bloat. so yeah make a double door and can open top when your in there.
Not to be picking on you, but on your gate, the angled board you put on there is on the wrong side; it's supposed to be from the lower hinge and up to the far corner to support the gate. My great grand father was a wagon builder of trade, and I grew up with my grand parents. He taught me a lot about wood working 😉😊😎
But it's a great little barn that you built, and I really love to follow your family on the homestead. Thank you for sharing your farm life with us 😊😎
Gotta love the oximoron "Rough Smooth"! Looking good Al!
The goat barn should be called GoateysBurg!
Great idea on the skylights Gina! I love how Al changes his voice to greet each breed of animal. Especially, the "good morning girls" to the piggies. What a great family.
I don’t like the extreme heat but right at this minute we are in the single digits and would love some heat right now… lol
Caprinae Castle, goats are members of the Caprinae species. In the goat barn, run a few boards across from the dividing partition wall to the end wall to make a mini loft. You can also do that over the goat sleeping area, you can then use the loft area for a little more hay or straw storage.
100 degrees already here in Texas, 85 sounds like a cold front!
Lovely video.
It was in the 90's today here and I'm in Indiana which isn't like nearly as bad as the people in the south have it.
I realize it’s been years, but do you recall how you fastened the strapping boards to the metal frame of the shelter frame? Did you thru-bolt them? Metal screw? I’m going to follow your design to build a hard shed from a retired tent frame same as yours. Thanks, fan since before the first 10k viewership! And the guy who sent you pink ratchet straps years ago!
looking really good, might want to check out a rock picker-upper to pull behind your tractor , good luck
im with you prefer snow and cold over the hot humid, love watching your journey
you should have put the door to 1 side. Then you could have used the other side to store things and milk station on that side also. Then goats could have been put in along 1 side for easy in and out and you have clean area for milking and storage of hay and material.
Hi. AL you are doing a good job and thank you for sharing your video homestead chicken farmer garden bye 👋 bye 👋 👨👩👧👸👕👓🐩🐔🐓🐥🐕🐖🐈🐐🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
I don't know how I missed the video of the baby chicks they are getting big. On the goat barn naming? I like what Simeon said. I would name it after the type of goat you like. Let Olivia pick the name the goat Barn.
How about Kid Land ? I can't believe the electric bill. I would have bet it would have been higher !!!
I moved from New England 39 years ago to Colorado and I love the dry weather here !!
I bet the dry weather is Awesome!
You make it all look so simple... you are one hardworking man. Awesome & impressive.
Oh so glad you got a wind chime! Wicked cute!
the handiest man ive ever seen, I think he could build anything can I borrow al for awhile?
Yesrurday in Tennessee it was 97 degree.
You could name that Barn scapegoat Palisade
Awesome goat barn love how it came out. Love what your doing out there, big fan. You have an awesome family 👍🏻
Field and barn are Looking good! You are one handy man. Goats are such fun to own your family will enjoy them. Only 28 degrees here in lovely Meeker Colorado USA this morning not a warm weather place to live either. Creative chime the fork tine is bent on purpose. Have a cracken good day!
Bahston, Connectigoat!
You should put a solar light under your skylight to charge. Place a switch by the door so at night you have light in your barn. You could do it in the milking area also.
Goat shack (like the song Love shack)
New Dairy Haven, New Nanny Haven....what kind of goats....Nubian Haven...🤪 see where I am going.
New Dairy Castle, New Dairy Queens
We are moving new week to 2.5 acres next week and I am getting Nigerian Dwarfs the following week. Excited and inspired by your channel!
My grandson (5 yrs) LOVES the way you start your videos....
Very good, but a touch cold and draughty in the winter. And how do get in to shelter. They don't like the wet.
Great goat barn! The field/pasture looks great! As a goat owner, I can confirm that they can be mischievious!! I would suggest a latch of some type at the bottom of the gate as the littler breeds will push on it. And metal containers for any loose feed to prevent rodents and keep it dry. Possibly a larger hay storage area somewhere for those winters? Great carpentry work!
New Goat-leans-too . I actually was thinking Goatham City, but...since I see its mentioned. Great minds, Simon !B
I’d add a few closable windows, the more light the better. Even if it’s just barn style, wood cut outs you can open and shut. One on each side
Would be good for circulation purposes-- but I do like the simplicity of it all and with the wxception of the roof, it was made with materials left over from other projects. Very cool.
Keeping the theme alive, how about calling it Nannytucket?
Okay, thought of a couple that would be even more in keeping with the theme. Either go with East Cheeseter or West Cheeseter depending upon the orientation on your property.
That is a fabulous name-- love it!
It is sticky right now down here. But it only lasts from mid April to the end of September. We are on the water so we get the cool breezes. The average summer temperatures are 85-90F. You just get out to do the chores early or late in the day.
I've thought that too but it was I don't know how people can deal with all that cold and yucky snow but I guess its all in what your use to. I can't take the cold winters, I spent two winters in WV came back to NC the 2nd summer with low vitamin D. A 250 day growing season without a greenhouse, lots of sunshine and mild winters is better for me. Not everyone can take the heat.
You make building look so easy and effortless our electricity in Australia 🇦🇺 is terrible and high at the moment 😳good job on the goat 🐐 Shed
Awesome job on the goat barn. A suggestion would be to make a wall mounted cabinet. Sort of like a medicine cabinet in a bathroom. All of the things like iodine and supplement paste or wormers etc can be locked away so the crafty goats can't get to it, but it's so much easier to have it handy- especially when you're milking. God bless...
You should name it Boarston Massachusetts.
just a tough what if the storage was in front and the goat in the back , so when u need to store your stuff u can easy acces whit out goat in the way and crap on the ground.
Awesome idea Gina! Goats should be very happy with their new home.
🌻Have a beautiful day and a better tomorrow🌻
There is, of course, Groton, NH ... so Goaton? Thanks again, for another installment! I think the cool room costing less is really interesting. I thought that would up your electric bill. I wonder if you'll continue to see that 'performance' in the heat of high summer when humidity is at its finest!
Hey Al, I am making your bread as I watch this my oven is preheating. Thanks for the recipe. Hopefully the goats will not jump over the gate.
Lived in Maine back in the 50’s and your heat is worst than here in Texas. Couldn’t take your winters when I was stationed up there during the service. My mother’s side of the family were all from Maine so I know Main and NH.
Love, love, love those chicken tractors!!
Goats like to lay on platform areas off the ground, that might be something nice to add on the sides inside the goat areas. Their natural habitats is rocky hillsides so their feet do better the less they are on dirt
Lol clearly I wrote this before hearing that you are putting in goat bunk beds... they will be happy healthy goats
They will fight for the top bunk!
Memphis, 92 degrees, >90% humidity - average summer
I wouldnt do good in that
Hello from california!! we are in the high 90's this weekend
Milkwaukee Alley
The 🐐 Goat Haven .Hi good morning Al Gina and Olivia have a beautiful day today all day long., I also ratter cold weather. Till the next video God bless 👋 bye. Have 🐐🐐🐐🐐
Goatsburg... Barn looks great!
You got some rock picking in your future .... all the best!
Al,, how bout "" Milky Way"" :) Another great video~~
Dawna Karma cute name idea
Nannytuckut should complement New Yolk City.
One of the reasons we moved to Alaska was to get away from the heat and humidity in Kansas.
I dont blame you! Lol
New Goat Leans
Talking about humidity. You should try living in Southeast Tennessee. In the Summer, it's almost unbearable.
