This track is an Opus introduction to the album containing part similar to songs on the album. This was not a single, and would only be on the radio if some late-night program played the whole double-album.
You MUST do "Love Reign O'er Me".
I saw the amazing Quadraphenia tour in 1997 with a number of special guests. They performed the whole 17-track double-album in order, then "I'm The Face" from the movie, and then Magic Bus, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pete acoustic Pinball Wizard, Behind Blue Eyes, Substitute, Can't Explain, The Kids Are Alright, and Who Are You. That was the only concert I saw at this amphiteatre that went over the legal time of 11:00pm by more than a minute - almost 30 minutes at $1000 per min. fine (restriction when they built the place) - and probably a "You can't come back here".
After "Love Reign O'er Me", I'd suggest "Won't Get Fooled Again" and then "Eminence Front"(for a taste of the 80's).

The song "Quadrophenia" is one of two instrumental songs on the album. The other one is called "The Rock", and to me it is in the same league as "La Villa Strangiato" by Rush with regards to instrumental songs. Also, I HIGHLY recommend you react to the last song on Quadrophenia called "Love Reign O'er Me". In my opinion, Love Reign O'er Me isn't just the greatest song by The Who.....it is the greatest song of all time by any band!!!

Rock Opera: Tommy, Quadrophenia, A Quick One, and so many other Who songs! The Who was one of the biggest influences on Rush. So much great, expansive, progressive, operatic Rock music from Britain, as of the late 60's -- Thank you, Beatles for leading the way -- and into the 70's. Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, and King Crimson, along with The Who, are the masters!

The late John Entwhistle on bass and Keith Moon on drums are phenominal as well as Pete Townsend and Roger Daltry of course.A MASTERPIECE ...NO DOUBT!

Quadrophenia is a remarkable accomplishment. Pete Townsend is a musical genius and composed the entire album. I was fortunate to see the band in concert in 1975 and they were a force of nature. Watch a couple of videos of the band live and you’ll get a small dose of what it was like to see them perform in person. Pete would leap, spin, windmill on the guitar. Keith Moon never stopped. His energy on drums was unlike any other drummer you’ve ever seen, Roger Daltry would swing his microphone like a lasso while John Entwistle (nicknamed Thunder Fingers) keeps everything grounded with some of the best bass playing ever. They were the best loudest band of the era.

This is a great song but in my opinion Love Reign O'er Me and The Real Me are the stand out songs on the Quadraphenia album and you are right, it is a concept album, and the idea behind it is that the main character sufferers from schizophrenia but rather than just having one other voice he has 4 personalities so Pete Townsend made up the word Quadraphenia to describe the condition.

    • @castlew4162
      @castlew4162 2 года назад +1

OK, this is a reply as you requested. Jimmy(played by Phil Daniels in the 1979 movie) is the main character, and the ocean waves you were hearing were when Jimmy rides his SCOOTER to Brighton (No spoiler - watch the movie to see what happens to him).

This is the Overture of the album, presenting all the main themes that musically express and represent the personalities of all four Who members. But like it's already been said, the best way to do QUADROPHENIA is to listen from start to finish.

QUADROPHENIA: Like schizophrenia, based on the 4 (quad) personalities of the band. (Plus, quadrophonic sound was a fad at the time, the "surround sound" of its day...)

To really get a grip of this you need to check up on 1960s youth culture, where tastes in music and dress were divided into two distinct camps. You were either a Mod or a Rocker! Both used recreational drugs, Mods wore stylish clothes and took a pride in their appearance, wore sharp suits, short hair, and had an appreciation into soul music. They are always depicted riding Vespa or Lambretta scooters. And wore oversized combat parkas while riding their scooters. Rockers on the other hand were depicted as leather jacketed jean wearing motorcyclists, and the two groups were mortal enemies.
The two factions were famously remembered in the 60s congregating at Brighton (and other resorts) to have huge beach fights, where they would use the seafront as a no holds barred battleground. There are mentions of all these things can be heard if you listen to the whole album carefully. It was one of the first albums ever to depict mental health problems in connection to youth culture.
Its a deeper album than it first appears, but is a true masterpiece.

Quadrophenia, was The Who’s sixth album, came out in 1973. It’s a rock opera and they made a movie out of it. Personally I like The album and the movie better than “Tommy”. “Who’s Next” is their best album, i’m 64 One of the great things about growing up in the 70s, is the concerts. The Who, Stones, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Yes, Eagles, Queen, The Dead, Pink Floyd, Tull, Jackson Browne, James Brown, Starship, Ronstadt, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Doobies, War, T.O.P. Chicago, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Carly Simon, The Band, about 400 concerts in my life. Money well spent

The "synthesizer" was first used in rock music by bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Moody Blues. It was called a Mellotron. It was a huge machine that used sound from violins that was recorded on tape. When you pressed a key, it would play the tape with that note. It was primative. You could not play chords. So musicians had to be creative with loops, playing things backwards, etc.

John Entwistle the bass guitarist plays lead bass on several tracks on this album Both him and the drummer Keith Moon are considered among the best in all of rock on their instruments This album came out in 1973 Who's Next preceded it Tommy came out in 69

Stop that! It was 1973 and they were before everybody, especially ELO lol
But i'm not mad, everyone copied off Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull (well maybe not, they're unmatchable), Babe Ruth, King Crimson.... When this first came out i was but a wee lass --- this taught me everything I knew then about Brit life, oh and also Pink Floyd lol
But I felt that angst all the way to the bone, bless your hearts and welcome to the cult! 😀 And also they played as perfectly live as in studio, i got to see them a few times back in the day.

  • @bostonwhofan

At the beginning when you guys were asking things about the album cover, I was thinking to myself they are already starting to discover what the concept of the album is all about. The guy on the motor scooter is a teenager named Jimmy going through the rough part of life when teens morph into adults. Jimmy had it particularly rough to the point where he didn't just feel schizophrenic, he felt quadrophenic - (quad = 4). As he looks into the mirrors on his scooter he see's 4 faces.....and he doesn't know which one is the real me.

Sorry Pink Floyd, Quad is the best concept album and a top five rock album of all time. As other posters have said, you need to listen to the whole album in one session to really get how great this Pete Townsend creation is. The synth started to be used in the late 60’s but really caught on and was big with Prog Rock in the 70’s.
