Excellent job rescuing what could have been a disaster.. a lesson for us all and the colour mix to produce the earth shade is inspired. One to remember. Thanks.
Looking at the superb finish you have achieved makes me wonder if anyone has thought to represent a model as the Spitfire rolled out of Castle Bromwich or Southampton, before delivery to the squadron with just its serial? The challenge is the weathering of front line service of course. She looks fantastic.
Why are you going for a hard line between the camo colours? I seemost people go for a soft line. Just curious. Enjoying your videos and can't wait to start on mine.
There's a clear photo of this aircraft in the instructions which shows a hard edge - Many - maybe most - early spits were hard edge applied in the factory. Subsequent repairs and touch ups might have been done freehand and led to a softer edge. I suspect many modellers go for a soft edge as it shows off the airbrush skills and I'd probably say it looks better on a model.
I have airbrushed Tamiya clear without issue, however, I airbrushed AK flat clear and it left a white film over everything and nearly ruined my model. I was able to recoat with original paint and save it but I'm scared to death to use flat clear again! I have some Tamiya flat clear but I'm hesitant to use it in case I have the same issue. Any thoughts?? The Spitfire is looking great!
I’ve no experience of AK clear Chris but I’ve had other flat finishes go white. I now use either Tamiya flat clear or Mr hobby GX flat. I now thin my varnishes at least 50-60% thinners and apply in really thin coats building the finish up gradually.
Thanks Jerry I usually thin at least 50%thinners/paint. For this scheme it was a bit thinner to allow the underpainting to show through and give a bit more control of the effect - probably 60% thinners.
Best to find references Paul - There’s a good photo of the aircraft in the instructions showing a hard edge. Many if not most early spits were hard out of the factory.

The mix is my new go to for British dark earth. Looking forward to seeing how it looks finished
Happy to see you have completely recovered the paint job! Keep up the awesome work!
Back on track now.
A1 job Steve. Coming along brilliantly.
Thanks Phil
Sensational camo work this is going to be a beautiful build mate
Hope so Dean
Great recovery. Looking great.
Thanks
Was gritting my teeth as you were unwrapping - just in case, proper job Steve!
Second time lucky Dave 👍😅🥵
What a beautiful job you are doing on this kit. Amazing finish so far, despite your unfortunate set-back recently. A winner!
Thanks mark
Wasn't sure how the shape edges would look but it really did come out amazing.
Well done Mr Steve.
Thanks David 👍
Really enjoying the build!
Great - thank you
You doing a great Job sir tempted to drag my spitfire from the stash
Do - it’s too good to sit on a shelf
Very smooth and interesting result. Good approach to strip the old the model down and start again.
I think so - better result second time
Painting came really nice. It did payoff to strip it.Nice job.
Think so - I’m glad I did
Lovely work, as always, & nice recovery.
My preferred RAF Dark Earth colour is Gunze H72, but thanks for identifying a valid contender/replacement.
Thanks - Looking at my pot of Gunze the Tamiya mix is very close to it. I think I prefer Tamiya for ease of use and drying time.
Looking really nice! I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks Paul 👍
Looks great
Cheers Rich
great work on top camo
Thanks Mick

Thanks John I dare say someone’s done that - I prefer a bit more worn look to mine.
Lovely, thanks. =)
Thanks 👍
Yep, you hung in there! 😂
Thanks Patrick
Steve, would you ever consider applying your skills to museum scale, albeit scratch built, models?
I don’t think I’d have time Finlay - I’ve got all on trying to keep up with what I’ve got to do for the channel😬😬
Nice editing. You’re getting better at narrative flow, if you will allow me to say so.
Edit: Lovely camo, too.
Thanks Dan I’ve learned a lot about editing and looking to tighten it up quite a bit. nice to know you’ve noticed 👍

@@TheModelShed Ok, fair enough and thanks for the reply.
Hi, Steve would those paint shades be applicable to my Dambusters Lancaster that I am building at the moment.
They would indeed - I’ll be using them on my Dambuster when I’ve finished the airframe
Nice save after your misfortune with the paint
Yup it was worth it 👍

Just how thin do you make your paint?

Why didn’t you use lacquer for the camouflage. I just ordered this kit with some resin exhaust and aftermarket PE.
Tamiya don’t do a dark earth in lacquers yet Paul. I prefer to mix my own from Tamiya acrylic
Thanks!
Lovely paint job, is hard camouflage edge authentic, or your choice as a modeller? Never know quite how to approach camouflage. 👍👏
