  • I've never been much of a fan mullet and I'm not talking about the hair style even though I don't care for that either, I'm talking about the fish. In southern Florida where we used to live they were quite stinky and fishy but we keep hearing at our new home that they taste pretty darn good so we decided to try them out again. We were extremely shocked to find out these guys were quite good. A little softer than most fish but still tasty. They probably tasted better because of how fun they are to chase with a spear. It's about the bottom Mullet caught on white sandy bottom doesn't get the overpowering flavor of dirt, a mud bottom feeder gets the flavor of the table it is eating from.

Mullet has a very, like hardy meat. That why I soup them and they are delicious!

Cool video. Get rid of the bread crumbs and get some corn meal. Winter months are best for taste and size.

We used to use a gill net in lake George to catch mullet. It was a little scary because of the alligators 🐊 and stepping on a stingray. Btw smoked or fried mullet is great either way

Cool spear set up. Remember seeing these years ago. I think some of them had a sling on a tube the spear fit inside of.

I've been spearfishing around the Tampa Bay area and this makes me want to come up to Cystal River. Where abouts was this filmed?

That's not a Hawaiian Sling, it's a Pole Spear. Like calling a longbow, a recurve lol. They are both traditional spearfishing equipment but definitely not the same.

He was in Fresh water, Mullett are salt water fish that spawn in fresh waters, in large numbers around Oct or so. They are seen around here in the Pensacola Fl area in groups or balls of 30 or so ft diameter. Folks that are in the know always tell me tha backbone is the best meat, but I have never found fault in any of it

Hate to be a Debbie Downer, spearfishing in Freshwater in Florida is illegal anywhere in the State. Ask me how I know 😁

I spoke to fwc. It goes by the species your spearing because there are so many bodies of water that carry both fresh and saltwater species. There are no lines to distinguish between fresh and salt. If i shot a freshwater species that’s when I’m in deep crap.

I enjoy your channel and take no offense, but ya'll must be yankees. There ain't nothin' better than smoked or fried mullet, whether it's in North Florida or the Southern end. I'm guessing from the comments below, which are hysterical to say the least, most of your followers are too. Oh well, it ensures there will be no shortage for me. At any rate, thanks for another video.

Hahaha I knew someone was gonna call us out on this. I swear those mullet in southwest Florida smelled like hot diarrhea. These were pretty good.
