I hope you enjoy this chatty video, containing 6 unspoken rules when shopping in luxury stores. These include being aware of the alarms, not stepping behind the cash counters to look at items on the shelves behind and feeling like you don't belong in such stores... they are just shops after all, and you're there to enjoy yourself :)
P.s. the earring thing is a bit gross, but I've seen it done!

Hi Sophie, 16th not too bad I suppose....was watching Emmerdale. Looks like I might have beaten Rebecca...shes still feeling v poorly with her 2nd bout of covid. I was 17 when I went into a designer boutique for the first time, my friend and I just swanned into Gucci on Bond St and I got my father a birthday present without a thought (it was prior to Pretty Woman). Lookig back total kudos to the staff who served me with no issue but at the time to me I was a customer and was being treated just the way I thought I should be, which is how it should be I suppose. Hugs xx

Hello Jill! Still early however! David is currently watching the football (I don't know how he does it, it is quite boring to me, haha) Your Gucci experience sounds great, and the fact you were there at age 17 - that's living the dream!! As you say, that good service you received is as it should be, and I bet it's consequently kept you as a customer over the years. Send my love to Rebecca, I'm so sorry to hear she's still poorly, it's a horrible virus :( Hugs to you xx

the last point in the video was 5. i was like, wait a minute is this 6 or 5 unspoken rules, and then i saw it was 6. dang did i miss out a point? scrolling back, you happened to have point "4" number repeated in the print so maybe that's why the last was 5. Small thing of course! but it was a funny that i was worried about missing out a point. =P

Whereas in when I was at the I shopping in harrods I felt fine and was chatting happily to the store assistants who helped me with my purchase. Thanks for bringing this up.

My worst experience in a luxury shop was when I was in my 20s. I got my first proper job and was working enormous overtime. I saved up and wanted to get my first luxury item. I walked in and asked to try on an item. This SA looked me up and down and said “are you going to buy something or are you just wasting my time?”
I just said “forget it”. No way was I giving my hard-earned money to them!

Ask her if she’s going to be a cashier for the rest of her life, or open her own store one day. These salespeople kill me with their superior attitudes, like they don’t work for a paycheck just like we do.

  • @elizabethh9591

My grandmother worked in luxury. She could not afford to buy it. She always said they were trained to treat the customers the same, regardless of how they were dressed or spoke, etc. You never presumed if someone could afford something or not. If the customer could not afford it today, but a few years from now - they could - they would come back and buy from you when the time was right. My first visit to a real luxury shop was Chanel - I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and actually carrying a nylon backpack instead of a real handbag, not dressed up or anything - I had excellent service and bought a bag and matching wallet. So I really just believe in behaving with manners in ANY store and treating the salespeople as humans, just like you would want to be treated, and if you don't get treated right - just go elsewhere.

I remember one particula incident at a Guess Collection store in the Shepard's Bush mall (London). Granted, obviously that's not a luxury boutique, but still. T
here was only one member of staff at the store when I got there and she was serving another customer, so I waited. I had my eyes set on a specific watch that I wanted to buy which is why I waited patiently. For over 20 minutes. While the staff's "serving" turned into openly flirting with the customer. She saw me, she knew I wanted something, but ignored me to continue her flirting. When it was like...10 minutes before closing time I said "excuse me, I'd like to buy a watch and I've been waiting for quite a while". She goes "no, I need to close the cash registry now, I want to go home. I don't get paid for overtime." She argued a good 15 minutes that she was done working for the day and didn't want to serve me anymore. Eventually I left without the watch. I was so pissed at her for the lousy service that I went back to the store a day or two later to talk to the manager and buy that watch that I had been looking for for weeks.
I told the manager what had happened and the girl had the audacity to lie to her manager about the whole thing, and right in front of me too.
Well end of story is that the manager apoligzed several times and I saw him a bit later, removing the girl from the store and having a harsh talk with her. Not sure if she got fired or whatever.
I also finally bought the watch, but to be honest, as much as I love the watch, wearing it always reminds me of that rude sales person.

Having worked in retail for several years, I can safely say that you should NEVER step behind a service counter in any store much less a boutique. It is a major security and safety breach. Also, a lot of luxury bags now have the alarms sewn into the bags. So be aware of that.

This gives me time to try it on to look at my self 20 times in the mirror to make sure it was something I really wanted. The SA was so happy and Thankful for how nice and patient I was. She told me that , I didn’t have idea how some customers get if they have to wait a few extra minutes. That helps me to have a great relationship with my SA and she will never forget about me just for that. She told me just like that. So, you are soo right.

Love your videos Sophie ! Always so informative and useful. I have worked in Harrods for 10 years, with luxury handbags and all your rules are so on point. I have seen so many overexcited customers, grabing exotic skin or delicate handbags without any thought or care....But I understand them and always approached it with smile, as I remember the feeling, my first time visiting Harrods and seeing all these amazing beautiful things. In my experience, customers who nobody expects, spends the most. They dress casually, without care, they are relaxed and kind. I am always extra nice to someone that I see is shy or too young to purchase anything. Offering to try it on and to take photo of them with the bag. For me its not only about making a sale, it's about whole Harrods experience customer gets, even if she / he is browsing. But again I only ever worked for Harrods and was trained by Harrods and love retail theatre. In my time I had many loyal customers only shopping with me. Inviting to restaurants like Ritz, receiving expensive gifts like jewellery and invitations for visiting foreign countries ( which I never did, but still have their business cards incase lol) I even got proposal for marriage...It was so funny and cute at the same time, as grandfather said I would be perfect match for his grandson.

I feel it's funny how the SAs in these stores think themselves so important as if they are curing cancer. Looking down on everyone who they think won't buy anything. At the end of the day, it's extremely over priced items that sometimes don't even stay in fashion for long and they just work there, exactly how you have your own job. So I would say always enter a store or boutique to enjoy yourself, have a good time, with absolutely no shame or insecurity, but always be kind. Xx

When people come in acting like they’re entitled, I am always less likely to want to help them with anything that they need. Why should I go out of my way for someone who is making my life miserable at the moment? And as a client, I am always just as nice to the workers at TJ Maxx as I am to the SAs in a boutique. Sales, and retail in general, is a tough job and no one deserves to be badly treated.

Thank you for this! I have always felt such anxiety about going into a luxury boutique but your insight on this vid is so reassuring and makes so much sense! “At the end of the day, it’s just a shop/Have fun!” I don’t know why I felt never worthy to go into a luxury shop just to browse and discover, or anxious about needing to impress the SA’s, but you’re right. It’s all just things that we put on ourselves. Going to walk into my first luxury boutique tomorrow now!

3:58 I actually have to give a shoutout to my SA at the San Jose Gucci that I went to. It was another customer being rude to me. I was sitting and taking photos while waiting on my SA and this lady (who cut in line bc she saw someone she knew at the front) started sassing me that I was inconsiderate bc the store was about to close yet I was taking photos wasting ppls time......little did she know, I had already paid and my SA was in the room over bagging my things. I guess my SA overheard the convo bc she comes out with my bag and loudy tells me to stay and take some photos before leaving. I love her for that (and also bc she was super helpful and it felt like shopping with a friend)

I often frequent San Jose Valley Fair mall and went inside Tiffanys. I'm the kind of person who does not like the "luxury experience". I asked my assigned SA if I could please browse quietly by myself and when I'm ready to checkout I'll let her know. She was wonderful, left me alone, but had to stay near me because she was "assigned" to me and rang me up when I was ready. She didn't question my personal life, leisure life, no unnecessary small talk, no persuading me to try on multiple jewelry, no questioning me when I asked for only a dust bag and no brand box or bag because I end up throwing it away anyway.

I remember one of my first times walking into a luxury store. It was Burberry in Las Vegas. I was wearing a tourist outfit - so not too dressy but not messy as I was walking around doing touristy things. However, the SA who served me was so nice and patient that I ended up buying a scarf. She showed me two options and bought the higher priced item. I didn't feel pressured to buy, but her patience and willingness to show mw around the store impressed me enough to spend above my normal budget. It might not have not been the most expensive item, but not so bad from a non fancy dressed tourist.

  • @sheonlydances

About the service: two different stories…
Three years ago I bought my first Burberry trench coat, I have been waiting for this moment for nearly 10 years. The SA was so lovely, I was so nervous… I bought the wrong coat because I didn’t want to „waste his time“ with with asking to compare two different styles. Then a few hours later I called him and asked if I could try on the other trench 😄 The second one was the one for me and I was so happy 😁 . A week later I was sick and I got a hand written message in the mail from the SA, thanking me for the purchase. I was so grateful, it made my day feel less sick. I later came by the store to tell him how special his note was for me.
In Chanel Zurich, Switzerland, I have th feeling the staff isn’t always motivated to help you 100%. I bought a pair of sneakers on Saturday and asked if they had them in another color in my size. They didn’t. So I asked to be notified when my size came in. There was a problem with the digital system and I had the feeling they didn’t put my request in. On Monday I gave them a call to ask if they were able to put down my request- they didn’t put it in. BUT they did have my size. Hmmm… did it get there on Sunday, when stores are closed?
I went to pick up the second pair. Since I wanted to wear the new pair, I asked if they could put in the box the „old“ pair - the one from Saturday. They did, but they didn’t give me the additional shoelaces and the two dust bags for the new pair. I don’t think it was a coincidence, there were different SAs in the store. On Tuesday I picked up the shoelaces and the dust bags.
The earrings: I absolutely disagree about the earrings, especially if you are buying rather expensive or high end earrings. ALWAYS try them on.
My earlobes don’t have symmetrical holes, on the left ear the hole is a bit lower and it always makes stud earrings hang and look droopy and sad 😂. The other problem is the weight of an earring. Tiffany‘s, for example, have quite heave and sturdy stiff, so this also hurts my holes. If I am going to spend thousands of dollars on earrings, you bet I am going to try them on. I have never been denied trying on earrings.

My first luxury bag experience was at Louis Vuitton in Santa Clara, CA about 16 years ago. The SA said it’s was a pleasure to serve people like myself because we saved our money to be able to buy an item and keep it unlike these people with to much money buying a bunch of items just to return later according to him. I finally bought another bag at the same store about a year ago and had another great experience. She was so helpful and brought out a bunch of bags for me to look at and try on in the price range I was requesting. I’ve been lucky had nothing but good experiences with the few stores I’ve purchased at. My worse experience believe it or not was at Prada, the outlet store of all places in Livermore, CA. I guess I didn’t fit the mold for them to be even helped. It’s unfortunate that some of these people judge you before even trying to help you.

The SAs there were so kind and helped me try on bags and answered all of my questions. After I left I couldn't stop thinking why I was so nervous; and you were so right, I made myself feel that way! Here's a good tip: Booking an appointment over the phone will help a ton. That way you can expect to meet an SA that you (somewhat) already know and they can show you what you want. At the end of the day, these are people’s jobs and we need to respect the store the same way we wouldn’t go inside an “employees only” door in a grocery store. Obviously there’s a higher service for high end clients but just store etiquette regardless of what store/shop you’re in should be respected. At the end of the day, any client facing role gets exhausting and the least we can do is have a mutual respect and open communication.

All good advice except for the earring bit. I can understand not trying on costume jewelry, but for any fine jewelry purchase, those should always be tried on for many reasons. The earrings may look terrible on, and if I am going to spend thousands of dollars on a pair of earrings (that I will most likely not be able to return), they better look amazing and hit me in the solar plexus. For example, I cannot wear hoops of any kind. The way that my earring holes are positioned and my ears, the hoops flip to the side and look awful on me. Also, most fine jewelry stores encourage you to try on the piece of jewelry, earrings included. I have never, ever been to a fine jewelry store where I was not allowed to try the jewelry on, again earrings included. If sanitization is a concern, the SA will bring over an alcohol pad and clean the earrings before and after I try them on. And some jewelry looks better in the case than on and vice versa. It has happened many a time for me, that I will fall in love with a piece of jewelry in the case, and it just doesn't look good on me. So, always try on the fine jewelry before buying!

Thank you for this! When I was in Germany last year, my husband and I decided to have a walk around this luxury department store in Munich. For majority of the higher end brands (Dior, Chanel, LV etc), they have security guards standing at the store entrance and that made me so nervous that I decided not to go in despite my husband's encouragement (even though I realllly wanted to get something). I remember wanting to have a look at a particular T&Co ring. The "store" was situated at an open space with display cases. I saw the ring I wanted but freaked out when a very friendly SA approached us. I declined assistance and we left. Communicate with them (what do you like, what is not for you etc.. we cannot read your mind. we can read your body language but not your mind :) , it can make the experience much nicer and easier for all of us.
    - Please, don't go to the store and start to complain about how expensive it is, and start to negotiate the price and get offensive. out of your budget, that's all right but it's not the SA who decide the price tag, you can ask for the manager but the price tag won't disappear.

I’ve been on both sides of the counter so to speak since I worked for Chanel for many years and I have to say all of your comments are on point as well as I very much appreciate you reminding customers not to be rude to the SA’s.
I think one of the reasons that people get nervous going into these shops is similar to why they get nervous going into a luxury car dealership… They are concerned that the sales people will be high pressure and if they are not looking to buy something that day they don’t want to be dismissed or treated poorly.
I simply literally tell sales people that I’m only looking that day but if I have any questions I appreciate their information so that I can find them and in the future I may come back to them… This gives the sales associate some motivation to treat you well even if you’re not buying today.

My opinion is that the merchandise at these high end “luxury” stores isn’t better quality than unbranded items, you are paying for the name. I love to purchase from local craftsmen when traveling and I have found their jewelry and leather items to be unique and superior in craftsmanship,to branded items. I always get compliments on my jewelry and purses, and they are all handmade by local artisans. I have been in luxury stores, just to look around and have never found anything that was unique enough to warrant the high price tag. I will add, that I have never been treated poorly by SA’s when I have been looking in a luxury boutique. They have all been gracious and helpful. I don’t look rich, but that is the case with most people who are truly wealthy. Never feel like you aren’t worthy of being in a luxury store. It’s a store. The salespeople are just like you and if you get treated rudely, turn around and walk out. If you still want the item, buy online. Eventually, there won’t be SA’s if people are continually treated poorly by them.

I was worried as I had heard such horror stories about Chanel SA’s. They couldn’t have been nicer. I was upfront about what I was looking for & they immediately told me they had it in stock but let me look at small & jumbo as well. The only thing was they sort of hid the bag & they explained that if certain people saw it they would demand it too. As soon as I tried the bag on in the mirror two ladies rushed up, berating my SA & tried to grab the bag off me. I obviously wasn’t letting go! Their SA caught up with them & removed them from me & my SA had to go & tell them I had made a special order which obviously I hadn’t. Apparently they were notorious bag resellers. Was a very eventful but lovely experience. The SA gave me his card, told me to come & see him on first floor next time, gave me drinks & a magazine with my purchase & I couldn’t have been happier with the experience &, of course my lovely new bag. To round off a special week I also purchased an old Porsche Boxter. MY husband also has a 911 but I don’t feel comfortable driving it, in case I damage it but the Boxter is just great & will be a fun second car for me. All in all a great week, although I did feel guilty considering what was going on in the world. Even though I have made donations since that feeling still lingers.

Sounds like you had a great time. Enjoy your new car. You have to enjoy life when you have the opportunity to do so. EVerything these days are so uncertain. Take your joy where you can get it. I babysit my daughter's 2 year old puppy this week so she could go on vacation. It was hard work but I had so much fun and heartwarming moments. Life is going to keep happening. You just have to remember to grab your happiness.💕

Great experience and thank you for sharing! I too have a wonderful collection of just about every bag EXCEPT Chanel (& Hermes) I’m a bit nervous as well. It’s a feeling of arrival to be able to make that purchase. Such a timeless classic that has been carried by all the most stylish ladies of high fashion. I’m curious where you went to meet that lovely SA. Wear it well my fellow fabulous female… I envision you driving your convertible Boxster with the wind whipping through your hair exiting with the Chanel over your shoulder. I have the Lexus convertible as my fun car and recently purchased a jaguar SUV… Now I just need my bag… Why are we afraid? I guess it’s like a coming of age or stature?

Enjoy your fun car & hopefully the bag will come soon although it sounds like you already have a lovely collection x

You say to be polite and don’t be rude and I know these things. I’m a very soft spoken person who wants to enjoy the transaction. I’ve asked about what wine was for, on the way out of a salon, and been told it was for customers, with nary an “oops” or “I’m sorry” for not being offered any during my appointment.
Part of my problem is not being well-regulated when I get annoyed or agitated. If the clerk says something to me that seems rude, I’m not sure what to say. Sometimes, I think it’s best to leave, but I want to audibly say something like, “that sounded like an insult, so i won’t shop here” and then leave. I haven’t shopped at a retail store in a long time. The last few times I was with someone and the cashier kept interrupting my conversation with the person with me. That wasn’t an upscale boutique but it was just another set of bad experiences that makes me happier to be online, or just a silent shopper if I have to go somewhere.
Thank you for your guidance. If I ever go, I’ll do my best.

I never had a bad experience as costumer in any luxury boutique especially in Brazil, they are so nice and it’s a great expectation even in Hermes that people always hav an issue on, actually Hermes here is the best Hermes and Vuitton it’s the best of all costumer service, I went several times to the boutique till I decide to get a bag and they were amazing every single time.

I was a luxury SA for 4 and a half years and from experience there are reasons why there are cranky SAs. 1. Management isn’t treating them right or there are internal conflicts, 2. SAs have to deal with crazy clients and have possibly gone through the whole day with no sales and they have lost patience, 3. They work long hours and are just tired so yes, Sophie is right. Being nice to an SA goes a long way and it goes both ways. This isn’t to say that the SAs don’t care about their jobs or don’t take it seriously but there are also other aspects to the job that aren’t enjoyable. It doesn’t mean that they don’t value clients!

I wish I had seen this video before we went for our first luxury purchases with my friends this Wednesday. Such great advices ! We've been to Dior and the SA was not so concerned about us, he was pissed off and you could see it. I bought a ring anyway but I shouldn't. We had an appointment at Louis Vuitton and the SA was lovely ! If you go to Antwerp, go see Kitty, she's nice ! My friend bought her first LV bag. I hope she feels the way I felt when I first purchased from a store (it was Hermes), I was so content and proud of myself to achieve my very first luxury purchase. It felt amazing ! We should always feel that way when buying from a luxury store.

Great advise. I went to Harvey Nicks in Manchester a few years ago and a sales assistant stood in front of me, looked me up and down then turned his back on me and started to chat to another assistant, that reaction made me feel like he'd decided I wasn't good enough to be in there. I went on to Selfridges and the assistant at Chanel was amazing, so helpful. So don't be put off by one snooty assistants - they have the problem, there are plenty of other lovely sales assistants out there.

Love this video! Also don’t think that you are better then everyone in the store. Ask for all the bags and walk out without anything. Had this lady next to me in the Chanel shop last year. She looked at me as I was not worthy of the attention from the SA while I was just there to pick up a bag I was waitlisted for. She was a terrible person to me and to the SA. Her kid touched everything and was tossing Chanel shoes in the air. She left empty handed and I walked out with a Classic Flap bag. You can’t always see if people are going to buy something and that’s not a big deal at all. But always be polite and make your kids behave. You can’t throw expensive shoes up in the air🙈

My personal peeves were …….customers who shopped with you for 364 days a year then dropped £20k on your day off…..never forgiven.
I stand in this store 10 hrs a day don’t try to tell me you bought this here but lost your receipt.
But if you aren’t nice no customer wants your help so ignore the manners and try your best with everyone. This method got me paid holidays(honestly true),concert tickets, gossip and fabulous Christmas gifts.❤️❤️

My friend was going back to her home country and wanted to buy a handbag before leaving. She asked me to come with her to Dior, once there she decided on a lady Dior but was not sure of what size. As the SA was showcasing the different sizes she wanted to know why one was priced higher then another. I explained to her how they are made and the differences in leather, the SA was impressed. Then I almost joined the choir invisible when she asked if they were "Going to have a sale." followed by "Will this be discounted?" I am very carful who I join whilst shopping at luxury brands.

I disagree about not trying on earrings as it does make a huge difference once they are on the earlobe. I never had any jewelry boutique say no. Earrings have always been sanitized before and after. I even had SA clearly suggesting different pieces once they saw that the one I was trying were not " the one".

A friend and I were in Rome and did a “luxury store” crawl to browse see what it was like; just the Italian ones. Didn’t put on an act, went in our normal clothing.
Most were friendly. Only one ignored us when there were ritzier customers to tend to.
But Gucci was an absolute party. They gave us stuff to try on and we had a mini fashion show. Ended up registering with them for the hell of it even though we couldn’t actually afford anything. Best SAs.

In September 2020 I moved to the company I work at now and it had only been about a month and a half of me working their; one weekday afternoon this lady came in and was dismissive to my greeting but did comment “wow the store looks so different, I haven’t been here in a while” *the location I work at had a renovation at the end of 2019 right before covid* When I asked if there was anything I could help with she said something along the lines of “I don’t need you asking me if I need anything, I’m just looking!” with the worse attitude. She then grabbed shoes from our wall and started throwing them to floor to see what they looked like on and left the displays on the floor demanding for her sizes. When our support member brought out the shoes from the back she grabbed them from me and started recklessly trying them on. I gave her a second to check them out and figure out if the sizing was correct. When she told me she needed a half size up on one of the pairs, I assumed I could put back the original size I had brought out for her. I started to put the shoe back in the box and she snarked at me saying “did i say you could take that back? do you not want a sale?” and I just left the box on the couch with her. After getting her correct shoe size for the two pairs of shoes she was going to purchase she was interested in purchasing a bag. She looked around and found a bag she liked, I went up to her and told her we could look in the back to see if we had a new piece so she wouldn’t have to take the display, when it was brought out she complained it too to long and said “wow, things have sure changed around here since I was last here, not sure if I’ll be back”, she made me feel horrible and I almost teared up from the way she spoke to me. Her tone and attitude were uncalled for when I was simply trying to service her.

I work in luxury, and I think that some clients come in with a bad attitude thinking that it will get them better service. Unfortunately it's almost always the opposite. Being polite will 9 times out of 10 get you politeness in return. Most CAs will try to give you the best service they can, as they want you to buy and they want you to give them good feedback if you receive a survey..

We were on holiday in Corsica and went to the small, but beautiful Chanel shop. There was a lady who went through the clothes using both her hands and shoving them to one side, if she was not interested in the particular clothing item. The staff there, immediately stepped in and asked her whether she is going to buy anything and what does she have in mind? She couldn’t answer and said: “I’m just looking”. Obviously that is not the correct answer in a shop like Chanel, so they blatantly asked her to leave. I thought that was a good thing.

Since the pandemic lv in the states has been doing appointments and gate keeping at the door with their iPad. They ask if you have certain bags you want to see and they will look them up and tell you if they are in the store or not before you even step inside, and while I find that helpful, sometimes I would like to just brows around. At Christmas I decided not to go in because when they look up the items on the iPad they are not available and it doesn't feel as welcoming as in the past. Once your inside the SA will show you bags or make suggestions but I suggest anyone new to LV to compile a list of 5 or 6 bags you want to see prior to your visit.
