I did overnight from St. Petersburg to Moscow. It was straight out of the 1940s. But still nice. And they had a full meal (breakfast) for you and wool blankets and clean sheets. Cabins more spacious as well. This seemed doable, but not nice at all. The cockroaches would have sent me over the edge. I couldn't have slept.

i just did that train (Grand Express, Grand class cabin) about a month ago, both ways. the cabin was nice, nothing real special about it. the attendants spoke almost no english and translated with google translate on their phones, but were super friendly and helpful. overall it was a good time.
i've also done the London to Edinburgh Caledonian Sleeper. about the same except for the no english part :)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but soft bed and hard bed is basically 1st/2nd class sleeper . it doesn't mean the bed is any harder really, just that you have less space since there are 6 instead of 4 beds. The thing to really avoid is hard Seat. you are basically travelling on a park bench

In Vietnam, people don't normally use toilet paper. They have that little shower spray next to the toilet so you can clean yourself off. When I went to visit my extended family, I went to a supermarket and bought some toilet paper there. OMG, it is scented!! I love it.

We took the train from Hanoi to Saigon (36 hours) about 2 weeks ago. The short story is - our train hit and killed a rural villager, we got destroyed by bed bugs, the AC never got the cabin below 85 Fahrenheit, and our roommates trashed the room too. It was not the easiest couple of days!
Also when our train hit the man, his body came to rest under our train car. We watched the engineers pull his mangled body out from under the train (it was very bad), set him on a tarp, hand him off to the other villagers with some paperwork, and 5 minutes after ending his life we were on our way. At the next stop, another worker hosed the blood off of the train car as the new passengers boarded...

Also another tip is to be very wary of your stuff. I went on a sleeper train in thailand and woke up to find someone going through my backpack...so be careful if you go for the eye mask/ear plug option!

  • @kellyjohnson3617

I took a sleeper train from Bangkok to Trang. I do recommend it snd your room is really deluxe. Our train was just seats that turned into upper and lower berths. I brought my own sheets as it were. A sarong I used as a seat and shawl as a blanket. I covered the pillow with one of my tee shirts. It was fine. The restrooms were a different issue. A hole in the floor you per over. And a hose to rinse yourself off with. So the floor was slippery. And with the train shaking I feared my foot would go down the potty hole. Lol. But it was fine cuz Trang was amazing. We went camping on a private island. Incredible. I rented a cabin. Not fancy but nice for our group to have a private shower. I’d go again in a heart beat. But remember to bring grippy shoes and my own TP for sure. And small towels or cloth napkins to dry my hands with cuz they don’t have those things there. Napkins are easier to wash our snd dry in the sink

11:09 Back in the 1980s when I used to travel around Europe it was generally recommended that you packed a sleeping bag liner. I'm not sure if you can buy them any more, but it would be simply a case of asking somebody with a sewing machine to sew a large sheet into a sleeping bag liner and then use it wherever you are (check for roaches and scorpions before use!). A liner could be rolled up real small and takes up no room.
I kinda like the fact that you guys are finding things a bit rough (not sure about the roaches though). When I was 19 this was how I found some parts of southern Europe and North Africa. I wouldn't fancy it now (I now like my hotels if I can afford them) but boy was it fun when we slummed it back then. Back then the basic survival kit was, sleeping bag liner, water purification tablets (tasted foul), malaria tablets and typhoid injections, bug spray, and some money sewn into the hem of some clothes.
I guess as long as you are well prepared, you can survive anything.

Ah, Hoi An, the place of my dreams. When in Hoi An try and locate Baby Mustard, a very nice restaurant out in the fields 2 miles to the northwest. It's a very nice place for lunch or dinner and they use produce from their own vegetable garden. And try and spend some time with the H'Mong Sisters right at the beach. We went there for an hour, but ended up to spend all day enjoying the sun, the drinks and the food.

I’m not sure if you’ve already taken Amtrak: America’s passenger train, if you have- great! If not, when you come back to the states, you should definitely start in California and take Amtrak’s California Zepher to Chicago. Or start east with the Capitol Limited or Cardinal to Chicago. That’s the hub, and you can branch out from there. I’ve traveled Amtrak 27 times, and it will be worth the money, the views, and you get clean sheets with fresh toilet paper. Also, there is a lounge car and dining car. It’s amazing. Happy Travels.

We were in Nashville, went to the station to see if we could catch a train to Memphis. We were told that the trains only go North/South, not East/ West. Erm!!. Never thought we would find a worse train service than the UK but we did. Ended up catching the Greyhound bus, which was full of junkies and bums, very scary.

In 2008 we took an overnight 25 hour train ride from Beijing to Hong Kong. We had a private cabin with seats and two upper birth beds. But the best part was a private American style bathroom. The only problem was they only took Chinese currency and no credit cards. A great adventure but you miss too much stuck on the train.

I loved this video! I just did this train ride from Ninh Binh zu Hué 2 weeks ago and had to grin at how similar my experience was! I was super happy to have taken a silk sleeping bag with my and an eye mask and ear plugs. I also got woken up all night by the announcements (I found out in the morning it can be just turned off hahah) and generally found it really disturbing to hear people scream around at all times of the day and night without any sense of quiet 😆.
Anyways, really liked this video :)

As a teenager my parents and I (and sometimes also grandparents) used to travel by night trains. We used to put the car on the train as well. Mostly it was from my home country Belgium to the South of France, or to Spain. It's fun, but indeed, not easy to get some good sleep on those. Have to say though, the ones we went on were way nicer than on your trip. And that was some 30 years ago already.

Thank you so much @Endless Adventure for that “Sleeper Train 🚂 “ video. I always wanted to know what it was like to do that now you have satisfied my curiosity, Great job!!! BTW sharing a sleeper car must have been a weird experience to sleep with people you don’t know.

Haha! I traveled from Saigon to Hanoi a few years ago. Your trip by train made me glad I took a plane! I was getting motion sickness just watching you. 🤢 My favorite experience in Vietnam….. the food! 😍
