Hi #NonstopEurotrip please come to india and try Vande Bharat Express India’s fastest train and there are many other luxurious trains in India which u can try. Please come to India.
Refreshed memory of my time in Vietnam as an Army Helicopter Pilot on March 29, 1972. Last flight there was Danang to north of Dong Ha (C-4 outpost) and Hue Citadel, and back to Danang (Camp Horn) on the Danang River. My, how times have changed! It always was and always will be a beautiful country with hospitable people and places.
By 1975. I was only 15 yo. After I came to USA in 1981. And by the time I worked for public schools in Virginia. My supervisor and lot of bus drivers all were soldiers stationed in Vietnam . They told me about the war. About how they fought in VN. I was really appreciated what American soldiers did for Vietnamese like me. Thanks for your service.
Never really been a fan of sleeper trains, with inconvenient departure and arrival times rarely coinciding with hotel check in and check out times. To me, the beauty of train travel is to be able to look out of the window and watch the world go by, not something you can do at night. And to be able to have a conversation with fellow travelers while sharing a snack or a drink. I have had some wonderful times traveling by train, and met some fantastic people, some of whom have remained life long friends. I enjoy your videos and please keep them coming.
Yeah that might be true if you’re on holiday and enjoying yourself. When one is on a tight schedule (maybe a conference from 09-17 then dinner) and you want to maximise time at home, a sleeper is amazing. Or maybe if you want to spend the whole day with your family the day before you need to work, then hop on the sleeper train after dinner and some films and come to the city in time. And long sleepers can make dreadful journeys decent, like any day train over 12 hours would just be painful but with a sleeper it’s possible with just a few hours of “awake time”.
I have slept very well on sleeper trains...not so well sitting in a seat all night. It is nice to get away from other passengers sometimes. For example, one passenger ahead of me several seats was coughing continuously and very loudly. He seemed to have strep throat. He was not covering his mouth. I went up and offered him a mask. He was uninterested. The conductor on Amtrak, the American train service, said Amtrak policy prevented him from saying anything. Many elderly persons were seated around this fellow. I found an empty seat a few cars down and, thankfully, the conductors did not bother me even though it was not my assigned seat.
You are so right. I love sleeping in a quiet room on smooth riding train, but night train departures and arrivals don't mesh with hotel check in and check out times. My biggest night train complaint is the lack of a bar car where passengers can socialize over a chilled glass of champagne.🥂
I was stationed in Danang during the Vietnam War in 1969. A lot of my buddies said they wanted to revisit Vietnam when the war was over, but I didn't want to until now. Thanks for sharing your train trip. The room is nice but I don't like the dingy toilet.

We traveled north from Ho Chi Min City to Nha Trang on service SE22 in 2016. While the trip was less than 8 hours, we selected a sleeper compartment to ensure a little comfort and privacy. Looking at your video, the layout of your VIP compartment seemed similar to what we were in during our trip, although with none of the extra amenities that the VIP service has to offer. It also sounded as though your VIP carriage had much better soundproofing than on our trip - possibly double-glazed windows have been fitted. We agree that a rail trip along the length of Vietnam is a great way to really see the countryside and see more of the rural Vietnamese lifestyle. A great video;
14:38-15:25 My hometown station (Đông Hà station). This video is nostalgic because it reminded me of the moment I stood in front of the door and saw my family standing in front of the small station. I've also been on the SE1 train for 5 months, the quality and the scenery are great!
7:23 That elevates the price up to 5,614,334 Vietnamese Dong , that is equal to €219.58, $231.32 or £188.51 per coach. How much can a Vietnamese earn in a month?
That price is a bit more than minimum wage in Hanoi or Saigon. There's people earning more but also many that earn less because they're informally employed.
An average waiter in a family run restaurant makes around 4-5 mils a month. College students doing part time job as waiters in Cafes make around 3-4 mils a month. Beautiful scenery. The train service is very similar to an Amtrak’s roomette slumber coach. I would say the Vietnamese version is a better bargain in terms of price per mile, although Amtrak does include more meals instead of just breakfast and light snacks. Vietnamese equipment appears to be very dated, and cleanliness is probably more of an issue for bathrooms rather than on Amtrak trains, although I’ve encountered some rather grimy bathrooms on Amtrak.
@@NonstopEurotrip I had much of different experience for Amtrak, to me, the average Vietnamese style trains are the kind of default old unfancy style train for me... Wow thanks for your vieos...How beautiful our planet Earth is, we don't know what we have, we don't appreciate the wonderful nature that is all around us, nor the works of our ancestors... It makes me really sad. On the other hand, when I see such a video, the train ride is like Alice through the looking glass...Vietnam is beautiful! And I believe that as a species we have hope, and with us our Earth!
Another great video, thank you so much for your useful content! Your cabin looked nice but I have to admit it seems a bit overpriced to me. The beds looked super comfy though!
it has an element of luxury which would cost much more in many other countries... I mean, obviously it's priced towards the foreigner (not sure if these tickets will be 40% of price for the locals, on many trains they are), but, that's less than the cabin price on the Penzance or the Caledonian if I remember, an individual cabin in China will also set you back around thesame for only a slightly longer journey.
I did the same trip from Hanoi to HCMC with a stop in Hue in 2015 - an excellent way to people watch and experience how locals use the line. And incredible value for money at around USD40 for a thousand kilometre trip was incredible value for money. I'm guessing the Violette service didn't yet exist then, but from your video, the 4-berth cabins and seating in the the train look like they've had an upgrade since.
Took a train from Hanoi to Haiphong and back. I tried to get seats facing forward but because of some error in translation somehow they gave us reversed seats. Luckily for us the other passengers were willing to swap.
Funny coincidence, but I myself returned from Vietnam just two weeks ago - and guess what I did there😁. However I did not the luxury stuff, but the real deal instead, 4 bed shared compartment on the whole line all the way down to Saigon. Also the 22:15 departure from Hanoi, as it has both good departure and arrival times. Two nights of surprisingly good sleep😎 On a side note: yes, the locos are capable of doing 120km/h, but do they ever reach it? I've never seen the train go faster than 80km/h, whenever I checked it.

Thinking should I fly from Saigon to Da Nang. Trains are good to see a different part of a city or country. Curtains would be better than blinds banging around while the train shakes.
Cool video did that train stop at Da Nang .and what train was it you were on going to be over there in August/September and want to do the train from Hanoi to da nang your in put would be a great help cheers Neville Martin thanks in advance
Memories revisited Tq, 1997 train hard sleeper Hanoi to Hue, 3 aluminium shelves each side of compartment. I'd top left a VN male top right. 4 Vietnamese war widows had the 4 bottom shelves. I didnt get food enroute as part of my ticket missing, the lovely ladies went after the food trolly, brought me food. Next day in Hue I was sitting kerb side enjoying the traffic of traders going & coming from big mkt just over the girder bridge. The 4 lady war widows in beautiful velvet burgendy Aoi Da's walking other side of the street Hung Vuong waved. 🚂 Hue to Danang spectstuclur scenery. HCMC to Na Trang very plessant sleeper train.
Yes Tq some great memories of my early visits to Viet Nam. 1996 took local bus to Da Nang 2$, got invited to wedding. Bus stopped a few Ks outside Da Nang, hitched lift on M'cycle. The hotel I'd booked run by Viet Q, returned from Paris, he horrified at my means of travel. I was closely followed by plain clothes police, a female officer asked me if I'd like to go dancing? Return to HCMC was in tourist mini bus 20$. Same route same stops.
I have seen some videos on Vietnam Railways and notice, with chinese help, some lines are being converted to standard gauge. Is the line Standard or Narrow gauge ?
Thank you for travelling,I have some more inforamtion for you -D19E locomotive on the video was built by CSR Ziyang (China),the first 40 locos was built in China and then transported to Vietnam, the last 40 locos was assembled in Gia Lam train factory (Vietnam),the head design based on a DMU operates in Malaysia -The SE1 is the fastest express in the North-South railway,it tooks about 32 hours for 1726km
I had the pleasure several years ago of travelling from HCMC (Saigon) to Danang & Hue to Hanoi on the train. I booked it several months ahead choosing a lower bed in the 4 bed room! I was very pleased with everything much as you had. I never knew that this Viollet special service car existed! After seeing your compartment, price & amenities I feel that the 4 bedroom compartment was a super deal. To be the private(2 bed room) was a waste of money. Also, being in a 4 bed compartment I had the pleasure of interacting with the Vietnamese people, my roommates!
Great video and thanks for posting - I will be finally travelling to Vietnam In june for my belated bf bday gift 🙂 no thanks to covid! - If we want to travel Hanoi to Da Nang , would you say stay over in Hue for a couple of days and if so would we need a ticket to Hue and then another from Hue to Da Nang? 😃OR should we just fly Hanoi - Da Nang?
There did not seem to be actual seats in the compartment. So, when not sleeping, do you just have to sit on the bed? Could get uncomfortable quickly. Nice trip but, as you mentioned, a bit expensive.
Nice one but even though I love sleeper trains and how they serve the country the lack of showers and although they had a sink in the toilets I don’t think I’d feel very clean until I actually got to a hotel and a shower which kinda defeats my idea of sleeper train travel , I’d like to use the train as a travelling hotel so once off the train onwards to explore the next point of interest
Because there's so much water you can bring with you on a train, it's something very heavy, unstable to store in large amount and most people only be on the train for a few hours and not a full journey of 35 hours.
What's the fare difference between this and first class in the standard train? This doesn't seem all that much better than the Vietnamese Railways-operated stock since they also offer air conditioned sleeper cars.
This train looks an interesting journey - but I've just watched another video on the same train reviewing from a different perspective, they guys are in a 6 berth car, the facilities are much more authentic and I'd suggest you check for yourself before booking a cheaper option.
Looks all very civilized and not a all "primitive", like the dining section. I like the Egyptian model where tourists pay 400% more for the tickets than the Egyptians. I think that's fair.
Sorry for the late comment - watched it last night, but could not comment 1st. Afraid of going off-tangent that time... Back to the video: Hooray for sleeper trains! However, based on your explanation, the very high price is due to comfort (bed comfort), but no dining car or on-board meal service - yikes!! Great scenery too! Now for the off-tangent part: OMG, couldn't believe you met Thibault (Simply Railway) in South Korea - am following both of you! Are you still in SK now?
Good job on the video. I would want a private room. Lots of snacks and drinks, that's good. I would have the window open as much as possible. I would have liked to see the dining car. I would love to see Vietnam. One of my nieces has been to Vietnam.Greetings from Canada.
Just a little feedback on the videos… 1. Very informative and thoughtful. 2. Less is more when adding text. You can reduce the amount of words easily by half and get your thoughts out. Thank you for the videos. They are well done!
Although maximum speed can reach 100 km/h, average speed is just as you calculated. Here are some reasons: - The rail is single tract. Train has to stop many times to give way for opposite trains. The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh railway is the busiest route of Vietnam; at least 12 passenger trains operate daily plus many freight trains. - Narrow gauge rail cannot support higher speed.-
I think you would enjoy the New Delhi-Trivandrum Rajdhani as part of the landscape would look similar. However, be warned, India is a massive country, and it takes 2.5 day journey for a 2000 mile trip across the subcontinent. En route, you cross several biomes, from the subtropical plains in Delhi, to the semi arid landscape in Gujarat, to the lush forests along the konkan coast. Bedding and Food is included with your ticket, and I'd recommend First class if you dont want to share, or AC 2 tier if you are ok with sharing. You also witness multiple locomotive changes along the way, if that's your thing.
@@NonstopEurotrip Great. What time of the year ? Summer (May-July) in the northern part of India can be unusually hot and dry (40+C for weeks on end), so be prepared for that. In addition, be extra careful with your items if you are using local trains. For a lot of long distance trains, the opportunity of theft is lower in First class or AC 2 tier as these coaches are typically isolated from rest of the train. But this is not the case for local services.
A minor point, but it is not Hannoi, it is more correctly spelt and spoken as Ha Noi, but most outside of Vietnam use the Hanoi option. If you bought both tickets, did you get two girls included?
My wife and I have just booked in a 4 bed soft cabin for Hanoi- Hue in January. Much more expensive than flying to Da Nang but we wanted to experience something different. Looking forward to it!!

Great trip, and yes welcome to Vietnam. Something I can get from Railway in Vietnam are (Correct me if I wrong): in some places, there are single track section, especially in Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh route. Also at this route, the track will closer to coastal area of South China Sea. Talking about Currency, well yeah, there's similarities between my currency country and Vietnamese Dong. If it's reach millions of Rupiah or Dong for transport, it considered as expensive.
Hey is it possible you can send me a DM on insta or an email (nonstopeurotrip@gmail.com) I have some Indonesian questions from a friend who's planning a trip 🙂🙏🏻
Train trips sound romantic until you go on the Vietnamese version. They don't change the bed/pillow covers. They try to sneak other people into your room for extra cash. The train is slow, rough and generally not a good experience. I'd recommend go for the cheapest option if you want to "experience" the local offering. At least you can get off wherever and jump on an airplane
I live in Southern Vietnam, while my grandparents live in Northern Vietnam. When I was a kid (late 1990s to early 2000s), I traveled with my mom on a full train journey from Sai Gon to Ha Noi to visit them every year. The trip took roughly 40 hours, which meant we spent 2 nights on the train. We often booked the 6-berth cabin because it's cheaper than the 4-berth one but still more comfortable than coach. Food and water was included in the ticket back then. Since air travel has developed in Vietnam, we instead take a flight as it takes only 2 hours and doesn't cost much if you book low cost airlines. Now, train ticket is expensive, the service is bad and the cabin is not clean, so people only take short trips or overnight trips; nobody takes a full journey anymore. Why would you suffer for 30+ hours on a shaky train when you could fly with the same or less cost? However, the view through Central Vietnam is breath-taking! Maybe that's the only perk of train travel in our country.
@@NonstopEurotrip Actually it is a rhetorical question but I agree with you. My dream is to travel across Europe by train. In Vietnam, there was a TV series in which they traveled by train only from Vietnam to China, Russia, Finland etc... and finally to England. It was very inspiring.

Thinking should I fly from Saigon to Da Nang. Trains are good to see a different part of a city or country. Curtains would be better than blinds banging around while the train shakes.
Enjoyed to the fullest! Great vlog! 😍
Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
Great trip report
Cool video did that train stop at Da Nang .and what train was it you were on going to be over there in August/September and want to do the train from Hanoi to da nang your in put would be a great help cheers Neville Martin thanks in advance
Yes, and there's multiple trains per day
I like the Network SouthEast livery.
😂😂😂
Thank you for this very helpful RUclips video.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow sounds like an experience ☺️
99% of track is narrow gauge
@@NonstopEurotrip Thanls For our reply much apprecited
Lovely video 😊 planning to visit in April or May and this looks like a good way to travel.
It really is! 😃
Awesome Videos, you living the dream ;)
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for the interesting train ride and picturesque views. Btw, I wonder what food is offered in the cafeteria coach ?
Just basic rice meals and drinks. I'll show it in my next Vietnam video 📷
Hard to understand why train tickets are so expensive there when everything else is very cheap. Maybe there are very large discounts for locals
Aimed at tourists. You can get a cheap bed as I showed.
This is the luxury carriage aimed specifically at Western tourists. Normal carriages are cheaper and pretty much the same. Its a sliw ride though!
Same price for locals or foreigners😢
Thanks for the video.. if u Don't mind try Taiwan high speed train!
Next year I will 😀
A sleeping train 😴 and the exotic, tropical landscape of vietnam
😍😍😍
Thank you for travelling,I have some more inforamtion for you
-D19E locomotive on the video was built by CSR Ziyang (China),the first 40 locos was built in China and then transported to Vietnam, the last 40 locos was assembled in Gia Lam train factory (Vietnam),the head design based on a DMU operates in Malaysia
-The SE1 is the fastest express in the North-South railway,it tooks about 32 hours for 1726km
Thanks for the info! 😊
@@NonstopEurotrip And you can call the D19E as the CKD7F locomotive
Hi, are the prices per bed or per cabin? did you pay £100 for 2 beds or 1? thanks
That's the price for both beds in the cabin
I had the pleasure several years ago of travelling from HCMC (Saigon) to Danang & Hue to Hanoi on the train. I booked it several months ahead choosing a lower bed in the 4 bed room! I was very pleased with everything much as you had. I never knew that this Viollet special service car existed! After seeing your compartment, price & amenities I feel that the 4 bedroom compartment was a super deal. To be the private(2 bed room) was a waste of money. Also, being in a 4 bed compartment I had the pleasure of interacting with the Vietnamese people, my roommates!
Yes I agree. If doing it again I'd go for one bed in a 4 bedroom 🙂
Personally I'd take the train, and Hue is a must see. Absolutely stunning 🥰
Yoo this is awesome!! 😍😎
Thank you ☺️
Are you have a plan to visit Indonesia?/here in Java island we have massive railways And also the upcoming High speed rail next year
I will. Next year 🙏🏻😃
When leaving the station, are the taxi's outside the station trustworthy to get you to the hotel? Do you book in advanced? Use Grab?
I'd always use grab
Use public transport if it exists, or walk if less than 1.5 km.
There did not seem to be actual seats in the compartment. So, when not sleeping, do you just have to sit on the bed? Could get uncomfortable quickly. Nice trip but, as you mentioned, a bit expensive.
The beds fold up into seats
Beautiful train..only wish we had this kind of service here in the States..
Wouldn’t it be a better trip during the day, seeing the country?
I did that on the way back 😄
Very nicely presented. Thank you
So nice of you 😊
Just curious, was your sleeper car equipped with air conditioning? Thx for nice video!
It was, yes!
Awesome! Keep up the good work!!!
I'll try my best 😃
Nice one but even though I love sleeper trains and how they serve the country the lack of showers and although they had a sink in the toilets I don’t think I’d feel very clean until I actually got to a hotel and a shower which kinda defeats my idea of sleeper train travel , I’d like to use the train as a travelling hotel so once off the train onwards to explore the next point of interest
I find showers on a train very much a gimmick. Usually crap or cold or dirty. Anyway when we arrived I went straight to my hotel for a swim anyway 😂
Because there's so much water you can bring with you on a train, it's something very heavy, unstable to store in large amount and most people only be on the train for a few hours and not a full journey of 35 hours.
Some Australian sleeper trains are the same, stops at small towns in the middle of the night
Australia has trains?!
@@NonstopEurotrip Yes! Their luxury trains are pretty famous.
Though I'm not too sure on the intercity metro services.
@@micashen it was sarcasm 😉
What's the fare difference between this and first class in the standard train? This doesn't seem all that much better than the Vietnamese Railways-operated stock since they also offer air conditioned sleeper cars.
50% more
I went on the reunification express from Saigon to Hanoi 20 years back. It certainly looks a lot smarter nowadays.
Absolutely Mike 😊
Wonderful trip and video Nonstop Asiatrip!
Hopefully to be experienced by myself as well, I always wanted to visit Vietnam 😁
Thanks Félix Türkiyetrip. Btw I still can't buy those tickets 😭
This train looks an interesting journey - but I've just watched another video on the same train reviewing from a different perspective, they guys are in a 6 berth car, the facilities are much more authentic and I'd suggest you check for yourself before booking a cheaper option.
I've done the cheaper one before and it's a whole different experience!
Looks all very civilized and not a all "primitive", like the dining section. I like the Egyptian model where tourists pay 400% more for the tickets than the Egyptians. I think that's fair.
😬😬😬
great landscape views!
Absolutely 🤗
Отличная поездка!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great! Very interesting! Will there be more videos about Vietnamese trains and Vietnam itself?
Yes! There will be 🤗
Luxury 5 star vietnam train..
Awesome train report. Worth a visit for sure. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub! 😎
In Bangkok now. But I've been friends with Thibault for a few years now. See you TOMORROW for my video premiere, normal time. 2 a week in December 😊
What a beautiful trip. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Joe 😄
Good job on the video. I would want a private room. Lots of snacks and drinks, that's good. I would have the window open as much as possible. I would have liked to see the dining car. I would love to see Vietnam. One of my nieces has been to Vietnam.Greetings from Canada.
I'll show the dining car on a similar train in my next Vietnam video. It's really NOT that nice tho 😂
Just a little feedback on the videos… 1. Very informative and thoughtful. 2. Less is more when adding text. You can reduce the amount of words easily by half and get your thoughts out.
Thank you for the videos. They are well done!
Thanks for the tips! 🙏🏻☺️
670km takes 12.7h is 53km/h on average
Because maths 😆
Although maximum speed can reach 100 km/h, average speed is just as you calculated. Here are some reasons:
- The rail is single tract. Train has to stop many times to give way for opposite trains. The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh railway is the busiest route of Vietnam; at least 12 passenger trains operate daily plus many freight trains.
- Narrow gauge rail cannot support higher speed.-
A pleasant trip! Excepting the not-so-great toilet...
Indeed 🥺
Thanks for the information. We already have a trip planned to India next year 👍🏻🙂
@@NonstopEurotrip Great. But this is not the case for local services.

like the sleeper car...but the seats in the main cabin looked kinda comfy, too + we will save $200 to boot !
A long time in a seat 🤣
@@NonstopEurotrip yah, but i can then order the "top shelf" booze in Hanoi. Mr. Cheapie, here :))
A minor point, but it is not Hannoi, it is more correctly spelt and spoken as Ha Noi, but most outside of Vietnam use the Hanoi option. If you bought both tickets, did you get two girls included?
I mean, if we're being picky... It's Hà Nội
@@NonstopEurotrip No, that's being totally pedantic. Hardly anyone knows those stupid phonetic symbols.
My wife and I have just booked in a 4 bed soft cabin for Hanoi- Hue in January. Much more expensive than flying to Da Nang but we wanted to experience something different. Looking forward to it!!

Vietnam railroad will only get better partnership with China. SE Asia will be connected through HSR. That will be a big economic boost for all nations in that region
It's the best looking sleeper train i've evet seen. It should be the best for that amount.
And something else. I'm unfamiliar with youtube uploading functions. If there's an option to translate the title, you'd better turn it off, hence it gives ridiculously bad translations.
Thank you! Which language are you referring to?

Great trip, and yes welcome to Vietnam. Something I can get from Railway in Vietnam are (Correct me if I wrong): in some places, there are single track section, especially in Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh route. Also at this route, the track will closer to coastal area of South China Sea. Talking about Currency, well yeah, there's similarities between my currency country and Vietnamese Dong. If it's reach millions of Rupiah or Dong for transport, it considered as expensive.
Yes there's lots of single track places. But not many trains so 🤷🏻♂️ Glad you enjoyed the video 😃

I’ve seen several reviews of Vietnam trains complaining of cockroaches in the sleepers and coaches. What is your experience?
Nothing of the such
@@NonstopEurotrip 👍
Train trips sound romantic until you go on the Vietnamese version.
They don't change the bed/pillow covers. They try to sneak other people into your room for extra cash.
The train is slow, rough and generally not a good experience.
I'd recommend go for the cheapest option if you want to "experience" the local offering. At least you can get off wherever and jump on an airplane
No problems like that here.
Come to Indonesia n enjoy Indonesian train
Soon I will ☺️
I live in Southern Vietnam, while my grandparents live in Northern Vietnam.
Because I enjoy trains, and I make train videos. It's about the journey, not the destination 🙃
@@thehungnguyen2186 A dream journey of mine is Stockholm - Bangkok on a train. It was doable before this last stupid war. Maybe one day it will be doable again.
Vietnam can be proud of itself, without Americans or Europeans deciding what is good and what is bad.
