I watched the Quackalope playthrough and found this to be a competent, but not spectacular design. I also noticed that the proposed minis sculpts, such as the ornithopter, harvester and soldier figures, don't seem to match those from the Dune movie- which left me wondering if there is some licensing issue with the film company (to be clear, this issue doesn't affect gameplay, but it is a curious production choice). The exclusives may compel all the Dune fans to pledge all-in, but between the GF9 classic Dune reprint and Dire Wolf's most excellent Dune: imperium, CMON is arriving late to the party with yet another mini-filled dudes-on-a-desert-map affair that after CMON's recent missteps has honestly lost a lot of its luster. I must not fear. Fear of missing out is the mind-killer... FOMO is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my FOMO. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the FOMO has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain... 🖖
It has the Legendary logo on the box so I assume all of that's well, but perhaps they still opted to use their own takes on the book version versus the movie?
This may be a case where the spiritual sequel doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better than the original, even if the designers are the same. War of the Ring and Rebellion haven’t been dethroned, according to TTS impressions, by this new implementation of the formula. I do love the theme, though, but the total cost means I’ll wait for retail to check it out.
I suppose one can check in past CMON campaigns how they are losing support from EU backers campaign after campaign. Looks like this time top 3 EU contries contribute with only ~10% of the backers? I remember when it was almost 50%. Wonder why... 🤓
CMON's shipping estimates/charges are outrageous. I've backed other sizable campaigns (in terms of weight and logistical size) that didn't cost near that much to ship, so whatever they are accounting for or avoiding taking a hit for, it's certainly going to cost them backers. Fortunately, I've had zero interest in their latest IPs. At this point, unless they come out with a S3 of CDMD or additional content for BR, I'm pretty well done with CMON.
Exactly! CMON isn't in a vacuum where we can't compare. And as I said in the past it's not like they are hiding $30 in the cost of the game either, it simply isn't costing that much.
Seemed just meh, not worth 150$ + 50$ for shipping. Seems like they banking off the name. Ill wait to see if I found it at walmart on sale for $50 or under,
Cmon has the worst value proposition, they don't give backers anything for backing. You pay premium, I can never justify backing cmon when I can get things cheaper retail. With Awaken Realms for example, their kickstarters are very good value in my country, the retail versions are more expensive here.
I wouldn't say CMON is the worst. I backed Jurassic World by Prospero Hall - there are very few Kickstarter bonuses and depending on where you live, the retail version is either less expensive or far less expensive. In addition, outside the US backers will be receiving their games months after they are in retail. Of course we backers are to blame for some of this, we should have paid attention to the few benefits of the Kickstarter version so that's on us.
2020-2022 Golden Age of Board Games Yeah sure it only extended to 2022 for those willing to dish out a little extra cash. We got a few more big hitters this year yet! But I'm fine with that since I really will not have room for more games soon. Blowing away and existing games is gonna be increasingly difficult. Silver Age will begin 2030 with a dark age of expansions for struggling companies as they die in between with only best surviving. Will be bittersweet but since I don't need expansions for all but the best it works out.
I feel like shipping has made Kickstarting unfeasible in several ways. I’m passing on most games now. Would have backed this in a heartbeat 3 years ago. And VAT also feels like a backbreaker. Totally boxes out any less than hard core European buyers.
Like you said, it's not just shipping for EU. Games can easily cost double compared to a few years ago. If they charge extra for VAT (I still believe a lot of companies do it because it was an easy profit increase), it's +21%. If prices are in $, conversions to dollar is at least 10 to 20% up, shipping is practically double now if you are lucky and they don't "need/want" more money.
I fscking love Dune. But there’s no way I can justify the costs of backing this campaign, especially when I can order War of the Ring for £80. Shipping + VAT absolutely kills almost any US based KS from the last year, unless it’s mind-blowing. And a re-skin from my favourite IP to my 2nd favourite just doesn’t do that. Maybe at retail, maybe.
Things changed a bit today when CMON introduced a nice KS exclusive expansion and an almost fairly priced All-In pledge. Shipping and VAT makes it still overly expensive, at least in Europe.
Indeed! Sadly they can't help but do bad in at least one area (in this case the difference in their "honest" cost of shipping the all in compared to the core is quite telling :/
It's super important for new games to have a great variety of playthroughs to look at. Such a huge range in film style and performance...and gameplay more than anything is what makes or breaks the game...at least for me.
According to the quackalope video, if you play 4 player then you play on teams, one player is Atraides and one player is freemen. One player is sadakar and one player is Harkonen. There are player boards for each.
@@TheKingofAverage I guess it depends on how important it is to you to include 4 people in the game. As you say in the video you could always play a different game with 4 people.
Happy with War of the Ring. I’m getting my Dune fix from Imperium so don’t need this. This feels like something FFG would do with their cash grabs, reimplement, 2nd, 3rd Ed. Etc Lol. Also feel this is probably better retail so why pay for the huge shipping costs?
The village miniatures are the main reason I decided to just get it retail. When watching the playthrough the places where these miniatures would go pretty much always have miniatures on them (even at setup) and are the muster point of bringing troops onto the board during the game. It just felt like more of a hassle since the army minatures are too big to be on the space with these village miniatures. So they would spend most of their time off the board or with you needing to move them on and off during the game.
Thanks for your perspective. I have and love many CMON games but stretch goals with 50+$ + VAT is a suicide for family budget. I think fantasy stretch goals are usualy more attractive than sci-fi (cyberpunk was boring) for my as d&d player (tehe are also non human charceters). I have to save money for road bike so bye bye Kickstarter :)
Love Dune, but this looks mediocre at best. Add in the price being twice what it's worth and it couldn't be an easier pass for me. Plus I have no interest in the Dune NFTs they will try scamming people with afterwards.
This depends on the popularity of the cmon product. The marvel games are easily worth the price even with shipping. Massive darkness 2 was well worth it. I am confident masters of the universe as well. Zombicide is worth it. I believe this game will sell for more. Let’s say I am in NY and get the core game for 160-170 shipped. The base game will likely sell for about 80-100 by itself and the stretch goal box will likely sell for 100-150 So after market on the cheap side could be 180 plus tax so 200. And on the average side about 250. But this is only if you want all the stretch goals. Usually the best deal is to back the game and then sell the stretch goal Box and keep the base game.
Personally not for me, especially since the Marvel burn, but if you really like dune, you really like war games and you really want those small extras that wont make retail (rolls eyes) then it's maybe for you.
I'm a huge fan of Dune (read all the books) and for that reason I am not getting this. To me, this style of game does not adequately capture what Dune is about. Not saying it is a bad game, just not aligned with what I would want.
Having also reads the whole series, I would say the latter stuff like god emperor thousand year old Leto peace to the crazy Honored Matres and The Enemy etc do not make for a good game. All the games are focused on dune or earlier. I would say the prequels and the first half of dune matches well to the diplomatic games, the 5 player free for all. However the meat of the dune book, from the invasion and destruction of House Atriedes to the end of the book when Paul emerges victorious is absolutely better represented here than those diplomacy games. Ix shouldn’t fighting for control of dune, the Fremen should not be fighting the Atriedes, and the war over dune is a 2 way affair, not a 5 way game of diplomacy.
@@haoz8074 Don't know dude, I think Swill means what attracts people to Dune isn't the combat, its the politics. It's about +230$ just only for core game in my country with Vat and shipping........ I really can't see the reason to make a pledge on KS anymore with these prices!!! And the other thing buy War of the Ring if you like this action system
@@TheKingofAverage yes! I have at least 20+ games that I love but never get played because of my group! Now learning to avoid fomo so my wallet is happier. I appreciate your content a lot these days! TY
One year later, still glad I backed it. I don’t own War of the Ring. Love the Duniverse, so definitely a win for me. Didn’t get the mat or plastic tokens, hoping to add them later on. Getting the Old Man of the Desert (the really BIG worm). Cant wait to dig into this game!
If you like War of The Ring, you can play War of The Ring instead of buying this overpriced nonsense. Better wait for retail, only without KS exclusives, which is incredibly annoying. The most recent SG is Duke Leto, of course KS Exclusive. CMON can stuff it you know where.
This game is vastly inferior to WOTR , just read the rule book, battle card don't have duel use purpose. no political track Cmon its Dune, no veritable path to win, if you don't have WOTR board game just buy it, if you want this wait till more reviews come in, hold back your FOMO and wait for retail. Dune is a solid 6.8 WOTR 9.8
War of the ring is better but it’s also a longer game. Usually runs 10 to 12 rounds, with each round having 4 plus 7 turns. Here it’s also four plus seven turns per round, but in my games on TTS it ends after 5 to 6 rounds. There’s no stalling sieges, everything revolves very quickly. I see this being able to get that war or the ring experience in half the time. Also I don’t think it’s a 6/10 game, and you should actually play a few games before judging. On the War of the ring discord most veterans find the game to be good and a very compelling game.
@@haoz8074 Well it's from CMON after, so I guess it can be expected that it's a streamlined and a little bit more shallow version of WotR.. ;) But I agree, I also wouldn't dare judge the game before playing (although people can play it on TTS)..
The stretch goal characters are for additional setup options. So they either replace existing characters or add one to one side and the other side will be compensated by starting with an extra elite unit or planning card. e.g. In one scenario, Count Fenring and Lady Fenring replace the Baron and Thufir. In another scenario, Duke Leto is added to Atreides(but Paul could not upgrade), and Pieter is added to Harkonnen.
Just some thoughts half way through thr video, but for the price they're asking for, the board should be double sided (despite being mostly desert, there are multiple locations that could be featured) to increase replayability, and there should be a bigger sandworm model. Not Galactus sized of course, but bigger than what there currently is.
I suspect there will be larger sandworms in an expansion - so you'll just have to pay for it :D Double sided would add a large amount of gameplay for sure.
A big no. And not just because of the excessive overpricing, but because the game does not capture the essence of Dune, which is not battles. The essence of Dune is based on politics, diplomacy, and intrigues among the houses, just as it happens in other sagas like Game of Thrones. That's why games like Dune: A game of conquest, diplomacy, and betrayal or Game of Thrones the Board Game are good: Not only because their mechanics, but also because they introduce the essence of the IP.
I backed this at $1, I wished this was a shortened version of War of the ring, Unfortunately the cards have little effect, a bit boring and I dare say the combat system is closer to Risk, I love WOTR, but this one wont be a back for me, I really wanted to be good.
Shortened would be nice! As I said I love games like this, but for just 2 people it can take quite some time. At least TI4 and such support more than 2 really well.
@@Talliesyn Yes VAT in EU is amazing... and what is even better is how in each country they waste all the money collected with VAT. But is another story
If a CMON game looks interesting, wait for retail. The extra VAT charge on PM is ridiculous and a steal. Both Ankh and MD2 on retail cost equivalent in US and in EU. MD2 is ~100USD in US, ~100EUR in EU.
I didn't even look at it because I have given cmon enough money this year.. and I'm still waiting on my dice for massive darkness 2.. which they are "working on" getting to me
Many thanks for this video, you always pack your video's with informative and helpful information, which I appreciate a great deal. I was a BIG CMON fan and pledged all in for most of the older Kickstarter projects which helped me reach becoming a 'Superbacker'. I wanted Cyberpunk and when I knew this was coming out I knew I would want this one too. But on both projects, I was put off by the high and escalated shipping costs, like yourself. The resentment for CMON grew over time and has left a bad taste in my mouth for their strategy to hold their projects to ransom through the large shipping costs. I will still buy their product, but I will wait to get it 20% off, online or at my FLGS. Come on CMON, sort yourselves out!!!!
You are not alone there Lee, we've all walked that path :) I loved CMON's older stuff. Blood Rage, HATE, etc. Gave HATE my game of the year award when it came out :) But sadly the last CMON game I enjoyed was Death May Die. Since then it's been too expensive or too meh for me :(
Never give money to CMON, let them invest their own money to make money. Backing their campaigns only helps their stock market value. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Must buy for me and was thinking I would go retail. Watched your video to make sure I was making the right choice and you confirmed I was. I agree with everything you said and now I subscribed to your channel. Good job!
Should you get it? That's a question someone will answer once he plays it. Now, the real question: Should you pre-order a 120$ game 6 month in advance without trying it? No, that's quite stupid. On the other hand, War of the Ring is a a similar game that has more or less the same miniatures for half price. Until people stops paying overpriced games, the industry will still going in decadence.
I'm only buying this one because I love the IP and the shipping to China is super cheap. I would have never backed this game if I lived outside of China.
Thnx. Great summary. It seems like CMON has used up a lot of cred with backers since the MD2 and MZ campaigns. Too bad, I love the quality of minis and the awesome games they used to make. But who knows, maybe they change their strategy in the future to become as great as they have been.
I wish instead of obvious stuff that could be figured out in 5 min scrolling the page, you'd rather read the rulebook or tried the game on TTS and told us how the gameplay differs from WotR. Ie, please invest more time in finding the info, not only presenting it.
Well I'm sharing opinion commentary, not just the stuff listed on the page, you won't find my thoughts on it all in 5 minutes of scrolling. Speaking of which, it certainly took more than 5 minutes to read through everything. The video alone was close to that. Also, I've not played WotR (though it's been on my wishlist for forever) so couldn't speak on it even if I did :D Lastly, I don't even have enough time to read the rulebooks of games I actually own. I won't be reading rulebooks to games I don't any time soon :D
It’s almost irrelevant in this type of game what quality the mini is because the board gets so crowded that you dont watch miniature quality. They are just pieces. Its also probably the reason why mini is small to make the game easier to manage. The board needs to be massive with bigger minuatures.
oh yeah I have no problem with the size of them, just the detail level crammed onto them when they will be small. Like any game component, you should keep the size of the physical product in mind. It's no different than my gripe that the Bardsung map art on the game board is pixelated. They didn't keep in mind how big it'd be and got an image too small that they had to stretch to fit, hurting the quality.
I’m planning on getting a retail copy of this as well. I think the game looks great. I’ve always wanted to play War of the Ring, but if I’m honest a greatly prefer Dune as a story (it’s my favorite book and I’ve probably read it 7-8 times). I kinda did the same KS math you did and I don’t really think the extras are worth the extra cash in this one.

If you like War of The Ring, you can play War of The Ring instead of buying this overpriced nonsense. Better wait for retail, only without KS exclusives, which is incredibly annoying. The most recent SG is Duke Leto, of course KS Exclusive. CMON can stuff it you know where.
That's a great point, War of The Ring is readily available.
I like the way you worded your thought. This might help me not back it.
Ah interesting thanks!
Shoutout from germany back to you🙂. I would love to Do a Preview for them 😉
It's a big market I feel many of the types of KS's I cover miss out on IMO.
Just some thoughts half way through thr video, but for the price they're asking for, the board should be double sided (despite being mostly desert, there are multiple locations that could be featured) to increase replayability, and there should be a bigger sandworm model. Not Galactus sized of course, but bigger than what there currently is.
I suspect there will be larger sandworms in an expansion - so you'll just have to pay for it :D
Double sided would add a large amount of gameplay for sure.
I would be willing to bet it went from 8 days to 7 days in 1 day.....
haha :D
If only it was a Zombicide 😜🤣
hah! It'd have done great then!
Dune Zombies? Nice!
@@vanvuador8692 The Harkonnen did commit Atreidicide.
Worst deal ever for EU will be 180$... is a joke
easly, depends on where you are, the vat is amazing. :D
@@Talliesyn Yes VAT in EU is amazing... and what is even better is how in each country they waste all the money collected with VAT. But is another story
What are taxes except funds for the government to misuse? :D That's something we all share in common :P
Gave HATE my game of the year award when it came out :)
But sadly the last CMON game I enjoyed was Death May Die. Since then it's been too expensive or too meh for me :(
Never give money to CMON, let them invest their own money to make money. Backing their campaigns only helps their stock market value. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Bad
I don't need the extras, as I did for He-Man
I'll wait for a discounted price on Miniature Market
Must buy for me and was thinking I would go retail. Watched your video to make sure I was making the right choice and you confirmed I was. I agree with everything you said and now I subscribed to your channel. Good job!
Welcome Dan! Looking forward to the game myself, but I'm okay waiting for retail and saving some money/storage space.
Watching from Germany! 👋😊
Big shoutout to you guys! Yall know how to live and game :D
Thnx. Great summary. It seems like CMON has used up a lot of cred with backers since the MD2 and MZ campaigns. Too bad, I love the quality of minis and the awesome games they used to make. But who knows, maybe they change their strategy in the future to become as great as they have been.
There is ALWAYS room to change course and do better. I hope they do too!
Crowdfunding relies on trust, and from my own perspective, I simply don't trust them.
Also, I've not played WotR (though it's been on my wishlist for forever) so couldn't speak on it even if I did :D
Lastly, I don't even have enough time to read the rulebooks of games I actually own.
Man ... I live in Martinique ... 154 USD ... And it s not even for a french version .... I ll have to pass .... sadly ...
War of the ring is so good and I enjoy the Dune theme so I basically have to get this... that said it is overpriced..
Horrible value.
Thank you for these videos. They really help me keep my hype, mindless consumerism n check :)
3 days to go, 668k, WOW, such a failure considering the IP and designers' names...

That's good to know thank you for sharing!
LOLLL.... i wanted to say something, but...maybe...maybe if you rewatch yourself a few more times...you might catch what and how you are saying it....oh gosh...
"And that's it, guys. That is Dune Imperium." Lol I caught that too :P
