Great True Detective reference. Poor Woody.
If it's a licensed game chance are better then not it's going to be like sucking raw sewage from the septic tank in to your mouth
Catwoman the game came out the same year as Jet Li: Rise to Honor which had the same combat controls. Probably what it was influenced from I'm guessing.

@@Invidente7 When I said the "film's director", I was referring to Catwoman's director; Pitof. He was a Visual effects supervisor on Alien Resurrection.
Thanks to the executive producer of this game, I can share information about it.
-The Argonaut Games and EA UK teams worked very closely with Warner Brothers during development. They gave them scripts and production assets to work with but whatever was changed during the films production had to be reflected on in game.
-It wasn't possible to get Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt and Lambert Wilson to reprise their roles in terms of voice acting due to changing production schedules. They did meet the team, talked to them a little bit and gave permission to use their likenesses apart from Benjamin Bratt. His movie character model can be seen in an animation reel I own.
-You were originally able to take out enemies as opposed to knocking them into the environment.
-The game was in development for 7 months. A lot of bugs weren't fixed but the team really tried to polish it as best as they could.
-The game was rushed to tie in with the films premiere. They thought the film was terrible.
-Some of the people on both teams would go to work on the Harry Potter games so they bounced back.
Well, good to know they worked on better games after this flop, the early 2000's Harry Potter games were pretty good for licensed games.
I guess Bratt's paycheck wasn't good enough 😁
That's cool. As bad as the game is, they did put a lot of effort into it
Cheers for this info! I, for one, was absolutely in love with Argonaut's Emperor's New Groove and Aladdin games. Harry Potter 1 and 2 as well.
@@killer1one1 I LOVE the Harry Potter games!

You know it's been an extremely slow year for videogames if Gman is so bored that he's actually reviewing a game like Catwoman.
Modern gaming is pretty boring anyhow, imo. I haven't played any new games that have come out this year because nothing captures my interest. The only game I'm actually excited for is Elden Ring.
There have literally been SO MANY new games, and there are so many coming it's insane. Unless you're unemployed living off a trust fund there is literally no way you could afford to buy all the good new games, or have the time to play them. Hell I'm not convinced there's enough time even then, we're past that point.

The only thing i liked about this iteration of Catwoman was that she uses diamonds (or some other type of gem) as the claws in her suit, which fits with her personality and cat burglary really well. Literally every other aspect sucks though, except maybe for the casting of Halle Berry, I think she could've been a great Catwoman in a different circumstance.
this is the kind of movie that never should've made it past development hell. it was supposed to be a Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman solo film but since WB are slow as hell the years went by and the damn movie never made it past the planning stage. and each time it just kept changing more and more, endless rewrites and recasts, the works. it doesn't help that they gave it to such a no name like "Pitof". I agree, Halle Berry could've been amazing, but that project was just doomed from the word go.
I think Halle Berry would have a hard time pulling off ruthlessness, guile and subtly. She's too nice and sweet.
In all honesty, I never understood all that hate about "Catwoman" film. "One of the worst films in history", "never should have been made" - come on, guys, what are you talking about? Of course film is mediocre and doesn't have any advantages except for visual style and for Halle Berry, but it is nothing even close to be "one of the worst in the history", especially when you start to compare it with films like new SW trilogy.
@@thedreamscripter4002 the new sw trilogy had at least a good movie and one movie that has good IDEAS

My Mom rented this for me at Blockbuster like 20 years ago one day when I stayed home sick from school... My Mom is awesome but the game sucked
Gman you have my sympathy for suffering through this game.
I have a true story about this game. Sadly I was given an Xbox for Christmas along with this game by my mom the year it came out. I played it for an hour before shutting it down then went out the next day and bought Halo Combat Evolved with my savings (best spent savings ever). I tried giving Catwoman to a friend for free but he wisely turned it down so I ended up using it to put my drinks on next to my chair for gaming for a few years before throwing it away. All in all that was the best place for it...as a coaster and the trash.
Lol
Best way for a parent to get their kid to get a job...buy them only the Catwoman game.

You are a reviewing soldier for suffering through this dreck. Also, I'm a fan of how based you are and don't try to hide it. I sincerely respect that, as many creators would try to hide that, as they don't want to risk losing audience members... even though this is supposed to be RUclips.
What I'm saying is, you make great videos, and the time you put into the editing, alone, really comes through. Your videos are so rewatchable due to your quality, and the well-placed Tourette's Guy audio clips always put a smile on my face.
None of the creators I subscribe to try to hide who they are and I can't say I've ever come across them, in fact that's the entire point of youtubers like gman as opposed to out of touch journalists who don't know shit about actually playing games like IGN review writers.

Same here. I watch some recommended videos from time to time and it's genuinely uncomfortable watching people desperately try to avoid making anyone upset. Nobody truly enjoys a creator/entertainer/reviewer/whatever when they're walking on eggshells all the time. Except children, I suppose, since they don't have standards yet.
I like people who are comfortable being who they are. That should be the norm, but not in 2021, unfortunately.
11:58 Death by Degrees did this and was pretty decent. Movement is clunky, but combat overall is really fun.
Too Human, too. Never played it, but haven't heard good things.
The first Monster Hunter and that Jet Li game for Ps2 have the same thing ,it works when you get used but still wierd , kinda makes you wonder people dosen't really know what to do with the right analog stick in that time .
It was the style at the time. Blade 2 had right analog attacking, too. I actually liked that one, though 👍.
@@Dongulator Main problem with Too Human is that it is brutally short, like four or five levels long. And owing to it having been planned to be a multi-part epic, it ends on a cliffhanger that will never be picked up on.
Yeah that game had it's highs and lows but I hold it in a nice place in my heart.
"another game where combat is entirely relegated to the right thumbstick"

Gman, one of my friends worked on one of the versions of this game. He told me working for EA was a really bad experience, apparently the guy in charge would walk in and just talked about how he wanted Cat Woman to move then walk out and not care for anything else about the game. The experience was so bad it galvinized him to quit EA and go work elsewhere.
0:47 that scene in the true detective is actually horrifying, I almost teared up
If I had nickle for every time Jennifer Hale played a cat thief who's morals are a bit ambigious and likes to flirt with the main hero, I would have 2 nickles. Which isn't much but it's weird that it happend twice.
There is a Catwoman GBC game based on the comics, heck Selyna is even wearing her ol' fashioned purple costume! I guess her playable parts in Arkham City is as good as it gonna get.
Jet Li: Rise to Honor also used the right thumb stick to attack and when I was a young lad I remember it working fairly well and being kind of nice at times. Maybe I don’t remember but I think it boils down to execution
I was desperately trying to remember the name of that Jet Li game! I remember renting it and having a decent enough time that I finished it at least
I'm pretty sure the weird glow around Catwoman's skin is actually something that's taken directly from the movie. The filmmakers knew they'd have to use a bad-looking CGI Catwoman for some of the more acrobatic scenes, so they decided to cover Halle Berry in skin oil and foundation to make look more like her glowy and rubbery CG double, making the transition between the two supposedly more believable.
Don't ask me how I know this shit, I'm not sure either.
From an editing point of view, this is possibly your best ever. You have an amazing style and damn, your edits and cuts are perfect. I’m sorry you suffered so much to bring us this masterpiece
I wouldn’t put the blame 100% on Argonaut for this. Gotta remember this was a EA published game so Argonaut were more than likely at the mercy of them.
So EA has another body in its bag that we didn't know about.
Nah this game was back in 2003 when EA were still a less greedy company & got games like SSX, Burnout, Need for Speed, Rock Band.
12:00 It reminds me of the Ape Escape games while I never played them but I know things, in this case the first game uses the face buttons to select a gadget and the right thumb stick uses the gadget. Ranging from moving the Radar to swinging at stun club.
Grabbed by the ghoulies maps combat to the right stick, and I actually think it works really, really well for that game. My favourite post Nintendo Rare game by far.
At least it was compiled on Rare Replay along with Kameo another forgotten Rare game.

@@SolarisKane MOW MY MEADOW!
@@SolarisKane Idk if I'd say 'fantastic'. I enjoyed it as a child (despite the cheap difficulty at times) but it does get really repetitive, even though the combat is pretty fun.
@@snnnaaaaaakeeeee4470 I don't think calling it repetitive is fair. Although there are 100 rooms, they are short and most of them are unique and there's a steady progression of new enemies. As such the game itself is short where a first time player can likely beat it in under 5 hours. There's even a bonus new game plus mode that changes all the rooms with new enemies, but I couldn't beat it as a kid.

I love the "Obscure FPS" reviews, so these "Clearance bin games" reviews aren't bad at all. I like to think what the people who actually got these went through. Anyways, when are we seeing the Halo killer, Nintendo title Geist?

It would seem that analogue fighting contols must have been something that several developers were keen to experiment with in the early 2000s. A precursor to move controls, perhaps?
'Death by Degrees', the Nina Williams led Tekken 5 spinoff on the PS2 similarly used the right thumb stick for her combat moves. Also, 'Capcom Vs SNK 2: EO' on the Xbox had it's default control scheme mapped to both the thumb sticks. No doubt there were other titles, as well. Even the original PS2 and HD versions of 'Okami ' uses analogue control for the paint brush combat mechanic.

These movie tie in games are made on shoestring budgets and have extremely tight timeframes so you can't expect the A game even from quality developers
