I've also achieved the look of forged copper, bronze, gold and brass by painting the foil. Acrylic in metallic colors looks pretty in both bright and antiqued faux finishes. Thinned acrylic paint in black, brown, grey or verdigris offers lots of variety to compliment any decor.
Yes! So many cool looks can be made with this technique! TFS!
I like it. The black paint really gives it dimension and a rustic look. Makes it more realistic, and not just like "oh it's aluminum foil". Nice job.
I miss your show. I remember getting my kids off to school and grabbing a coffee and just chilling out watching you and your mom...
Awwwww, thanks Lynn! It's great to keep connected with our Aleene's fans! [Tiffany]

I remember the show too! I would not miss a show!
I found this video by accident. It was so lovely seeing you on the tube again! I too, used to watch you and your mom on television, many moons ago. I now live in jolly old England and it brought back wonderful memories of all the crafts I used to do. Luckily, Aleene's glue has crossed the pond along with companies using the same color of bottle and similar names to try and imitate this fabulous glue. I am not fooled! Hope I can find more videos or old ones of you and your lovely family. Thank you for being a part of my life! May God Bless and keep you and yours safe!
WOW haven't seen you ladies in years. Brought back wonderful memories of my son and I watching the show ❤
Thanks Irish Rose :) Great to reconnect with our Aleene's fans! XOXO Tiffany
Wow what a blast from my past..HI HEIDI.. Its been a long time :) I did this tech on a frame for my Mommy. Its still on her wall with a pic in it..Take care!
Yep Pamela McIntosh We're still around! So glad you found us! [Tiffany]
thanks for posting this! I have a collection of picture frames I knew I would find something cute to do with them...cannot wait to try!
Yes! mrshammerhankus This is a great technique for frames!
Hi Heidi, I reconize your voice. We use to watch Aleenes all the time. By the way how is your MOM and Sis? Have a great day
I love the effect! My mom actually did this when I was very little and I never knew how. The addition of the black paint gives it a look of depth and makes it really unique! I have a couple of broken vases that I'm going to do this on! Thanks for the tips, love it!
Boy was I ever excited to see you, Heidi. I watched your Mom's crafting show from it's onset for a long time after. I sure have missed not being able to watch it on TV. I even remember when she had you on the first time you appeared on the show. I think you and Tiffany have done a wonderful job and I enjoy making the crafts you demonstrate. You're Awesome !!! I am so grateful that you share your talents with others the way you do, and your demonstrations and explanations of the "how to" are so easy to understand. Thanks a million.
Thanks Peggy Granberg It's so nice to reconnect with our Aleene's fans! Glad you are joining us here at Cool2Craft [Tiffany]
Loved your Mom and loved you all. So happy you are on YT for us xoxo jonnie

Yes Deborah - Heidi and I have been crafting for as long as we can remember. Creativity is definitely our passion! [Tiffany]
Diane- Thank you.. It is a great technique, as you can use it for so many things. My sister forged foiled the walls in a small bathroom years ago... it looked fabulous!
Of course some people will try and find the one thing…of course they are glued on.
I really love the crafts you do. Sounds like your Mom started you two out with crafts, love and fun!
I can remember doing this craft during the summer reading program at my local library as a kid! Thanks for reminding me how much fun it can be!
Used to watch your show and y'all and your Mom all the time. Miss the great ideas.
Hi Diane! Always nice to reconnect with our Aleene's fans! [Tiffany]
10-plus years down the road, and it's still cool!
Love the Box ,and hopefully I can make one . Thanks for sharing .
Amazing results with such simple supplies - that's a GREAT technique. Recycling a coffee cup sleeve knocked me back in my chair! LOL. Thank you so much for the ideas.
Fabulous effect! What a great idea and there are so many ways to use this technique, brilliant, thank you! x
Love this! Great work, and how neat that your mother and friends did this in the 60's. Neat craft tradition to hand down. Thank you for sharing. I'm an art teacher for middle schoolers and will try to think of some way to share a project with my students :)
Thank you! We're so glad you liked it!
Love it! I don't understand the thumbs down...????? It has a rustic type look that many of us love...❤ thank u
Thanks Pamela! We recognize that everyone has different creative tastes. [Tiffany]
Because it looks like a box covered in aluminum foil
So glad to find you are the 'new' Aleens
Thanks Denise! You will have a lot of fun creating with this technique!
Heidi and Tiffany, I watched your show every Saturday morning. I also own The Big Book of Crafts Binders. I still use the ideas. In fact our home mission group PFMC-Helping Hands will be doing a few more of the crafts for Operation Christmas Child boxes.
Hi Carol! So nice to hear from you. Those Big Book of Crafts were definitely a labor of love. We still reference them too! So happy to reconnect with our Aleene's fans! [Tiffany]
That's really cool, thanks for the tutorial! I found that if you use a metallic silver basecoat with a thin coat of whatever color you choose you can get a similar finish
I watched you an your mom on Aileens show all the time. Sure miss that. I always got good ideas from you. Nice to see you again doing something.
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it!
We're so pleased you were inspired by this project!
Tamara...So excited you liked this technique! Enjoy!

I so miss your show and your Mom!! tyfs!
How easy and sweet is this to do - thanks for sharing!
I love the look of this technique. It looks great with cogs under it too. Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes, this technique looks great with cogs. Super cool for a steampunk effect!
Really good technique, can do it easily now the see how. Thank you from Mexico city. Desde la ciudad de Mexico
We're so pleased you liked it!
I actually like it! Especially with embellishments. can make keepsake boxes for hubby.
Thank you sweet girl I have loads of 8track tv classes from you your mom your sister friends but now my sweet husband passed away last year and. I can’t play them yet cause I don’t know how to plug them to work but Iv found you on here with this forged looking box Happy New Year and God bless .
Thank you Hummer Klein! Always happy to reconnect with one of Momma Aleene's fans! [Tiffany]
We are so happy you liked it!
Thanks everyone for your kind words on my project...
Julie I sprayed the finished box with a clear sealer ( I used the Aleene's Clear gloss sealer- also comes in Matte finish)
Daisy....we have lots of videos here on you tube and on our site Cool2Craft
what a FANTASTIC idea! Thank you so much!!
I did something similar in elementary school ,But we used black shoe polish . Thanks I want to try this for my card making. and couldnt quite remember what to do.But i knew it was fun.
That looks great! My husband bought a box to wrap my Christmas present in. It's a pretty
Big box. I am going to turn it into a jewelry box for my daughter.
Thanks Linda!
As a hobbiest black smith I will say that looks nothing like forged metal, not saying that isn't a good idea just forged metal is no where near as rough as that. The surface impurities are barley noticeable at all. But I think that is a great idea and looks great as I love making anything and everything to pass the time and looking to be able to be self efficient if need be :D deffo's gonna try this out!
Thank you Pam! We love to hear that you are going to use this for cardmaking!
WOW so simply but so beautiful.. I am assuming you line the interior of the box with fabric if you haven't fully covered in the foil ??
this is so beautiful. i did alot of stuff by using this technique. Thnx for sharing.
We're glad you like it!
This is an older video, but I just love it
@Everywhere2 Thank you so much!
I'm doing a table top like this with mod podge. I will be "antiquing" it after all of my MP coats & sealing it with polyurethane. So far it looks amazing! I think the antiquing process is what makes this look expensive & better imo :)
+Siréne Aqua Thanks for sharing Sirene! Hope your table top turns out super amazing!
I am positively in LOVE with this channel and so addicted! You guys have the coolest ideas! I love that you use stuff from around the house and nothing is wasted but mostly I love that what you make doesn't appear to be junk...there is a fine line when it comes to crafts! I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel & now I've got tons of videos I've never seen so Yay for me! :) Thanks so much for sharing all your great ideas with us! Merry Christmas!!!
Thank you very much for sharing. Great idea. Justina from Lithuania.
Thank you Justina Stočkė So nice to hear from our creative friends in Lithuania!
real nice and looks so easy . thanks for the lesson
awesome idea, will try it. thank you
Mayzie May.....If you are covering large items to use this 'Look Forged Metal Technique' There will be some overlapping on the edges. Just make sure you place glue under the edges of the foil and wipe off any excess glue on finished project or the paint won't work. Make sure whatever you glue under the foil for the dimensional design, that the glue is completely dry before applying the foil. I've used the Aleene's Tacky Glue...it works the best!
Wow!!! I liked it soo simple but too beautiful.. I'm going to make one.thank you
Thanks for watching Treasa! It's definitely easy and a fun faux technique! [Tiffany]
Also to forge it you can put a tiny bit of paint on your brush and brush lightly over it. It puts not too much paint on and gives the same effect.
Thanks, Laura!
Thank you! We love our EcoHeidi!
Yes this technique would work on hard plastic. We suggest that you sand the plastic surface first. We have not tried this technique under high use (not sure how you are planning on using the hairbrush) so it will be important to seal it thoroughly.
I love this, it looks cool to me. I’m going to try it . Thanks. Janice
Thanks Janice Bradford! We love this vintage Momma Aleene technique!
Came very handy for my costume. Thank you
That's awesome Freedom Speech!
Excellent tutorial. I like idea that is mentioned below about the sealant. May stiffen up the aluminium a bit so that it last longer. Just a thought. TFS :-)
Yes Tina Johnson You can certainly add a sealant if you like. We do have pieces from the Aleene's vintage archives that are over 50 years old that weren't sealed that still look good. So it really becomes a personal choice of sealant or not. Thanks for stopping by and sharing! [Tiffany]
Awesome, I will surely try this!
New subscriber. What a great idea love the technique and the layering
Thanks for stopping by and watching this vintage craft technique!
Wow!! this is a really cool idea. Thank you for sharing this....I'll definitely try this.
Jasmin Andrews Thanks Jasmin! Let us know what you make!
I like the technique and I am going to try it.
We agree this is a cool technique Louise!
Great tutorial! I've never heard of this technique before. I can't wait to try it out!
Brilliant technique!! I also will use this for cardmaking.
EcoHeidi used Aleene's Original Tacky Glue to glue the trinkets on this box. We have original look of forged metal boxes that were made by Momma Aleene over 40 years ago that are still holding strong!
So many things I loved about this video! There is a sense of pride and sheer joy transmitted. I clicked the Like button even before the actual tutorial started! I will definitely try this at home! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Bibi! We love our Momma Aleene's vintage techniques! [Heidi & Tiffany]
I can see this method bumped up a notch with imitation gold foil!
I love it! How fun and so easy!
This looks easy and fun. Could you spray-paint the foil with metallic paint and then use the black paint on it, to make it look like aged bronze or copper?
This is so cute and fun to do!
+michael jackson (michaeljacksonsoul) Thank you for stopping by :)
@Cool2Craft At this time I have no idea how to upload a video, but it's on my list of things to do. I will definately share with you.
Oh girls I am so glad I found you. I have missed all of you so much. I was such a follower of your mom's show. I loved it when you joined her. I sub'd to you and I have a lot of friends that will also. Thanks so much..TFS God Bless
carliesgram2: We just use the regular kitchen foil. We're sure you should be able to use heavy duty as it would probably give you more texture but have never tried it!
@littleluluscraps So happy you found us! It's been SO cool to reconnect with our Aleene's friends and fans {Tiffany+Heidi}
Very interesting and crafty, thank you for your great instructions.
Thank you Donna! [Heidi]
Great technique!
What a lovely technique!👍👌 Which is the glue you used please?
Very pretty! Thanks so much for the project!!
wow can you make jewelry with this? if so will you please do tutorial making jewelry with this technique? I love love love your videos. You guys are so creative!
Great box! thank you for sharing!...For sure, I will give it a try!
oh that's pretty! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks @susiecuue!
Interesting idea! Thanks!
She switched out the foil because the piece she used on the box top was cut to size. That helped speed up the demo process so you didn't have to watch her cut the foil piece that she textured.
That is beautiful!!
thank you your show made me start crafting ;)
nice creative work...you are deserved to appreciate...good luck...do more
OMG I can't believe this video came up. I remember watching your mother everyday years ago. I even taped her shows. Unfortunately I don't have a player for the cassettes anymore. I remember seeing you on her show too. Your mom is the reason I started doing crafts. Doing crafts has always calmed my nerves and relaxed me. I bought and used many of her products. I have subscribed to your channel so I know I'll be seeing more fun crafts. Good Luck Ladies. I miss your mom and I've never forgotten her.
Hi, gals! I was an avid watcher of all things Aleene ... and I'm so glad to have found you again. I remember learning this technique years ago ... loved it then, still love it now. I'm sitting here eyeing an old book that I plan to turn into an art journal and this would be a perfect technique for the covers. Thank you for all the years you have shared your talents with us; I hope you will continue to do so for many more years to come. God bless.:)
Hi Nancy Bee SO glad you found us! We look forward to connecting with you here on our YT channel! [Tiffany]
So glad you are on YT. Watched you all on your mom's tv show years ago.
Never miised a day, it wasn't morning without Aleens.
Loveing all these crafts and am having fun doing them wit my friends.
Hi Colleen Ciecura So nice to hear from you! It's always great to reconnect with our Aleene's fans! [Tiffany]
So glad I saw this tutorial! I make a box for my mom every xmas and her birthday so when I saw this, I knew I was going to use this technique. It turned out GREAT! Thanks!!!
