danny carey would tell you different. have you even heard the studio version? or is your opinion based solely on this video? I'm telling you it syncs with the original perfectly. every fucking hit. it's true.
this is nowhere near the genius of richard d james (aphex twin). they're a mediocre band with a bad case of sucking in this live cover. Pennie's drum solo to this song however is particularly redeeming.
Mike Patton did the actual come to daddy cover with Dillinger on the Irony is a Dead Scene cd and its amazing. This guy (Greg i believe) is really good live, this is just an unflattering concert i suppose.
part of the reason why i love metal would be the fact that the violent sounds and emotions relfect the true nature of societies, in a broad sense. the sound is an embodiment of the rage, suffering, and evil expressed silently by the corrupt and self-obsessed. those of you who feel the need to talk as if you're better than those who love this band need to realize that they arent the only ones living on this earth, and that not everyone is the same as them.
Love the intensity. Will always have much respect for Chris Pennie - watch him cover this solo - he can cut it. Also - as a band they mainly look pretty fit. Going to see them at the end of the month - have a feeling it is going to be insane.
I ONLY like tihs course the'yre craz,y but irs not elektronikaly so its the worst cover, AUTOMATICIC. nice new invented genre though., are al there songs like that?
I'm not a guitarist and I don't think that I know everything, in fact I know far from everything. I think when it comes to music however, the Dillinger Escape Plan (whom this conversation and video are about, not me and my lack of guitar skills) pretty much DO know everything. So go ahead and bad mouth me, because it doesn't hurt, but you better think twice before you talk shit about the DEP, because honestly, they could "play circles around" and write better stuff than you and me put together.
For the record, I don't have anything against people who like DEP. Subjectivity and all that. But I'm not judging them by one song, but more commenting on the one song that is the epitome of their downsides. Not a very positive or fair point to discuss them by, but my comments are geared more towards the comments in this thread saying how brilliant and complex this very cover is, when it really isn't by many musical standards; not even theirs.
This comment was the biggest waste of time to read. Do you realize the main focus to them covering Come To Daddy was simply the fact that their drummer could do it without having to attach a drum machine to their set? You must not be a musician at all with a comment like that. And if you are a musician, you're a third rate musician, with fourth rate opinions. It's probably good you're not a fan of Dillinger.
Ok, but perhaps there are people who don't just think it's cool because it's wierd, people like myself who are interested in the musicality of it. Yes, it's high energy, but so is Drum and Bass. Yes it's different from the mainstream stuff but so is drone. The reason this kind of music attracts so many people is a) cult status among kids and b) people who are genuinely interested and fans of the music, not just the idea.
Everyone has different taste, as much as I can see why you dislike it, why can you not see that my opinion differs, and see why I like it. And why is it interesting that they have a clean cut image? What? Different music requires a different image? I'm sorry but you are not looking at the right things there mate, check out their song structures, harmonies, dissonances and rhythms. You will find that they are actually incredibly talented musicians...
If you want originality in an abstract sort of music check out Mars Volta's cd, deloused in the comatorium, its a trip. Not intentionally dropping names but thats the cd that comes to mind when I think of talent, originality, and just being musically special. You may disagree but I guess thats just music. Not everyone likes the same stuff. But this, to me, is some of the worst music I have heard.
Music is art. This music would be an abstract class of music in that case I think you would agree. But when you go in that direction you should really have something very special to offer. I dont think that is the case with this band. They are just playing twice as fast and singing more abrasively while not offering any sort of originality. I think its obvious they lack originality when their most known song is a cover, that says something.
Musically educated and musically talented are two different things. Their guitarists are absolutely nothing special. The vocals, if you can call them that, are just plain silly. The most talent in the whole group is undoubtedly the drummer. As a band they may be as educated as Einstein for all I know, but they have the musical talent of a toddler. This isnt good music by any standard.
well at least theres a few people who know what im talking about, but i do have to say Rotpursid put it in the right perspective, i mean it is MY opinion, and i cant stand listening to this stuff, i just happened to come across this video because i clicked on the wrong link to something else, but whatever, this could go on and on, and we could go back and forth...but i still think they suck
Okay... Dillinger Escape Plan is horrible... But I had no idea that they were this bad. This literally sounded like shit on a shit being pounded against a metal bucket upside down on the lead singer's head. It was fuckin' bad. Real bad. Aphex Twin = The Shit, and DEP should NOT be doing this... It really didn't even sound like APHEX's original... Nothing, nothing like it.... At all. It sucked. I didn't even finished, I stopped 'cause it was THHHHAAAAT bad. Bad.
I never thought this would be possible to perform live, apparently it is. Though they havn't got the drums quite right and the voice modulation is a bit too much. p.s. this isn't techno you noobs this is (doomcore) IDM IDM is a glitchy form of drum n bass where almost every sequence is used just once or is very very long so it hardly contains any actual drumloops. It's a lot of work to get IDM drums right.
Pretty sure the merits of the original mostly resided in excellent synths, programmed drums, crazy sounding vocals and all around fantastic sound design. Here you have the musical simplicity of the original but renditioned with the mediocre guitars, acoustic drums and vocals that you hear everywhere. TDEP have done some decent stuff but this isn't any of it.
I will agree with you partially, a lot of their songs sound like crap. But when you actually analyze their music, not only is it INCREDIBLY technical, but it's technical to a point where almost no one can match it. So next time you hear them playing what sounds like random crap, it's probably some massively syncopated rhythm that you could never in a million years comprehend.
A second rate musician to me is a lot of things, but in this case it's a group of frat rats strumming three chords out of time while what sounds like an angry 12 year old tries to sound scary over it. And if you want to bring how well they're doing as a testament to them being good, well that makes Britney Spears better than Ludwin van Beethoven.
is this chris penne playing here? trust me i love the band and ive met them all, theyre actually really nice guys....I just preferred the way i played it on the drums....thats all. If I was any good id have a record deal, yeah i guess you have a point. I never said I was better than them. Then you said, "You don't so shut up you spoilt middle class bastard."
this band would be good if they didn't make music that sounded like vomit. chris pennie is an awesome drummer, but what kills me is their singer. maybe if he changed his screams i'd appreciate them. but every song he sounds like he's being stabbed, while everyone throws their instruments against the wall.
"no talents hacks" Haha. You obviously have no understanding of the technical aspects of playing an instrument or playing in band. Please, always be sure you educate yourself on a subject before you comment on it. Otherwise you look and sound foolish. It's one thing if you don't like it, but to say it's "no talent," that's just foolish.
I used to really hate dilligner. I was told to go see them, so I did and they where incredible. Stunning live show. It's a great cover but they're pretty damn sloppy in this clip. There's a much tighter live performance of this cover with Patton on youtube... go check it out. Stop slagging off dillinger. They shit all over your crappy band. }: P
ive tried hard and hard to see what this band is trying to do and have come out with the fact that there music is just noise, yes they do play their instruments with great talent and theyre something different but the songs just appear to be a random making of noise, but im gonna listen to more of their stuff
it is very complex, if u wanna try playign some of the guitar riffs, bass lines, or drum solos go ahed i bet you couldnt pull any off. DEP is extremely complex and technical i guess maybe u dont look at it the way i do, theyre an aquired taste band but overall theyre all fucking genious on their indtruments and completely heavy as fuck
This is just a hideous amount of noise...the only one who seems to actually have put any effort into making this sound decent is Chris Pennie. Fair play to him for actually learning the song. Shame on the other members of the band for ruining what could have been an epic cover...
what in the NAME of the GODLESS did they do to the vocals!? thats just plain RUDE! chris penny did a fuckign AWESOME job of drums, the other 2 were.... okay, but oh dear god, those vocals are torture! if this is what you do to it... leave other ppls stuff alone!
Yeah ok. I just woke up and I have to hear a comment like this. Production drums with every sound layered to perfect with hits literally unable to be covered by a human-being > Average metal drummer. If you knew anything about production you would make a comment like that,
Don't get me wrong because i'm not the kind of person to wait for somebody to insult me back on youtube but why would you say something bad about this video? Did you watch it to make fun of the video? It is kind of dumb. like I said I don't wanna get into an argument we are all friends here. :)
i never said he was shit i can do better i said i like the way i did it better..... your just looking for someone who is saying any little thing at all so you can call them an unfan or whatever it is your doing....this is tiring....im dropping this waste of time. peace.
If you think what aphex twin is complicated then you have been smacked on the head with a frying pan a few too many times. There's nothing hard about three note progression with effect pads and drum loops. Anyone who knows how to use a DAW could do that in under an hour
Say what you want, They got a Good recording deal and hundrers of thousands of fans worldwide. I enjoy this its good to here the oppositeend of the spectrum versus persay generic metalcore riff to breakdown formula. Plus covering a dance tune is pretty fucking ballsy and interesting to do.
If you don't like that - maybe you just didn't get the glue about epic, chaotic, disharmonic playing. But stop comments that just show your limited horizon in music. *whee, I don't like this and that...* Anyway - thumbs up for this great show.
Thats how you turn shit into gold ....and in this case... it makes me realy sad .... :D but at least they jump around like crazy bastards and do some show xD for that it would be worth seeing them ...but not for the music ...just not my type ;)
i shouldnt have said complicated, cuz that's what i like to play is complicated stuff my bad...but as far as busy stuff it's pointless, there's no reason to have a song that's that busy, it makes it sound garbled i guess...idk just my personal opinion
i saw these guys with unearth nd slipknot back in 2005 wen i was a freshmen haha. man the singer is ripped as hell. then i saw the drummer jus play half of his kit wit the bass, hi-hat, nd snare jus the singer was goin crazy nd knocked off the other kits
they have great songs like Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants, but i have to say that live they dont sound too well...but what the hell i love to see a band with a great energy rather than some guys that just stare at their instruments
Yes the drums are horrid, but don't forget that the guitar, bass and vocals are terrible as well. Why this video hasn't made it onto fail blog, or why there isn't a keyboard cat coming at the end, I don't know.
This is disguting. Richard James would run away in tears if he had to hear this. And the drumming is fucking terrible, could have at least kept it to breakbeat. Does no justice to the original, none. I flagged this shit.
i couldn't agree with you more so many people speak shit about DEP but they have energy like no other band i've seen and are phenomenal musicians. the studio version of their cover does sound a lot better though.
i thought the point of a true cover was to make it your own anyway... Jimi Hendrix & All Along the Watchtower ring a bell? he transformed that song from an acoustic ballad to a kickass display of virtuosity.
Most definitely. Although I'm still impressed that the drummer didn't fall flat on his face. I saw another video of this guy on the Tube and he just did the drums alone, and it was a fair bit more impressive than this.
Once you gain a basic understanding of the technical aspect of instrumental play, you will realize how foolish your comments are. Not liking it is one thing, saying they suck because you can't understand music comp is another.
@yamahoshi1 if you are talking about the EP "irony is a dead scene" which the track 'come to daddy' is on.... then you are mistaken. Mike Patton did the vocals on that track and well as all the others.
see, I think a lot of people who are aphex twin fans think this cover is bad because of the live versions on youtube, but the studio version with mike patton singing(not this guy), is fucking phenomenal.
You who diss DEP are children who obviously don't understand math metal. These guys are brilliant. You must see them live to truly appreciate their talent. Then, and only then, will you understand....
I don't even practice any of the instrumentation that they feature, so you're right. Good thing it doesn't matter since saying you have to match an artist's skill to speak against it is fallible.
Weak... with a helping of gay. Don't even attempt this unless you have a platoon of keyboardists and a jungle of drums, with at least three drummers. And also don't be Dillinger Escape Plan.
As I said, not everyone likes the same kind of stuff. Your not telling me anything I havent already said myself. Your comment, much like this music, is unoriginal; maybe thats how you relate to this.
if you're using "techno" as an umbrella term for all electronic music (which a lot of people do), then it IS techno. as for idm - terrible name for a genre, even aphex twin rejects the term.
Also, if you're gonna say that you're better than me on guitar, (which based on my prominent lack of axe skills) SHOULD be obvious, then post a video of you playing something you wrote.
are you blind to the fact that people have different tastes than you? dont be so closed minded. no one asked you to like them, so you aren't justified in expressing such negative emotions.
I DID know it was a cover. And it was such a terrible cover that it didn't even come close to doing Aphex Twin's original justice. Hence the entire reason for my original post.
This is a cover of an Aphex Twin song. The way he says "Daddy" is the same as in the original. Its supposed to sound strange. I love Dillinger, but I prefer the original version.
pretentious because I think this is a crude bastardization of the original song? even if I *didn't* like the original, I'd still think this was a half-hearted, mediocre cover.
dude... DEP isnt really hard at all. i like them a little bit, but for the most part, it's horribly-written clashing cords. it's not really very complex either. just letting you know.
don't even believe it's his vocal effects, they are changed through an effectbox dude and don't touch that song, especially not by a band that throws shit in the crowd and spits on girls
My god, heard the drummer performing this over the Aphex Twin track and just had to check them out but this is a complete fucking mess... no wonder he didn't stick around.
its the guy who does the voice affects for him in the song.if you notice he cant make the wierd sounds on his own so the mic is hooked up to the effects box tht he controls
You need to be familiar with the song to appreciate it. The original is by the electronica artist "Aphex Twin". The poor sound quality in the vid screws it up.
It usually pisses me off when people leave comments on music videos just to say they suck... But sweet Jesus, does DEP actually hate this song or something?
Absolutely horrible. I like both Dillenger and Aphex, but this is a disgrace to both. Aphex's music is apparently not music that can be covered by a live band.
@gallespaul its dillinger ... havn't you seen them live? he didn't fall he attacked the fucking floor ... :L this is calm from them being onstage ... :L
Very well put Rotpusrid. When i hear bands like My Chemcial Romance, all i hear is a bunch of ungreatful bastards singing about how their perfect life sucks, if you know what i mean. Like, they are one of the most successful bands in the world, and all they do is bitch and complain about things that arent right. But hey, thats just me? Other people , their fans will hear something else, like their singing for a cause or something. But whatever, i leave that to their fans, Whcih isnt me.
i was there... the vocalist pooped on the stage and throw it on the
audience... just lovely
Ah so this was the legendary concert which got him banned from performing in the uk
I've never heard anyone cover Aphex Twin. Freaking sweet!
danny carey would tell you different.
have you even heard the studio version? or is your opinion based solely on this video? I'm telling you it syncs with the original perfectly. every fucking hit. it's true.
oh that's the one without patton
i was deceived
Woah, ITV2? When and what was this?
This is amazing, Aphex Twin fanboys can't handle a bit of change
@@rorz999 but its all organic, try playing this without any backing track
It's interesting
hahahaha, the crowd just has no clue how to process what's going on onstage. they don't know what to do! just standing there like wuttttt
it was the first show.. people just starting coming in the festival
I love this easy-listening music, dont you!
i wish they used this voice effect on some of their own stuff ... sounds interesting and suits their stuff
I love how the audience is completely unimpressed
I like that effect on his mic. gives his voice the tone of an alien or something.
This is one of the best covers ever done, on the album at least. There is definately something lost in the live version.
It's Mike Patton
Yep, Mike Patton lol
All these electronic music fans coming here clearly completely misunderstanding Dillinger
im pretty sure this was reading 2002, i was there, it was the year that he took a shit onstage, best festival moment ever
jesus, what kind of drugs are they on??!
i want some
Jam it's Aphex Twin's cover.Watch his clip.Richard used drugs for sure
This sounds fucked up...the vocals have the worst effects and the guitars get loud as fuck and the drummer isn’t even close to the beat lol.
they have an amazing drummer...oh my god.
this is nowhere near the genius of richard d james (aphex twin). they're a mediocre band with a bad case of sucking in this live cover. Pennie's drum solo to this song however is particularly redeeming.
Mike Patton did the actual come to daddy cover with Dillinger on the Irony is a Dead Scene cd and its amazing. This guy (Greg i believe) is really good live, this is just an unflattering concert i suppose.
1:01 - EPIC FALL, i love those guys

sounds like shit, i loved it
I was there that morning, not the band to watch with a tequila hangover, esp not when Greg took a shit onstage.
Not the same without Mike Patton
Love the intensity. Will always have much respect for Chris Pennie - watch him cover this solo - he can cut it. Also - as a band they mainly look pretty fit. Going to see them at the end of the month - have a feeling it is going to be insane.
Patton did it better
They're REALLLLY good. Crazy skills.
@CumulusDrone this found my ear's g-spot
Well thats Aphex Twin murdered.
Sweet ass cover. I think the drummer knows most of the song but you can tell when he's goofing around. :)
fell on its back and keep all composure GOOD
Lo interesante es que hace muchos años tenía Dillinger y Aphex twin grabados en el mismo caset....
I ONLY like tihs course the'yre craz,y but irs not elektronikaly so its the worst cover, AUTOMATICIC.
nice new invented genre though., are al there songs like that?
WTF????
Sounds like they turned some kindegarden kids lose on stage and they took their candy away,so their taking it out on the their music gear.
Aphex Twin made the original to show the Hard Style guys how it's done.
And this is a sick cover.

Was I the only one who thought that was terrible?
I mean, I love deathmetal, blackmetal, grindcore and all that... but that was just embarassing...
The drumming is incredibly out of place, the drummer needs to learn what a breakbeat is.
Look i'm done ok. I just don't give a damn about this crappy cover or a band that I was listening to years ago and quickly abandoned. Let it ago.
dude, everyone in the band is on a different page for this song. i don't care how good people think this band is, they destroyed this song. haha.
