- Here are 3 metal riffs to practice your downpicking. What makes these riffs more interesting is that you're also combining other metal guitar techniques and they're not all in the same key.

You can go through this video as many times as you want and can also skip to the end to play along with the full mix.

03:27 - Riff 2
06:03 - Riff 3
09:34 - Full Mix with Tabs
Practice these down picking riffs daily. Once you get them down, start to expand on them and make them your own riffs.
You can do this by adding notes, taking away notes and simplifying the riffs, playing the riffs faster or slower, or even better, try playing these riffs on a different part of the fretboard.

As a beginner, I can’t wait to learn these riffs! They sound heavy!!!!
🤘
Hey Jason, I'm new to metal after 40 years playing the same 80s rock over and over. Subscribed today and looking forward to more lessons. Love your work.
Thank you for the sub! The video I just posted today is right up your alley: ruclips.net/video/maM_vzN8QEw/видео.html
Cool riffs Jason! I already played the first 2 today, keeping the 3rd one for tomorrow😁
🙏🏻🤘
I've never used a dow to pick with before, I'll have to try it out.
🤘
I was pretty much a blues guy for years. Until, my brothers band needed a bass player, they played metal. I was out of my element. Now im hooked.
Just took riff 2, & spun it around. Working on the single note parts now.🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
Awesome brother! 🤘
Absolutely awesome ❤❤❤
🙏🏻🤘
Thank you for this, downpicking is one of my favourite things on guitar.
It’s such a cool method! It gives you a particular sound that punches you in the soul!
Great riffs!
🙏🏻🤘
Gives me adrenaline rush!!!
🤘
Thank you so much for the lessons! It keeps my skills in check!
Great to hear that dude!
thank you for all you do...love this one
🙏🏻🤘
Excellent lesson. Loved it.
🙏🏻🤘
You really dialed in a sick tone!
Thank you dude. That’s the Blackstar HT Venue amp!
Thx Jason🎸
🤘
Nice shirt! I saw siren in Germany in 2019
Oh wow that’s awesome! I’m good friends with the band (they’re here in Tampa). I’m also writing a song with their singer Doug Lee.
Damn dude those rule.🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
🙏🏻🤘
It's nice seeing you playing an Ibanez 🤘
🤘
Hell yeah
🤘
if I picked up anything from James Hetfield, it was downpick, downpick, always downpick if you can :D (that Misfits punk influence they had) I learned Master of Puppets with downstrokes because I couldn't do alternate picking well at the time LOL
One guitarist at the time I joined my band was kinda lazy and it drove me nuts, he would alternate pick repeated 8th notes at moderate tempo while I'm downpicking them and wondering what was going on. I can appreciate economy of motion, but it was a little much. Oh well, he was still a good player and pity it didn't work out.
I do love the upper note shift on power chords, too. Occasionally breaking monotony is more important than some people realize. Regarding keys, I almost never never use the open B string on my 7-strings, just like my 5-string basses. It took a while for that to occur, though, and it was from just getting comfortable playing all over the neck. I abuse the D and C a lot, though :D Great flavor to drop below E when it's right.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Emily, I always appreciate your thoughts and insight. Yeah, having one guitar alternate picking while the other is down picking can really throw things off. There's a difference in the feel of the riff with both
Great video as usual. Was wondering, do you use a black star 100 watt head at home. If so, can ya actually keep the volume “house friendly, and wife safe”? I’d love to get one but worried I wouldn’t be able to use it at home.
Dude that amp sounds great even at low volumes. It also has a 10 watt option. And you can also run it through your interface and use their Can Rig software, so it’s studio and low volume friendly in many ways
I just subbed but how do i get that free metal riffs and licks book?
Btw I'm loving this channel. You're playing the stuff I want to learn.
Thank you. There's a link in the video description
I really enjoy your riffs and tutorials! I would love to see some metalcore tutorials from you, especially in the style of As I Lay Dying's songs like "Shaped by Fire," "Anger and Apathy," or "Upside Down Kingdom." Additionally, it would be great to see tutorials for some Bury Tomorrow songs, such as "Abandon Us," "Gods & Machines." and "boltcutter"
Thanks!
🙏🏻🤘
Man I love the riffs but always wondered where the single note riffs come from are they part of a scale?
They’re essentially part of a scale but I don’t use that approach at all. I think about what sounds cool to me. Think about what you’re hearing in your head and work on translating that to the fretboard
That's awsome thank you for the advice and keep up the awsome content 🤘🤘🤘
Don't forget your Rhythm Theory folks!
