I saw a documentary on Gary where he explained that Austin City Limits was his second home. He would hang out there as a kid and just became a fly on the wall backstage, learning everything he could from all of the artists who would swing by to perform. I bet that was one hell of a childhood!

When I fisrt watch the original, people said there are better version of the song here.
I honestly disagree, I absolutely love this version. The sound, while somewhat muddy is amazing.
Also, the guy who shot the video deserves some kind of cinematography award.
It just fits the songs vibe and looks georgous.

I think the "keyboards" are King Zapata, playing that 12 string, with some sort of vibrato or rotary effect. You can see it's tied to what he's playing on the guitar. I love how Zapata's parts add so much flavor on top of what Gary is doing.

I’m not sure of the name of the video or where it is but him and his band are in the UK and playing in the rain. Such a great version of this song. At some point his guitar shits out and he replaces it. It’s great, way louder and more angry, in your face tone. The crowd screams “all you wanna do is ride around, Gary. Ride Gary ride” over and over at the first. I love this version but check that one out, so good. Much love from Tulsa.

Hey Brother! Glad to see you doing your thing. I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on songs, and I am so excited that you're checking out a Gary Clark Jr. tune. GCjr is (IMO) one of the most exciting guitar players going right now. I always describe him as a Dark Side Lenny Kravitz. I hear stuff in his playing that reminds me of Lenny, but he's pissed. He's got some serious fire in his guts, and I love that so much. What comes out of him when he plays might be built on simple principles, but it's like he transports himself to another dimension when he plays. Also, an SG with P90s?! WHAT?? I need one. Great great stuff. Thank you for the tip about playing the 9 over the 5 chord. I will work on that!
Has anyone ever asked you to check out Roy Buchanan? I saw a reaction to Roy's Bluz, but the guy who did it (although seemingly super cool- would totally have a beer with the bloke) doesn't go as far into the theory of why it sounds as amazing as it does. Even if to just check out on your own, i'd say spark it up and watch the most underrated genius that's ever played the guitar.
Stay safe and well, and keep on rocking! Best wishes to the family as well! :)

Thank you for this one. I’ve been learning it from another live performance where, for the 4, he arpeggiates an Amin7 into Adim7 (that g to f# again). And because of him I’ve been throwing that f# into my pentatonic box, but my dumb brain though of it as the 2 so I never made the 9 is the 5th of the 5 chord connection.

If you want some guitarular gymnastics, you need to check out Gary Moore, The Messiah Will Come Again (Live) , an old Roy Buchanon song, who was an innovator in his own right. Don't know if you know of Gary or his music, he was one of the greats, mixing blues and shredding, this song shows some of all he had in his arsenal which was enormous. He played with Thin Lizzy a couple times to help out his old buddy Phil Lynott when he needed him, but preferred to stay with his solo work. He was in the running and involved with replacing Randy Rhodes as Ozzy's guitarist but had other works going on. Would love to see a reaction/analysis. I'm a new sub, love what I'm seeing so far! If you love murder ballads. (Just checked your Colter Wall - Kate McCannon)
    You should check out:
    Hill Country - Janie Lynn
    or check out:
    Hill Country - Dixie Darling
For just an awesome tune, not a murder ballad though.
    You will enjoy!

    Great job, man!
My suggestion: any songs of Circa Survive, it's so good! The vocals, the guitars, the drums.. Hope you like it!

Oh I would love that! They're my favorite band. I wonder what would be a good song to highlight the intricacies of how they weave it all together?

@@lucasmappa yea I mean obviously we're biased and it's hard to really pick what would be a good one to show the guitar work. even though it's always there and always incredible, the music presents a wall of sound for the vocals to surf with.
