Awesome tutorial, thank you so much =D 1:00 > (select the character: top bar: hit "select subject", fill in black) 2:51 > (select the 2nd focus/close area without the character, soften/accurate edges with select&mask, fill with gray: B=40% + soft rounded brush) 5:30 > (merge visible into a new layer) 5:55 > (copy and paste to a new channel layer, rename="alpha1": "shift+ctrl+V") 8:11 > (lens blur: depth map="alpha1")
Great tutorial. Rather than all the background being blur, commonly seen in photos, your explaining Depth Map and Alpha channels percentages of black (no blur) and Gray (percentages determines level of blur) gives me a sense of control in getting those layers exactly where it needs to be. Also gives it a 3D effect..Thanks!!
Very interesting tutorial - thank you! I can think of ways that this would be useful to me. The idea of shading the fill to control the amount of an effect is what struck me the most, and although you barely touched on it, I have a much better idea of how channels can be used.
Hey Colin, I did see this video a few weeks ago and have been using this technique since. I have also been using it with the brush at max feather and a large size brush, set the flow at 10 to 15%, leave the opacity at 100% build up the faded effect with each brush stroke. I also reduce the image on the screen to see the edges. On a new layer paint in black just like you do for each area shown in your Video when I need a fade-Away blur effect which looks very realistic doing it this way. What I love about this technique it’s by far the quickest and most realistic lens blur I have ever used. And I thought I had a pretty good depth of field ACTION which had so many steps, at the time it was a good solution until your tutorial came along. Thanks again.
Extremely helpful. Thank you so much. To answer your camera question, I've been a pro Pentax shooter since the 1980s, and am fully bought into that great system.
Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 18-105mm lens and Nikon D7000 with Sigma 10-20mm lens. Shoot mostly landscapes and automotive - American muscle cars, hot rods, classic cars...love your channel...
This is really interesting effect. I have taken a Digital Imaging 1 & 2 class, both using Photoshop, and this hasn't been covered. Thank you for doing this tutorial. I have been using an LG Phone with a camera, but last week, I got a new I-Phone, so I am learning my way around with it. Just loving it.
This tutorial is great. I'm actually using your tutorials for doing composition of images in which the key elements are primarily generated with 3D graphics software. When I do use photography, I use a Canon EOS Rebel T2i, which I've had for a long time. In addition to the lens that came with it, I have a couple of lenses I bought in the late 1980s to use with a Canon 35mm camera that died long ago. I continue to be amazed that those old lenses continue to work so well.
Canon 5D Mk2. Still great, still working perfectly and even better with vintage lenses ;). And thanks for the tutorial, but I found that a similar thing, just by applying gradients and improving it then works way better in my opinion.
Gradient is great tool when you have seamless (kind off) background. Since the immediate background (green foliage) has somewhat hard edge and seems like overhanding the great vista in my humble opinion this method works better.
Absolutely love this. I am furloughed so looking at upping my game and your videos are amazing! Thank you. I have subscribed and am going to be trying out your tutorials from now on ... I now have a more interesting depth Vegas sign image. Thank you :)
I really like your way of explaining, if you have some experience in taking a picture with camera can you make a video showing how do you setup your camera either indoor or outdoor & during the day & at night, Thank you
Nice tutorial! I was only wondering. Wouldn't it be non-destructive to make the copy a smart object then apply lens blur as a smart filter on the whole layer and then apply the depth mask as a layer mask over the smart filter lens blur? Correct me if i'm wrong!
When using studio strobes or speed lights Nikon D7100 and when using continues lights or natural light Sony a6000 with adapter for my Nikkor and Sigma lenses. Great tutorial...
Nice, but you shud try Smart Filter, so you always can go in and change you effect again and again and again. whit out make a copy of the background layers
I seem to have a glitch, can't see preview when I go into lens blur. I have no image unless I shut preview off. What do I do to fix this? Am using Photoshop 2020 on a windows system.
My friend this resource already exists a long time ago, since PS CS3. I do not know how people who do not know this very old tool still make as much success on youtube as master in photoshop. I have been using and teaching this tool since Photoshop CS3. I am ADOBE photoshop ACE in photoshop. Cheers.
I have also been teaching it for years, I don't think I ever said this was new? Some of the old tools are the best and a lot of newer users don't know them because most youtubers just focus on the new features, I have been writing Photoshop books since since Photoshop 6, not CS6.
You're welcome. I am curious though, if you don't use Photoshop, why do you watch Photoshop tutorials? Not a criticism, I'm happy you watch my tuts, just curious.
Mainly to find out if Affinity Photo can do the same which it seems it can. For example, It dosent have a Divide Blend mode, but I suspect once I work out what divide does then I will find the équivalant in AF...
I would watch more of these tutorials from Photoshop Cafe if - and only if - Colin stopped waving his arms around in such an aggressive and threatening manner. There is absolutely no need for it; he’s got the necessary vocabulary; he should use it.

You're the only one treating those "depth of field" methods so far (as far as the many videos I've watched). Good to know! Thanks

I use a Canon 5D Mark IV. I'm wondering if a gradient can be applied to the layers instead of a solid colour? So that the blurring is gradual.
Yes it can, I often combine a gradient with solid tones
Good tutorial as always-thank you. My main camera is a Nikon D750 with a Nikon D7100 as backup.
Nikon D500. Thanks for the tutorials.

I'm working with a smart object, what should I use instead of lens blur?
Use blur gallery
Nice, but you shud try Smart Filter, so you always can go in and change you effect again and again and again. whit out make a copy of the background layers
Sure that's an option, but clutters the tutorial.
I use a Sony a7lll for landscapes and a Canon 7Dll for birds and wildlife.
Recently got Canon EOS M50 for family vacation photos and videos

.... or you could have taken the pic with a bigger aperture with the correct d.o.f. in the 1st place?
Well, just in case you didn't or it didn't work out to enough of a background blur, this is a great way to rescue an image.
that was mentioned in the first minute of the video and I rattled off at least 1/2 dozen reasons ;)

Wish you’d go a little bit slower...
I will try
