They're gonna hear it, and even if they're luke-warm on the video itself, they'll be surprised by the revelation that this is the source of the joke. Then you put a hand on their shoulder and say "Now you know the truth." But what's that on your finger? It's the gom jabbar!

Neither my partner nor I knew (or know) anything about Dune but we saw the 2021 movie in theatres after hearing this audio and when the Gom Jabbar scene happened on screen they stage-whispered to me “WHATS THAT? ITS THE GOM JABBAR!”

That's how you know you're dealing with a top-tier "animating scenes from other people's shows" youtuber-- when they go the extra mile with little visual gags that aren't strictly necessary, but add to the video. I think that's part of what makes it more than just recreating someone else's content.
this is a very minor thing, but I appreciate how the dark skinned character has lighter skin on their palms! that's not even like a mandatory thing to animate but I see that lil detail and I think it's very cool, nice :3

Like their eyes are twice as big as their fists but if they open their teeny fists you get the pinkish-brown palm skin and that is pretty awesome

Before watching this, based on the thumbnail and how I imagined Gom Jabbar was pronounced, I thought it was a dental tool (that really pokey one they use on your gums) and they were just really weirdly saying ‘gum jabber.’
I love when Griffin is so determined to stick to a certain answer that he keeps steering his brothers' suggestions back to it
The boys have made me understand things I don't even pay attention to. When I watched Dune this year I already knew what Gob Jabbar was, the phrase "fear is the mind killer" and the whole box of pain thing. I had no idea how that info had entered my brain
This old MBMBAM clip was fear. You allowed it to pass over you and through you. When you finished listening to it you turned your inner-eye to see its path. The memory of listening to it had vanished. Only the concepts remained.

For some reason when he says "what's that in his drink" I always think he's about to pull out a deep cut from the novel and talk about "chaumurky" which is what they call poisoning your political enemies in their food in Dune.

A few years back I was waking down the street and a guy stopped me and tried to get my number. I let him know I wasn’t interested and he let it go, but then reached out to shake my hand, and on just Pure Instinct I did the full like intricate, 7 step secret handshake I do with my best friend, complete with an explosion at the end and everything. He just gave me this blank look and I got the hell outta there, biting my lips shut so I wouldn’t burst out laughing. Idk what came over me

I'm on book five of dune and I just heard this bit for the first time the other day. I died laughing out in public. People crossed the street to get away from me. My first thought as this was happening was that it would be such a good candidate for an animatic, thank you for delivering.
Handshakes hurt when hand-bones misalign under pressure; the misalignment occurs around the curled digits then transfers into the hand-bones: pointing the first two fingers straight when shaking hands is barely noticeable but disregards the hand-crush imperviously, the hand-bones aren't going to rotate unnaturally because the fingers haven't curled into position.
That's absolutely the number-one reason for handshakes to hurt. The number-two reason is, of course, being stabbed by the Gom Jabbar.
The willpower it took to not keep yelling lines from this at the screen while watching Dune 2...
I love the rare moments when it's Griffin and Travis riffing off each other while Justin sits quietly, only interjecting occasionally with a cackle.

I read the first dune book over thanksgiving weekend and have been re-listening to TAZ Balance (and the live shows which I skipped the first time through) and wow Clint brings up the Kwisatz Haderach at least three times, and it never lands, which is profoundly funny to me.
im so happy i knew what Dune was before discovering the Brothers McElroy, they reference it _a lot_ more than you'd think, not just Clint namedropping Kwisatz Haderach all the time in TAZ or this gom jabbar bit, i've heard so many other little bits referencing Dune and now all you non-nerdos can go and see an absolutely brilliant film adaptation of it.

So glad you did this bit not just because everything you make is exquisite, but the first time I heard this I hadn't read dune. Now I still haven't finished dune, but I read enough to get the joke (before I got very angry at the book and realized maybe it wasn't for me)

@@ianr7014 Friend, that's the *entire point*. Paul is the protagonist, but by golly is he not a good person. He even discusses how the Bene Gesserit planted these messiah tropes in the Fremen to be exploited later.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I knew it was all the point as I'd heard that before, but it's just a bit tired either way. I don't begrudge anyone who likes the books, of course.
The specific thing that irritated me was the use of women in the book and also the way binary gender is discussed. It was just a lot of the same ol', same ol' and I just could stand reading another sci-fi book like that. Again, don't judge or dislike anyone who likes the books, I just decided my time could be better spent elsewhere.

Seriously though, if someone ever hits you with that crusher handshake, the solution is to overreact. Shout in pain, say that you think they may have broken your hand, and repeatedly ask them "why did you do that?"
If you force them to confront it, and shame them in front of a crowd you can correct that behavior for life AND crush the a-holes spirit in the process

I legitimately just listened to this episode because I started the podcast from the beginning last year and I've been working my way through the episodes, so this was weirdly perfect timing for me! Haha

I did not know what a "Gom Jabbar" was and I thought the title was "Gom *Jabber*" as in (from the illustration) a finger-affixed needle that jabs goms. Goms of course meaning mouths. So, a golden toothpick or sorts.

I haven't listened to this episode yet and didn't catch it was about Dune at first, when I read 'gom jabbar' that sounded to me like something to do with gum? So I thought they'd suggest when shaking this man's hand to just go completely limp. Really put all the pressure on them to complete the handshaking ritual while your spirit will temporaliy take of their fleshy hand glove.
I had never heard of the gom jabbar before this bit, and seeing those words overlaid with a picture of a man wearing what appears to be a thimble/toothpick hybrid and my knowledge of The McElboys, I fully expected this bit to be about using a toothpick to get stuff out of your teeth. The Gum Jabber
