    I’m going to throw a possible cat amongst the pigeons here and say that being ultra hydrophobic could be it referring to how much it repels the water off the panel. How much is left on it at the end. If you look at the sheeting it actually ends up repelling more water than the beads. It’s definitely a claim that could be open to interpretation!
    Thanks for taking the time to make the video as always John!

    I am a very big fan of AF products. Was waiting for a review on this one. I have already ordered it. Where I live in the spring and summer it gets really dusty, so when it rains the beads leave brown spots all over the white paint, so the sheething is much better. Great review

  • @theseb1979
    @theseb1979 2 года назад +29

    When you have heavy water the sheeting action is preferred, so that you aren’t left with little spots that most products encourage because of the beading. I don’t know why the industry has become obsessed with beading, since I think sheeting is much better. The product is clearly hydrophobic - we saw that in your test. I am not sure why you marked it as x in that category, since you called the category beading / hydrophobic and it would appear to be more hydrophobic than the other product, judging by the amount of water left in each of the test rectangles

    • @ForensicDetailing

      hydrophobadidity :) The opposite of that is hydrophillic. The AF product is hydrophobic but not really ultra hydrophobic for me at least.

      Agreed I've tried several products which give great beadage but for me sheeting is the way to go on a black car. Im using Turtle Wax Graphene flex wax spray at the moment but may try this as the sheeting looks good.

    • @badboi4lyff
      @badboi4lyff 2 года назад +2

      I agree. Beading is a nightmare on a black car. I've recently tried turtlewax graphene and 303 graphene but have gone back to using infinity rapid detailer. About 2 weeks later and the car is still spotless.

    • @soapa4279
      @soapa4279 2 года назад +2

      This is probably going to be argued to death. But beading is a visual indicator that is easy for people to follow. When there is no more beading, you can assume to re-apply. Now yes we know that doesn't mean the product is gone, but for the vast majority of consumers, it's easy to tell.
      Or you end up with a product like DPC armor coating, where you can't even tell it's on the paint compared to virgin paint. Flat pools of water with slow sheeting, it VISUALLY looks like nothing is on the paint.

    • @mikesmith71

      Totally agree with you there theseb1979, to repel every drop of water in the form of a sheet seems to be a much more effective finish than just producing beads that dry and ruin all your hard work.

    I’ve used this on a white Golf GTI and 6 weeks in it looks superb and has a deep mirror like shine. You have to use it sparingly ( eg 3 pea sized dots for a bonnet, 4 for the roof, 2 for each door) if you don’t want to spend hours buffing. It took me less than 2 hours to do the whole car and has not needed a 2nd coat. It’s for all gloss paint so it went on all the body coloured plastics (bumpers & spoiler etc). If it lasts 6/8 months then I’ll let u know 🙂

    Good review. It’s amazing how some product instructions lack obvious detail. The label on one spray sealant I tried said a second coat could be added for extra gloss, but gave no clue as to how long to leave between coats. It also gave no info on dealing with overspray on glass or plastic. Can’t understand the obsession with beading, surely the less time water is in contact with the paint the better? Perhaps the beading fans like testing waterspot removers…..lol. Looking forward to the multi product test on an actual car. Pan the Organiser did this with about 20 products on one car.

    I used this today on my sons car. I started with a foam pad to apply it, but it felt as though it was adding swirls, yikes !!! And it was brand new!!
    I changed to a microfibre pad and it made such a difference. It felt like it was working to product better and left a more even application.
    Application and removal was very easy and the gloss is undeniable, but I found it could produce a slight dust as well.
    I would recommend using this if you need a quick waxing of your car, but I’m not sure about the filling capabilities….

    Glad you reviewed this. I've spent hundreds in the past getting my cars detailed (M140i & Caterham 7 420r) when in reality all I really want to do is hide the swirls, but like you say, the word "filler" is frowned upon. The single coat BRG paint finish to my 7 is particularly soft - the delicate first wash following detailing put no end of fine scratches in it, so this product may be what I need - as a former M140i owner yourself, plus your M4, if you can recommend something to hide the faint scratches on the satin finish instrument binacle that would be great too - I'm already on my second after the main dealer valet jabbed at it with the nozzle of a Hoover which they then agreed to replace, but my most gentle of dusting from me has left a haze already on the replacement, so I'm a bit fed up. First world problem though...!

    I like the idea of this and might give it a try.

    This is a great product for the Halfords buyer.

    • @79blustone
      @79blustone 2 года назад +1

      Fair comment, machine polishing can be a bit of a leap- but its good to push yourself into a challenge! You can always hand polish any swirls out- Autoglym resin polish is still very relevant today like its always been- I still use it today and has a purpose. You should buy some simple resin polish and start with that, get a neutral car shampoo the put a light ceramic coating on- its dead easy. It'll last 6 months or so, bit you can learn from that and build up to a full on decon and machine polish then more durable coatings. Just give it a go 👍

      Means more water on the car when drying and means more chance of water spots , that’s why most pro detailers prefer a sheeting product and if you got a black vehicle and your washing it in the summer then the last thing you want is a beading product and the sheeting product is exactly what you want , also when you compare sheeting vs beading , beading doesn’t mean more protection and sheeting doesn’t mean less protection

    Great video but in my mind you're misunderstanding hydrophobicity, if water can't stay on the surface to form beads that surface must be more hydrophobic ( Hydrophobic is a property of a substance that repels water. It means lacking affinity for water, and tending to repel or not to absorb water.) The way the water from the hose gathers together and runs off an almost flat surface in your first test would say to me that it is extremely hydrophobic

    Eh graphene is just marketing foo foo. Yeah it’s different, you can prefer it or not for several reasons. Price being one. Filling quality is important as a business owner, it’s why I use Jescar ultra lock+ on every wash & wax; fills and deepens the paint. People think you buffed the paint half the time. Makes a one step correction look like a 2 step. Filling might be gawked at by nerds on forum boards; but they work terrifically for the 99% of population that doesn’t polish their car every 6 months.
    Edit: after seeing your close ups of how much it filled, it completely eliminated 4000 grit sanding marks from bad washes. Insane amount of filling power and you can see a clear line of delineation and deepening. Impressive stuff I wonder if a gallon of that is cheaper than a gallon of JUL+?

    Auto finesse Graphene liquid wax vs Bilt Hamber Hydra wax John, which would your choice be?

    Auto Finesse just doesn't do it for me, they seem more focused on image over the quality of their products. They like the flashy labeling,detailing videos, detailing studio etc when they should really be more focused on product quality. Tripple and citrus power are the only ones I'd bother to purchase

      I love comparing Auto Finesse to Bilt Hamber. AF is for posers who care more about image and 'brand', Bilt Hamber is basically the antithesis of that.

    Never been convinced about Auto Finesse, I always think they blow their budget on their packaging instead! Unrealistic claims and always underperforms in my experience. Filler! Hmm no. You can't cheat on doing a job properly, especially when there is a huge range of product to deal with swirl, this product promotes laziness. This video to me was an exposè on why you shouldn't buy this, but thats my take. £25 is a lot and considering what amazing products Jon has shown on this channel already. You can buy Gyeon can coat (old version for £20) and a bottle of cheap polish- hand buff some of the swirls out and still have change left over. Anyway, I feel like I've ranted on about this a bit too much, it does something that's better then not applying anything on bare paint- just about...😉

    I thought that water behaviour was really interesting, it's a sheeter like you said, that could be a real winner actually. Do you have any your Nova Lustre left? It feels like that would be a really good comparison of similar products with similar USPs (liquid sealant with filler properties and 6 months longevity). Tbh you don't need to run the test, just offer an opinion, I don't want to give you more work or be that guy saying "you should have tested against this" because I know the effort that's gone in to just doing this.

    Graphene products in detailing are a complete marketing gimmick. The only difference I've seen in the full blown coatings is that they sell you the traditional ceramic coating like CQUK 3.0 except it's slightly more hydrophobic and they tend to be slick instead of the common "grabby' feeling you get with most SiO2 coatings. Anyway what I'm getting at is, they're actually just selling us the good ol' SiO2 coating with veeery slight improvements in the hydrophobicity/slickness department, slapping Graphene in the name and charging nearly double for a bottle. (CQUK3.0 is $1.60/ml vs Ethos Graphene Matrix Coating's $3/ml. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they add that cheap graphene oxide powder to the coating in minute amounts just so they're not lying as much, but still I find the whole thing ridiculous and disingenuous. Another thing that bothers me is that the guy from Ethos says their coatings are completely formulated and made in house, when it's all but obvious that they're manufactured by B&B Blending, just like the Adam's coating (which is much cheaper BTW). The Adam's coating adds the UV additive so they can sell you a flashlight that shows the high spots you left behind. I won't complain, as I'm sure some newbies might find that useful and it's optional, but you could always just be really careful and methodical with your wiping and you should have no issues without the light. Switching back over to the Ethos and their wild claims, I'll just copy paste a tiny section off of their site: "Future maintenance, such as clay barring and light polishing to repair possible imperfections in the coating, can be performed without sacrificing its integrity, resulting in the ability to finally achieve a near-permanent coating." I mean, that's a load of bs. If they mean using a product like CarPro's Essence Plus, that's not really polishing, as it's meant to be used with a finishing pad and has no abrasives in it, just cleaners and the ceramic component that's meant to revive a coating that's near the end of its life, not exactly a "let's take these swirls off and the coating will be beading like crazy as if nothing happened" as they seem to be portraying with that statement. Here's the real kicker though, the guy from Ethos claims that their graphene coating is a pure graphene coating and not a ceramic coating with graphene in it. If you look at Adam's page, though, you'll notice that in their Graphene Ceramic Coating page there is a section that asks "Why is graphene still called a ceramic coating?" and right underneath, the answer they provide is as follows: Graphene alone will not form a coating. Period. Graphene is a flat, non-reactive plane, it will not form a bond with other things. Graphene coatings are coatings with graphene molecules grafted onto the ceramic backbone. If you think of the graphic of the graphene oxide, the tails you see sticking up are what is grafted onto the ceramic molecule. The ceramic molecule bonds with the car, and the Graphene portion of the molecule is on top, forming the surface of the coating.

    • @groundcontrol6876
      @groundcontrol6876 2 года назад

      Here's a link of him saying "The Truth About Graphene Coatings" ( ruclips.net/video/m1Dkg_psc2c/видео.html) where he talks about his product as if it wasn't a ceramic coating at all and it's a completely different thing as it's a "graphene coating" and how he didn't wanna do exactly what he's doing which is slapping the word graphene on the products in order to sell via the marketing hype. Don't get me wrong, I've seen the performance of this coating and it's actually very impressive in terms of hydrophobics and it might well be durable (though I can't personally attest to that). The problem lies in the smoke and mirrors and dishonesty in order to sell you that product. I can't stand lying and lack of transparency. If the product is good, you can market it honestly and make great sales. Being dishonest from the getgo and building that reputation, though, will do the complete opposite.

      theres some really good articles on graphene in pro detailers. And some blind tests going on with graphene coatings.. and graphene infused waxes v sio2 and plane wax. marketting is over the top in lots of cases for sure but its the same with every single industry on the planet. its worse in the USA than the UK. In the UK we sort of resent over the top marketting, even our TV adverts are different to USA ones.

      @@ForensicDetailing Yeah I agree that overpromising marketing is not just limited to detailing, but detailing is one of those cases where it has the worst kind of marketing where most of the claims are based on how they sound and catering to emotion rather than based on reality, hard data and logic. That’s why I love companies like CarPro so much. They don’t try to oversell you and instead overdeliver. I’m sure the UK is much different, it’s just a different culture altogether. You guys have THE BEST mechanics out there. Hell there’s even a great show/channel I found recently and it’s a mechanic from the UK with his friends doing cool stuff while also being very educational. He’s called Edd China.
