I recently purchased a used 2012 Mac with a 1.12 TB Fusion Drive*. As part of making a clean install of High Sierra, I somehow formatted the Fusion drive into 2 discrete drives - 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD. Some may like this but I observed a slow down so decided to create a fusion drive.
This video is about re-creating a fusion drive and see how it speeds up the boot-up and other processses.
*Fusion Drive: Fusion Drive is Apple' hybrid drive which combines a hard disk drive (HDD) with a NAND flash storage (SSD) and presents it as a single Core Storage managed logical volume with the space of both drives combined. The operating system automatically manages the contents of the drive so the most frequently accessed files are stored on the faster flash storage, while infrequently used items move to or stay on the hard drive.
    Commands used:
Short Cut to open a utility/service: cmd + space....and then type for the utility of the choice:
    terminal - to open terminal
disk utility - to open disk utility
    Commands used with in terminal:
    1. Listing disks (drives) - diskutil list (note HDD and SSD identifiers)
    2. Create a CoreStorage - diskutil cs create MacintoshHD identifier1 identifier2
2.a Assuming identifier 1 is disk0 and identifier2 is disk1, the command would be: diskutil cs create MacintoshHD disk0 disk1
    3. Generate CoreStorage information - diskutil cs list (note the Logical Volume Group information available on the top)
    4. Create a logical volume from already created CoreStorage - diskutil cs createVolume logicalvolumegroup jhfs+ MacintoshHD 100%
4.a. Assuimg the logicalvolumegroup id is 8354AFC3-BF97-4589-A407-25453FD2815A, the command would be diskutil cs createVolume 8354AFC3-BF97-4589-A407-25453FD2815A jhfs+ MacintoshHD 100%
NOTE: If for any reason, the re-install is unable to complete, repeat the process step by step after checking your broadband and you should be able to get this done.
Adding a comment as I can't answer my question. My HD turned out to be a Fusion Drive - Apple's custom implementation of a Hybrid Drive which is a combination of a smaller SSD (Flash) drive and larger traditional HDD. In my case, size of SSD was 128G and HDD was 1TB.
With a single partition the OS sees the combination as a single drive - FusionDrive. However when you try and create a partition, it will reserve the OS installed part of HDD and entire SSD as "core storage" which can never be merged with the partitioned part - the only way is to format the entire drive.
If I were to have a HDD or SSD, it would be pretty straight forward to merge the partitions, unlike what I have faced due to the way "coreStorage" reservation.
I didn't this and I kept on doing several things to merge the partitions into a single partitions and while doing so, accidentally erased some.
Finally got it solved by booting in Firmware Recovery mode (cmd + alt + R) and erased everything and then merging the partitions manually using the following command:
    diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk2 GPT JHFS+ New 0b
Now that's HDD taken care of, but this lead to splitting of Fusion Drive. While this may be desired by some to have more control by having 2 discrete HDs, I prefer to leave it to the OS find the best way to deal with it.
So, followed steps in support.apple.... to merge the Fusion drive that was split.
That's why I created this video to demonstrate the last step.
This wasn't quite straight forward to me as I am new to Mac OS, despite being fluent in Linux.
Hope this information helps a Mac newbie like who doesn't mind getting their dirty by exploring things under the hood :-)
    Good luck.

Does it reformat the drives? Is there any risk of data loss? Is the disk space on the SSD used as a mirror of data on the HDD (eg. Does the total disk space of the Fusion drive = the SSD + the HDD capacity, or is it the HDD capacity with the SSD mirroring frequently used files?

Fusion Drive will work without issues on High Sierra? Or APFS is the problem?

    • @NagaYanamandala
      @NagaYanamandala  6 лет назад

Yes of course. With a healthy fusion drive, the OS knows where to go - gets installed on the flash drive and uses flash storage to runs it's processes. With a split fusion drive, you can manually install the OS on the flash drive but the OS would lose the ability to effectively manage the data and this slows down the OS. If you install the OS on the disk drive, it's even worse as it slows it down straight away!

Yes. Two INTERNAL drives. You cannot do this between two external drives or an internal and external drive. It won’t let you do it since if the external drive became disconnected, the hard drive would cease to function. I would imagine a serious system crash.
