I recently did a highrise and installed 300-400 of the kohler skirted toilets. They may seem intimidating, being a little different from floor mount installs, but they're actually a breeze and this video is a great install guide.
I'm not a plumber and never installed a toilet before. I bought a Toto bidet that was skirted and uses the same type trap. I had to drill new holes in the porcelain with diamond bits. The rest I thought was pretty simple. Love that Toto BTW. Game changer no more toilet paper.
I’ve been thinking about getting a bidet but I’m in a rental unit and I don’t know much about them. I’m sick of toilet paper because most of them are made so cheaply. Plus it seems like such a waist.
A skirted toilet (non Koehler) isn’t that tough if you plan ahead and have a few extra items to help out. It IS a two-person job, but I’ve got it down to needing an unskilled extra person for about 15 seconds. “Extras” you’ll need: 2 “blocks” - pieces of scrap 4x4 lumber about 12” long (nailed up 2x4 scraps to make 4x4 works fine) 2 pieces of 3/8” or 1/2” flexible plastic tubing about 8-10 inches long After affixing the flange bolts and setting the wax ring (or other seal), place one block (on its side) on the floor between the wall and the toilet flange, centered on the flange. Place the other block on the floor just in front of the flange, also centered on the flange. Pick-up the toilet and set it on the blocks, approximately centered over the flange. Now the toilet is now “hovering” about 4” above the floor and flange and nobody is straining to hold it there. On one side of the toilet, pass a piece of tubing up through the bolt hole in the toilet and then down over the flange bolt. Do the same on the other side. Shift the toilet on the blocks as needed to line things up. The tubing pieces will act as guides for threading the bolts into the toilet. With your extra person standing by, pick up the toilet about 1/2” and have your “helper” snatch out the 2 blocks, then lower the toilet onto the flange. Pull the tubing off the bolts, make sure everything is aligned as you want, and bolt the toilet into place.
I have a question for Roger. my experience with wax seals is not great, even whin installed by journeyman plumbers. I have used the Fluidmaster 7530 Universal seal to great sucess. Can it be used instead of the wax ring? Thank you for any help. Tom
Just completed the installation of the second skirted toilet. It was technically a 12 inch rough in, but there was a heat register behind the existing toilet. The exposed trap fit easily over this. I had to buy a 10 inch rough in adapter. $90!!!! Kohler would not let me do an exchange! I had to drill through the tile floor to mount the attachment brackets. I'd never drilled tile before, but some inexpensive ceramic bits from Harbor Freight and a RUclips video made it easy. The first toilet I did had improperly installed tank bolts that didn't extend far enough to attach the tank and it took a while to make them work. Same thing with this one, plus one of the bolts was missing completely! Kohler sent me a set of new bolts without charge, and did so fairly quickly. So, both are in and not leaking. But the refill valves on both are both are hinky; sometimes they work and fill the tank properly, sometimes they shut off before the tank is properly filled, and sometimes they don't shut off completely, leaving the toilet running. Even when they work properly they take 2-3 minutes to refill the tank. Yes, I used brand new fill hoses, and they both do the same thing.
Despite being on the younger side of the industry I'm never big on changing, but that new style of flange attachment is a total game changer, the ease of installation along with it solving a lot of issues with flange heights really makes for a better installation, customers seem to like how they are much easier to clean too.
Top Tip! We have this persuade skirted toilette from Kohler. The brass nut inserts broke free and the seat came loose. We had to remove the toilette to retighten the seat. Here is a fix and frankly if I were installing it first I would do this. Install the seat first before mounting the toilette while you have access. Get rid of those brass inserts it came with and go get a couple of 1/4 20 toggle bolts at the hardware store. Install the seat using those as they are long enough to bind in both directions against the form of the ceramic underneath. From now on you can loosen and tighten the seat without taking the toilette off. Since this is the Kohler quick snap seat you don't need to remove or completely loosen the bolts so this trick works. Just don't ever loosen them enough for the toggle bolt to fall off or you will be taking the toilette off.
I’m a master plumber in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia. I stay away from Ferguson like the plague. Ferguson has become obscenely expensive. I don’t know what is going on with them but it seems like the salesmen are setting their own prices own material.
Installed an EAGO brand toilet 5 years ago - same 'skirted' design although I wasn't aware that's what it was called. It had a similar ABS assembly. Easy enough to install. The only minor pain was hooking up the supply line. There's a vanity cabinet on one side and the tub on the other, so I had to reach back there blind.
I installed several Koehler Persuade skirted toilets. They are a bear to install to be sure and this is a big improvement. But my bigger grip is that if/when you need to replace the flush valve you need to remove the toilet to get to the valve mounting bolts!
Curious whether it is a Philips or flathead screwdriver on their cam system. We have three of these but they must be an early generation or the builder didn't install them as they aren't 12” from wall and I cannot engage any cam screw on either side so I can’t get the bowl off the floor. None of the Kohler videos match my persuade valves. Kohler sent me a new fill and dual flush valve and the top button None were the same as the ones I was trying to replace and the button couldnt even get through the lid. Fortunately I could get the tank off because they had clipped the tank nuts in the bowl.
ive been an apprentice for about a year now and personally not a fan of skirted if i got the option, makes an easy one man job into a two man job and in the wealthier housing where every fixture is the most expensive it can get and theres personal cubbies for these guys it is a real pain, not to mention i personally feel like a smaller drain line made of abs will not hold up in the long term compared to the more basic toilets. but i havent installed this specific one yet so 🤷♂️
@@RogerWakefield Thanks for the video. You didn’t show how you got to the bolts for the tank, the outside ones might be easy, but what about the middle one? Can a Fernco waxless ring be used? Where and how do you attach the water line? Thanks….Jim
How is that plastic part and those screws nut thingamajig gonna hold up especially if have and you have to remove it. Or snake it out ro plunge it and it leaks where the 2 pieces come together under skirt.
Can we see a no-cut full installation videos? Also i believe the tank is more tricky for unexperienced plumbers, i remember it was quite hard to put ur hand to the bottom (inside) of the tank unless you mess with it.
There ain’t be a no cut video coming ever lol. I respect Roger and I can tell he is a certified legitimate badass plumber. But this is the internet. Every “install” video is edited to look insanely easy. Not hating here. It’s all love roger
I remember the first time installing the Kohler skirted toilet pissed me off so much because the bolts would not start and eventually I was able to get both in after fighting it. Ever since then have never had a problem. Still don’t know to this day what I was doing wrong lol
@Roger Wakefield Did you have a helper to sit the bowl and tank down on your plastic connector? Any tips on setting an older model where the tank bolts are not exposed and it appears that the tank and bowl must be attached because the unit fits flush to the wall? Or tips on setting the L brackets that the side bolts go into on the old models? Thanks Roger.
Just curious do you prefer using a wax ring or waxless seal? My father in law is a retired plumber and he despises waxless seals. Can you do a video on the pros and cons of both?
I installed this toilet and for me it’s way too heavy to lift with tank on. Putting the tank on later in a small space is a nightmare, the back nut and washer were extremely hard to reach. I had to put painters tape to hold the washers. The racket has too be the exact size, no room for an adjustable wrench. I had to change the flush valve for a non Kohler brand because the yellow gaskets kept leaking. Had to redo the whole tank process. The three bolts take forever to get even. I had a clog and the toilet leaked at the rubber seal , seem like a real weakness of design. The 360 flush feature is great, really cleans the bowl. If doin over I would get the old fashioned 360 flush.
Have you ever made a video on comparisons of wax rings and the rubber no-wax rings? Pros/Cons? Especially to you point in this video about blind setting the toilet and misaligning the ring. Thanks.
Looks like the drain system has a smaller diameter than the traditional units that go straight into the floor drain which may cause more clogs when larger amount of waste is flushed. Any issues with that?
Yes we had them in the hotel I use to work(I retired ) the plastic part often breaks , don't use an auger it will also break its cheap and clogs up all the time.
Hi rodger, I have a question unrelated to toilets, sorry. I work as a plumber in California and I just got a call from someone who lives 2 hours away with a leak in his water main under the slab. He had mentioned a thing about Aquapea, I have never heard of the product but I had found a 30 second clip of you talking about it but not really giving any answers to the questions you had asked in the clip. So my question is, is Aquapea a good product? Does it cause any damages to fixtures or cause potential clogs in the lines? Is it one of those "works as advertised" things? I'm not normally one to look for shortcuts but I'm interesting in knowing if the product works or not so I don't feel so dumb next time a customer brings it up.
If I’m not mistaking: Toto invented the adapter floor flange (distance to wall, 3 models: 10’’, 12’’, 14’’ adapters) almost 20 years ago. Their patent rights are long passed so other companies are making the same, why: inventory. The toilet itself is always the same, only the adapters change. Toto also starter the BIG flap in the tank of the toilet. Toto has not innovated since (from my point of view).
Just installed Kohler Gleam 2 and the bowl bolts seam too long. I tried slowly going side to side but after the threads run out the bolt is not snug in the side of the skirt. As if the bolts are too long.
I have the 14 in rough in model. The instructions are different because the cam assembly are not on the T bolts. The instructions said to drill 2 holes into the ground, but I'm not sure how to install the anchors.
Is it possible to get a hardware kit or other bolts? I bought my toilet back in 22' and never installed it. Went to install it yesterday and the nuts and bolts for the flange were not in there. Suggestions?
I point blank tell customers that I charge extra if they want a skirted toilet as I can't stand working with them. Changing anything on them is a nightmare and mounting one on the seal is a pain.
You have to install the tank before you drop it down on the flange because you can get to the tank bolts once the base/ bowl is set, plus you will have issues with your water valve. They look great, but it’s not for every application.
Just installed a Kohler Gleam skirted toilet (1st one for me) and was not impressed overall. Took me much longer than the traditional toilets and I'm still wondering if the porcelain to ABS seal will hold up. As far as looks, it's great. My wife opted to spend the extra $50 to go with the skirted look, to my surprise.
In the age where sales overrun quality control and execution of installation getting questionable, it’s really refreshing that someone is caring for trade standards. Thanks sir
Just installed one of these a couple days ago. Easy install but I don’t trust that it’s going to stay put over time. I tightened both screws down to the max and still had a tiny bit of side to side play.
That's great - but how do you remove the toilet? Do you just pull it out of the rubber collar once the toilet is all unscrewed and water line disconnected
my problem is my plumber screwed up the rough in and i have my pipe way too close to the wall. can i reverse this and use this toilet to move it forward?
Alot of people on here complaining about skirted toilets are ones who haven't even tried to install one. I just installed 3 of these kohlers in my house and it was pretty easy. Sure...at first it was a bit intimidating and even I was like... this sucks why did I buy this since it was a bit different than the typical toilet... But after reading the instructions and doing it once it honestly wasnt really that big of a deal.
I'm ready to win any of the new Kohler toilets which will replace any of my current Kohler toilets. I do love the new Irvine skirted toilet, perfect for my Powder room and gee what a conversation piece. Jeannette
Recently I got caught looking stupid, did a basic toilet replacement in a restaurant. Im so use to 12” rough that I just grabbed a 12. Got there and started working and thought something didn’t look normal. 10” rough 🤦♂️
I’m not convinced that poop will not get stuck in that small 90 degree floor flange adapter. I’m even more concerned that a toilet auger will damage the adapter. These skirted toilets have been around for less than ten years and I would read reviews before purchasing.
I mean, we break plastic hair brushes and toys that get stuck in the trap all the time with our auger! How long is this ABS trap going to last? Im not confident it will hold up in 10 years.
I'd like to suggest that you use a 1/4' drive ratchet and 10" extension with 7/16 deep socket to tighten the assembly to the flange. A wrench or nut driver will not reach well enough. I've installed a bunch of these type of toilets. Get the ratchet and socket if you're gonna do this.
Just did a Kohler Dream for my wife in *Her* bathroom. Took me 35min after the old one was yanked. Such a damn good toilet! Nice and heavy and a rational size... No more pp tucking if I have to use it. You boys know what I mean! Damn fine unit. And a nice Flush as well..
Does anyone know if I use the 14inch trap adapter..which is my rough in..would it bring the bowel closer to the wall in addition to closing the gap or just close the gap(between the wall and tank)..I need every inch i can get..small bathroom..thanks to anyone who can help..
Opened 3 boxes at HD to find one without defects on porcelain. Directions suck. The system of plastic brackets wont get tight enough to keep toilet from turning, on trun too much ans -snap the plastic mounting nut retainer broke inside. FAIL ON DESIGN! I suggest caulking on base , because a home inspector will wiggle toilet and say its loose because it turns. Im returning it because of poor finish on the porcelain rim and broken plastic. I have done hundreds of toilets, not a fan of rhe plastic mounting brackets.
There is one is set like this that I couldn't for the life me get my thick fingers in the the hole and I was getting super pissed but the ladies daughter that wanted the install of those cute toilet was near and she had skinny fingers so I had her screw it to the floor shook it a couple times and sat on it make sure the wax took...
The biggest thing I think you guys forget to point out for the do it yourself or is to mark a plum line outside of where the skirted toilet would sit marking where the holes will line up so that they can drop the toilet straight down without an issue, and that you use a rubber ring instead of a wax ring so that they can reset the toilet if needed.
As a home owner, this is the first toilet (Kohler Gleam), that I have installed and I am 69. So much easier than I ever expected. I am surprised at all the bitching going one here.
The reason I installed 2 of these in my home is that there are no flat foot or bolts at the bottom where condensation always collects dust. The second reason was that the tank-top lid is flat instead of domed, so kleenex boxes, etc., stay in place. What I learned after installing the first one is they flush right now...I mean instantly. I was scared when I unpacked the first box but it all made simple, perfect sense and is actually easier than the normal toilet install.
I wish there is more attention to the smart devices that they offer. I know most of the plumbers I know shy away from them. I am guessing because they are I.T. Oriented. Smart devices are the direction a lot of homeowners are wanting to go.
Great job Kohler for giving a template for there installation process in every toilet package, just need a hammer drill for tile installs and the system is great, BTW this is old tech already!
I recently did a highrise and installed 300-400 of the kohler skirted toilets. They may seem intimidating, being a little different from floor mount installs, but they're actually a breeze and this video is a great install guide.

Skirted toilets are a great solution to a problem that nobody has.
A skirted toilet (non Koehler) isn’t that tough if you plan ahead and have a few extra items to help out. It IS a two-person job, but I’ve got it down to needing an unskilled extra person for about 15 seconds.

2 pieces of 3/8” or 1/2” flexible plastic tubing about 8-10 inches long
After affixing the flange bolts and setting the wax ring (or other seal), place one block (on its side) on the floor between the wall and the toilet flange, centered on the flange. Place the other block on the floor just in front of the flange, also centered on the flange.

Pull the tubing off the bolts, make sure everything is aligned as you want, and bolt the toilet into place.
That sounds like expert level advise on these installs!

Make them flat and level…
I tried and failed. You definitely need a floor that’s flat as a pa cake.

It's a 2" trap just like the standard toilet have a 2" integral trap
poop will clog this toilet and its a pain to service it.
Kohler toilets are the best but bad thing is they know it too have you seen the price of a Kohler toilet , but the big flush valve is why it's so good
How would you do the TOTO MS900CUMFG#01 Neorest NX1 easier? ive installed a couple of these they are so irritating. Any secrets?
I don’t believe I’ve ever installed one of those before.
What fastens it to the floor? I rewatched and I must be missing something
So, when it pulls the toilet down, doesn't that pull the plastic to wax seal up?
no (they didn't show it because the video's terrible, but they bolted the plastic to the floor)
I don't know what kind of trap is inside that toilet
but you're going to have a hell of a time getting an auger to reach the sewer line.
We just installed a Kohler Gleam. I have never had to use an auger on a toilet and hopefully never will.
Most skirted toilets are hard to pick up and get down safely because theres no where to grip
I only installed American standard
Wall hung toilet and bidet toilet?
Does anyone know if I use the 14inch trap adapter..which is my rough in..would it bring the bowel closer to the wall in addition to closing the gap or just close the gap(between the wall and tank)..I need every inch i can get..small bathroom..thanks to anyone who can help..
Looks relatively simple for a skirted toilet.
why is the ring flush with the floor and not on top?
I like his old background
kohler reinventing the wheel.
Good video thanks.
100x better than American Standards skirted toilet...... I've installed these a few times for customers and they aren't bad at all.
American Standard skirted toilets are a pain to install. Horrible engineering.
Flagstaff plumber
Love it like it
Got to install two neorest totots last week. Was a lot of fun. These skirted toilets are nothing.
Have you ever had to work on a Fresca toilet? Oh what joy.
I am not convinced that this wont clog up in that plastic pinch point. Prove me wrong
A little dish soap on the flange will slide it right on.
I have done hundreds of toilets, not a fan of rhe plastic mounting brackets.
putting toilet tank with such a small tool was not easy lol😂
Cool !
Changing toilets are as easy as changing brakes
There is one is set like this that I couldn't for the life me get my thick fingers in the the hole and I was getting super pissed but the ladies daughter that wanted the install of those cute toilet was near and she had skinny fingers so I had her screw it to the floor shook it a couple times and sat on it make sure the wax took...
The biggest thing I think you guys forget to point out for the do it yourself or is to mark a plum line outside of where the skirted toilet would sit marking where the holes will line up so that they can drop the toilet straight down without an issue, and that you use a rubber ring instead of a wax ring so that they can reset the toilet if needed.
p trap pan cheaper and better less of a flap
It’s a solution for a non existing problem. Plus they are 1200 per toilet.
Why wouldn't the toilet ever tighten securely? Need a full threaded bolt.
Bravissimo
Looks great. I want one.
I wish there is more attention to the smart devices that they offer. I know most of the plumbers I know shy away from them. I am guessing because they are I.T. Oriented. Smart devices are the direction a lot of homeowners are wanting to go.
I'm not sure I want my toilet posting on facebook...
Well then make sure to not set it up to do so.
Great job Kohler for giving a template for there installation process in every toilet package, just need a hammer drill for tile installs and the system is great, BTW this is old tech already!
uk toilet so much simplier
The best thing plummers could is install toilets that are easy to clean. 😅
If a toilet confuses your plumber, call another plumber.
Why did change his background
Wow i hate these toilets with a passion but after your first install you’ll remember it easily
I hate installing these things. You are both sweating after you came back from mounting the tank too
It’s 105 here in Texas and my shop has no A/C. Truly the install was the easy part.
I would say no Roger 😂 be a Steve Lav and be like I'm not setting this toilet... It's just a poo poo vessel
Any plumbers in Missouri? Here in MO they are pathetic 60% are either lazy or don’t want to work. Very sad how ppl have become lazy lately.
That looks like elon musk invented a toilet and called it a cyber toilet
Now if there were an easier way to attach the tanks,…
Kohler screwed up with those awful aqua pistons. Their best toilets are the Wellworth Ingeniums from the 2000's IMO
