I went to Amsterdam last week and I was greatly (too much I confess) inspired by this video and decided to shoot my own version of the canal cruise. So thank you Richard for all the comments and replies you have written, there are useful technical tips in them. Can't wait to see your future videos and learn from your work.
+Richard Lackey yeah man actually on RUclips of course but my handle on social media is ObiWanNatoli. Just subscribed to your page. Looking forward to diving into more of your work
Hi Anton, yes, surprisingly you can grade fairly well in Resolve as long as the highlights aren't clipped. I've found shooting during midday sun can be difficult, but early morning, and of course golden hour late afternoon into evening is great. I'll be uploading some step by step color grading breakdowns soon.
This is the best iPhone video footage Ive seen! Amazing. What is your setup when filming? Just iPhone and handheld? Do you use any mobile lenses or nd filters and if so, what do you recommend? Thanks for sharing your amazing work!
Hi, thanks so much! This is actually my least favorite out of the iPhone work I've been doing. The light was a bit too low and I feel focus is not 100% pin sharp, but it was just about good enough to share. This earlier one is better: ruclips.net/video/UYVrsXI0kYI/видео.html and I'm working on another one now which I'm quite proud of. It will be online later this week or the weekend. On this there was minimal stablization done in DaVinci Resolve, as I was shooting from a canal boat and it was really steady and smooth on the water. No mobile lenses or ND filters. The light was low, so no ND's were needed. I've found some additional mobile lenses are not sharp all the way to the edges, and the wide angle lenses vignette a bit too much for my liking. So far optically I think the iPhone lens itself gives the best quality when left alone.
Before I ask my question, let me tell you...your videos convinced me to dump my big, ungainly iPhone 7Plus for the new SE. I really missed the headphone jack but was afraid I was going to sacrifice video quality making the swap so a big THANKS for showing me that it IS possible to produce such GORGEOUS footage with the SE! Your videos are breathtaking and your post is flawless. Here's my question...I was trying to set my FilmicPro to the same 8 bit 4:2:0 setting as this video but I dont see that option in the FilmicPro settings when setting the app to Filmic Extreme (100mbps). I only see 16:9, 17:9, 2:59:1, 1:1, 2:2:1, 2:76:1, 4:3 and 2:39:1. Is one of these settings equivalent to the 4:2:1 setting that you display at the start of the video? Thanks ever so much!
Hi Flo, thanks so much for the comments. You'll get very similar results using Filmic Pro from both iPhone SE and 7 / 7 Plus to be honest, the one thing I do like about the 7 Plus is the second telephoto camera. Ok, to answer your question, when we talk about 4:2:0 (or 4:2:2 or 4:4:4) it is actually referring to chroma sub sampling, not the image aspect ratio. So if you set your aspect ratio to 16:9 you are using the same settings I do. The color information is encoded in 8-bit 4:2:0 anyway regardless of any other settings, so no need to worry about it, there is nothing more to set. In fact 4:2:0 chroma sub sampling is not great, it's one of the down sides to shooting with a consumer device, but it doesn't have to hold you back, you can still get great results.
I liked the telephoto camera in the 7Plus, too, but not enough to give up my heaqdphone jack. I will have to learn more about the chroma sub sampling settings - not familiar with that yet. Thanks for the info! So do you shoot in 16:9 and then insert the bars in post to get the anamorphic look?
Well, I crop to 2.35:1 ratio in post. I edit and color grade using DaVinci Resolve, and in the software it's just a drop down menu to select output blanking on your timeline. For chroma sub sampling there is no setting, in the case of Filmic Pro (or any video app on a phone) it's permanent, I wrote an article explaining what it is here: www.cinema5d.com/chroma-subsampling/ Anamorphic has more to it than just cropping wide. It's actually an optical squeeze of the image when shooting, and this is achieved only using anamorphic lenses or adaptor such as the Moondog labs lens. I don't shoot this true anamorphic because I don't have a lens for it. Would love to though. Then in post production the image is stretched out again to be wide. It also affects the bokeh, or out of focus point light sources, they appear oval instead of round. I hope some of this random information makes sense :)
I have a Moondog lens for the 6S+ that I used before I traded up to the 7+. It is an AMAZING little piece of kit and produces a very warm and very cinematic image quality. FilmicPro has full support for Moondog so when you are using it, the app automatically desqueezes the footage for you. If you still have a 6S+ and are interested, I still have the lens and was going to list it on eBay at some point. I would LOVE to see what you could do with it! Let me know and thanks again for all of the terrific info!
No filter, there are no filters for video with the Filmic Pro app, it's shot clean (just exposed well with correct white balance) and then color corrected and graded using DaVinci Resolve.
I presently shoot with 2 iPod 5 Touch and an iPad Mini 2, using Filmic Pro and iOgrapher cases and lenses. Recently added the App Mavis 2.2 to the shooting arsenal as it has a Vectorscope, Waveform Monitor, Focus Peaking and now Zebra Stripes, all visible while I shoot, or, they can be turned off. I do color correction and grading with Color Finale in FCPX. People used to laugh when I said I used an iPod to film, until I showed them what I had done. I recently (Sept 30th) shot an interview for a Russian TV Show using them. Seems it doesn't matter what you use to get your footage and audio, so long as the results are good. :)
Hi Tom, I agree. I haven't tried Mavis yet but I've heard a lot about it. I am enjoying the freedom that shooting with a phone allows, it's non intrusive and doesn't draw any attention to itself. I think it takes some practise to learn the limits, and be able to shoot within them. The two biggest limits I keep in mind are dynamic range and overall light levels. I get best results either under controlled light (well lit interiors) or outside early morning and late afternoon (golden hour). I avoid midday sun like the plague, there's just far too much contrast for good results.
awesome video as always richard, also tomorrow i m gonna visit amsterdam too and i'll make sure to take my se with me. in the past days i've been starting to use davinci more and more. so i'm really looking forward to the grading tutorial which hopefully comes soon😀 also i'd like to ask if theres a huge difference in terms of grading between 4k 100mbps and 1080p 50mps
Hi, fantastic, I'd love to see the footage you shoot in Amsterdam. I had intended to have the first tutorial up yesterday, but it needs a little more tweaking. I haven't noticed a substantial difference between the 4K 100Mbps and 1080p 50Mbps but to be honest I haven't dug deep into comparing them. This would be a good idea though to take a closer look at it.
Richard Lackey hi, the video is now live and titled "niederlande". unfortunately it ended up with almost no shots from amsterdam but instead from denhaag (half an hour away from amsterdam and near the sea). i'm greatly looking forward on you watching my video and would really appreciate it if you could give me some feedback in terms of grading since i think it's still far from perfect.anyways i ended up using some luts and tweaking the outcome a little bit in davinci. i'm looking forward to your tutorial and to hopefully improving my grading skills regards, anton from cinemotion
Hi Jonhy, no stabilizer, apart from the boat itself, the canal boat I was shooting from was floating really smoothly so no stabilization was necessary.
+cerasss 120fps in 1080p should be possible. In FiLMiC Pro settings (tap the gear ⚙️ icon) first change the resolution to HD 1080p, then in frame rate you can select 120fps for capture FPS and also whichever playback FPS you want for the video.
Hi Isaiah, not in this video as the canal boat was so smooth and I had a good position to shoot steady from the boat. Some shots in my previous video were stabilized in Resolve though. ruclips.net/video/UYVrsXI0kYI/видео.html
Hi Juan, on iOS devices, FiLMiC Pro records h.264 (or HEVC if enabled) encoded files in a .mov wrapper. So you'll need to deal with the .mov files on your PC. Am I correct in understanding that Windows is not playing them? Which editing software do you use?
Richard Lackey i use adobe premiere pro, after the edition work the output is a mp4 file but i feel like if i lose quality or maybe i didnt chose the right profile to export my media after the work edition?? i use always this profiles: youtube 1080 hd and youtube 4k, about your question in my case windows is able to play those .movi files (windows 10 64 bits)
I checked my settings in Resolve that I'm using for RUclips. I'm on Mac, so creating .mov files, but you can create .mp4 instead 1080p (1920x1080), h.264, 10Mbps 2160p (3840 x 2160), h.264, 40Mbps You can check the recommended settings here: support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en
wow, beautiful place. The color of the shots is fantastic!
Thanks! I love Amsterdam.

+Jérémy Bessard Thanks so much for the kind comments. Can I see your video somewhere?
love how you captured and colorgraded the scenery.
Incredible work as always!
Thanks so much!
This is absolutely incredible
Looks great! Just got a 7Plus with 256 gigs. About to shoot a feature film with it. Very excited to use Filmic pro
Wow! Sounds like a fantastic project! Will you be sharing info and updates somewhere? I'd love to follow your progress.
+Richard Lackey yeah man actually on RUclips of course but my handle on social media is ObiWanNatoli. Just subscribed to your page. Looking forward to diving into more of your work
love your work!
+Dariusz Goldmann Thank you for the kind comment!
nice work
i just got my se 5 days ago and wondered if you could make a grading tutorial any time soon
Richard Lackey thx so much for the fast reply and amazing footage
keep it up
Thanks! Here's another one I shot a couple months back, with a multi-pass grading breakdown at the end. ruclips.net/video/UYVrsXI0kYI/видео.html
Looking forward to these greatly.
lovely mate! Look forward to your tutorials.
Thanks so much! I'll start sharing tutorials in October, working on them now.
Beautiful!
Could you please share the techniques/gear you use to make such beautifully still shots?
I want to know it all! :p
Sure, in some future videos :)
Amazing
Thanks Brad!
nice shots
Thanks!
The biggest reasons that lead to this great video are bitrate and colour grading
i love the dark low light vibe this video has really loving it !!
how did u get it like that what were your settings here?
Very very nice work Richard! What Luts are you grading with? Cheers
Hi Tobias, no LUTs on any of these vids, just primary balance and shot matching, and then some manual adjustments and curves.
RESPECT 🎩👌🏻
Thank you! Amsterdam is beautiful no matter how it’s shot :)
Сказка . Зазеркалье . Фантастические цветовые стили .
Thank you! Amsterdam is such a beautiful place.
Wonderful work! Beautiful. Was in Amsterdam twice over the summer and this brings it all back. Thanks for posting. Will find you on twitter now :).
Thanks! Glad to connect with you. I'll follow back.

awesome have you used any stabilizer?
Hi Jonhy, no stabilizer, apart from the boat itself, the canal boat I was shooting from was floating really smoothly so no stabilization was necessary.
Richard Lackey thanks for the reply..... Do you know any cheap compact one compatible with smartphone?
I've heard good things about the DJI Osmo Mobile, but haven't tried it yet.
Richard Lackey me too but is too expensive
Zhiyun Smooth Q - under $150 and as good as the Osmo for most applications
AMAZING
Thanks! More to come, and tutorials so you can up your mobile video game too.
Which lens u used??
Hi, no extra lens, just the iPhone SE normal lens.
Filmic Pro looks to be a good program but I also appreciate your video skills.
Subscribed to your channel.
Cheers, Pete
Thanks so much Pete!
Which font did you use for this video ?
It's called Museo Sans.
Thank you
How u increase the resolution into 1920x1080 120 fps??
+cerasss Which phone are you using? It depends on the capabilities of your phone, and what is made available to 3rd party apps in the API.
Richard Lackey im using 6s and how u increased the frame rate?
+cerasss 120fps in 1080p should be possible. In FiLMiC Pro settings (tap the gear ⚙️ icon) first change the resolution to HD 1080p, then in frame rate you can select 120fps for capture FPS and also whichever playback FPS you want for the video.
Did you do some filtering in some software like Final Cut or something like that?
Hi Jeyesh, color graded in DaVinci Resolve.
Was Resolve used to steady shots?
Hi Isaiah, not in this video as the canal boat was so smooth and I had a good position to shoot steady from the boat.
Some shots in my previous video were stabilized in Resolve though. ruclips.net/video/UYVrsXI0kYI/видео.html
Oh wow. Very cool.
hi
can you tell me how to export from filmic pro to pc? because if i shoot in 4k and try to export its a file .mov instead mp4
thanks

I’m using DaVinci Resolve, not Premiere, but I will check the output settings that are working well for me and let you know tomorrow.
thanks
I checked my settings in Resolve that I'm using for RUclips. I'm on Mac, so creating .mov files, but you can create .mp4 instead
1080p (1920x1080), h.264, 10Mbps
2160p (3840 x 2160), h.264, 40Mbps
You can check the recommended settings here: support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en
This music sounds like it comes from minecraft😂 great video tho
Thanks Joe, believe it or not I've never played minecraft :) Cheers for the comment.
Can you sell me this color grading as a Lut?
Unfortunately not, this was graded and shot matched manually for the specific source clips. It would not work to just create a lut from this grade.
