Beautiful color grading, Richard! Love your channel and resources for FiLMic as well. I'm upgrading my version of the app to include LOG right now. Can't wait to use it.
Hi Anthony, thanks so much, really appreciate those kind words. Hope you enjoy shooting the flat and log gamma profiles. Check out the actual FiLMiC Pro user manual, there’s some great tips at the end of the manual, well worth reading.
Hi Nicos, The first color correction tutorial will take you through the method and process of correcting and balancing a shot, and introduce you to the tools used and order of operations to achieve a well balanced, creative look. It's almost ready to upload and publish.
Thanks, no special lens. I'd love to test out the Moondog anamorphic at some point. As far as I know nobody has yet created LUTs for the Filmic flat and log profiles, it's in beta still so too early, but I have been told that Sony S-log LUTs work quite well. I haven't tried this to verify though.
Hi Mahmood, in the current beta release that I have been testing there are two flat profiles... one is called "flat" the other is called "log". The log gamma profile has a stronger curve than the flat profile, and in my tests so far the "flat" profile has given the best results. I am not sure if this will change with the public release. They are still making changes every week or so at the moment. If you know what you are doing when it comes to color grading, then yes, there is an advantage to shooting in the flat profile, but for anyone not familiar with professional color work, it could be a steep learning curve.
Richard Lackey Thanks for the reply I'm not familiar with log but I want to improve my videos .I have downloaded the free version of DaVinci Resolve but I don't where to start.
Every camera manufacturer has made it's own different non-linear gamma encoding profiles, Arri have Log C, Sony have S Log, Canon have C Log. DJI now have D Log. Often there are also variations of each that are numbered. It's all effectively the same thing. Encoding a non-linear (log) gamma curve expands the overall dynamic range captured by assigning luma levels non-linearly. FiLMiC Pro is the first smartphone video app to offer real non-linear gamma encoding. FiLMiC Pro offer "flat" and "log" profiles, and they also have a dynamic gamma mode but I haven't really played with it. I've found the "flat" gamma gives the best performance when it comes to color grading.
hey richard, so i was pretty mich waiting for weeks to shoot log ob my iphone se and now it isn't even available. on twitter the filmic team told me and many other people who asked the same question that apparently the a9 insinde the se 6s and 6s plus isn't able to process log footage at 4k 30 fps and 1080p 60 fps. this seems logical to me but strangely your footage looks just fine (no frame drops,...) what do you think about the decision in general i remember them saying that there is still a chance for these devices to get log mode because of swift 3. in my opinion they could have at least made log mode available at 1080p 30fps which is definitely not optimal but i think i'd still buy it
Hi again dear Richard, i want to ask you if you don’t mind, why is my videos are choppy and skippy, when i shot them with Filmic Pro on iphone 7, 4k filmic Extreme, 16:9, 24fps, flat... they are not that smooth ! Thank you very much in advance :)
There are two things that come to mind and together they can cause this. First is possibly if your shots have a lot of camera movement in them, or fast moving objects, and second is if you are shooting in bright conditions without ND filters, your shutter speed is very high, this can cause movement to appear choppy.
Yep, I live in Dubai so this city ends up being my muse and subject matter for most of my random wanderings hauling one or more cameras around with me.
Thanks Michael, it always involves some work, especially in primaries shot by shot and matching. After that you can develop a look and apply it to all the matched shots, then it's a case of looking at secondaries... power windows and local adjustments. I suppose the way I do it is more on the intensive side but it's the way it's done properly.
It worked, but wasn't completely stable. I found out a couple of days ago that the custom gamma curves will be coming for A9 devices (6s, 6S plus, SE) in the upcoming ver 6.1. I hope it's true.
Hi, no extra lenses on any of my videos to date. I have the moondoglabs anamorphic lens now, which is excellent, and have shot new videos with it but I haven’t finished editing them yet.
how do you shoot in such bright conditions with slower shutter speeds? utilizing 1/48 shutter speeds complete blows out any outdoor shooting i want to do. any help would be awesome!
Well, when you don't have a solution to use ND filters, the only option is to increase the shutter speed to have correct exposure. It's not the end of the world and won't necessarily make your footage look any less cinematic, especially if it's a mostly static shot or has slow movement in it. There's so much else that goes into creating that look, most of it is framing and composition, and color in post. Shutter speed is only a small part.
Hi Matt, Unfortunately when FiLMiC released the final public release the log, flat and custom gamma capabilities were disabled for all iPhones other than 7 and 7 Plus. The extra processing power of the A10 platform is needed, and the A9 (6S, 6S Plus, SE) was dropping frames. So while it was working in the beta version, it's now only available on the 7 and 7 Plus.
I'm so sorry about this, I was testing the beta version of FiLMiC Pro v6 on the iPhone SE since the first beta release and it was working more or less fine, log gamma was enabled in the beta. They made the decision to limit the log functionality to the iPhone 7 just before public release. I had no idea this was going to be the case. The iPhone SE is still a fantastic platform for mobile video, I am sorry for the lack of log though. I'm also stuck without it for now.
hi richard, in about a week i'm going on a skiing vacation and i was wondering if the update will be released till then unfortunately i don't have access to the beta thx in advance, anton
Hey man, really love the vid.. Just bought the app (iPhone SE too) and wanted to try the log gamma profile, but where can I find it? In the description of the app it said that this feature was iPhone7(+) only. Really curious! Thanks in advance!
Hi Julian, when v6 was still in beta the custom gamma profiles worked (more or less) on the 6s, 6s+ and SE as well, and that's how I was testing it with the SE, but with the final v6 release it's now iPhone 7 and 7+ only because the earlier devices didn't really have enough processing power.
I'm not sure when the release is scheduled, but the v6 beta is being updated regularly and is getting more stable every week. There are still some bugs the Filmic team need to iron out, and it crashes often, but they will get there.
They made an announcement post on their facebook page, but you can scroll back on their page and check for the details and how to contact them about it.
Woow, this looks wonderful. These shots could have easily been from a movie. So without the Filmic app this would have been impossible I imagine? Love how cinematic it is. I think the default camera app on the SE could never achieve this, am I right? Going to check out your tutorial ASAP.
Hi Emre, I haven't actually shot much with the default camera app. My background is with professional cinema cameras so I immediately wanted all the manual control I could get with the phone, so I went straight to Filmic Pro. A lot of making shots look cinematic comes down to all kinds of choices other than the camera. What you choose to shoot, and how it is lit is really important as well as framing and composition, and interesting angles... this is the core of what cinematography is... light and shadow, movement and composition. In that sense the camera is secondary. Also color plays an important part, and this is where color grading becomes very important. Color is so important in movies, and a lot of time and work go into making the shots look a certain way. That's all color grading which happens in post production.
Besides the ability to shoot with focus and exposure separately, do you recommend FiLMiC Pro for me if I don't have experienced in Flat video but would like to learn about it and color correcting too? Do those flat profile and other cool features in FiLMiC Pro are just fake filter effect? Will the standard camera app do the same job just fine?
Hi, the flat gamma profile actually changes how the levels are encoded in the file. There would be no point in applying a filter to flatten the image after it was already encoded, only to color correct it back afterwards. There will be an article up on cinema5D soon explaining how this works and the advantages, it should be live this week. I'll put a link to it here. Getting the most out of shooting with a flat, log, or any non-linear gamma encoding is somewhat technical. It requires a lot more care and thought given to how you expose while shooting, and it also requires a knowledge of professional color correction. It's worth experimenting with it, and learning to color correct and grade, but if you're not familiar with it yet, and have something important to shoot, it may be easier to shoot normally on any important projects while you are learning.
I don't really use, like or believe in a LUT as a quick shortcut or replacement for a proper manual color correction. They do have their uses technically in translating from one color space to another, for monitoring and previewing, and creatively in some cases to preview a look on set or for transcoding proxies for an editor, or creating dailies for review. However, that's just my preference. I am sure it won't be long before there are a ton of LUTs for Filmic Pro's flat and log gamma profiles available.
Thanks, yeah original shots recorded at 100mbps. It's just my preference to work in 1080p timeline, I use a laptop for editing and color grading, so it's limited in GPU power. On my Macbook Pro, DaVinci Resolve performs better at 1080p than in a UHD timeline, and I will always output 1080p in the end anyway, so editing and grading in UHD is just a waste of resources for me. Nothing wrong with working at full res if you're going to render UHD output.
oh wow, thanks for the tips, did you use any stabilizer or just handheld? i am thinking about making a short film using just an iphone, and any tips would be really really appreciated.
All handheld :) I have a GorillaGrip tripod thing, but actually don't use it that much. I think it has more to do with finding interesting framing a composition of your shots more than anything too technical.
Hi, thanks for the question. No lut as far as look goes, just manual correction, balancing and shot matching and then I create a basic look on top of that which is different every time. I like to work with whatever colors are in the shots naturally. The only lut I use often is a rec709 Kodak film print emulation on a timeline node, but even that I don't apply more than 50% output key.
Richard Lackey fair enough. Other then using this app, are there any other ways to record in a flat profile with the iPhone? Also how's the performance of this app? Does it get sluggish?
That’s a good question. To be honest FiLMiC is the only one I’ve heard of up to this point offering custom non-linear gamma encoding. I’d have to check Mavis too if it’s something they’ve implemented yet. To be honest it does get sluggish and the phone heats up a lot. I work around it by keeping individual shots at 15-20 secs or less, and sometimes I’ll close the app in between shooting to let it cool off.
I'm actually not seeing it on the current public release of FiLMiC Pro v5, but it is on the beta release of v6 and works well, so it seems that it's a new option enabled on FiLMiC Pro v6.
Dear Richard, i had already liked and subscribed your channel, thanks for the great video, i have two questions hope you can answer me: 1- What aspect ratio did you use in this video? 2-for cinematic look, shooting video in 24fps and exporting it in 24fps or exporting in 30fps? I use iPhone 7 with filmic pro, flat profile.... thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for the comment! I shot in 16:9 aspect ratio and then cropped to 2.39:1 in the edit. It's all shot, edited and exported at 24fps only. Let me know if you've got any more questions! I'll help if I can.
Hi Bruno, I love the SE because it has the same camera and processor specs as the 6s at a more budget friendly price. You can get these kind of imaging results with 6s, 6s plus, SE, and of course 7 as well.
Iphone 7 has the same sensor just a different lens system. they even mention it during the presentation. Iphone 7 just has a better hardware software integration including the way the image is captured and the way software processes it.
Richard Lackey yes, sir! I’ll certainly give their manual a read soon. Keep up the great work!
Please make a tutorial on how to make the color correction in the Dubai video!!!
Hi Nicos, The first color correction tutorial will take you through the method and process of correcting and balancing a shot, and introduce you to the tools used and order of operations to achieve a well balanced, creative look. It's almost ready to upload and publish.
Richard Lackey Ok thanks you. Can't wait!
I am a student from the multimedia background. This video is awesome. Can you do the same kind of video with some tele-lens attached? Thanks.
Nice work, and great to see this runs just as well on an iPhone SE.
Thanks, yeah, works great on the SE, testing it on the iPad Pro too, also working great so far.
Can you help us to do color correction like this? If we shoot Log Gamma. Shoot video please
Very nice indeed. Did you use an anamorphic lens (Moondog perhaps) too? And is there a profile to get the same look in DV 12.5?
Thanks, no special lens. I'd love to test out the Moondog anamorphic at some point. As far as I know nobody has yet created LUTs for the Filmic flat and log profiles, it's in beta still so too early, but I have been told that Sony S-log LUTs work quite well. I haven't tried this to verify though.
what about bitrate. Shoot at 100 but render ?
It's amazing what that tiny sensor can do!
It is when you know and stick within it's limits :) It's good fun too.
Great video!! How do you do the movement pf the grading from the left to the right?
Do you recommend shooting travel video all FiLMiC log ?
Hi Mahmood, in the current beta release that I have been testing there are two flat profiles... one is called "flat" the other is called "log". The log gamma profile has a stronger curve than the flat profile, and in my tests so far the "flat" profile has given the best results. I am not sure if this will change with the public release. Richard Lackey Thanks for the reply
I'm not familiar with log but I want to improve my videos .I have downloaded the free version of DaVinci Resolve but I don't where to start.
Yep, absolutely, there are a lot of resources online.
How do you set a flat profile in Filmic?
Hi, at the moment it's only in the v6 beta, so it isn't public yet. I am not sure when the new version will be released.
Is this the same as shooting in d log but on an iphone?
Every camera manufacturer has made it's own different non-linear gamma encoding profiles, Arri have Log C, Sony have S Log, Canon have C Log. DJI now have D Log. Often there are also variations of each that are numbered. It's all effectively the same thing.

this is dubai right?
Yep, I live in Dubai so this city ends up being my muse and subject matter for most of my random wanderings hauling one or more cameras around with me.
Wow! Nice. Well done.
Was the grading easy...or intensive?
Thanks Michael, it always involves some work, especially in primaries shot by shot and matching. After that you can develop a look and apply it to all the matched shots, then it's a case of looking at secondaries... power windows and local adjustments. I suppose the way I do it is more on the intensive side but it's the way it's done properly.
Done properly indeed!
If you could do this on the SE with the beta why didn't the enable the feature for the SE in the actual release?
It worked, but wasn't completely stable. I found out a couple of days ago that the custom gamma curves will be coming for A9 devices (6s, 6S plus, SE) in the upcoming ver 6.1. I hope it's true.
That would be great! Any idea on when that might be?
Beta testing on SE again, seems to be working well, better than it was before the v6 release.
Richard Lackey is there a way to sign up to use the beta?
Not right now unfortunately, they've got an existing pool of people giving feedback.
great shots!
Thanks!
any chance of having this feature on the Android app also?
Hi Andre, that would be a good question for the Filmic Pro team :)
Hi again, want to ask you, did you used any extra lens on iPhone? Or just the iPhone camera. Thank you :)
Hi, no extra lenses on any of my videos to date.
I have the moondoglabs anamorphic lens now, which is excellent, and have shot new videos with it but I haven’t finished editing them yet.
Richard Lackey thx a lot my dear, waiting for your new videos 🙂

Hey, I cant find this option on the SE? Can you tell me where is it in the menu items?
Hi Matt, Unfortunately when FiLMiC released the final public release the log, flat and custom gamma capabilities were disabled for all iPhones other than 7 and 7 Plus. The extra processing power of the A10 platform is needed, and the A9 (6S, 6S Plus, SE) was dropping frames. So while it was working in the beta version, it's now only available on the 7 and 7 Plus.
Thank, I actually just saw that in the comments!
Hi Matt, good news! the custom gamma profiles are now available officially as an add on pack within the app on 6S/6S Plus and SE.
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up!
I bought iPhone se because of you, lol. Unfortunately filmic pro 6 doesn't have log mode for se it's only available for iPhone 7. 😔
I'm so sorry about this, I was testing the beta version of FiLMiC Pro v6 on the iPhone SE since the first beta release and it was working more or less fine, log gamma was enabled in the beta. So the flat profile is available for iPhone se?
Hi Nick, it is now, but with the extra paid in-app Cinematographer Kit.
hi richard,
in about a week i'm going on a skiing vacation and i was wondering if the update will be released till then unfortunately i don't have access to the beta
thx in advance,
anton
Hi, I would like to know that too, unfortunately I have no idea when the v6 release is planned.
Richard Lackey ok has there been a new update for the beta this week?
Hey man, really love the vid.. Just bought the app (iPhone SE too) and wanted to try the log gamma profile, but where can I find it? In the description of the app it said that this feature was iPhone7(+) only. Really curious! Thanks in advance!

When?? :D
very cool,

Richard Lackey thanks for the quick reply, hopefully they'll release it soon
Richard Lackey one more question is there a special way to sign up for the beta or did the filmic team give the chance to test only to a few people
They made an announcement post on their facebook page, but you can scroll back on their page and check for the details and how to contact them about it.
cinemotion the beta is closed unfortunately but I can tell you it's a great update!!
I'm ardently waiting to see how you made this.
I've got one tutorial coming up, almost done. I had to get this new FiLMiC video out first for an article.
Thank you. I'm waiting😀
Rup Kumar BK the beta is great :)
Woow, this looks wonderful. These shots could have easily been from a movie. So without the Filmic app this would have been impossible I imagine? Love how cinematic it is. I think the default camera app on the SE could never achieve this, am I right? Going to check out your tutorial ASAP.

Thx for the info :)
Hi which app u used to edit and grade color , bro????
Hi Jin, I use DaVinci Resolve for all my editing and color :)
dude, why downscale it to 1080p on timeline not only on rendering? but, really, it's beautiful even on 480p. It's 100mbps right?
more reason to buy iphone se :|
Thanks, yeah original shots recorded at 100mbps. It's just my preference to work in 1080p timeline, I use a laptop for editing and color grading, so it's limited in GPU power. Hi, thanks for the question. No lut as far as look goes, just manual correction, balancing and shot matching and then I create a basic look on top of that which is different every time.
Is this handheld, or did you use some kind of stabiliser? - Nuri
Hi Nuri, it's handheld but the iPhone SE's image stabilisation was turned on.
Thank you! It looks amazing.
Yes, seems to work very well at all resolutions.
How do you turn it on? / Where can you find the option?
I didn't even know if it had image stabilization. I have the same phone...
I'm actually not seeing it on the current public release of FiLMiC Pro v5, but it is on the beta release of v6 and works well, so it seems that it's a new option enabled on FiLMiC Pro v6.
Filmic pro! Is an amazing app! I also started using it in log mode! I was in Paris and I made a video that you can find in my channel!
Dear Richard, i had already liked and subscribed your channel, thanks for the great video, i have two questions hope you can answer me:
1- What aspect ratio did you use in this video?
2-for cinematic look, shooting video in 24fps and exporting it in 24fps or exporting in 30fps?
I use iPhone 7 with filmic pro, flat profile.... thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for the comment! I shot in 16:9 aspect ratio and then cropped to 2.39:1 in the edit. It's all shot, edited and exported at 24fps only. Let me know if you've got any more questions! I'll help if I can.
Richard Lackey thank you very much my dear, please keep posting those great Videos, we enjoying them and learning from them.
The video is awesome.
Thanks so much Andy.
That's crazy. iPhone SE, not even iPhone 7
