Who here is trying to get into plumbing?
Me
I just signed up for the plumbing program at our county college. I start September 10th. Question? Should I start applying to companies now, or when I’m closer towards completion in May of next year?
I don’t know who to talk to about it?
Hey roger, I’m trying to become a plumber after i finish my military service in about 10 months, what is the fastest way to get into an apprenticeship since i have a kid on the way and would need to start earning an income right away?
I've applied for two open shop apprentice jobs already but I've had no return call for a interview. What can I do?? (Tri cities, Wa) the union only takes people one time a year :/
The hardest part is finding someone to take you on as an apprentice
@Jumper F22 keep working on finding that starting place!
I read a ton of books and taught myself everything I know. 23 years old
@@kingfolk500 did you find an apprenticeship?
@@elijahhmarshall no just youtube. I swear.
@@kingfolk500 2000 lbs worth of books? Damn that's a lot of reading!
I’m a 33 year old second generation plumber my dad took no safety precautions and never tried to save his knees or anything now he’s falling apart. I wear knee pads to every job and I bought a hydraulic lift at harbor freight I use to lift my water heaters. Makes a huge difference man
@Plumbing Explained I tell people all the time to take care of their bodies! That’s very important advice!
I am 72 this year , I started plumbing in 1967 an I just went back to work in an open shop. I am starting a plumber training school for helpers in the shop. I hope to teach them the correct way to do service calls and be safe as well. I have had both knees replaced, 4 back surgeries , carpel tunnel surgery twice on each hand, 4 hip replacements, and other things that I won’t mention. I will be training in the proper way to move heavy things and working smart and safe. I appreciate your videos and your advice, thank you for your message.
Thank you for your service.
Former sprinkler fitter apprentice here. Best advice: pay attention to the old timers! They know how to do this stuff the easiest and most efficient way. Don't be a hero, take care of your body (yoga, cardio, stretching, etc.) and you will go far in the pipe trades!!
How hard is it mentally,is it technically challenging
Knee pads, knee pads .to all young new plumbers. Invest in a good set of knee pads.
Marty Woodrow omg such good advice
@Marty Woodrow knee pads are amazing. Great information.
Marty Woodrow every time I use them apparently I’m on my knees do to do a different “job”
@@samuelpurvis8786 this is fun work though...
Lol bro it's funny how people are made fun of for wearing safety equipment
I use a kneeling pad when I need to. lots of guys in the trade and other trades used to laugh at me because I used to take it everywhere. The best part was at the end of the day I was never complaining about how my knees felt like they were.
I got a bright blue one I put right under my arm to take to the site I'm at. I'll never care how I look. Longevity Is the game for me
You single handily have convinced me to start this trade. I’m calling all of the most popular companies and see if they need help!
Good luck in your new career!
Grab the basic tools, show up to work on time willing to learn and you'll go as far as you want
How did it go
Did you find an apprenticeship fam?
How’s it going?
Awesome video and channel Roger. You have some great humor and production value.
I start my plumbing apprenticeship this month! Only female to ever work for the company in the field. Very excited about it!
Hey what city are you doing your apprenticeship??
Love the message of being specific about what your desired end result before you begin to learn the trade. Also the bloopers are great.
@ALLwaysGood glad that you like them. You’ve got to know where you are going in order to get where you want to be.
Hi good night. Well said. Plumbing is not a easy job, but I love it. Like you said use the right tools. Work hard but work smart.
Thanks so much Roger!!!
I started in 1972 so for 48 yrs my son is a plumber also and I told him take care of your body. I have had 3 hip replacements on one hip and my knee scoped, but I would not change a thing. I loved every moment.
@Jesse Williams this is a great profession. Even with the pain involved!
I love your stuff brother keep it up. I've been recommending your videos to our apprentices for extra knowledge.
9yr journeyman plumber

Will be getting my masters soon.
Plumber here in western North Carolina and its crazy how similar our companies operate, idk why i thought it would be different in texas but we do alot of the things you do, except we do alot of wet venting but i haven't seen alot of your sewer piping, but our water piping and service is very similar, even the plumbing lingo is similar
Mr Wakefield, I see me working on already made homes, Residential Plumbing, on maintenance service, repair and upgrading plumbing, doing masonry demolition work to make it through to the piping in the masonry. Here in Puerto Rico, most homes are made of masonry block n concrete houses, this is because of hurricanes zone in the Caribbean, wood houses doesn't survive storms and hurricanes, so masonry block n reinforced concrete is the rule in construction here. Also considered Masonry work combined with plumbing, as for masonry repair and home remodeling, along with plumbing work. Most tradesman contractors here have demolition equipment, chipping hammers and the like. Since I intend to live and work close to home, Residential plumbing is the option to go! Greetings!
I'd recommend that apprentice plumbers work with Sewers & Drains in the beginning. Performing service calls requiring drain cleaning and leak fixing. This gets the candidate to understand the great sense of responsibility on his shoulders BEFORE working on Supply pipes. I was told by my instructor years ago,
''The supply pipe system continues to leak until the City runs out of water''.
Thus there exists a greater sense of responsibility on the shoulders of the Supply system plumber. He learns to fix what he can within a limited amount of time that doesn't greatly inconvenience the residents in the building. The young plumber must learn to both THINK and BE OBSERVANT.
These were the most crucial statements that I followed in the beginning.
I'm a first timer I'm 64 years old. I used to watch my father fix things around the house but I never had thorough training. I want to learn so I can get a part time to full time job as a plumber. I've never learned a skill or a trade and I want to now before I get any older
You can do it, just start as a helper than a apprentice, I am 72 and always wanted to be a plumber, I was in Auto Body and a merchineist in General Electric. As long as your mechanicly inclined.
I'm currently in the army and planning on getting out. I've been looking into different trades and you make me wanna get into plumbing lol...Great videos man!!!
Awesome! I have a couple of videos on how to get out of the military and into the trades. Hopefully they help you out.
You said it all man. Don't be a brute! you don't have to lift everything by yourself, you don't have to power your way through everything. Been Plumbing since 2003, but now a mechanical estimator for the last 8 years. both elbows have repetitive strain injuries from being a brute, lifting everything myself and trying to power through everything! Dr's told me i shouldn't be working with my arms above my head or repetitive pushing and pulling motions (or as we plumbers like to call it, PLUMBING). lifelong damage at 37 years old. other commentators already said Knee pads but in case you didn't see it, WEAR YOUR DAMN KNEE PADS!
matt payne I hope everyone that sees this learns to take care of their body early! Do you enjoy estimating?
Nice video!
Yoga/pilates and exercise, it might suck or not be cool, but it will keep your body strong for longer. Especially the yoga and pilates.
I agree with Roger 100 percent on the Union training program, especially for Commercial and Industrial but in my experience the better plumbers have worked both Non-Union and Union. Just my experience.
The thought process is easy, but depending on who you work for and what you make and what they allow you to do it can be very difficult to move up, it could also be very easy to move up just depends on how your company works and how they train you, and also how well you take the training
Streaching is key to tendon longevity, prior to service, and-or new work. Especially within winter season, cold extremitys injury's happen when least expect. Most dont do this, same most that within 30"s-40"s at best, can no longer handle this type work.
I did about a year of plumbing for a buddy's company. Learned alot but it wasn't sustainable. I ended up leaving for something more consistent. Well now I'm looking at going back I miss the type of work. Commercial and residential. Only thing I don't miss it's black pipe but that wasn't even that bad. Just need a career so if I go back. I'm starting school right away and won't stop till I'm done.
Great video!
@Hever Morales what do you like most about them?
@@RogerWakefield they are just as you said on your video, Camera is a good tool that help us to do a diagnostic or a simple inspection on a drain pipe. What I like is when I scope a drain line with a camera I can make some good money in such a short period time.
I like the Forbest camera because it is a compact camera, easy to carry any where, it has good crystal image for a reasonable price. It paid off itself after few calls compare to Ridgid is probably better one get more footage, bigger monitor screen.
One thing that I have learned about this expensive devices is that one must be careful on how to use them, you use them with care don't force them, they are not sewer machines, if one can not run the camera just stop and pull it out .
Hever Morales they are delicate pieces of equipment. Always treat them gently and they will last a long time! What locator do you use?
@@RogerWakefield I use General GEN-Eye hot Spot , very easy to use.
i found that jumping on and off the back of the truck has more wear and tear on your knees than almost any other task including kneeling.try to gingerly get down and never carry heavy objects when jumping off especially box trucks. your knees and anckles will thank you when you are older
I would use knee pads and also get help lifting. I am now 40 years old wear knee pads every day
Do knee pads help prevent 100 percent of the pain or do you do hurt a little bit?
@@agerestricted1947 it depends on the person I guess because a few guys in his age range told me they didnt have any pain and a few said they were just a little stiff but nothing painful.
@@agerestricted1947 a little if your in real pain and a lot of it’s just aches and pains. You’ll still feel whatever discomfort was there a little though. But it helps significantly.

To become a plumber is simple!
You need to first to go a plumbers training school.
But first you need 2 years of experience to join the school.
Once you have completed the school, you will need 2 years of experience in the field before you can become an apprentice.
And of course, 2 years of experience to finally become a plumber.
it's that easy.
FYI, you need to get your math and science way up. Especially math. Where I’m at you have to be able to do geometry, trigonometry and other applied science questions just to even be considered to get in the 98 union In Michigan. Also a reading level of 6 which isn’t very tough lol but still, some people struggle with grammar.
Mr Roger Wakefield, you, like Kirk Giordano plastering, are both, Living National Treasures, both share your life experience in the Trades, both have 40+ years in it, love the trade, share it with pride and encourage us who look up to start up new career at mid age to really move into studying and working on the trades.
Is there a lot of digging involved with new construction like there is with service?
My boss asked me when I first started is "are you afraid of a shovel?" I said no. 5 days later I was on a 24 hour shift digging for a pipe burst lol
The hardest thing about plumbing isn't the plumbing. It's everything else that revolves around it.
Good morning iam am an older women I have changed a few faucets and have decided I would like to do this as a business I want to focus on fixture repair or replacement only. How can I go about getting educated on this section and is it feasible to only do this and iam an older women will that hold me back
Thanks looking for advice
The answer is residential service calls. 5x $187 service jobs is a good days work. Bigger jobs take longer and longer to get paid. You usually pay for all the material up front
I’ve been doing commercial service plumbing for 9 years now and irregardless of the job these days my biggest downfall was being the okay and yes guy. Now my problem is finding a week where I’m at home more than work.
I would love to have a conversation with you about becoming a plumber. I've done a fair amount of research on other jobs and plumbing looks the most interesting, appealing to me. Is there anyway to have a dialogue, possibly over email or such? I just have a few specific questions.
Lucas Ginther check this out first and see what type plumber you want to be. Then we can talk. ruclips.net/video/ACkqrX09GlE/видео.html
i new commer in Canada i want to be plumber .which one is better ,residential or commercial ( construction) plumber ?
I would like to do so but I am found in Africa in Africa we don't have things like that here I would like to learn and bring it back home to teach my computer also 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Plumbing will surely wear down your body even if you're careful but so would sitting at a desk 8+ hours a day I'd imagine. I'm only 7 years into plumbing but I'm still in one piece. :)
@ExemptAK just keep taking care of yourself. That’s what it’s all about. What type plumbing do you do?
@@RogerWakefield I mostly do residential service now but I spent a few years on residential new construction.
As a desk jockey working for decent company...i have an adjustable desk that allows me to sit or stand; however, I am not immune to being outsourced. Being in this trade would be nice.
Somehow I've never seen the health issues from desk work compared to wear from physical work. And I think it should. Many hands on trades have a scary reputation for their health effects, but it's never mentioned that desk workers who don't take care of themselves can also be in terrible health by the time they retire because of their work.
I'm currently in the military and getting out in may and let me say it's super hard to get into plumbing. Union at least, I am already working as a part time plumbing apprentice but in San Diego, I'm trying to get into the union in illinois but its hard
isaiah pouncy try to get into residential if union don’t work out.
Me too, forget the unions. Their goal is to keep people out
@isaiah pouncy it isn’t easy to get in. If it was everyone would be in the union. Keep trying. Don’t give up! Thanks for your service. Go to the UA page and check out the VIP program.
@Jumper F22 the union actually wants more people in. That’s how they will grow... Why would they want to keep people out?
I was in the military, Active Duty. We had a program called VIP (Veterans In Piping) Look into that, I and many others have done that. I've had nothing but positive experiences working with my local union (Local 100)
My concern about becoming a plumber is getting snake 🐍 bit when going on crawl spaces. We have copperheads in this area. Otherwise, I don’t mind getting dirty.
Holy crap!!! Count me out
Turning 29 this fall and starting plumbing school the same week. Feeling very nervous but excited! Wondering about the balance between the work day and down time. How hard is it to find the time to spend the money you’re earning?
Got a preemptive info session tomorrow with the trade program faculty! Looking forward to it.
Don't spend the money, save as much as possible. You'll have pto if you work for a legit company
I think it depends on the company. I started at 33 and got a job as a helper prior to my apprenticeship starting. We work monday through friday 7 to 3ish. There's always overtime available on Saturdays if you're so inclined. So far it's been a good work/life balance. I spend late afternoons and evenings with the family and work during regular hours. Haven't looked back yet lol. Good luck! Hope that helps
@@Tone_Of_Dials I came in green with no experience and got 15/hr. We get a 5% raise every 6 months and a yearly Christmas bonus of around 500-1000. When I get my journeyman license it jumps to 35/hr
I went to trade school and earned a plumbing certificate. I love water lines and gas lines but my stomach cant handle shit literally. Is there any jobs out there for me I'm thinking pipefitters?

What do you think of ProPress? I've seen a lot of plumbers using it just curious what you think of it
ProPress it's a great tool for running water pipes it's very easy to use even though its an expensive tool. It's used mostly in commercial plumbing the brand tool is Viega ProPress, which cost few thousand dollars. For small project like a residential remodeling or a repipe I would recommend to get the Viega crimpers or to get the Uponor tool from Ebay or some where.
@Austin Frutiger I love it! I also use the Mega Press very often. How about you?
It is a good system . But comes into its own on larger pipe sizes as small domestic pipes are quite easy & quick to weld.
Things I would've done differently other than what you've mentioned is, don't over think things, and something I learned was sometimes you have to slow down to go faster.
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Good advice.
I’m 18 I just graduated high school and I’m still undecided on what I want to do in life, Plumbing might not be a bad idea🤔 but the thing is, how do I approach it? Who do I call? how do I get in? I’m confused I live in Indiana and I don’t know how to approach this
I’m in trade school now learning plumbing,,go to trade school
kind been thinking the same thing, just turned 18, I think trade would be the best choice
Get some basic tools. Rodger has a video on that. I'm a residential plumber and I recommend getting in with a residential plumbing company. To get the best company to work for find on Yelp a company with a lot of good reviews and apply to them. You can't pay to delete bad reviews on Yelp. Show up on time ready to work. If the plumber ask you to do something do it. If you have questions don't be afraid to ask , and if you're plumber gets mad at you just keep asking. Once you get that red apprentice card you will be official. There is so many approaches to get into Plumbing. But sometimes in Plumbing you just have to jump in. Trade schools are a great option too.

What do you think are the health risks connected with this job?
Do you recommend working for a company who pays base Commission or hourly?
it depends on what kind of plumbing to do you want to get into, some service plumbing companies pay on both hourly wages & commission on bigger jobs.
In construction is better to get pay hourly but in plumbing service is better to get pay by commission or maybe hourly also cz you can take your time when you go to people's houses to get service done. Either way is good, plumbing its a good trade always pay good .
@Matt Cox you can make more in commission if you are a hard worker. What pay structure are you in now?

Not really i am a normall guy i have worked for years with a plumber and there is no way i am dealing with the shit and weights my boss deals it is very fun when you are young not fun from him he is 50. I am studying electrical engineering now
Being a true plumber you need to be able to troubleshoot that house and be able to sling hangers on a 60 story high rise .
Overall plumbing aint hard but its courageous and more dangerous than being an electrician. A point I love to make because its counterintuitive to most.
Just think, a plumber has to know a good degree of sound electrical knowledge like electrical engineering 102 vs an electrician who doesnt have to know a gas regulator from tp relief valve!
