Commas are critical to clarification in comprehension. The classic example: "Count out one thousand two hundred and seventy. " (Count out 1,270- or count out 1,200---and then 70 separately.) The comma before "and" makes a significant difference. Technical writers especially are notorious for failing to use commas when clarifying meaning.
When it comes to commas I tend to overuse them, so I have what I like to call “Shatner syndrome” in my writing because of it. This video was extremely helpful, so hopefully it won’t be so bad now. 😅😂

yup. the sentence will be now compound predicate. encouraged boys to pursue engineering ,and girls the art. if you just type girls the art,it wont make sense since it is a dependent clause.

I'm not expecting an answer as this is 2 years old already, but your first example is confusing me. There's a big difference in 'A,B, and C' and 'A, B and C'. In the first one you're naming 3 groups, in the second B and C belong together, and can't be seperated. Or should you use or in that case?

Actually, the comma before the “and” is the Oxford comma, which is used to separate the items in the list. For example: - A, B and C People can understand the list has two items: 1. A, 2. B and C; or has three items: 1. A, 2. B, 3. C - A, B, and C You indicated that there were exactly three items in the list. For the most part, there are no problems, but in some cases (formal documents such as contracts), to be more precise expression, you should use this Oxford comma to prevent misunderstanding.
