I can't believe I found this 5 years later. His hand moves so quickly and locates the correct position so perfectly that it almost looks like he's stop motion animated when he's playing. Or at least that it's missing frames from the video.
When I was a lad, we had two star trumpet players at our high school. The first chair was an economy size gentleman; he could play the solo from Sleigh Ride like Mr. Anderson intended it. Second chair was this wee slip of a girl, maybe 5'1", and she could keep up with first chair. I'm like, "How DO you do that?!" "Practice." Turns out most people use about half their lung capacity. Brass and wind players? Up to 80%. And they sometimes breathe back in through their instruments to avoid overoxygenation, which is almost as bad for you as too much CO2. It's only looney toons in the manner of Yakko and the Brain: it's SCIENCE!
Just amazing! As a former trumpet player, I salute you, Sir. And to top it all off, he was still able to play after putting on chapstick, which I was never able to do. 😲 This makes me seriously want to pull out my old trumpet and play again. I still have it; I bet I remember more than I think I do . . . 🤔 Also, kudos to the band for the theatrics and humor involved. 👏👏👏
Although I never of my life would try to perform The Flight of the Bumble Bee with any kind of copper instrument... this fun to watch and... also very skillfull. Props to the sarge. Very well done, with panache and wit.
I had the pleasure to see you guys in Panama City beach just a month or so ago, was such an experience, especially when the duet with the trumpet and euphonium was played.
This is also played quite well on the tuba by Chuck Daellenbach of the Canadian Brass. I talked to him one evening after a performance and asked how he could defy physics so easily. He said, "it's a trick".
I studied music for thirty years (it was my college major) before putting everything on hold to become a writer a few years ago. Started my musical travels at age ten on slide trombone, and over the years, gained basic competence on low and high brass and the saxophone family...too much of a drifter to ever become a virtuoso like Staff Sergeant Carmen Russo, my new musical hero. Bravo, sir...BRAVO!!! To attain this level of mastery over various sized brass instruments is a major achievement that requires discipline, hard work, intense focus, and LOTS of practice. I humbly tip my hat to your excellence. Thank you for this masterful...and quite humorous...performance! :-)

We watched this video when I was in 8th grade band. I am so happy I found it again.
This is like a tom and Jerry freakin scene
I thought I was good when I made state band as a trombonist....now I know I suck in comparison!
matt m You certainly don't if you got into state band. Keep up the good work!
If you suck at trombone, I think I know why you didn't do well.
I mean, State Band is pretty good, my man.
0:53 As a fellow trombone player, wow. Just wow.
Me: There is no possible way a trombone can play this.
Trombone:
"HOLD MAH BEER..."
I’m soo happy this video from 8 years ago happened along my screen! This is the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen!
so many bassoonists makes me happy
Hahaha agreed! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it
there are two things that don't seem right:
1) the accuracy of the slides
2) the size of that trombone
1). It's possible,
2). Which trombone ? Tenor, or alto ( or piccolo trombone ) ? I forget the looks from it sometimes
RapTor _ the smallest one he used. My friend also watched this and told me it's so small it has less slide positions to use than a normal trombone :P
Indeed. Piccolo trombones have ~5 1/2 positions.
Well some say size doesn't matter?
I used to play the trombone, or at least I *thought* I did.
As a bone player, I love everything about this!!
I fear no man but that thing...
4:12 that scares me...
Legend has it he’s still playing smaller and smaller trombones
My first instrument, back in 1972, was trombone. So this impressed the hell out of me. Staff Sgt. Russo, you're my hero!
The bumblebee on that tuba? The would take some lungs, right?
Anyway: Insanely impressive.
When I was a lad, we had two star trumpet players at our high school. The first chair was an economy size gentleman; he could play the solo from Sleigh Ride like Mr. Anderson intended it. Second chair was this wee slip of a girl, maybe 5'1", and she could keep up with first chair. I'm like, "How DO you do that?!" "Practice."
Turns out most people use about half their lung capacity. Brass and wind players? Up to 80%. And they sometimes breathe back in through their instruments to avoid overoxygenation, which is almost as bad for you as too much CO2.
It's only looney toons in the manner of Yakko and the Brain: it's SCIENCE!
BRAVO! I had to see it to believe it!---The snare drummer never quit smiling the whole way through!!!!!
Fantastic performance and so good to have fun with music....BRAVO!
Just amazing! As a former trumpet player, I salute you, Sir. And to top it all off, he was still able to play after putting on chapstick, which I was never able to do. 😲
This makes me seriously want to pull out my old trumpet and play again. I still have it; I bet I remember more than I think I do . . . 🤔
Also, kudos to the band for the theatrics and humor involved.
That's great! When was that performance? It sounds like you saw one of our sister organizations down in Florida and that's awesome!
This was WAY better than advertised! Thank you RUclips algorithm for bringing me this!
I was waiting for her to come back one more time, with a kazoo !!!!!!!
All hail the trombone God!
I played next to this guy today in a concert! Amazing guy!
Dang! He is one smoking trombonist! I've seen those other types of trombone, or knew that they existed. Great job at making them accessible!
Another reason why Trombones are the best!
I mean, Bumblebee on trombone is already impressive, but on steadily shrinking ones is amazing!
Love this!!! Tell Sgt. Jennifer Everhart (Clarinet) I said hello!
This is also played quite well on the tuba by Chuck Daellenbach of the Canadian Brass. I talked to him one evening after a performance and asked how he could defy physics so easily. He said, "it's a trick".
Thoroughly enjoyable, and good lord that man's articulation! WHAT IS HAPPENING!
Some of the best trombone playing I’ve ever heard
