Ron Baker has led a fascinating life. He grew up in small town western Kansas before heading to the big city of Wichita to play basketball for the Shockers. After an all-American career at Wichita State, he fought his way onto the roster of the New York Knicks for three years. After stops in Washington DC and Russia he eventually made it back to Kansas to settle into his post-basketball career. We also take a look back into the history of Wichita State basketball to the original court they played on over 100 years ago. Such a fun episode! As always on Tuesdays, thanks to Curt Rierson for the edit!
A fine American. Well spoken, motivating haircut, clean collared and buttoned shirt. Respectful language. No cell phone in his hand. A very rare man. MAN! Few left like him.
He’s definitely a terrific and authentic guy!
Ron Baker one of Utica's finest. I went to grade school for one year with his dad, my niece and nephew went to grade school in Utica with him. His grandpa still lives there. I got to hold him when he was a newborn, his mom and dad came into the bar to eat when I worked there. He was crying so I thought I would hold him to get him to stop crying so his mom and dad could eat. The bar was called the short branch.
😊
Thanks to Ron Baker for his appearance and participation on the channel. Great story, a highlight video on the channel. John Wise, you should hook Ron up with some Wiseguy merch. A coffee cup or two and a shirt would be a good choice. What a great interview!
Great idea 😊 thanks!
Seems like a terrific example for young Kansans to look up to!
Ron Baker is a prime example of a gentleman and athletic success. Just goes to show, if you dream big enough and work hard enough, all your dreams can indeed come true! 🏀
Excellent interview
He is! Glad I was able to chat with him!
Scott City legend! Love that Ron said “Hays, America”.
I was born in Hays, America in 01/1966. I have lived all over the world, the last 14 years in Tokyo. I still think of western Kansas as home.
Hays is called that because of a guy who used to sell mobile homes in Hays called it that. Home of the mobly mobile homes in beautiful Hays America.
Great conversation with Ron. What a humble guy he is, which one might not expect
For sure! Great guy!
Ron mentioned Lane County! Thanks for the shoutout Ron. What a great example for young boys to model after and look up to.

Ron and Fred are the best complimentary guards to ever play for the Shockers, etched in history forever!
THEY DID IT RIGHT!

Family Man 2024
Ron Baker was a GREAT baller !! Watched him
Play many times !!
He was a stud!
Very good interview, you're finding truly interesting folks to showcase. Mr. Baker should write a book of his travels, accomplishments and adventures. Wish he and his family all the best. Stay safe and GOD bless
Thank you - I’m lucky to be around some interesting people!
What a great video 📸📸 Didn't know anything about this young man. But I'm quite bit older too. Very kind, respectful gentleman. Thank you John Wise❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks!
What you see is what you get with Mr. Baker. I've never met him in person, but I watched him play in high school games and have seen him a number of times in public when he's been back in Scott City. He is friendly and speaks to everyone, courteous (I've seen him hold the door open for others at the local coffee shop, school, restaurants, etc.) respectful, helpful and remains supportive of our community, and extremely humble. I traveled with friends to Denver when the Knicks played the Nuggets, and when the coach put Ron in the game, the Scott City fans did not disappoint! We put those sleepy Nuggets fans to shame! This is a treat to step through memories and hear from him. I hope he realizes the pride we continue to feel for him. Thank you, Coach Wise, for sharing this interview with your comminuty!
That’s great to hear about Ron. All my experiences with him have been positive. He was roommates with guys on the track team in college and he would come support them at the meets - not something a lot of big time basketball players would do!
Love the travel videos of the small towns and places of interest. But these Tuesday videos have also been fun to watch. They are just as interesting and informative as the travel videos. Thanks for trying something different, and bringing it to us to enjoy.
I appreciate that! I definitely have more to come like this on Tuesdays 😊

Great interview. Glad he is doing well.
Wow, what a neat person. Ron, has come into his best years of life... What a great place to raise children. It will be interesting to see if he will eventually go into a career in Physical Therapy... It does have a steep learning curve and tuition costs though. Thank you for showing us some of campus of WSU, I need to visit Wichita again, so much has changed since 2000s. Thank you for another interesting video.
Thank you! Yes Wichita and WSU have changed quite a bit since I arrived in 2006!
Great interview and glad to hear that he has made a successful transition to life after basketball
Thanks! Yes seems like he’s doing quite well!
Great video Coach. I enjoyed the interview with Ron Baker. 😎👍
Thank you! Such a fascinating life he’s led!
The Schockers came within a whisper of winning the National Championship against Kentucky. Kentucky found out there wer up against a very formidable Team. Baker was a great shooter.
Great game!
I love these interview videos too! Wiseguy, love your vids!
Much appreciated! Thanks a lot!
Very interesting episode. I remember Ron Baker well from the glory days of the MIssouri Valley rivalry between Wichita State and Creighton.
Ron has lived a very interesting life-best wishes to him and his family.
I loved the part when he talked about Phil Jackson 😊
Thank you really enjoyed the interview! Good job
Glad you enjoyed it! I had fun with this one too 😊
THANKS COACH 😊 BE SAFE
Always! Thanks!
I started out at Wichita State in 2005 (after taking a year off from HS graduation) during the Mark Turgeon era. The campus was so electric! Won the NIT the previous year, and then suddenly they were ranked in the AP coaches poll, and in the sweet 16! Could I tell you who the players were from that era? Nope lol😅 but the on campus culture then was something else. I wish I could have sticked it out there, but life had other things planned. I don’t ever see Ron at work, but to be honest I think sports medicine is in a building across town, and I’m overnights in Cardiothoracic icu. 😊
When basketball is going well the campus is a lot of fun! Hopefully we can get back to those days again soon 😊
Great interview! Proud Shocker right here 💛🖤
🌾 🌾 😊
☕☕☕Great interview Coach
Thank you! 😊 ☕️
This is so cool! I remember watching him play. Loved learning about his journey!
Hey Coach. Congrats to Ron for his sports accomplishments. Interesting interview. Be well.
Thank you! He’s accomplished so much!
Nice video thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the visit!
Nice...wearing one of Danny's shirts!
Thanks!
Thank you very much 😊 very generous of you!
Cool😎👍
😊😎
Interesting
This was awesome!! Henrion contributor Henry Leavitt? God Bless you and yours 🤓😎
Thanks! Actually Henrion was the last name of the guy who donated money for that building. Interesting coincidence on the names!
John is their anything about Cyrus Mcormack on that campus?
Not that I’m aware of 🤷🏼♂️
Wow, what an interview!! I didn't know he'd spent time in Russia - that's a hard language to learn, glad he had a translator. Thank you for showing the inside of Henrion, I think it was the ROTC building when I was out there (graduated in '93) - that old photo of the inside reminds me of the film "Splendor in the Grass". I guess seating for the original football stadium is just to the south of Henrion (didn't learn about that until recently) - as a student, I'd see the structure and wonder why they'd build a triangular-shaped building, but now it makes sense. I thought the comments from both of you about growing up in a small town were interesting - I've heard it said that one of the benefits of doing so is that each person has a greater opportunity to be the best at or noted for something positive, which builds confidence and a sense of achievement - which often persists and benefits that individual even when they move into a bigger town or city. Yet another reason to love small towns.
You are correct about the old football field. I was going to show that too but totally forgot 🤦🏼♂️ I like how he talked about growing up in a small town then moving to the city 😊
