    Happy Birthday.
Been watching your YT channel off and on since 2014.
I am an IT manager for a major shipping organization. I have experience with Starlink, and shipboard networks, nav. systems, etc ... I would not have run that the way you did, but it works for you and you understand it, so I'd leave it be. There's nothing glaringly awful about it.
Starlink is really still in its infancy, do not get rid of your Iridium, keep it as a backup ... there are still big holes in Starlink coverage maps (though they'll tell you there aren't).
That RV antenna is not nearly as robust as the marine variant ... I would suggest stowing it when not in active use. I would also use a VPN whenever you can, Starlink ground stations are all over the world and every countries laws are different ... VPN to a country you know the laws for. There are personal safety reasons I say that for too.
The only thing that really made me cringe was the Synology NAS, I'm hoping it is very well ventilated at the back, heat will kill hard drives, sometimes very quickly because the air gap between the platters and the heads is in microns, heat can swell the platters enough to crash the heads, I would shut it gown if the ambient temp at the fan intake was over 30C. With all the motion of the boat, if you haven't done it already, I would recommend replacing all of your mechanical drives with solid state drives. It will increase the performance a good deal and eliminate mechanical failures of the drives themselves from gyroscopic motion.
If you haven't already seen it happen, or disabled it, that NAS is going to try and update when it gets an internet connection ... be careful, the DSM software is good, just make sure you read everything before allowing the update. I've seen people wipe out their entire array by not following the guidance from Synology. Lastly, I hope you have the NAS on an UPS with a good power conditioner, especially if there are mechanical drives ... variances in power has been a prime cause of failure of many of the NAS I've had to replace. Though, admittedly, the NAS I tend to deal with are about $40K a piece full of SSD's and draw quite a bit of power.

      @0xKruzr Год назад +2

supercomputing engineer here: I would second what you said about heat. they'd be in much, much better shape if they went all-SSD with those bays (though I get that can be prohibitively expensive). the bridge makes sense, I think.

      Hi
I am an IT technician from Sweden and a sailor.
yes I agree with @battlehymn6389 to 100% mechanical Hard drives worst enemy is heat it kills most HD then they are sensitive to different voltages/volts. And I reacted immediately when I saw the installation of the NAS disks, which do not have much airflow as the front does not cool the disks. The same applies to the location of your mobile refrigerator you built. A refrigerator needs a lot of airflow to be able to work effectively on hot days when it is built-in, it is always hot days for the built-in cooling unit. And turn off automatic updates of your NAS. Since the firmware update must not be interrupted by, for example, the power is cut off, which can kill the software that controls the NAS. Make updates manually when you have full control over the connection to the network and secure the power supply. I would also recommend SSD disks have enough experience after 30 years in IT that they last better than mechanical disks and don't get nearly as hot and draw less power. But you can save your videos even if the accident happens But you have to take out the mechanical discs and to back up the data on the discs This is very expensive and costs more than you paid for the boat many times more in Sweden about 2000+ dollars per hard drive .. So get a cloud service for storage where you automatically update "new" data using the right software. I myself got rid of all my photos and movies when my private NAS died. After that, I pay for cloud services for my storage, which also functions as a database as long as you have a connection to the internet, which you now have via Starlink. But the same applies to your laptops. The heat is going to kill it one day. Never put a LapTop in bed on the sofa directly on the blanket or on soft heat-insulating surfaces. Always have a hard plate base so that the air can circulate under the laptop where it always gets hot, such as a breakfast tray or similar as base ground for the laptop. An overheated laptop melts the tin on the circuit board and it goes fast. Then it doesn't get a second chance, it just dies and won't start again. Have comforted many who came with a fairly new laptop that died of overheating. Good luck with your sailing following you and looking forward to your new uploads live broadcasts via Starlink.

Starlink became available in Haiti in April at $50 a month! We were among the first to receive the system in Haiti. It's opened up a new world to us and we hope to share it with some of our local schools here in Port-a-Piment when the schools reopen (it's also why we've been able to binge watch Sailing Uma for the past couple of months). Before we depended on Digicel and Natcom but it was constant interruptions and poor quality signal. What a treat to be able to watch Sailing Uma at the highest quality. Sailing Uma becomes an immersive experience!!

FYI you need to get two 4G antenas for MIMO 4G, it will massisly improve your speed and stablity, rather than having one. Also putting them up higher will help. Another option is direction LPDA Antenna. They are way faster again than dual omidirectional, but u need to reajust them because they are directional. With dual LPDA antenna you can easly get 150MBs upto 300Mbs around towns of the Med. DM me if you need details.

Just place another nas at your parents house or somewhere else with stable connection.
Like this your data always back up to the remote NAS.
Now having starlink, you should be able to backup your data continuosly :)

Ok, videos are probably serveral TB, the own Nas at a friend's is probably cheaper on the long run. But do you upload this much data over the air? I would recommend to consult with Des and Jordan, they has a like situation and choose to get another boat, I think they would have good perspective regarding changing boats.

As a system admin, make sure that NAS is well vented so it doesnt get too hot. without normal climate control onboard, it can shorted the life of that unit. i have several of the same NAS.. Cheers on the upgrade. setup Cloud Sync to send your onboard footage to a google drive or Onedrive account for cloud backup of your footage.

So for backing up your footage. Perhaps there is a patron in the med with waterfront property and a fiber internet connection? I'd ask, if someone has fiber on the water then you can run a fiber cable directly to the boat and upload your library at 1gig. Otherwise it will take a very long time.
I have no clue how common fiber internet is in the med, so the other option would be taking your drives to a house on land with fiber and pushing it all up to the cloud.
Backplaze has good rates for storage

Yeah Starlink :) Unfortunately I also have to stress on the NAS-thing: Please always have a Backup of the data on this single point of failure, easiest way might be a big USB-Harddrive that you can plug in to the NAS and let it copy everything over to the USB-Drive once a week, or just a duplicate NAS on the boat that you only turn on once a week to sync the data over.
Please make sure the NAS does not overheat in the tight cabinet.
Please consider SSDs if you dont already have, way more expensive then HDDs, but gyro-effects/inertia of the spinning discs are strong and HDDs are propably not made or tested for your kind of use. Have a nice day :)

Nice setup for internet access. I would suggest a quick-disconnect for the entire system when traveling in storms. Seems like one lighting strike could erase all your hard work.

Having spent 3.5 weeks helping a friend deliver his boat from Kauai to San Francisco back around 2002, and currently dreaming about buying a boat to cruise full time, I was thinking I would not even want Iridium, and would rather be completely unplugged. Not sure if I’ll ever set sail, and whether I will feel then it’s worth the possible distraction for the added safety or not.
Glad you have something that works great for you though. Watched from the beginning (not in real time) and it’s been really great watching you become who you both are! Such an inspiration.

Great set up suggest a second Synology NAS at a friends or family location can serve as a back up to your local NAS or you can use Synology cloud backup.
The NAS will serve as your own private VPN and suggest you also use the Synology surveillance camera features which are fantastic.

Cool stuff! I'm glad your work will be nearly instantly safe and accessible. Do keep it off more than on, so you stay connected to yourselves and each other, tho. It's such a slippery slope and it's easy to say it won't change your habits, until you hit THAT moment and say "Oh,". Much love to you guys. Don't get work bench butt!!!
