Re your loose bulkheads, this Pearson was one of the early production boats built with internal liners and bulkhead slots. At the time this was a great saver of time and money. Which meant these boats could be available to the ordinary sailors!
It was never built or expected to last 50 years! ( as you found out when you discovered the , eh, loose keel!)
So please have a little respect for the $5.00/ hr fiberglass workers that built these boats to a tight budget! I know I was one of them! (Different factory).
Love this crazy project!
Cheers Warren
I’m so glad that you guys are brave enough to tackle this project. I’m even more glad that I’m not doing it and just watching.
I am doing it AND watching 😅
What choice do they have? They didn't buy a couch..They bought a hole in the water to through the money in.
@@TheJdeft1 Better than sitting in front of the TV patiently waiting to die
YOUNG enough!
i'm sure I'm not the only one to mention this, but the head and galley are usually on opposite sides of the boat so that there is a physical separation between the intake of raw water and the outlet of sewage. Maybe something to consider when you're putting it all back together.
hey boat builder here, if you want to cut down on the smell DO NOT use the PVC white sanitation hose, use Trident Sani hose #101 or equivalent.. its much more expensive, but the PVC stuff permeates with in a year of use "starts to smell" and the other hose take much longer "6 - 10 years to smell". love your stuff and keep it comin.
Highly recommend painting the inside of the exposed hull with bilge paint for easier cleanup/maintenance..
This guy _bilges_
The demo is almost done, and then the interior can be efficiently painted and outgassed all at once. In the case UMA, we know the results will be amazing.
Uma is the ONLY channel I follow where I don’t skip through the paid promotion!! ❤
Yes… they’re so creative and funny!
... and never seen a better promotion - like: professional 🤣
Me too👍😂
She does a really good job with them.
Kika makes the channel's advertisements very enjoyable to watch - rather than fast forwarding!
Literally liked the video just for the flawless ad integration
Fully agree. I wish that all advertisements would be so entertaining!
It was funny and effective 👍
We bought a 100 year old property with a house and 5 outbuildings and started a winery. We immediately fixed thing and after 10 years re-fixed them properly when we knew what we were doing. Loved your take on re-building the re-build. Following you guys for the last 4 years!
Its nice to see some of the problems are going away, nice to have friends.
RIP IT UP Uma is in good hands with one of the rare couple with an harmonious balance of power! Most other sailing couple definitely have a boss and a silent (or silenced) follower !
Maybe this is the secret that keeps Uma's videos still original and innovative after so long.
This is the most insightful comments ever on RUclips sailing couples!
What great Creative filming of a Life Issue with SUPPORT of a therapist… A free PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT !!
I remember watching Dan and Kika build that sink. What a clever design. I'm looking forwards to seeing what the new head looks like.
When times are tough you two brighten my day. Thanks.
I remember when you installed that bathroom and drop down sink. Y'all were so proud and happy with it!
It was hard to remove because you did such a good job putting it in.
The best RUclips promotion ever ❤
I'm so glad the commercials are back
🤣🤣First, a storage unit without an elevator....UGHHHH!!!! Second, great commercial plug. Love that!
The sponsorship commercial you did was amazing ...I thought it was very funny and entertaining
Great progress! For the record, you guys, and Adam from Professor of Rock do the best Ads for your sponsors. You guys in particular, have the cameo routine using Kika2 so wired. The video is realistic as heck and her interaction/timing with herself is about as pro as it gets. Too cool.
I love your sense of humour and appreciate you keeping us updated on your progress or the lack there of!
One of the awesome things about you two is that you have had to live with your designs. All architects/designers should have to do that.
Totally agree.
I've lost track of how many beautiful designs that didn't work went through our office.
I love when Kika fights with herself in these videos she makes
The head banging was the perfect touch.
Great light-hearted look at a serious issue.
These ads and kinging it are the only ones I watch
That is the BEST commercial EVER!! I’ve seen a lot lately. I usually FF through them!! Absolutely most creative and fun commercial EVER💞💞
The year pass would let you cruise the full Med for all the bonuses of all the possible port stops. Sounds like a great year in the making.
There is nothing more relaxing than watching someone who is working! 😜👍
Thanks, guys! 😎👍
I've never seen you guys so excited to fix all these "problems". Your boat is going to be soooooo quiet and smooth to sail. Good luck!
A double wall should fix a LOT of "i want to hide these hoses/cables/whatevers" problems, make it as a door, and you have a perfectly and orderly place to hide anything you want.
WOW, you lucked into a temporary home and wheels. The demo is moving along and you have a place to store your stuff. Congratulations. I hope the rest of the demo goes well and the rebuild also. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Uma should be a Commercial comedic Writer. She is hilarious😂! Hard to watch Uma be torn apart but it is necessary to restore her. You 2 are so brave to take her apart like a boat surgeon. She is in loving hands. Blessings.
Uma is the boat. Kika is the person
Some days when you have to pull something you installed back out... and you realized you did too good of a job...
Good job keep up the hard work. And we all have done that. Lol.
Cardboard makes a good templating media. CAD - Cardboard Aided Design (as Matts' Off Road Recovery has said).
I am excited to see your rebuild of Ulma.
We just bought a 35ft cruiser with overboard discharge toilet and raw water flush. The boat was mainly used in salt water and Like you said, the combination of human excrement and salt water is no joke. We tried to clean the toilet but the yellow scale line in the bowl was not very impressed when we tried to get rid of it and just stayed. So I decided to pump the bowl dry, wet toilet paper with pure vinegar and drape it over the yellow scale ring. Left it for a few hours, took out the paper and started scrubbing with a scotchbrite. It started to fade very little after a lot of elbow grease so I again put down wet vinager paper and let it sit for again a few hours. More scrubbing, more soaking, more scrubbing. And finally after a full day it gave way and we have a shiny toilet bowl again. Since we have the boat in sweet water I guess that was the last time we saw this yellow ring in the bowl and also are free of bad odor from now on. Keep it up. Great video with humor too. Can'not wait to see what you will design.
I usually HATE inbedded ads, but this time,
I laughed out loud! Kika, PLEASE do this for
every other RUclipsr. Start with "makers,"
since that is most of what I watch. (Like
you guys.)
steve
I am also watching a house renovation (rebuilding at this point) project by Laura Kampf and it feels sooo similar to this.
The motivation and bliss in the beginning, the realisation that everything is way worse than thought, the resignation in the middle and then the acceptance that this is just a chance to do it right and get the living space of your dreams with no problems left to bite you in the long run. It is really cool to wacth!
First, I am extremely pleased that you decided to tackle the all the problems with Uma , upgrade and keep her.... I think she's worth it and I know you do too.. she's going to be awesome when you're done and you'll know it's done right....
Second, I almost died laughing when Kika found her other self in the storage unit...lol
Was expecting:
I don't want to talk about it. Just ... Drive.
Allright. * puts car in gear, begins driving *
It's just that
and so on lol.
Your camera placement and work behind it along with the flawless editing is amazing. And I watched ALL of your hilarious Better Help ad.
You two are not a normal couple. A normal couple would have killed each other by now. This renovation is the craziest thing I've ever seen. Only a couple of geniuses could pull this off.
Normal is vastly overrated...and boring.
CAD-Cardboard Aided Design! it makes the best projects come to life!
Great adjusting & FLOWING with LIFE! Thanks for letting us along for your wonderful living adventure
Great to see how this project gives you guys new "know-how", and the best ting really is that you dident just buy a new boat!
The boat design was built structurally sound and designed by engineers. I would encourage Dan to learn more about why bulkheads are better loosely anchored rather than completely glued in. It’s the same reasons why houses aren’t built airtight. The same reasons why bridges and skyscrapers sway. If you glass in the bulkheads all around the sides of the haul and ceiling floor, you will create a brittle structure. It will break like a fault line in an earth quake.
Interesting comment. Can you please provide some sources of supporting information?
If that were true, then every boat would be built this way. But they're not. In fact every boat we've been able to dig into has much more structure than ours. And every bulkhead is fully glassed to the hull with Sikaflex attaching the deck. These production boats like ours were built to a deadline and budget and for people who don't actually sail very far. Just like your typical camper van is only meant for flat asphalt, and as soon as you take them down a bumpy gravel road, things start to fall apart.
The way you are configuring here is exactly how my Spencer 42 is setup with a starboard side head.
Looking forward to see how this project comes together. I have about half the videos from rebuilding mine up on my channel if you are interested. Did some cool bent plywood in there that was actually pretty easy!
@RenegadeADV
_"Looking forward to see how this project comes together..."_
Yeah, and your own YT fans (including me) were looking forward to seeing how YOUR OWN head rebuild had come together, yet you never put up a single video of its completion, and its been like what, three years? You crack me up. You're always doling out advice to other Creators, yet you never do the same on your own sailing vlog.
Most of us who've renovated something before have been reduced to "just keep hitting it with a hammer" 😂 Great work, I love these renovation videos!
Been following y'all for years and I'm always excited to see your adventures. This has to be on of the biggest undertakings with Uma. I can't wait to see her sailing again with the redesign. Y'all rock!
LOVED the Galaxy Quest reference!
Heya Dan - pro plumber here. The best shower set up is just a shower head on a flexi hose slide mounted on a vertical rail. I've fitted and tried every other type. Beware of these posh selector type set ups. Most just hold stagnant water for months, then people spray it on themselves when they meddle with the settings.... Ugh. No. You must have access to any connections that might require service also, (if you do not wish to waste your time and painstaking work). Very best regards, and I have every confidence!!
All things aside, the storage bin skit is totally hilarious 😂 well done!
I can't wait to see how much more awesome uma becomes
You really rebuild your boat from scratch. Like this a lot of flaws can be eliminated. Your boat will be very unique after and very sophisticated. You will even get rid of some kilos maybe. It looks like you can’t use much from the previous interior. Very interesting project. I understand why you don’t want to buy an other one.
im not going to lie.. love how you fit your ad's into the video...
The follow up to your earlier DIY projects is fascinating. So much to learn from previous work and exciting how you now have an opportunity to improve and make things right for you!
Loved the sponsor ad, and I've never said that before!
Wow.... this is quite the project! But, glad some of the logistics are coming together to buy you the time and space to make it all work! Looking forward to seeing the plans come together again.
I so look forward to your new videos these days. I love your travel and personalities but I really enjoy the do-it-yourself remodeling of your classic sailboat. It's going to be amazing when you're done!
If you are shifting to fresh water flush AND you recognise the plumbing issues with the sink - maybe combine both ideas. There are products on the market which is essentially a toilet with cistern flush and the top of the cistern is a sink that drains into the cistern to provide the toilet flush.
you two have become serious pros
You guys are great. I love Kika's creative side, if only it was just for a second for a commercial. lolz You should do that more often!!
and the reason theres something in front of the stairs is because it prevents you from falling down the stairs and falling 10 feet all the way to the floor instead of falling 5 feet into a counter
Jeez!!!! I admire you two. You're an inspiration to a 55 year old who now has to downscale Goa retirement village. Keep it up!!!! I've been following \watchi g you sine you aquired beloved Uma 😊
That was a really good commercial!
I intentionally sailed from Palma to Alghero through a mistral that was pretty consistently 45 knots but that was with a good crew of 18 people on an old 67ft Challenge yacht with a steel hull. Was a wet and wild three days though :)
I never watch sponsor segments of videos except for yours because they show your creativity and they are also entertaining.
I can’t believe all that stuff in the storage locker fit on Uma.
Never would have imagined Dan was an advocate of CAD (cardboard aided design.) LOL!
You have some great friends! Glad you don’t have to worry about a place to live or a car! 💕
you bought a couch on wheels!?! how could you?!? JK
It's more borrowed than bought :D
🤣
PLEASE DO A LIVE STREAM!!! Would be awesome to sea 😅 literal work in progress
To use you fix a piece of cardboard or plywood in the plain of the bulkhead you want to add. Hold the stick against the cardboard placing the point of the stick at a point along the hull. Draw a line on the cardboard along the notched side of the stick. Repeat at the next point.
I first heard of it from my brother who was a line foreman at a boat building company. He learned it from an old guy he worked with.
In the last year or two several sites have popped up on the internet that explain it better than I. They also have pictures, which helps a lot.
Looking forward to seeing your final design.
C.A.D. Cardboard Aided Design. Using the same '70s tech that built the boat.
backing up a little motorhome is a piece of cake. I am not a sailor but play with a truck and travel trailer. From the back of the bike rack to the front bumper of the truck 61 feet. It is so much fun to back into a tight boondocking site. Love your design ideas and your adventures. Keep up the good work.
True pex plumbing vs copper is superior. Looking good!
THIS IS HILARIOUS !!....I sailed my boat with all the "BUGS"....in retrospect we were "SO LUCKY"and blessed on account we didnt come to greif. The refit takes into account all "THE SHIT" you now have become aware of...😂😂🤣😅😆😁😄.....
The split-Kika-clips are gettting better and better. I can not remember having enjoyed a commercial this much ever...
I just realized why I like your channel so much. You are still on the same boat. No Multimillion dollar cat. Fixin what you got and doing a great job!
I have always loved your design and build projects. (I also like your sailing adventures). But I'm so excited to see more of these types of videos. Good luck!
Love your shows , Ive been watching for ages , your shows are not only entertaining but very informative , well done .
it might be too late or not... but you can make it so you use the shower head in the sink also.... the sink would tuck up under where the shower head is and then when you need the sink you pull that out and then move the shower head lower... just an idea for you all... happy sailing/land living
It’s the small things that makes you happy. We have a trash can that slides across the floor every time we step on the pedal to open it. I used your rubber band idea and it doesn’t move anymore.love your videos. Still thinking you need a new boat.
I sent a message to a nurse practitioner friend of mine to start watching at 5:30!!! LOL.
Jee, you guys make me want to rebuild the interior of my 1976 sailboat.
I am currently rebuilding the rebuild kitchen in our home. When things don't go well I just think of Uma
Watching your demolition is pure motivation for building my vessel my way ! Thank you !!
Great job on the making of the videos and all the takes and cuts it was amazing. I thought I was watching a tv show called this old boat . Spin off of this old house . Again great job guys keep it up.
I personally love the design but to add to why it might have originally been built that way was a privacy factor? Looking in through the companion way from the cockpit you could see straight into the forward berth where as before the head was in the way. Anywho, you two are so inspirational!
It’s not offset enough to block the view into the vbirth. You can still see right in. Also originally the vbirth had a door. But we removed it very early on. There was really no space to close it if you were in there.
Fun to see registration from Nanaimo , ❤ from Van Isle.
You are amazing, never boring. Dan, your tutorials on mechanical and structural is so simple and easy to follow
Another amazing video of DIY! You two really love UMA for all that you are doing. Kudos to you both.
Enjoy your channel - cool to see you guys saving Uma - she is wonderful.
Storage lockers on a second floor and NO elevator! What genius thought of that? Liked the commercial. Great cinematography..
You guys are amazing so I hesitate to suggest that there might be something you may have overlooked regarding the floating bulkheads. It COULD be that they are floating to keep from putting hard-point stresses on the hull. I am not saying that is the case, just that you might want to consider the possibility.
What great friends...their is still great people around..
We do salt water rinse for everyday use and fresh water for when we leave it for a while. No smell of the head.
beautiful, unbelievably creative
Wow what a challenge!
I absolutely love, love love that you two are tackling this! Some people think that Fred Sanford is dead, but he’s alive and well and living inside of me! I am the rescuer Of things that everyone else love to throw away! You to just do it, and I might need a fashion and myself. But like you, I am having the absolute time of my life at 63 years old.
So many feels. (a) I live on Quadra Island, BC and it makes me smile every time I see Nanaimo next to Uma on your stern. (b) Kika rules for that ad insert. I've said it before and I'm saying it again, the consistent creativity of your storytelling and activities is what keeps me coming back. (c) Your demo/build explainers are a huge value to me as another boat owner. At the very best, they help with navigating the design and build decisions to be made. At the very least I know the nasty stuff in my bilges is not unique to my boat. Thank you so much! Love you guys and rock on!
Love the big hair!
I love that you're keeping Uma alive but man, what a project.
I can't wait to see what designs yall come up with!!!
I am SO IMPRESSED that Kika knows how to drive a car with a standard transmission! Here in the U.S.A. it's nearly impossible to even buy a car with a standard. Everything is automatic now! (But I must admit, those DCT - Dual Clutch Transmissions - are pretty darned good!
Anyway! You Go, Girl!
In Europe we found its the other way around. You’d have to really get out of your way to find an automatic car
