6:50 The birds are probably used to fishing boats and they usually throw guts away when gutting the fish, so they are basically waiting for food. :) The weather on the passage was amazing, unbelievable really how good of a weather you seem to have got there.... *EDIT I feel like i've seen the landscape in the last shot somewhere :D
Kika, Dan, while you guys consistently create probably the most professionally produced content on any sailing channel, your choiced=s of adventure and exploration are truly _epic_ . I can imagine how much more comfortable mediterranean cruising might be but the exploration to extremes is something that you will be able to proudly talk about for the rest of your sailing career/lives. That was fantastic! It was a bit nostalgic for me too, as I started to watch your channel when you arrived in Norway. It was to be such an adventure, how could anyone NOT watch! Now that you've made it to Iceland, it's sad that you've left all those jaw-droppingly beautiful places behind, but there are still a bunch of great adventures to come. Hats off to Nick & Terysa for properly introducing you two to a wider audience. I had seen just one episode of Sailing Uma, when you sailed on the Daz Cat 1295, but the face-time(?) interview gave an encapsulation of your prior adventures and hooked me right then and there. Then watching these films and seeing the world though your eyes has been a very enriching experience - thank you so much!
Uma's Fog bound sailing reminds me of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" by C. S. Lewis, Instead of being surrounded by white flowers, you have thousands of white birds.
When I saw the birds the first thing that came to mind was Alfred Hitchcocks movie " The Birds " and you were Tippi Hedren. It was that eerie and yet kewl, watching the birds gracefully arc around Uma. Yeah, the movie reference gives away my age, but watching you guys sail up north is a nice change of pace. And right now, the farther away from the south pacific the better. Our prayers to everyone in that part of the world.
It’s been wonderful watching you mature into the honed and veteran sailors you’ve become over these few years. If watching your skills and confidence grow as navigators hasn’t been enough, it’s equally matched by your talents as filmmakers.
Glad you took your "mobile marina" with you! It's an illusion to think that anything goes with electric, exclusively. Unless in the rare places where sun and wind provide enough usable energy 24/365, there has to be some cord power like a generator, a marina or a (super)charger. Serial hybrid with good batteries in the middle all but guarantees that the inevitable inconveniences of running a motor are kept to minimum time and maximum efficiency.
Unless you're sailing to the world's most remote places like they have done, there's no need for a generator. And even then, they said their batteries were still at 66% when they left Jan Meyen. Like Dan said they could have made it to Iceland without the generator if they didn't stop at Jan Mayen. That tells me that for 99.9% of sailors, their setup with regen and solar will be sufficient.
@@saschamaj I might agree to 99 % of all situations but with limitations where to stay. We also have to keep in mind that D&K are living quite frugally. Regen requires elevated boat speeds = wind speed + sailing, not always desired or available. Last but not least, w/o a generator, cord power becomes shore power which means docking availability and costs.

When you find a hot spring, think about describing the smell for those who have never been to Iceland. It sounds like a very wired idea, but I've been around the globe by plane, and certain countries have distinct olfactory experiences, completely not captured on film
You know how the scent of a pine tree and peppermint transports you to, maybe, childhood Christmas, and coconut you feel like you're on the beach? One of my towels, I used in Iceland, and I literally had to throw it away when I got home. But the powerful odor of sulfur also makes me feel the energy, the power, of geothermal heating. You can see steam rising from the sidewalks, sometimes hot water will even erupt in the street, but the energy is harnessed and used for heating. So the smell is strong and amazing, with a beauty and mystic energy embedded into Iceland. You do such a beautiful job of showing us with your amazing videos, just ponder describing the smell of Iceland, as this memory overwhelms me whenever someone else talks about it.

Since they choose to rely on regenerative energy, Iceland will be soooo intriguing for them. Whenever I think of the hot springs there, my main memory is of the smell. Maybe this is something some people will appreciate even more, after possibly losing their sense of taste and smell for a time. Also, appreciating energy. I'm thankful that talented RUclips videos still exist, and we can continue to have some hope.
When I was a boy, a boat tour operator in Newfoundland named his boat the Northern Fulmar because he was told those birds rarely are found near land and always on the wing. Those birds look well fed. They were barely able to fly. They are behaving more like puffins when they over eat. What a great discovery. As much as you want to be south now you have been more interesting to watch for your spirit in going north instead of those that go south.
This has been an epic season watching the two of you. Way out of the ordinary cruising vids, but the editing and cinematography are what really set it apart. Thanks for letting us tag along. ♥♥♥

@@SailingUma That looked like a Fin Whale doing his deep dive at 8:18. They go down for a long time and sometimes travel very far while down, so his next blow may have been half a mile from where he dove.
I am a non-professional photographer but quite passionate about the craft. I do understand what shutter bugs have to go through to get the shot. You have gotten the shot above the Artic circle which is amazing to me. Your northern voyage has been packed with jaw dropping land/water scape photography and the best thing about it you have brought us along for the ride. I much appreciate what you are doing especially considering I can experience the journey from my warm home in Florida. Keep those toes warm!

That exposed, open sky shot of the sun you hadn’t seen full blast in a long while was so stunning with the suns’ rays racing brightly OUT EVERYWHERE. Was surreal looking and celebratory like it was warming y’all personally and dramatically as a reward for surviving so long without it: welcoming you back with a bright heat sucker. Awesome.

Love all your videos. We too have an electric sailboat and I'm going to get a generator like yours as sometimes we have "range anxiety". Hopefully we'll hardly ever use it as our engine enables us to "ghost" around our cruising area. If you decide to come near Scotland on your next leg.....make sure to cruise the West Coast. You won't regret it. Oh and we'd love to meet you, as I think most of the Scottish West Coast sailors would too.
As always breathtaking footage. The one significant thing I noticed in all your descriptions while traveling, even with days with no other human contact, you never use the word “alone”. You always seem so secure that the idea of aloneness doesn’t enter your mind. You have truly mastered cinematography with the drone. It ads that wonderful birds eye view. Guys! You just celebrated Iceland arrival (which was most well deserved) with a bottle of Spanish "cava", a drink which resembles french champagne but with its unique features. The bottle from "Segura Viudas" cava cellar is so beautiful that you may use it as a table lamp after sone little adaptations. Enoy the cava and the sail!

Many folks have tried to make it to Iceland, and never got there. That’s because Iceland is mischievous. You reached it so well because you approached it perfectly, by passing it by a long way the first time, going via Norway and then even heading further North. You spiralled in on it, and by the time it realised you were coming, it was too late! Clever Kika & Dan!

Great video! Kika just like you I have a passion for photography and boy do you guys do a great JOB at it. I would like to think I'm not the only one in the Uma Nation with this passion. I know you guys have done some episodes talking about photography equipment but I don't recall an episode talking about setting up your shots, ISO, f-stops, speeds, metering and all the technical nerdy things related to photography. It's an illusion to think that anything goes with electric, exclusively. Unless in the rare places where sun and wind provide enough usable energy 24/365, there has to be some cord power like a generator, a marina or a (super)charger. Serial hybrid with good batteries in the middle all but guarantees that the inevitable inconveniences of running a motor are kept to minimum time and maximum efficiency.
Unless you're sailing to the world's most remote places like they have done, there's no need for a generator. And even then, they said their batteries were still at 66% when they left Jan Meyen. Like Dan said they could have made it to Iceland without the generator if they didn't stop at Jan Mayen. That tells me that for 99.9% of sailors, their setup with regen and solar will be sufficient.
@@saschamaj I might agree to 99 % of all situations but with limitations where to stay. We also have to keep in mind that D&K are living quite frugally.
Regen requires elevated boat speeds = wind speed + sailing, not always desired or available. Last but not least, w/o a generator, cord power becomes shore power which means docking availability and costs.

When you find a hot spring, think about describing the smell for those who have never been to Iceland. It sounds like a very wired idea, but I've been around the globe by plane, and certain countries have distinct olfactory experiences, completely not captured on film
You know how the scent of a pine tree and peppermint transports you to, maybe, childhood Christmas, and coconut you feel like you're on the beach? One of my towels, I used in Iceland, and I literally had to throw it away when I got home. But the powerful odor of sulfur also makes me feel the energy, the power, of geothermal heating. You can see steam rising from the sidewalks, sometimes hot water will even erupt in the street, but the energy is harnessed and used for heating. So the smell is strong and amazing, with a beauty and mystic energy embedded into Iceland. You do such a beautiful job of showing us with your amazing videos, just ponder describing the smell of Iceland, as this memory overwhelms me whenever someone else talks about it.

Since they choose to rely on regenerative energy, Iceland will be soooo intriguing for them. Whenever I think of the hot springs there, my main memory is of the smell. Maybe this is something some people will appreciate even more, after possibly losing their sense of taste and smell for a time. Also, appreciating energy. I'm thankful that talented RUclips videos still exist, and we can continue to have some hope.
When I was a boy, a boat tour operator in Newfoundland named his boat the Northern Fulmar because he was told those birds rarely are found near land and always on the wing. Those birds look well fed. They were barely able to fly. They are behaving more like puffins when they over eat. What a great discovery. As much as you want to be south now you have been more interesting to watch for your spirit in going north instead of those that go south.
Very hard to imagine arriving in Iceland after sailing SOUTH 1000 miles!

@@SailingUma That looked like a Fin Whale doing his deep dive at 8:18. They go down for a long time and sometimes travel very far while down, so his next blow may have been half a mile from where he dove.
I am a non-professional photographer but quite passionate about the craft. I do understand what shutter bugs have to go through to get the shot. You have gotten the shot above the Artic circle which is amazing to me. Your northern voyage has been packed with jaw dropping land/water scape photography and the best thing about it you have brought us along for the ride. I much appreciate what you are doing especially considering I can experience the journey from my warm home in Florida. Keep those toes warm!

Love all your videos. We too have an electric sailboat and I'm going to get a generator like yours as sometimes we have "range anxiety". Hopefully we'll hardly ever use it as our engine enables us to "ghost" around our cruising area. If you decide to come near Scotland on your next leg.....make sure to cruise the West Coast. You won't regret it. Oh and we'd love to meet you, as I think most of the Scottish West Coast sailors would too.
As always breathtaking footage. The one significant thing I noticed in all your descriptions while traveling, even with days with no other human contact, you never use the word “alone”. You always seem so secure that the idea of aloneness doesn’t enter your mind. You have truly mastered cinematography with the drone. It ads that wonderful birds eye view. Looking forward to partying Iceland. It’s a fascinating place.

Guys! You just celebrated Iceland arrival (which was most well deserved) with a bottle of Spanish "cava", a drink which resembles french champagne but with its unique features. The bottle from "Segura Viudas" cava cellar is so beautiful that you may use it as a table lamp after sone little adaptations. Enoy the cava and the sail!

Many folks have tried to make it to Iceland, and never got there. That’s because Iceland is mischievous. You reached it so well because you approached it perfectly, by passing it by a long way the first time, going via Norway and then even heading further North. You spiralled in on it, and by the time it realised you were coming, it was too late! Clever Kika & Dan!
You two should be very proud of what you have achieved in getting to Iceland. All that way, calm and confident. Amazing stuff.

Sailing 1000 miles heading south, dreaming the warm sun on naked skin- and then arriving icellands northern coast.-- There is just a little bit to go swirling around some ice bergs only against the whole gulf stream. Pure sailors patience! keep on keeping on!!

Great video! Kika just like you I have a passion for photography and boy do you guys do a great JOB at it. I would like to think I'm not the only one in the Uma Nation with this passion. I know you guys have done some episodes talking about photography equipment but I don't recall an episode talking about setting up your shots, ISO, f-stops, speeds, metering and all the technical nerdy things related to photography. Just food for thought!
There are others I also love, but you two are without a doubt the most interesting and capable sailors of all the sailing RUclipsrs. I have so much respect for you both
