North of the arctic circle in a $3000 boat with a sketchy keel brought back to life by two crazy ambitious wanna be sailors and world travelers. You both have come a long way and done an amazing job creating and delivering entertaining content of sailing, exploring, and improving little Uma. Well done to the both of you ... darn well done

A Norwegian called Jarle Andøy pushed his luck too far, producing television show from north and south pole in ordinary sailboat, ended in disaster, boat froze to ice and sank, crew died. Ice can be a problem, should be a well known fact since Titanic. But the winter in mainland Norway is over, so it should not be to extreme, as long as they keep track on weather and wind.

The worst part about UMA videos is having to wait for the next one!! I discovered their vids in my feed (which was odd) about 6 weeks ago and thought I'd have a look. So, 265 episodes later I'm still here and now want a sailboat! Lol. Love these guys!

I was grinning ear to ear as you did your crossing the Arctic Circle ceremony. Love to see you two super human kids do what you do in a vessel that you brought back to life and learned to sail basically from scratch. The fact that you sail almost to and from your dock or anchorage. To two are real sailors and not some sort of weekend 'sailors'. You are both informative and goofy at the same time. A real treat to watch you both.

In the United States Navy there is a tradition when crossing the Arctic Circle. The crew would dress up in beach attire and go out on the main weather deck where the Captain would paint everyone’s nose blue by dipping his finger in blue paint. The ship’s bull nose was also painted blue indicating its crossing.

As a child I grew up in a small college town. Once a month a traveler would come to town and show movies of their travels. They were called travelogues. We couldn’t wait until the next one would come with stories of the outside world. We didn’t have a television so these events were special. Now I’m blessed with a travelblog every week from several travelers of which yours is my favorite. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. It enriches our lives.

While I find crossing the Arctic circle a worthy accomplishment I find myself asking why you would stay so far north for so long. I used to enjoy your videos but I’m liking them less and less since you’ve made the decision to live in the freezing north for so long. I frankly find your videos since you have been up there to be boring and dull. I live in Florida and have done a little day sailing and when I daydream of buying a sailboat and going wherever the spirit moves me the last place I would pick is where you guys have been for the past year. I live under a blue sky in crystal clear warm water with a hot sun and tons of animal and marine life to entertain me and provide an endless seafood buffet. Fresh fruit and vegetables and different cultures and cuisines just hours away for fun and diversity. The sameness that I see you guys have up there would drive me nuts. I really don’t believe most viewers of sailing vids are looking to emulate your current lifestyle choices but to each his own. This is just my opinion but until your videos get interesting again I won’t be watching them anymore. Just thought you might want to hear a differing opinion for what it’s worth.

You two are becoming old pros! In years to come, you'll absolutely treasure the crazy winter weather. Humans are funny that way...
As for the Arctic Circle, you called it just a bit early! The position of the Arctic Circle is not fixed and currently runs 66°33′48.6″ north of the Equator. Its latitude depends on the Earth's axial tilt, which fluctuates within a margin of more than 2° over a 41,000-year period, owing to tidal forces resulting from the orbit of the Moon. Consequently, the Arctic Circle is currently drifting northwards (shrinking) at a speed of about 15 m (49 ft) per year. (Wikipedia)
Converting to decimal degrees, we have N 66.5635. You know... Just for future reference so you know when to celebrate on the way back home!
As for drinking the ocean, "A single liter of seawater has about one billion bacteria and 10 billion viruses." - Smithsonian
Thankfully, we evolved to handle it just fine. :)

Spent 5 years in the Coast Guard in the early 80's on an Icebreaker and there used to be a full blown all day initiation that new sailors went through when you crossed the Artic Circle. First timers where "Blue Noses". Veterans who had been across before and had been through the initiation in the past were Polar Bears. Shortly after leaving port & heading North there was all ship muster were all the Blue Noses were called out and given a Royal Subpoena from the Captain of the Ship. The subpoena was an order to appear before the court of King Neptune once the ship had crossed the Artic Circle. King Neptune, in most cases, was always the sailor who had the most sea time. After receiving the subpoena first timers then had their noses marked blue by the XO. The Polar Bears ran the initiation and lets just say it would never fly in today's politically correct society. It was all in good fun and you weren't required to go through with it but most of us did. It didn't matter if you were an officer or an enlisted...everyone was treated the same. In fact it used to be such a highly regarded right that it was noted in your personnel record and certificates were issued. Even though no one got hurt there is no way this could ever happen today on the scaled that it did 40 years ago...people would end up in jail.

I have been following you both for quite a while. Now the question occurs to me - did you go to the marina primarily because the weather (no sun for a week or so....) forced you to seek a source for electrical power? You were in a anchorage that looked secure to me.Ir makes me wonder how far are you along with your research on a wind generator. It sounds like a generator would have kept you fully charged. And so the saga continues on discovering what the limitations are (if any) on sailing "electrically" as you do (except for cooking and heating - and doing laundry....). Keep sailing, keep sharing. I do look forward to your weekly segments.

That's pretty cool. Did you notice that the air is a lot more dense when it is cold. So 15 knots, responds to the sails a lot more like 18 knots of warm air.

I have no desire to sail into the Arctic Circle. If I did, have such a desire, I would require a much bigger boat with lots of heat. I do enjoy your adventure into that area.

I think I see two smaller lines coming from the jib near the clew into the cockpit? Lazy reef lines?? Your rigging is so awesome, just like your journey and yourselves! Thanks so much for all the fun & inspiration!
