    Another hack (not just for ADHD): if you notice you always have a pile of laundry under you piano, put a landry basket there! Not placing things where they 'should' go, but where you actually use them.

      Love this! I did something similar, I had a hamper for a while that had a lid, and I noticed that I’d just pile dirty clothes on top or stuff I tried on but didn’t put away. So I got a hamper without a lid and I *mostly* stopped doing it! It’s so important to design spaces to shape the behavior we want from ourselves (and others!)

    When you said you keep things “intentionally messy” I have never connected to something more. If it’s not out, it’s not getting used.

    • @mkat8505
      @mkat8505 Год назад +34

      And the next step after that is changing your space to give that "intentional mess" a home. Like her random pile of laundry? Maybe she could accept it camps out there frequently and give it a guest home in the form of a collapsible hamper or something. "Messy" intentional table top? Maybe look for a decorative box or tray that you can set on top of its own lid 90% of the time, but then cover when you have company.

      @epicdogbattles 10 месяцев назад +26

      yo that makes me wanna have a "messy box" or "holding zone" in every room that is intentionally for stuff like the windex or fabric spray that need to stay out and bounce. i have a need for grouping in my adhd, if i cant easily put stuff in a bunch of specific piles i will leave it out. its all about allowing yourself to work with your adhd at home, in your safe space.

      @@mkat8505 I don't understand having a random pile of clean laundry because they'll need to be ironed or re-washed. If they're dirty, that's what a hamper with a lid is for. You'll remember you have dirty clothes once you either *A)* can no longer close the lid OR *B)* run out of clean underwear.

    My toiletries live in a basket. In the morning, I take them all out and put each item back into the basket as I use it so I know if I've put deodorant or lotion on yet. In the shower, I do the same with the products. They move from one shelf to the other as I use them.

      Brilliant. Too much stuff sitting out can get visually overstimulating for me. But at the same time, if I don't have a visual cue, things just do not exist and I WILL forget. I have all daily staples/rituals tied together like a basket of fish hooks in my top vanity drawer. Face, hair, deodorant, etc. all visually present when I open the drawer so my brain will remeber each task, but then shut away the rest of the time.

    I don’t have ADHD, my sister does, but I have autism and we share hacks sometimes because some hacks and solutions work for both of us even if they work for different reasons.
    A few months ago, someone taught me the bag method and it changed my life. I have a small apartment and I cant easily keep things out so I have them in bags. Need to get ready for work? Grab the work bag in the bathroom. I will empty out everything in it and place it all over my counter and then as I use each item it goes back into the bag. When the counter is empty I know I have remembered everything (especially deodorant) and then I just zip the bag up and put it away.
    It’s basically a giant visual checklist and I can use the bag method for all kinds of different things. It’s also ok to have duplicates of items. I have a deodorant in my get ready for work bag and I also have one in my get ready for a normal (not work) day bag. It’s ok if I have multiples as long as they actually get used.
    Total game changer for me and it works for my sister too. Hope this helps someone else. ❤

    • @Sypherz
      @Sypherz 7 месяцев назад +3

      I have to have multiples as well. I keep a copy wherever I most use them. And found I remember things, or have motivation for things, as soon as I get to work, so I keep copies of those things at work - like deodorant, vitamins, toothbrush and paste.

    The best advice I ever got was from a book called Organization for ADHD (iirc) the biggest thing was how it suggested more open, functional storage. It also emphasized the importance of things being convenient to put away, rather than convenient to retrieve. You know how it is when you’re on a project warpath? No amount of digging stops you. But cleanup is another story.
    Here some personal tips:
    1) paper drawer. Maybe it’s an old bill, copy of your lease, a w2 from two years ago. (If you’re a student, school stuff as well) Will I need this? I don’t know. Boom throw it in the paper drawer (or basket or whatever) when you throw stuff in there it is naturally sorted chronologically. If you do realize you were given a paper forever ago you that you actually need, you know to look towards the bottom bc it’s old. Saved my ass and also saved me from having weird receipts around my house all the time.
    2) I got one of those garage shelves for my art supplies. If it was art stuff, it sat on the big open shelves. I could see everything and clean up was a breeze

    • @Sypherz
      @Sypherz 7 месяцев назад +2

      Digging stops me. It's a huge hurdle for getting things done. However, part of the reason I spend so much time digging is because the thing did not get put away to where it was "supposed" to go. So having homes that make it convenient to put away helps me too!

    Normally I wouldn't comment on older videos but damn, this speaks to me! This is the first apartment I've ever seen in a video that makes me think "I'd live there. My apartment could actually look like this"
    I've been recently diagnosed and so much makes sense now. I love the phrase 'intentionally messy'. I too keep things like my deodorant visible so I don't forget it. But in a studio apartment things look messy so quickly. Whenever I have someone visit I used to think I need to hide all my stuff because I don't want people to think less of me. I recently talked to some of my friends about how I never invited them because I felt like my apartment was always too messy and cleaning it and then also hosting was just too much. They all said that they literally don't care if my apartment is a mess. They care about quality time with me and if that means sitting on the balcony because my dining table is full of painting supplies that's fine. One even offered to come over for body doubling If I need help sticking to my decluttering plans.
    But back to the video: the "hacks" that I'll definitely try out (well at least if I remember in two weeks because I'll be on vacation till then😅) are introducing more smells (I love my candles but I never burn them in summer because its too hot already so I feel like essential oils might be a game changer) and possibly more christmas lights. I have the lighting in my main space set up quite nicely but it never occurred to me that my bathroom and my bed nook could use some dim lighting as well. Also music for the bathroom might be good... but my bathroom is so tiny that I don't really know if it's a possibility. Maybe a water proof battery powered speaker could be am option... anyway I'm rambling and you all don't need to read my musings about my apartment but I wanted to just thank you for the video. It really set in motion some great ideas for me.

    Thank you for showing us your real life ADHD living space. I carry this sense of guilt with me because my kitchen countertops are full of food items. The reason is because I can’t remember I have food if it’s behind the cupboards. I have to come to terms with being OK with having things on my kitchen countertop. And not being able to live like the Kitchen Countertops in magazines and RUclips videos. It’s really all about making adjustments to make your life easier especially when we have a hard time remembering so many things.

      Hey @jenshark4!
      I think not even for people in those videos the places look like what we get to see. Most people probably hide stuff on the other side of the camera, in a cupboard or whatever.
      And if they do look like it: what's the price they pay? Is worth the time and effort? That really depends on the person.
      But what I mostly wanted to say: if you need to see everything but don't want it on the counter: maybe taking off the doors to your cupboards could help!
      I heard that it works for some people. You could use clear containers for easier access.
      Another way could be to use vertical space on your counter. Getting little shelves so you can better reach your items by not having to stack them so much.
      Have a good day :) 🌻

      100% part of the book club! I need to physically entice myself so I must leave my treats in spots that can tempt me while I'm on my way to a something.
      My story was actually flipped. Severe chronic gastritis finally lead me to my ADHD diagnosis. I'm still struggling with food. But another thing I've had to shamelessly resign myself to is kids food. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (luckily that means there are sneakily healthier options now for the kids) but. If today all I can eat is some fish cakes and a mini pizza, then that is okay.
      Lunch box strips of cheese crackers hanging out in the lounge, next to the mini milkshakes 👌🏼(milkshake is great for morning meds with no appetite. But hopefully you manage a couple crackers to line the stomach before not thinking of food again until about 19:00)

    Good call out on lighting. For myself, I actually prefer bright lights to keep me awake. I have smart bulbs throughout my house and setup a shortcut for “I’m ready to get to work”. I’m both telling myself - roll your sleeves up - while also turning all my lighting to 100%. If I keep my indoor shoes on and put headphones in listening to a podcast - I manage to hyper focus for a few hours or the day. It’s finding the motivation to start is the problem.

    • @christineashby4003
      @christineashby4003 10 месяцев назад +2

      YES, making labels RIGHT away made a big difference for me!!
      I used to hate the idea of decanting (who has time for that?!) but now, I do little things like taking the cereal bag out of the box and putting it in our “cereal” basket (with a clip once open) - fits much better in the space (we don’t have any cupboards that are tall enough for the boxes), and then I can easily see at a glance how much of each & what kinds we have when I’m planning for grocery shopping. The first time I did this, NONE of us could remember to put it away so it would live on the counter, but since I added a label, we all pretty consistently do it :)
      It also seems to help to keep a few extra clips in that same basket :)

    I love how honest you are about not being perfectly clean. I hate how messy my place gets, but this makes me feel less alone. Visual clutter makes me anxious so I have clear bins on shelves in a closet. I can close the door and it hides the organized clutter but doesn’t hide it enough that I forget about it. Also, I like biggish bins with categorized stuff. If it takes a few seconds to put away it might get put away. And if I know something is in a bin I know what pile of stuff to look in. Another one is I don’t really rinse my dishes. If they don’t get clean they go through the wash twice. I don’t fold my clothes and have 1000 chargers.

    I also designate general sections for things rather than specific places.

    I also made a cute looking reminder with Canva, laminated and taped it to the back of my front door. It lives there permanently so I made it look nice. It reads as follows:
    KITTENS (I close the bathroom door when I leave with items like chemicals that they don't need to be into and sometimes they like to sneak by me unnoticed while closing the doors so I count them all before I leave to make sure they're not locked in)
    PHONE
    WALLET
    WATER BOTTLE
    PURSE
    KEYS
    WORK BADGE
    MEDS
    HEADPHONESE
    SNACKS
    APPLE WATCH
    I read these all OUT LOUD before I leave my house for any reason. If I know the night before I need to remember to bring something extra with me I right it on a post it and stick it to the back of the door next to the sheet.

Warm glow is 1000x more agreeable for me. Also, just like HH, I never, never use the overhead ceiling lights, because gross. It's like why am I in a bad mood? Oh wait, there's this harsh interrogation bulb hanging over me, bumming me out, effin up the vibe in here. Gonna fix this right tf now. 📴😌

      I’m very sensitive to basically everything. I have Christmas lights in every room and most of them are also plugged into dimmer outlet things to adjust the brightness. Then I have them plugged into remote control outlets. When I get ready for bed I turn everything dim or else I can’t sleep. I use red Christmas lights in my room and bathroom and a set in the kitchen so if I need to get up the only lights I need to turn on are the red ones. I also wear orange safety glasses that go over my regular glasses. The dimmer switch outlets I got were amazing and all my lamps are plugged into them too. I know everyone else will have these things connected to wifi or something fancy but I like to turn internet off. Okay. Hope that helps someone.

I have help too but sometimes I feel bad about needing the help, as others my age don't and I "should" be able to handle these things on my own. Even with the help I'm barely keeping things together and I still feel guilty. Sound in several rooms is a great idea, I do use it to manage anxiety, I have a little bluetooth speaker my sister and her husband gave me and it does help but I don't have it on nearly enough really.

      I was given home care by the city I live in since I have ADHD, bipolar and other mental disorders making me unable to function. They cleaned my house so I could use me energy on more important things, like showering and making myself food, but I had to pay so much that I couldn't afford it. Still I live in Sweden where this kind of care is supposed to be free if you fulfill the criteria of needing help which I did.
      But I hired a private company to clean for me instead because it was cheaper. She comes every other week and vacuums, dusts, do wet cleaning of the floor, the bathroom etc. It's SO helpful!!
      Don't be ashamed of needing help, many of us do. We have limited energy and capacity, just like someone with a physical illness, so of course we need help. I can't even work, so despite being "home all day doing nothing" I still can't clean my own house. ADHD is called neuropsychiatric disability for a reason, and if you have more than one disorder like I do it becomes so much more challenging.
      You're not weak for accepting help. You're smart to save your energy to more important things in your life.

    This video popped up on my feed. ADHD is no joke, and unfortunately, so many people are uneducated about it and don’t take it seriously. My 7yo daughter got diagnosed earlier this year and her dad got diagnosed with ADD after we got her diagnosis. Things have been extremely hard for me over the years bc of their ways. I thought ADHD just meant someone was hyper and had no idea what ADD was. I thought they were just messy and lazy, didn’t care about much and so many other things. Since their diagnoses I’ve learned so much and now know that’s not the case. Some things are still hard for me to understand bc the ADHD and ADD brains work so differently, but I try my best and ask God to help me to be kind, patient and understand them more. I try to take in as much information as I can with the time I have and videos like this bring more perspective and new things to try. Thank you 🩵

    Intentionally messy-This! I COMPLETELY understand this-out of sight, out of mind for me. I have to do the same thing at work; can’t use a stand up file for ongoing projects-have to have separate small piles for ongoing projects or I’ll forget.
    For me, I’ve had to make peace that I need to have less things because I can only mangage a certain amount of ‘stuff’. It’s an ongoing battle as energy/motivation fluctuates!

    Sorry for the long post, you know how it is when you get rambling on an idea 😂
    TOTALLY understand the cleaning supplies & broom always out right by where you need them, the deodorant on the counter, the dim lighting in every room, the whiteboard for anything super important, and all stuff for going outside right by the door!! I’ve been doing those things naturally for the past year… but I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one, because it has been a challenge sometimes to get my spouse on board! (He’s the only non-ADHDer in our house, yet things that work for the rest of us often make no sense to him - like when I took off ALL our cupboard doors).
    For the laundry on the floor, I put a laundry basket right wherever clothes naturally seem to end up (I often keep one in the living room for just this purpose - which doubles for all the random blankets there too). At least it’s off the floor! I also keep a garbage can in almost EVERY room f the house (not in my living room anymore since the kitchen one is right between the two rooms, but when I did most people thought I was soooo weird!)
    Absolutely love the scent idea in every room, and the look of the plants everywhere, I’ll have to try those :)

    Your space honestly already looks amazing and I love everything you said. Having said that, I'm actually looking to do some free organization projects for local neurodivergent influencers as I'd love to spread the word more about the things we can do and ways we can think out of the box about our spaces and how to make them work for us and how to totally ditch the idea that we need to do what is socially "normal" or designed for neurotypical brains... and I'd love to connect if you're interested. No strings attached other than if we did do a project together, I'd love to be able to post some of it (open to your edits and review first. Nothing without consent) and I'd love to be tagged in anything you post about the project. :)
    If you're interested. If not, I totally get it. (Btw, I have ADHD, my boys both have ADHD, and one has autism, and I live in Langley, so not too far) :)

    I use a variation on group by use instead of type and bag/box everything that I have to have consistant access too. I have mobility issues so I have to group into small enough containers I can move without help, having it in a container lets me move it to the less painful seating areas of the house to use and doesn't make me juggle stuff, and having it together already when I settle down to use the items keeps me from burning spoons getting up and down going back to drawers for items I forgot to grab the first few times. Anything that has to leave the house with me is in those redbubble zipper bags (seeing the item doesn't help me, but for some reason a randomly associated image does). For example all my "get ready" stuff is in one that also goes in my day bag in case I realize as I pull up to an appointment that I forgot a step. "Project" based stuff goes in thrifted small suitcases and asthetic boxes so that it looks nice while still having them visible. This one actually really helped with taking better care of my hair, because its really long and a pain to take care of right after washing. One of the boxes that lives on the bottom of my coffee table has my hair dryer, straightener, the combs and brushes for when its wet, a shoulder towel, and a fold away mirror. I'm way more likely to actually do something to control my hair resting on the couch with the stuff already there and ready to go than trying to stand in the bathroom or haul all those items to the living room.

    Feeling overwhelmed is no fun. I applaud you for doing whatever you need to do to turn down the volume on the overwhelm. Hacks of my own: I fill two large glass containers with water in the morning and put them on one end of my desk. That way I don't become dehydrated during the day when I'm focused on work. I keep a giant, untippable water bowl topped up for my dogs each morning for the same reason -- I would feel terrible if they couldn't stay hydrated and comfortable when I have my attention focused on some crisis or the other at work. I pre-load a weekly pill minder with all my vitamins and medications in order to both avoid skipping something I need and to also avoid double-dosing. Five minutes of filling that big pill minder keeps me on track for the entire week. Out of sight = out of mind is a big problem when I'm feeling overwhelmed. Keeping things where I can see them (e.g. my insulin pens, five pen tips out in the a.m. for each day, one good black pen in a specific spot where I can reliably grab for it when needed, etc.) means that I am not anxiously rooting around for things all day. Need to write a check? Boom, good black pen is in my hand almost before I can even think of it. Time for lunch? Boom, insulin pen and pen tip in my hands without having to open anything or dig through anything. My keys live in my right pants pocket 100% of the time. My dog's leashes are on a specifically placed set of hooks right next to the door. All of the things you mentioned are very helpful and will be useful for EVERYONE as we age, even if staying organized is easy when we're young.

    Get a cabinet towel holder for the dog towel, or get or sew some twill tape to the towel so you can hang the paw rags nearby. Use more 3m command hooks to left of the door to free up counter space. Get a tall (rectangular garbage bin (lined with a permanent bag that never leaves) that sits beside your reg bin. This is your recycling bin. Get Phillip hue bulbs or if too costly for smart bulbs, or replace your lighting with 3000 kelvin bulbs (except for bath and kitchen, that's why hue is great so you can change on the fly with their system). 3m command cable hooks to keep cables, cords and wires away from surfaces and unseen. Wash your mosquito netting cause that is a dust magnet (and allergy irritant). Clean your hairbrush every time you use it (you just need to remove the dead hair with your hands and deep clean it when you need to with shampoo) Your hair will forever be greasy by reintroducing the old sebum after you wash by using that brush uncleaned. Tonnes of brush cleaning tutorials on youtube. Do your laundry when the main basket is full or get a second basket. Regular piles on the floor are how adhd piles get out of hand.

    YES to all of this!!!
    Best thing ever that has worked for me is to just put he thing where I use it, not where normal people are supposed to be putting it. Sure, vacuum does live in a closet with me because the hairs on the floor will remind me to use it... But other than that, keys literally on the door knob, spray cleaning in every spot I need to clean (kitchen, toilet, bathroom) more frequently even if that means I have double things in all the spots. It just works better that way.
    Sometimes, when i've put stuff away "in a designated put away spot" to make it seem less messy for my love who lives with me, I can literally forget about shit and lose my shit over not being able to find something. Then to actually find out I had a stroke of stupidity and started to declutter and make me actually lose my actual shit.

    One I just recently started-
    I hate putting away laundry. I will fully just let baskets of clean laundry live in the middle of the floor and use things out of there, which takes more time, is wrinkly, an annoys me to have to walk around. But I still couldn't get myself to always put it away.
    I started just laying my work shirts flat on each other, and there's a special shelf for it in my bathroom. I don't get ready in my room, I get ready in my bathroom, so I just get my clothes straight from there (on work days).
    My pants I just fold in half and half again, and stack them like that. It's been really great, honestly. I manage to hang up my non-work clothes/jackets because theres so much less to hang up overall.

    I love that you put your diffuser next to your coffee maker to remind yourself, but if you got some smart plugs you could set them up on a schedule, and/or tell Alexa to turn it on/off. (Almost) everything in my house is automated now. Lamps, alarms, Christmas tree, robot vacuum… I just bought some Kasa plugs on Amazon and they are cheaper than Amazon’s plugs, and pair with Alexa.
    Pro tip: get smart devices with "Matter" so that in the future it will work with any system (Amazon, Google, etc.)

    your house is just like my apartment. I'm shook :D all the indirect, versatile light options, all the speakers, all the "random" stuff, and my no 1 prio: everything's just so cozy, I instantly feel comfortable. It's absolutely crazy for me to see someone else developing the same weird strategies as I do for my daily living. With the same ways to trick their brain :D love!

    Thank you for starting this video with "these are things that help me, I hope they can help you too, they may not work for you". If I had a nickel for every "jobs for neurodivergent people" video or article that was just "this is the only thing I found that works for me", one suggestion that was just their job, that usually didn't even work for me anyways, I wouldn't need any of these hacks to be able to be productive to make enough to pay my bills 😂

      I have laminated calendars and posters in my house that I turn around and stick backwards into the inside of my cabinet doors in a kitchen. That I can use a whiteboard marker to do like the top three most important things MIT of the day. Spray wipe and repeat. Takes up less space.

    in case ppl don’t know it’s not good to put your keys near the outside wall of your house, your car can get stolen that way (not by breaking in, by hijacking the radio signal). it’s best to put them near the center of the house and/or upstairs, even though it’s not as convenient.

    A SCENT FOR EVERY ROOM omg I need to do tjis

    I put all my makeup etc in a basket with three dividers and go back and forth with it between my vanity and my bathroom as I feel like. It’s a 110 year old building and sometimes the room with the vanity is blazing hot, or my brain is just too unsettled to sit down in the morning. So the portable makeup basket helps a lot!
    Let’s see, what else… I bought ottomans for my living room and entryway so I could store things that I don’t want out every day but KNOW that I would immediately feel defeated going to look for.
    I keep bathroom cleaning materials between the toilet and the wall because no one looks there anyway; and I can just look down at it and say, “hey, I should use this Iron Out real quick” (see: 100-year-old building) or “I can dump some toilet cleaner in while I do my skin care”.
    I deliberately leave certain cooking tools and items out on the counter so that I will feel more motivated to start cooking (for some reason the get-things-out part psychs me out?? idk) - I plan to get a cute basket to put it all in.
    My fish care is in my kitchen so that while I’m waiting for the water to boil, I will see it and quickly do that.
    It’s like a weird treasure hunt, the “next stage” of chores is often with the chore before it.
