Just found your videos and it was good to discover one of the dying breed of us still running a 4WD petrol model. Mine is a 2004 3.0V6 AWD Estate. You don't see many of those! Anyway, wanted to replace rear spring as ride height has sunk and I'm suffering tyre scrub on the inside edges with all other tracking adjustments at the limit. Had no trouble with the lower arm bolts or the drop link nut. Great tip to use an Allen key to hold the spindle. Haynes omits to mention this key bit of information and also sends you down the line of using spring compressors which as you have demonstrated is not necessary. Your video was a great help - thanks. I wouldn't have managed it without.

One you have jacked the car up there is no tension on the rear spring. You can take it off just by tapping it with a hammer to loosen it once it has dropped.
It's so great to see a new x-type repair video! I also went for an electric car (Hyundai Ioniq EV), but I'm keeping and trying to keep repairing my 2007 2.2D X-Type and have it as a weekend car until, hopefully, one day when the prices drop, convert it to electric (losing half of the mechanical troubles while keeping that fabulous luxury interior)... After 10 or more years I figure the suspension is shot, so I replaced the shocks and springs, front and back, on my X-Type. Btw the front shock mounts disintegrated when I removed them. And the control arm bushings were all shot as well, so those had to be replaced as well. I'm in the US, California, so the weather conditions are not as bad as yours. Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful.
I sometimes wonder whether in hot, dry climates if the rubber/plastic components suffer as much as if they are in the moist air of the UK. Here the great car killer is road salt put down in the winter.
You might be right about the dry heat being harder than the cold whether on rubber and plastic. But wouldn't the time alone be enough to decompose these materials? Not my area of expertise.
@@janetoss They must have a safe life but most of the rubber bits are still on my car. The bushes tend to fail but sleeves and bump stops etc seem to last.
Hi, great vid. You're pretty brave attempting a job like that. Both my back tyres are wearing badly like yours on the inside, it's like the camber is way off, but I know that it can't be adjusted. But can one spring going affect both tyres?? anyway I'm going to check both rear springs. It's a 07 x type estate 2.2d I bought 2 springs 5 years ago from Ebay and paid my local garage in coppull, chorley, to install them, They only fitted the broken one and kept the other. €unt$. So maybe the other one has now gone. Thanks
It could be the spring but it could also be you've taken a hit off a pot hole. I have another video about just resetting all the bolts that might be worth a look.
when you had the spring of what is holding the bump stop in place . when i was in the tyre centre yesterday i could see my passenger side one was broken away from were it mounts two
@@johnnysevengun i guess ill have to make sum sort of cutom bracket its rusted through so will need to drill a hole in the top of the mounts fit a bracket inside the rubber with 2 holes for the small bar to fit through the top as long as it sits firmly in place lol bloody jags lol cost me over 4k so far in repaires replacing all worn out parts but ill never get rid of it

The bumps stops are hollow so I guess there is a bolt through the middle.

Need I say these cars have a garbage suspension OEM.
Not the best design but it has lasted at least 15 years before it started to play up.

Do you know how to change out the bump stops?
They are held on with nuts and studs. Take the spring off and undo the nuts. They will probably be rotted and want to turn without undoing.
did it sort your tyre ware as my x type camber is not great and it was wareing the inside of my back tyres too
This did cure it. But I had also changed the rear shocks and the drop links as well. The bushes in the shocks were completely shot.
I bet that broken spring was causing a lot of weird noises as well. Great work!

There was no need to jack the car up further just pull the bumper off
Do you mean the suspension bump stop? It is bolted on into rusty metal.
