  • So you are starting out in the world of hunting and dear stalking.
    What is the best knife?
Buy a Mora Knife you won't go wrong. I look at some options as well as some other kit, like a small saw and sharpening equipment.
Custom knives are great but learn to use those tools first before buying a work of art.

Solid recommendation for the money. Another great choice is a Victorinox Skinning or Boning knife. My favorite knife is a Bark River - Fox River Ext-2

Been there 30 years ago... Purchase the rifle that you can shoot the best, get the best glass you can afford and buy the best knife you can... Cause, the glass you' re gonna use it 90% of the time. The rifle, you're gonna use it for seconds and the knife, at least for and hour, if you're sucessful. And... Stay away from scandi grinds! They suck in the hunting chores... Go Buck, they offer and excelent line of hunting knives, from 20 to 300€, plenty to choose from. Thanks for sharing!

I agree scandi grind is awful for skinning etc...

Sorry mate, but that Mora is a really bad choice for hunting, especially if you're going to be dressing game, and slicing up meat!
The scandi blade is made for carving wood, and has a steep angle with prominent shoulders, making it particularly unsuitable for butchering meat.
A far better knife for that purpose is the Cold Steel Master Hunter, or even one of the ESEE knives. They have grinds that are specifically designed for slicing and food prep, especially meat. Even a smaller commercial butcher's knife would do the job far better.
As for losing the knife, I don't think someone who can't even look after his/her knife should even be considering going out hunting! Imagine what he/she would be doing with his/her weapon!
