  • Dear friends
Even though my title says Gopeng best foodie haunts, but you’ll notice for this episode Gopeng only made up 30% of the feature, the rest are however confined to Pengkalan, a small location in Ipoh. This is already my 4th feature of Ipoh, although it will not be my last feature of Ipoh, that’s cos Ipoh has lots of food to offer. Hope you’ll find this episode compelling, meanwhile please go out and support the local street food, be it in Pengakalan or otherwise. Thanks, and see you in the next.

A very pleasant and "NEW" episode featuring Gopeng and it's vicinity. One of the highlights ( at least for me ) is the Lai Fun with all the "liew" side stuffing that goes with it. I noticed the original way where a slight dash of sesame seed is put on top of the Lai Fun and that really stamps an original way how Lai Fun is to be served. Of course the seafood restaurant with the big head fresh water prawns dish will surely make someone's day when it is beautifully steamed to perfection. Proud to see that the mobile van bread / pastry husband and wife ( hardworking younger couple) seller putting up nice and unique pastries for sale. Over at the GP foodcourt - the "pau" seller with special "Fuzhou bun " looks good and great that they learn the old recipe from their in laws. Great Gopeng episode ....Yat Lau !!! Mou Tat Deng !!!!👌👌👌

Princess Hang Li Poh could be just a fictitious figure, and the same goes for Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir, Hang Kasturi and Hang Lekiu alike as narrated by same historians.
Gopeng is a place carries a lot of weight with me, simply because my beloved late mother was from there. I still clearly remember whenever we paid my late 'popo' (maternal grandmother) a visit in New Kopisan (a small new Chinese village under Gopeng), the poached salted free range chicken she cooked for us is something that I can never forget in my life, so as her new year rice cake (年糕)and Hakka mugwood pastry (客家艾粄)! So much good to reminisce about, but both my 'popo' and my beloved mom are all gone now...
"Lai Fun" is possibly one of the most famous noodle dishes in Gopeng and surrounding areas, but in my point of view, it's not as delicious as those days, simply because it's a bit too starchy now, may be for the reason of cutting cost.
Let's not forget cendol Samy which his cendol cart is located in front of Hohochak restaurant (好好味海鲜饭店) in Lawan Kuda! If you never met Samy in person, you might think that he is a Chinese, due to his fluency in Hakka and Cantonese. Cendol that he serves is the best I ever had, no joke! Is a must try, should you visit Gopeng again, but beware it opens only in noon roughly at 2 or 3, and it's not daily.

Another great history lesson. It always has some political intonation. Malaysian Chinese is more Chinese than China Chinese, that sound so true. There are some extremist political bigots trying to destroy this heritage by assimilation. Chinese is very much into commerce, because it involves calculation. It is a fact that some bigots trying to erase the history that economy in Malaysia was built by Chinese leading the way. The most recent viral is about who built Kuala Lumpur. If you are poor in maths, you can never be successful financially. Rent seeking is new financial literacy in Malaysia. It is home tutored, you can obtain a Degree, Master and even a PhD on it. Malaysia Boleh!
Hence, we need good food recommendation from Elmo to calm down our nerves and forget about politicking for awhile.
