Hey boys and girls, aunties & uncles!
Gopeng and Kampar was the tin exporter of the world making many immigrant fabulously rich.
In 1979, Malaysia produced almost 63,000 tons of tin, accounting for 31% of world's output. Tin deposit spreads across western Peninsular Malaysia, particularly the Kinta Valley in Perak. In 1883, Malaysia was the largest tin producer in the world. In 1885, 12.8 km of railway was constructed connecting Taiping to Port Weld in Perak. The first trunk road in Peninsular Malaysia was constructed passing through major mining towns in Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan in which it was mostly used to transport tin from mines to ports. In the 1920s, dredging machines were introduced to boost the production of tin. Starting from the 1980s, tin mining in Malaysia experienced sharp decline due to competition from Brazil and the falling of tin price. In 1989, the Malaysian Tin Products Manufacturers' Association was established to promote and protect the downstream business of tin industry in the country.
Most locals would introduce you to a rice noodles dish called Lai Fun, but you can easily find many other authentic food in the area. If this district in Perak is on your list, here are 16 delicious places to go for authentic local food.

many famous people in showbiz are from gopeng and kampar.
adibah noor (late), KRU, raihan (nasyid group), sheila rusly and azman yahaya (director couple of malay dramas), lat and mamat khalid (famous brothers a cartoonist and a filmmaker), low ngai yuen (theatre producer and tv host), linda hashim (actress), shahir zawawi (singer, nephew of adibah).
both kampar and gopeng are ruled by the mayor of kampar.
my father's family is from kampar.

The claypot chicken rice you had don't have char siu in it, it is lap cheong & the 'white chicken' claypot rice you mentioned is basically steamed marinated chicken rice, called 蒸鸡 (steamed chicken, jing gai in cantonese. This is how locals calls it). The shop you patronized is Chan Siew Heng & NOT Chan Siew.
