I just wanted to be the first to say it if she doesn't realize it while watching. The body double effect for the episode was accomplished by actually using Nicholas twin brother. He had done work on the show before as a body double for his brother but this was the most you get to see him directly.

While not stated, it occurs to me that Anya probably took longer to believe "weak" Xander as real because she already sees that more confident aspect inside of him. And he in turn probably does feel and act more confident with her in private.

If you think back to all the times Riley has told Buffy he loves her at this point, she's never said it back. I think the closest she has come is "tell me about it" when Riley says he loves her so much he can't think straight after he and Angel fought.
(And she told Angel she has someone in her life that she loves when she was talking about Riley and trying to hurt Angel)

    • @colej.banning2419

I don't think we're supposed to take away that Buffy has never told Riley that she loves him. The fact that we never see it happen on screen is significant, but it's more of a convention IMHO to convey their emotional distance than something to take totally literally.

    • @ceceliam9014

@@colej.banning2419 It does. With him saying "I love you" and her never saying it back and him often noticing her not saying it back.
I see your point that the show never directly acknowledged that Buffy wasn't saying it. But they did show us her repeatedly not saying it, and what did come up directly in the dialogue was that she was treating Riley like a rebound she didn't fully love up until the day he left.
It could be an implication of distance if you choose to interpret it that way. But I mostly take it literally, and it makes more sense to me, personally, that they'd show us her saying it if she'd said it.

Love that you get Xander! 🥰 It can be very frustrating when fans ignore the background of this character. Also great after this episode as i think it does give you a different perspective on his interactions and choices. I think it's interesting how Willow believes the Xander that she gets (messy Xander) straight away which is the quirky, funny and self-doubting Xander because, after all, she has known him since they were kids. And Buffy gets strong, confident,l and capable Xander, doesn't question it and believes him because the Slayer and leader side of her sees the strength in him and all those good qualities. I also like those little looks from Willow; she always gives those little assurances to Giles, after all she did have a crush on him. 😊

This was a great episode. It gave us more insight into Xander's life and what he thinks of himself and how he thinks others perceive him. It's sad really and it always gets me choked up inside. Poor Xander. We've known since high school when Cordelia blurted out how his parents drink, indicating that his homelife isn't that great. We even saw him sleeping outside in a sleeping bag in the episode where the First Evil wanted to kill Angel and it snowed for the first time. And we got that quick glimpse of his father in the Season 4 finale during the nightmare in which we saw his father yelling at him and just really coming down hard on him. Which to me says alot as to why him and Willow are so close and had sleepovers growing up. He probably took refuge in her quiet home. We've seen him struggle financially after high school since he didn't apply to go to college. His parents made him pay rent and move to the basement right after he got home from his short-lived road trip. We know he's a hard worker. And this construction site was a blessing. Here, his boss tells him he's great at his job and therefore offers him a better one with better pay. Which is an upgrade and he can finally be able to pay for his new place.
But then to hear him say, "But I never help. I get in trouble and Buffy saves me... Take my life, please... It's not like I was doing anything so great with it." Just breaks my heart every time. He doubts himself and his self worth. But I also have to assume that he doesn't get praised at home at all and it sure doesn't help when he's been bullied at school and people look down upon him most of the time. That can affect the way a person thinks about themselves. Because they hear it all the time, they then start to believe they are worthless.
Xander has proven himself too many times that he is capable of accomplishing things and is someone you can rely on. This episode showed that and I hardly hear people bring it up. He LITERALLY risked his life to protect Buffy. You could say he was willing and able to take a bullet for her. And let us not forget how he saved Buffy from drowning which would have ended her life and how he saved everyone from not being blown up in high school during the apocalypse in the Zeppo episode. He has more than enough proven his worth many times over. It is why he is the heart of the group. And I hate how a lot of people hate on Xander and easily forget what he has done for the love of his friends. No one is perfect and he's had his share of bad moments but through it all, he has been there for his loved ones.

Riley's problem is he's Angel from season 3, except Buffy grew out of the 'I can't live without my man' stage a while ago. Riley has no life or role outside of being Buffy's boyfriend. So he puts all of his energy into that. Buffy has a million things going on and doesn't have time to reciprocate that kind of time and energy into their relationship. That's naturally going to make Riley feel unwanted and frustrate him that he is more 'into' their relationship than she is.

This time it's almost a complete replica. Nicholas Brendons's actual twin brother stars here, which makes it even more compelling. An interesting view into potential other side of a someone's personality. The mundane flat hunting handled well that many can relate to. Another good S5 episode, not great but OK. There is so much better to come. Don't worry Dakara just be patient with the Dawn mystery, it will all make sense soon.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘The Replacement’. May contain spoilers.
If there's one thing Willow and Xander have in common and share in in low vibratory moments... It's that loser mentality and thinking of being useless or valueless to the people around them. And while Willow has found her stride in not being that anymore, Xander hasn't and never really does. Like I said... Every main character in this show has insecurities, worries, fears and all number of issues and problems... But Willow's are hidden behind a costume while the other characters wear them on their sleeve. And that's what makes her insecurities so interesting to talk about. The persona she wears to cover them up and the fact that she is so afraid someone is just gonna come along and strip her bare so that all they'll ever see is the loser, the "spaz", the geek. Which isn't her anymore no matter what she believes or how she thinks of herself.
So when Xander confesses what he does to Willow in this scene about how "demon Xander" is taking his life and maybe that he should just let him because, according to him, he is living it better than he ever did... Willow more than understands how he feels. And the clever mention to Vampire Willow really just puts this point into perspective I say... Because Willow did used to feel like that too until her evil doppelganger showed her that she could definetly have it a lot worse off than being an "old reliable" best friend to Buffy and Xander and that she should really count her blessings because there was never anything wrong with it in the first place. And since Vampire Willow is subtly brought up in this scene... It does make me wonder who sired who. I'm sure there's some fanfiction out there for that - I should go mooching for it.
Off topic - I did notice that there is no longer 2 single beds in Willow's dorm room but one queen-sized bed instead. I'm sure that's convenient and comfy now she's got the room to herself. 😏

His dating history alone is enough to make every guy in Sunnydale want to trade places with him. Ampata was a mummy but as a human she was beautiful, the hottest girl in school gave up her friends and popularity for him, he had a thing with Willow who, despite her reputation, was always a cutie, he lost his virginity to another beautiful girl who also just happens to be a vampire slayer, and a beautiful 1,000 year old ex-demon can’t get enough of him. Not to mention he’s been in apocalyptic battles and helped saved the world multiple times. And most of that was before he even finished high school!! OK, blah, blah, we know. But here's something few people comment about or realize. When Xander's two parts say in unison, "Kill us both, Spock!", it's a reference to the Original Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within" where Kirk is split into 2 separate Kirk's, one who is weak, thoughtful, and compassionate, the other who is harsh and over-confident, and somewhat evil. It's Spock who discovers the truth and takes the order from the more composed Kirk that if reuniting the 2 parts is unsuccessful, then Spock should "kill us both". Spock also analyzes that both these sets of qualities are required for a successful leader. Whedon took inspiration from the fact that Brendon has an identical twin, and from that Star Trek episode.
