At the end of the episode before they get in the car Sam tells Dean that the police's new theory is that "Dean Winchester" was the culprit despite the other crimes being caught on camera. They apparently now came to the conclusion that "Dean" did the crimes and the other people are innocent; they're cases will be reviewed and they'll hopefully be set free. Since the shapeshifter was in Dean's form when it was killed; the real Dean has now officially been declared dead legally which is something that will continue storyline wise. I will say though don't think about this stuff because it's not relevant to the series. I said the same thing to another reactor who had the same kind of thoughts or questions after viewing the pilot; Sam and Dean's job is just to kill the monster not to deal with the aftermath or repercussions of the town or the people in it. However in this case your inquiry was fair because as I said at the start of my post there were huge consequences like Dean officially being declared dead but for the most part it's not a thing that's important.
Hi, thank you for your comment, we like it when people explain things in detail, helps us understand the characters and series more and gives us things to think about, thank you :-)
