  • Phantoms is my favorite track from Meshuggah´s new record "Immutable".
The Polyrhythms are crazy in this - actually the code I wrote down for the first part of the song (until 2:20) reads like this:
    434, 333, 433, 443, 433, 343, 344, 343, 334, 334, 434, 333, 333, 433, 343, 344, 343, 334, 334
-- The numbers are groups of 16th notes that are played against a 4/4 Half Time Groove --
Still this track has a very nice flow! And the instrumental ending always gives me the chills - it's perfect.
Cheers and ask questions if you have some!
I want to thank Martin Schnella for doing such a great job with the mix again.

    In this recording I use:
    Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch
    Tama Starphonic Copper Snare
Meinl Byzance and Classics Custom Cymbals
    Meinl Standard 5B Sticks
Aquarian Resonator Heads on Toms and a Hi-Energy Head on the Snare

Literally their hardest and most unpredictable, random drum line I’ve heard out of their discography and you nailed it. What an incredible performance, man.

Thanks man! Yeah, I decided to learn this track before I even had an idea of how hard this actually is.. it took me quiet some time to get down all the parts. But it’s a blast to play this stuff 🤟🏻

@@boarderking133 yeah, every song by Meshuggah has a pattern of course. Here it’s really the length that makes it so hard to get down.. one repeat takes around 30 seconds

I would argue that The Abysmal Eye is the "Clockworks" of Immutable... I've listened to many live recordings from their performance of that particular track and Haake struggles a lot with the basedrum pattern on that one.

@@SimonSchroederDrums For the first half, even though the back beat is there, it still feels absolutely foreign in the context of the song and riff. Each time I try to wrap my head around it and count, Tomas adds some tricky accent, fill or ghost note here and there, which immediately throws me off guard.
I'm not a drummer myself, but I can definitely appreciate and acknowledge the immense amount of work you've put in your drumming. The limb change in the second half is something to behold. Absolutely impressive.

Thanks! This took a lot of time.. I guess counting it right was the part that took most of the time for this cover :)

It took me several hours of practice and repetition just to be able to play the main riff pattern, on the bass with a pick. Due to how seemingly random it feels. Can’t imagine how difficult this is on drums. Respect

Thanks man! It was pretty hard to learn for sure.. This might be the hardest song I ever covered on this channel. Cheers 🤟🏻

Dude, you’re playing on a master level and yet you look so young. Keep at this and in 15 years you’ll be a god, as if you’re not already there. You nailed the time signature. The only other person I know that could do this is Thomas haake himself, and Travis orbin maybe. Lol

Even once you figure out the pattern for this song it's still super difficult to play properly on a kit - very good cover.
