    Federer's backhand in 2017 was terrifying. Normally, Nadal has beaten Federeri with his backhand many times throughout his career, but in 2017, I was closing my eyes when Roger hit the backhand while watching the games.

      So why did he lose 4 times in a row from 13-14 on hard, only winning 1 single set?
      And since then hes won the 7 times theyve played on hard and grass.
      From 08- early 14, Nadal was 8-3 against Fed on hard and grass.
      4-0 in grass and HC slams.

    When you see the way Fed improved against Nadal, you must wonder how did he lose all those fast court matches against this guy. Ok, the clay i can understand, but Fed lost at least 10 matches against Nadal due to nerves and his technical problems on the backhand. Against Djokovic, its simply Djokovic matching Fed in and going toe to toe with him. At least thats the case when both of them were at their best, both had the weapons to battle each other. Against Nadal, its just Nadal doing thr same thing over and over again, jaming that weak backhand of Fed. But after Fed learned to take it early and flatten it out, the whole dynamic of the rivalry changed. So "bad" matchup against Nadal, actually became a very favorable one the last few times they played outside of clay for Fed. How things can change.

    Nadal should be extremely grateful that Roger was too stubborn to move to a bigger racket earlier in his career. Roger was 6-1 (plus a w/0) against Nadal after the racket change. And if it hadn't been so windy at RG in 2019 who knows what would have happened in that match if Roger had been able to play as aggressively as he had in their previously 5 meetings.

    • @Ultimate.Tennis
      @Ultimate.Tennis Год назад +4

      It wasn't the racket that made the difference in 2017. It was the backhand.
      Also, suggesting that roger could have beaten in form Nadal at RG if it was less windy is like saying Nadal would have beaten federer at wimbledon if wimbledon was played on clay. Wind is an inevitable factor on out door courts. Nadal thrives on out door courts and clay. Federer throughout his career did better on in door courts bc the lack of wind accentuates his potent serve. If you blame Fed's loss against nadal on the wind at RG, you might as well just change the tournament and say that every tournament should be played in conditions favorable to federer.

Nobody else in history can hit so clean, accurate and powerful shots. Nobody has the skillset of Federer. Nadal and Djokovic are simply warriors, nothing more. They don't give up on the point until the opponent misses it. It's a nice mentality for a player to have, but not skill. Federer wins the point straight forward without giving his opponent the slightest chance to respond.

    2019 FO vs Wimby shows the difference the larger racket and neo backhand made for Roger vs Rafa. At the FO, you could see due to the clay court that Roger couldn't hit through the court and overpower Nadal with either FH OR BH, so that's easy work for Rafa as it has been against Roger always at the FO. At Wimby Roger could overpower Nadal with either stroke and beat him in 4 sets.
    Prior to 2017 Nadal was gaining the upper hand against Roger on even non-clay because Roger could only overpower him with the FH. So Nadal would avoid it by going his lefty FH to Roger's BH, which would rise too much and force Roger to slice it back, allowing Nadal to extend points and eventually find the angle for winners or force Roger to make an error.
    Roger went to the larger racket and started taking the ball earlier, on the rise, and that made all the difference as you can see on this surface but also earlier in IW or Miami. Now he can overpower Nadal with either FH or BH, and that's basically game over. Not only does he beat him, he makes it look easy.

      Nobody has Federer's talent and likely will never have it again. But if you watch the Sinner-Alcaraz matches at Wimbledon or the US Open and don't see the insane talent on display then idk what to tell you. Tennis isn't over after Rafa, Novak, and Roger no matter how much I enjoy and respect the three. Players like Medvedev, Sinner, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz, Korda, Rune still show a ton of talent. You can argue their mental strength compared to champions like these and I feel like you'd have a better argument but even still players like Alcaraz have shown they have this in spades better than other generations that have come to try to test the Big Three. There's still gonna be a lot to appreciate post Big 3, lot of dynamic games and talent on display

      @@sasook I feel like that's unfair to put on Alcaraz this early in his career. He had a pretty killer season last year, very winning and consistently going deep. His first full season on tour too really. Also Rune who has also just jumped to the scene. As well as Sinner who has been pretty consistent, btw also still very young, just laced with injuries over the last season nearly always losing close matches in the fourth round or quarters to top players. To say that none of them have any consistency at this point I feel is unfair. I get your point, but I'd wait to make that kind of judgement on players like Sinner and Alcaraz, especially given how young they are rn

      @@AnthonyHirsch If you really wanna make that argument about the teenagers, fine. That still doesn't excuse the multiple players in their mid 20s right now that we've been touting as the supposed Next Gen for like 8 years now who all happen to be so pathetic that the tour continued to be dominated by 3 old men past their primes, one of whom _is still dominating to this day._ The fact that Djokovic & to a slightly lesser extent Nadal have dominated even more in the past few years than in their own primes speaks volumes about how weak the tour has been.

    Poor federer fans pretend that this wasn’t him in his prime in 2017. It’s the only year where he genuinely had an elite backhand consistently. And it wasn’t getting exploited. Would’ve been interesting to see him play djokovic this year to see if their was finally a version of federer that could beat prime djokovic

      @Al-ji4gd Год назад +1

      An older Federer beat prime Djokovic plenty of times, even in 2014, 2015 and 2019, so why would 2017 have been any different, especially since Novak was so bad that year? Fed's game might have been nearer his best ever in 2017, but the one thing you cannot ignore is age. He still suffered from injuries and had to take a lot of time off throughout the season. Took the whole clay court swing off, and was injured for most of the North American swing. So, even though your tennis might be great, you still have to think about form, health, age and confidence, and those are never going to be at their highest in your mid-to-late 30s.

Novak has a winning head to head versus both, more weeks at number one, among other things. I enjoy all three, massive Federer fan for my whole life, but I can also appreciate and accept that Novak is one of the greatest players we have ever seen and has done amazing to catch up with both of them and show a crazy dominance over the last decade
