The word can mean two things, depending on how it is used/understood in speech:
1) Be a reference to sex. Meaning an adult female, typically holding biological traits ment for bearing and nurturing offspring.
2) Be a reference to gender identity. Most commonly held by adult females and is typically associated with distinct traits of femininity.

The larger context that actually inspired Mr. Walsh's original question is proof positive that the referent is what's at issue. They aren't mixing up anything, it's intentional. Feminine is a stereotype of behaviors and traits associated with women. The idea of gender identity was a fabrication of the mid 20th century along the same time frame as sexual identities (which didn't exist before then).
Stereotypes exist for a reason. There is some truth to them. But no one person is going to live up to an entire stereotype. And there will be a sizable number that match up with little of said stereotype.

As a biologist myself, I’d like to weigh in here. I’m surprised you didn’t bring up this one little observation. Asking this, “why can’t a mother be a father?” Or vice-versa. You’re correct. Mother means a lot of things, but one thing it does NOT mean is FATHER. Father. Mother. Both are roles separated by sex. Of all the things “mother” means, we don’t confuse it with “father.” The video you showed of that girl trying to make it seem so complicated that it can’t be easily defined, but she’s wrong. Regardless of the difficulty defining it, ONE thing we know for SURE, is that a mother is NOT a father and a father is NOT a mother. Apart from the biological implication, that is, a mother provides the ova and the father provides the sperm, both of those TOGETHER BIOLOGICALLY is required for human reproduction and development. That girl does not seem to understand basic biology. So allow me to sum up BOTH, what is a woman AND what is a man.
A woman is a human female with XX sex allosomes, with associated female genitalia, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina.
A man is a human male with XY sex allosomes, consisting of external and internal genitalia, penis, urethra and scrotum. The internal aspects of male genitalia include, the seminal vesicle, testes, vas deferens, epididymis, prostate, bulbourethral gland, and ejaculatory duct.
No medical doctor, no biological research scientist, no one with a modicum of medical knowledge can and would deny these facts. One thing for sure, BECAUSE of the standard, known facts, we can state what an intersex person is because of the already WELL DEFINED knowledge of male and female.
So male and female sexes are clearly defined and I do not care any longer if my career is at jeopardy because of these FACTS. Of all the scientists and physicians and researchers I’ve worked with, this has never been a bone of contention, it’s the politically correct thing to say, but there comes a time when absolute truth has to be defended. Transgender is a social construct, biology isn’t. Gender and sex have always been linked and only the last decade has a campaign been launched against reality.
What is a woman is as easily defined as what is a man. Mother may be a complicated term, but it clearly does NOT mean father. We use terms like step-father. Step-mother, to define the difference of a biologically birthed offspring. Adopted children, as you mention, often differentiate between adopted mother and biological mother for that very reason.
Anyone that says a woman is someone who identifies as a woman is willingly ignorant of biology and reality. I’m tired of this nonsense.
To close this for now I want to point out the fact that the vast majority of this debate is UNIDIRECTIONAL. No one is demanding man be defined or what is a man, why is that? Why is this entire debate centered around only one side of the sexes? A female is someone who is born with ovaries the genetic component can be invalid due to the SRY gene malfunction, if you did not know It’s located on Y chromosome. And people born with XY chromosome do form ovaries due to the malfunction.

It doesn't really matter how the child has a relationship to the mother, the important thing here is that the "mother" needs to be FEMALE. There is nothing called a male mother, that is a father. A father has basically the same description as a mother, the difference being that a father is a MALE. You'll never hear the words 'she is my mother'. As a matter of fact the person taking on the motherly role will say 'I am like their mother', and the ones being taken care of will say 'she is like a mother to me'.
BTW they is only used in literature as an alternate pronoun to hide the identity of a character when you talk about their actions to prevent clever readers from figuring out who is the subject. Usually used to describe actions of villains/criminals or some deed that would get the one responsible in trouble.

As someone who lived in a maternity home from late 1982 till early 1983, I would love to have five minutes with that mutant to explain to her that women and girls who place their children for adoption DO NOT relinquish their parental rights because they want "nothing" to do with their children. She's erroneously equating adoption with abortion. Placing a child for adoption is NOTHING like an abortion. The mindsets between mothers who give up their children for adoption and those who abort their babies are completely different. Although I did not relinquish my child for adoption, I lived with girls and women for five months, whose ages ranged from the teens to their mid-twenties. NONE of those girls/women wanted "nothing" to do with their children. They gave up their babies for adoption so their babies could have a better life. They thought about their children endlessly.

Even if the person is the most intellectual on the planet, a complex answer doesn't make any difference whatsoever and is only stretching out something that doesn't need to be for any reason whatsoever.
The problem with the so called experts Matt talked to, is that they gave absolutely no definition at all.

caring for the children, preparing their food, laundry, making them ready for school and bring them to bed; cooking, cleaning, general upkeeping of the household. That's all stuff that's usually done by the mother, while the father earns the money, mows the lawn, washes the car and assists his wife in any possible way. That used to be common sense.

Hey Matt. If you already haven't done so, in relation to the question, 'What is a woman' Ask them do they own a pet. If they say yes, then ask them is it a boy or a girl. When they tell you what it is, ask them how do they know. 🙂
Has someone finally answered the "what is a god" question? We need scientific facts. Evidence that they exist at all. Habitats, lifecycles, where their energy source comes from, definitive evidence of what they look like, how many there are, and how they move and reproduce... every detail. Photographs would be ideal.

Btw, faith (belief in what can't be seen or empirically proven) is an accepted core value in religion. So its laughable how a certain community won't just say they're a religion. And all you have to do is open your eyes to see all these detransitioners coming out who regret their medical interventions. I'm finally watching "What Is a Woman?". The first person who says, "There is only one reality," was such a needed relief. There's so much insanity leading up to that, I was craving a dose of reason.

Matt! I am from Australia. Please for the love of god, never stop this journey for keeping humanity sane! This is absolutely unbelievable that humans are even having any discussion at all of a debate of these topics! seriously I can not get it in my head that people can be so stupid to think a man can all of a sudden become a woman, or a woman become a man. My god what the hell has this world we live in come to. It is so sad and ridiculous that we are trying to move forward and make changes for the sake of civilisation and of all the next generations upon generations to come, for the such small percent that clearly has signs of some sort of mental health issues or concerns. This problem is massive and if this does not go our way, science and so much more things will clearly have no more relevance in so many factors anymore. This has gotten so complicated for our kids. I remember when explaining the different types of families were ok. Like step parents, living with grandma, being adopted etc. But this is getting out of hand
How? There's nothing difficult to explain. It's sad that kids are understanding this issue better than adults. Some men feel like women so they want to look and be called women. Some women feel like men and they want to look and be called men. They are all still human. It's ok. It's seriously nothing new. They are still humans and should be treated as such. God, tells us to love all of the people he creates even those we find strange and understand he his reasons for making this way.
There. I just wrote out the most simple explanation that clearly explains all points clearly without confusion. Now explain to your kids so that there generation has some ounce of hope for our species.

The only scientific evidence we have on any of this situation Is that the hormone blockers could potentially actually give the female competitors an actual advantage over a trans gender competitive in sports. That is the only scientific evidence we have on this. No I agree with you sports is the only area where we do not need to make an immediate stand on making sure that they can compete until more scientific studies and evidence comes forth which they are working on. And we all know that this is the only area of argument that anyone actually has any proper leg up against trans rights. And that is the only reason why everyone against trans rights cling to this so desperately. It's not about sports It's about you having something to cling to to actually be able to argue against simply because you find all of this unnatural. And it is these ideas that need to be trampled upon so that civilization can actually move forward rather than us continuing to throw blows to take a steps back.

Which is admirable and at least some sign of potential progress. But you realize that feelings are not grounded in reality. The reality of a feeling is relative and subjective lol. You can explain anatomically what a person with a female sex organ is. You cannot explain to someone with the social construct of what a woman is supposed to be. This is not an anatomical issue That is not what anybody is arguing. It is obvious where all the confusion is coming from. It's because nobody is communicating about what the issue is. So we have anatomically males and females. We have humans with the male sexual reproductive organ and we have humans with the female sexual reproductive organ. Nobody's arguing that. There are only two sets of sexual reproductive organs. And we have labeled them so that They are socially distinguishable. When We as a species move from our little tiny caves into tribes and then expanded into cities in whole societies We created a social construct, a physical depiction of what everyone should consider what a woman is. So, at this point woman in the social construct sense, such as the typical oh they're supposed to have long hair, wear makeup, Wear dresses, etc. We created a social construct. In thus what it is to be a woman socially is not and can be different than what it means to be a person that possesses the female sex organ. This is what people are not understanding this is a social and human rights issue. This is not an anatomical issue. It is the stand up and tell society and government that they don't get to decide what gender they are labeled based on what they think a specific gender should physically look like. The level of incompetence and denseness surrounding this entire situation is mind-blowing. It is different and strange But get over yourselves and just try to be decent people. It's not hard it's really not. Just try not to be a dick. That's all that amounts to That's all it really amounts to. In the same sense that you would expect me to call you by your first name if you go by your first name rather than your middle name is not any different than someone wanting another person to call them by the pronoun that they prefer.
